After finishing the first three quests, ask Loremaster Borannin 'What is brewing?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh yes, good to see you again Maeve . I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil is one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a very important mission and has not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescue party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?'

You say, 'I will accept this mission'

Loremaster Borannin says 'The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance. Scour the regions surrounding the city of the Giants. Discover what happened to Tanik and, if possible, return him to Thurgadin. If you are successful, remember to hand me your woven shawl. We seem to be running low on them, but I must say Mordin has never had so much help in the kitchen. Anyway, I will eagerly await word of your findings. Good luck, and may Brell protect you.'

If you wander around the Eastern Wastes near NEG 6644 POS 4337 you will eventually see a message "the snow crumbles away revealing an injured coldain." This reveals Tanik Greskil.

You say, 'Hail, Tanik Greskil'

Tanik Greskil says 'Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help.'

You say, 'I will help'

Tanik Greskil says 'Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics.'

You say, 'What are velium vapors?'

Tanik Greskil says 'Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope.'

Once back in Thurgadin, find Frundle.

You say, 'Hail, Frundle Frenklar'

You say, 'What velium vapors?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret.'

You say, 'What velium vial?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet.'

You receive a Velium Purifier.

Small Pieces of Velium and Small Blocks of Velium can be looted on Ry`Gorr Miners in Crystal Caverns or off spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth.

Crystalline Silk can be found on spiders in both zones.

1) Combine a small (7 lb) brick of velium, three unstacked crystalline silks and two glass shards in a pottery wheel. You will receive an Unfired Velium Vial.

2) Combine the Unfired Velium Vial and a HQ firing sheet in the kiln and receive a Velium Vial.

3) Combine the Velium Vial and two unstacked small pieces of Velium in the Velium purifier. The Velium Purifier disappears and you are left with a Vial of Velium Vapors. The vial is a lore item and has one charge of gate to Thurgadin.

The vial is trivial at skill 122.

Do not camp the spot where Tanik Greskil is, because I did it, and got a message: You have been ambushed by frost giants! And two Kromrif Death Squad will spawn, and try to kill you.

When you get Tanik Greskil to spawn again, just hand him the vial.

Tanik Greskil says 'Thank you. I shall be eternally grateful to you. Should you ever require my assistance I pledge to you my aid. Please deliver this to Borannin, it is imperative that he deliver this to the Dain at once. Farewell for now outlander...'

You gain experience!!

Then head back to Thurgadin and hand Boradinn the note and your old shawl, for the new shawl.

Loremaster Borannin says 'Words cannot express our gratitude for your deeds outlander, you have saved a hero of our people from certain death. Please accept this, the Fur-lined shawl, as a token of our sincere appreciation. You are indeed among the most highly regarded Humans to set foot in Thurgadin. The next time we meet be sure to ask me how to further advance your reputation with the coldain.'

Since the patch today (5/8/02) It dont appear that the Nodrop/coin trick works anymore. The pet trick does still but I could not once it the Nodrop trick to work. I triggered teh DS 3 times using the pet. On the 3rd I also noticed I triggered Tannik. So I just run the DS around in a big circle and then gave him the Vial.

Someone verify if the coin trick works for them please.

You have/You stumble clarification
# Apr 26 2002 at 3:16 PM Rating: Decent
Just did Tanik, pet trick is very handy in conjunction with the no drop trick.

I spotted at least 2 kromrif death squad "traps" while searching for the "You stumble" one ;).

Apparently, Spirit of Eagle causes you to NOT set off Tanik (and probably death squad, but I am not about to find out). I had to drop SoE to get tanik to pop up.

AVOID: "You have"
FIND: "You stumble"

We just did the quest and triggered the Death Squad once with SOE, and once with Levitate, they may have made this change on 5/8/02.

This quest was pretty fun and was quick too. I started and finished this quest in about 2 hours with almost no skills in pottery. Here's how to do it:

**RAISING POTTERY SKILL**

::NOTE:: I had an INT of 214 with less than 35 skill points in pottery when I started. I would suggest that you get your INT or WIS buffed up while praticing your pottery skills. If you don't have a high INT or WIS, this may take a while for you.
-Spend about 300pp and buy Large Bowl Sketches, Large Clay Bricks, and Flasks of Water.
-Combine 2 Large Clay Bricks, Large Bowl Sketch, and Water Flask in pottery wheel to make an unfired mixing bowl. (Trivals at 128)
-Top off your pottery skill to 131 by making Large mixing bowls.

**FIND THE INGREDIENTS**

-Go to the Crystaline Caverns and fill your grocery list. (7lb Velium Brick, 2 small pieces of Velium, 3 Crystaline Silks.) You can kill the orc minors for the Velium and the spiders for the silk.
-The Glass Shards and the High Quality Firing Sheets can be purchased at the venders.

