After finishing the first three quests, ask Loremaster Borannin 'What is brewing?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh yes, good to see you again Maeve . I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil is one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a very important mission and has not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescue party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?'

You say, 'I will accept this mission'

Loremaster Borannin says 'The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance. Scour the regions surrounding the city of the Giants. Discover what happened to Tanik and, if possible, return him to Thurgadin. If you are successful, remember to hand me your woven shawl. We seem to be running low on them, but I must say Mordin has never had so much help in the kitchen. Anyway, I will eagerly await word of your findings. Good luck, and may Brell protect you.'

If you wander around the Eastern Wastes near NEG 6644 POS 4337 you will eventually see a message "the snow crumbles away revealing an injured coldain." This reveals Tanik Greskil.

You say, 'Hail, Tanik Greskil'

Tanik Greskil says 'Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help.'

You say, 'I will help'

Tanik Greskil says 'Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics.'

You say, 'What are velium vapors?'

Tanik Greskil says 'Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope.'

Once back in Thurgadin, find Frundle.

You say, 'Hail, Frundle Frenklar'

You say, 'What velium vapors?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret.'

You say, 'What velium vial?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet.'

You receive a Velium Purifier.

Small Pieces of Velium and Small Blocks of Velium can be looted on Ry`Gorr Miners in Crystal Caverns or off spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth.

Crystalline Silk can be found on spiders in both zones.

1) Combine a small (7 lb) brick of velium, three unstacked crystalline silks and two glass shards in a pottery wheel. You will receive an Unfired Velium Vial.

2) Combine the Unfired Velium Vial and a HQ firing sheet in the kiln and receive a Velium Vial.

3) Combine the Velium Vial and two unstacked small pieces of Velium in the Velium purifier. The Velium Purifier disappears and you are left with a Vial of Velium Vapors. The vial is a lore item and has one charge of gate to Thurgadin.

The vial is trivial at skill 122.

Do not camp the spot where Tanik Greskil is, because I did it, and got a message: You have been ambushed by frost giants! And two Kromrif Death Squad will spawn, and try to kill you.

When you get Tanik Greskil to spawn again, just hand him the vial.


Tanik Greskil says 'Thank you. I shall be eternally grateful to you. Should you ever require my assistance I pledge to you my aid. Please deliver this to Borannin, it is imperative that he deliver this to the Dain at once. Farewell for now outlander...'

You gain experience!!

Then head back to Thurgadin and hand Boradinn the note and your old shawl, for the new shawl.

Loremaster Borannin says 'Words cannot express our gratitude for your deeds outlander, you have saved a hero of our people from certain death. Please accept this, the Fur-lined shawl, as a token of our sincere appreciation. You are indeed among the most highly regarded Humans to set foot in Thurgadin. The lady that gives the velium purifier won't do so if you're apprehensive. I did the first two quests with my 15 enc and 10 shm and MQ'd the 3rd off my main's seal. Did this at apprehensive, no problem.

But when I asked "what velium vapors?" she insulted my breath and pretty much told me to get lost. Cast alliance on her and she handed over the purifier. =) (oh yea... alliance put me up to indifferent)

Guess my alt shammy's gunna have to wait on faction to proceed.

I hate to tell everyone but Tanik Greskil DOES NOT spawn in the same spot every time. My guess is once you've exposed him he has to move to avoid being caught by the Death Squad. I found him for the first part of the text asking what velium vapors but then he moved to the other side of the top of the Kael ramp for the turn in. My reccomendation is to have a controable pet class with you and have them as stated above tell him to guard just a short bit out from the top of the ramp and line up really well with the pet and just take off running, not walking. If you run dead over him he uncovers but if you're walking then you end up spending too much time in that area and will probably spawn the squad and have to zone out or try to kill them. He will generally be somewhere around the ramp within a short distance so you don't need to run out very far. Hope this helps clear this part up a bit.

I have done that quest 3 times... first with my druid, I followed the directions, spwaning the dwarf, then making the potion and spawn it again. Then my chanter, I made the vial first and then spawned the dwarf. Finally my NEC was not able to get the purifier... My druid and chanter had hunted and killed giants for their heads and transfered the spare head to the NEC. So the druid and chanter both had good faction, NEC had apprehensive. So kee killing giants until you get anything higher than indifferent, but make sure you got the vial before going to EW, it's already a pain to spawn the dwarf once, having to do it twice is really torture.