**MAKE THE VIAL OF VELIUM VAPORS**

-Combine: 7lb Velium Brick, 3 Crystaline Silk, and 2 glass shards into the pottery wheel to make an Unfired Velium Vial.
-Combine: High Quality Firing Sheet and the Unfired Velium Vial to make a Velium Vial.
-Combine: Velium Vial and 2 unstacked, small pieces of velium in the Velium Purifier given by Frundle Frenkler.

**GO SAVE TANIK**

-Go to the top of the ramp near Kael. You can either do the coin trick or the pet trick. I would prefer the pet trick. The coin trick takes WAAAY to long, but it's probably the safest method of finding Tanik.
-If you get the DS, you can either do one of the following:
1.) Feign Death and pray that they fall for it.
2.) Run down the ramp and zone into Kael.
3.) Die.

Hope this helps and good luck.

300 pp? I spen under 40 with my warrior who has int/wis under 100.

Do this until 102

1 small block clay
1 bowl sketch
1 flask water

From 102 to 122

1 block of clay
1 medium bowl sketch
1 flask of water

I then did vials until 148 (required skins for this)

1 small block of clay
1 vial sketch
1 water
1 old world skin (used zombie, some others work)

What exactly will trigger the death squad to pop? I understand that if i get a message reading "You are too far away from You stumble to trade" I can walk around and find Tanik. BUT If i get the message "You are to far away from You have to trade" will the DS pop and attack me? Im just a little bit confused about what causes the DS attack and how to avoid it.
Thurgadin Gate Potion

I did part of this quest, to get a Thurgadin gate potion:

* I spent 1 hour in Halas skilling pottery from 0 to 122. I made Medium Jars (which Triv at 36) and then Medium Bowls to get to 122.

* Went to CC, looted a couple of stacks of Crystalline Silks, some small pieces of velium and some small vellium bricks. (CC being what it is, some other stuff along the way that sells for some decent vendor pp, a crystal webshield and a Crystalline Robe).

* At Thurg Bank potting wheel I made the Unfired Velium Vial.
- 1 small brick of velium
- 3 unstacked crystalline silks
- 2 glass shards

* In Thurg Bank kiln I made the Velium Vial.
- 1 Unrefined Velium Vial
- 1 high quality firing sheet

* In Thurg go to loc (-350, +800), across from pally guild, and see the potion merchant Frundle Frenkler in the center store. When you hail her she says nothing, so Hail her and then say "What velium vial." She gives you the Velium Purifier

* Combine the ingredients in the purifier and you get a one-charge Thrugadin gate potion (Vial of Velium Vapors). I'm hoping this will port me to Thurgadin (which is a useful thing to carry if things go sour on a raid.)
- 1 Velium Vial
- 2 unstacked small pieces of velium

* On the chance that it works, I've farmed pleanty of extra material for more of these, and can simply make a replacement in Thurgadin when I actully use the potion to gate there. Considering a gate potion costs nearly 2kpp from a potion vendor, this may be a very nice alternative.

I did test the potion, worked beautifully as I materialized on the bridge inside Thurgadin. After I ported there with the potion, I made another from the spare materials I stored in the bank and carry that in my resist gear bag.

Trade trick

Not sure if anyone posted this yet but easiest way I have found to find Tanik is this. Take a no drop item and click the ground around the Kael ramp. If you get a "you are too far away from You are to trade" that is the DS trap. If you get a "You are too far away from You stumble to trade" that in Tanik's trap. Best way I have found to find him.

I have just finished this portion of the Coldain Shawl quest myself and I found that this method does indeed work. It can take some time to find the location, so one must be patient. the location I found is Neg 5693, Pos 3734. As you can see the location does vary some from each quest. Happy hunting all enjoy.

stand at the end of the ramp facing away from kael and hold out your coin and click away. i did the pet trick but got bored of that and just kept training the DS to kael until the trigger turned into tannik. trigger is random so a loc is useless. i knew where a trigger was and three DS TO KAEL'S later i got the "you stumble" message.
hailed him, went through the lil conversation dealie (im not sure but i think u can just give the item) gave him the vial and got the note. u only have to find him once.

renwick 56 druid

ps. when the DS pops u have less than a second to get moving, they see inviz, easily outrun w/ soe/sow.

A Rogue (49) and a Wizzy (45) multi-quested this today--March 4, 2002.

We did the trade thing with a copper coin, and found "YOU STUMBLE" at Neg 5722 by POS 3559 with 159.

The Rogue hailed Tanik, gave him the vial (Rogue Pottery at 173) and got the "Tanik Note", then The Rogue handled in the Note and the Wizzy handed in the Shawl. BOOM 4th down and on to the 5th.

Woot!! Velks here we come.....

Did the quest twice today in less than two hours for my partner and I. I simply charmed a snow bunny and used it to locate Tanik. Both times I was able to locate him without triggering the Deathsquad even once. The pet trick does work, but it still requires patience and caution. I did have trouble using the pet south of the Kael entrance the on the first attempt as there were a large number of walruses nearby. Fortunately, I found Tanik north of Kael. The second time I found Tanink just south of Kael, but had no trouble with the walruses as he was very near the entrance.

This quest can be MQed just like any other. Simply have a Master Potter make the potion and turn it in to Tanik. Then they return the note to Boranin and the quester turns in the 3rd shawl and receives the 4th.

From what i understand, the pet trick work but being a chanter my pet is worthless so i tried the coin trick. sat on the far side of ramp with coin in hand moving it around trying to drop it. First couple of time i cot a message, " Your to far away to trade". So figured there was something that way got to where i could trade and BAM death squad. Died twice that way (ack lvl35 hell lvl). So being the hard headed person i am and determined to get this part done i head back. (Note to self: stay away from that trade area) As i contuined to click around i got a different message, " Your to far away to stumble or trade" so i head over that way. And poof there is the coldain. So remeber this guys

"Your to far away to trade" BAD Death Squad trigger

"Your to far away to stumble or trade" Good hidden coldain

Now on to Velk to collect theads

RE: Finding the little guy
# Mar 01 2002 at 11:27 AM Rating: Default
As a chanter, you can charm a nearby snow bunny and use the pet trick to help with the coin trick. The maessages recieved are "You are too far away from You have to trade," which triggers the giants, and "You are too far away from You stumble to trade," which triggers Tanik. The triggers are regarded as NPCs, and their names are "You have" and "You stumble" because that's that first part of the emote they give when you hit them.
Where, exactly?
# Feb 20 2002 at 7:45 AM Rating: Default
Ok, I'm a 40 druid.. and deathly afraid to do this part of the quest. I am not exactly sure what everyone means when they say where this guy, or the DS spawns. Ok, when I walk to the ramp, and stand at the end and look down... where from there? On the walls of the ramp? on the floor of the ramp? Off to the sides? I tried that no-drop trading thing, and all I get are "You are too far away from a kromrif guardsman to trade." or whatever those two giants at the bottom of the ramp are. I SO do not understand the whole "pet trick". It is so confusing... this part sux. If someone could help me out.. I would REALLY appreciate it.

Oh, one more thing.. they haven't fixed any of this so you can't use it anymore, have they? I mean the coin/no-drop trick? I hope not.
RE: Where, exactly?
# Feb 20 2002 at 8:59 AM Rating: Excellent
Hey.

"I am not exactly sure what everyone means when they say where this guy, or the DS spawns."
Tannik and the Death Squad aren't real mobs, per se. (I'm confusing, rather than illuminating, right? *Grin*) They're triggered spawns. However, the trigger for these spawns are a little unlike most you'll come across. The triggers are hidden. (You can't see 'em. You can't track 'em.) They're sorta like land mines, if you like. You step on one and boom! Tannik, or a Death Squad appear.
I have read that there are six triggers. Three north of the canyon that leads to Kael and three South. I can't guarantee this for sure, but it certainly seems to fit with my own experience.

"Ok, when I walk to the ramp, and stand at the end and look down... where from there?"
Looks like you're searching in slightly the wrong place. (This is where it gets sorta tricky. I've never come across a map that has the triggers marked and I don't have the locs. Try to follow this and accept my apologies, if it's a little confusing.) Get yourself a map of the [link=www.eqatlas.com/velious/easternwastes.html]Eastern Wastes[/link]. Now inflate it, so it occupies a sheet of A4 paper, with a half inch margin on either side. (So your map should be about seven inches across.) Now, draw yourself two lines about one eigth of an inch above and below the canyon. (The Northern line should be pretty close to the -6000 East-West grid-line.)
The triggers are along these lines. (More, or less.) Three on the Northern line and three on the Southern line. The triggers aren't too close to the entrance to Kael. I'd guess the most Eastern pair are no further than 4200 North-South.
I'm sorry this is such a convoluted explanation, but it's the best I can manage. *Shrug*

"I tried that no-drop trading thing, and all I get are "You are too far away from a kromrif guardsman to trade.""
You're close to getting this right. But, you're not interested in the guardsmen. You're wanting to trade with the triggers. (Well, sorta.) When you click on a trigger, while holding a NO DROP item, you will get one of two messages.
Either:
You are too far away from You have to trade.
Or:
You are too far away from You stumble to trade.
These are parts of the messages you get, when you actually set of the trigger. The first message, (in red,) is a Death Squad trigger. The first message, (in green,) is a Tannik trigger.
Once you have found a Tannik trigger, all you have to do is wander over it and hand in your potion.

"I SO do not understand the whole "pet trick"."
I don't know how this would work for a druid. (This works with a necromancer pet, but I don't know if it is the same with anyone else's pets.) If I tell my pet "/pet guard here", he will turn to face the closest monster. The pet regards the triggers in the same manner as he would a monster. (As in, he'll face a trigger, if there is no monster closer than the trigger.) This can be used, to help you locate the triggers.
A necromancer can bind their vision to ther pet, which is even better, since this means the trigger will be in the centre of the field of view.
Which means:
a) Less random clicking, to find the trigger.
And:
b) You can gauge the distance, by how far up the screen the trigger is.

If it's not possible to use your pet to locate the triggers, you can probably coerce someone into helping you, for a coupla platinum pieces and a SoW. *Grin*

"Oh, one more thing.. they haven't fixed any of this so you can't use it anymore, have they? I mean the coin/no-drop trick? I hope not."
I dunno about this bit. I'd be suprised, that no-one had posted that it had been 'fixed', if it had been changed. However, hopefully you now have enough information to have a go at it and find out.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

AlAaraaf.

finding tanik
# Feb 18 2002 at 2:40 AM Rating: Default
I just found tanik at -6770 -3940. Half way down the side of the ramp on the ocean side. One thing I noticed that I did not read above it the fact then when you try to give coins to whatever the pet is facing, if it is the death sqauds it says they are "to far away to trade" all the way up until they spawn. But when I finaly found tanik I was able to see the "you stumble" from a distance. Also there seemed to be a lot of death squads close to the end of the ramp. From every thing I have read and what I found myself I would start in the side of the ramp in the middle on the ocean side. Good Luck!

Hmmmm, the "pet trick is out hands down" because you are a druid? Hehe, you get a spell called charm animal. Go find a snow bunny and charm it, it will ack the same as a mage or necro pet. Yes charm might break but those bunnies are pathetically weak so that should not be a problem.

Good luck

Side note for multi-questing. You don't have to be grouped with the person to do a MQ. In fact if you time it correctly, you can MQ with yourself. That is, another character on your account. Turn in, log off, log on other char, turn in other piece, voilla.

Just so you know, griffon eggs are not required to do the quest. A clump of dough can be made with any number of the eggs from anywhere in the world. Snake eggs from the newbie zone in Kaladim work just as well as griffon eggs and alot easier to get. 1 egg, 1 milk, 1 cup of flour and mix in a mixing bowl (made by smiths or potters) and viola!

ahh, griffon eggs are not needed.. right.. but SNOW GRIFFIN eggs are. for the 3rd shawl. you need the clump of dough for the "ulthork meat pie" for the crust... but after that, you need to make Thoradain a "Snow Griffin Souffle"

Just got the 4th shawl and it was the easiest yet. Most advice here is great.Glass shards are in vender in thurgadin. Buying silks and small bricks of velium was easy but the hardest part for me was finding 2 small PIECES of velium!!!
everyone seems to either not loot or destroy them none are found anywhere so i had a few friends get them from spiders in velks. finding tanik was a mere 5 min of my time and i had no clue what to do except from notes here!! thanks to all who post things!! Yes use ur pet and use a coin hold in front of u as u walk around clicking on coin until it says you stumble!!!follow path pet is pointing but the guy who said start around location neg 6644, 4337 was kind of right for me..
I found tanik at loc NEG 6753, pos 3958,pos 179 .
My pet was pointing in his direction!! I am shaman. I also started near top of ramp and worked my way towards ocean side of ramp up sides of ramp and into field near tree... I found him NOT on the ramp area or even on the sides of ramp on top... but near a tree on ocean side of ramp at the location i gave u..I gated back to thurg and in less than 10 min had the 4th shawl..
good luck all

Hey.

A mere coupla months after starting the third quest, I finally finished this. This quests is just so much easier than the third, it defies belief. (I think I did this whole quest in less time than it took me to get a single griffin egg!)

The trick of using a NO DROP item for locate the triggers and testing whether they're giants, or Tannik is well known. As is using a pet, to locate roughly where the nearest trigger is. However, here is my own little enhancement...

(It's not inconceivable that this has been posted before. But, I have visited this page many times and have never noticed it. I wondered it this would work for months, before I got to test it... It works real nicely!)

Necromancer's have a spell that allows them to bind their sight to their pet. Which means, you see what the pet sees. (I'm sure some other class gets a similar spell, but I can't for the life of me think which.) This greatly enhances using the pet to locate the trigger. Normally, you'd know the trigger is roughly somewhere in that direction... But this way, your vision is centered on it. So you only have to click your NO DROP object more or less, along the centre of your screen.

I found Tannik's trigger within maybe fifteen minutes of starting to look for it. It was the third trigger I'd found. However, because I could tell so clearly where the giant triggers were, I avoided them easilly. (No giant spawns triggered at all!)

Anyhow, hope this is useful.

AlAaraaf.