I just did this today. First I followed directions on someone's post here and killed the two guards at the bottom of the ramp. I put guard on my charmed pet at the top of the ramp and walked backwards facing the direction my pet faced. Hello Death Squad. They spawned to the south. I escaped with 9% health.
My 2nd attempt I didn't bother killing the guards at the bottom of the ramp. I just charmed and did pet guard again. Hello Death Squad. This time I was more prepared and escaped. They despawned quickly and again popped to the south.
I was hopeful with my 3rd attempt because the pet faced in a northerly direction. Tanik popped for me at -5683.26, 3974.90

Yes killing the guards helps alot, and "top" of ramp was misleading however he means place your pet at the beginning of the slope furthest from kael, I had the little guy spawn within 20 secons also, no death squads super easy. So yes kill guards, yes place pet at the beginning of the slope furthest from kael on north side, have fun :)

Yes, you have to kill the giants at the entrance to Kael or your pet will continually point at them, which basically ruins the whole "pet is gonna find him" theory.

Pets always point to the nearest mob when placed on guard. My guess is someone realized they were pointing into space one day, and voila.

Followed the -5660 ZOne line West as suggested in the previous post. Took only 2 passes back and forth before he showed his fugly little self, and i handed him his vial so he could get some dorf lovin back home. It was Approx 9AM gametime, ive seen in suggested he only spawns in the daytime. Goodluck to all the Shawl Questers out there!

While preparing to finish up the 4th Shaw quest I looked over all the pages I could find that discussed Tanik Greskil. There seems to be a huge variation in posted locations as well as the walk don't run theory. I decided to do some testing of my own. First I compiled a list of all the spawn locations people posted. Here they are.

North side of ramp.
-5680, 4126
-5670, 4576
-5672, 4307
-5679, 4206
-5683, 4252
-5687, 4435
-5696, 3600
-5702, 4505
-5702, 4384

South side of ramp.
- 6644, 4337
- 6703, 3885
- 6759, 4410
- 6759, 4202

Clumped together like this I am sure you notice what in noticed. Many seem to fall along an East/West line at different points.

As my main toon is a 46 Ranger and can not do the pet trick everyone post’s about I did it the Non-Caster way, multi-quest.

Have your Vile of Velium Vapors ready. Camp your main toon at the end of the ramp ready to log on once you get Tanik to spawn.

First, I did what “unloved” suggested and created a Level 1 Warrior follower of Rallos Zek. This allowed me to spend the better part of a day testing spawn points without getting stopped by the Giants every time they spawned.

Second, I tested each of the listed spawn points walking and running. None of them worked for me. However while running from spot to spot I did manage to spawn the death squad a few times so made notes on the locations to test later. As the Giants would not agro this Rallos Zek follower I was able to determine they are up for 2 minutes until they pop as long as they do not agro.

I did notice running East to West the zone is made up of very faint light and dark lines. If you look at the screen without focusing on any one thing it is pretty noticeable. This lead me to try my spawn line theory.

I lined my toon up on the E/W spawn point I had noted ( in the -56** area most noted by people) so there was no variation running E/W and then I ran forward and backward along this line. Starting Back by the cluster of trees on the North side of the ramp I walked from about –5679, 3500 to –5679, 6000 and got 4 Death Squad to spawn while running. Frustratingly I was never able to get anything to spawn again. So as there is such a wide variation of –56** locations I moved over a bit and tried again this time at –5677. This time I tried it walking and boom….got a spawn at –5677, 4485 of 2 DS . Yea!!!! I continued to walk back and forth between –5677, 3500 and –5677, 6000 and after 15 to 20 minutes boom…..got another spawn of 2 DS this time a –5677, 4366. This time I tried it running. Boom… got 4 DS to spawn at –5600,4206. Ok so I continued this for most of the day and got 7 spawns all at different locations on the –5677 line. I was never able to get a repeat spawn point and went on to get 4DS, 4DS, 2DS and finally 4DS and Tanik Greskil spawned about three steps apart from each other. I spent so much time verifying this theory that I never tried to find another “spawn line”.

Reading all the comments and my own testing leads me to believe that the spawn points are random along the spawn line. I also believe the spawn of the Death Squad or Tanik Greskil is also random. Lack of Attention to Detail caused me to not nail down the spawn time but I found it between 15-20 minutes.

Once Tanik Greskil did spawn I did as another suggested and continued to “Hail” him. Once the Death Squad was gone I sat down next to him and camped, continuing to hail him until I logged. I then logged on my main toon, whom I had strategically camped at the end of the ramp, and within 45 seconds I was on top of him hailing him until I could get the Vial of Velium Vapors, I had already made so I didn’t have to do this a second time, out and give it to him. No chit chat I just gave it to him and he immediately popped and I had Tanik's Note to turn in to Loremaster Borannin.

Oh I did have a couple of random DS spawns while running around but did not them. One was at the top of the ramp to the north side and the other was to the south side. I just focused on this one spawn line. And I got a few pictures to send for Tanik and the Death Squad that is not even listed in the Bestiary.

So in a nut shell: Completely random along the E/W line, at least on the north side of the ramp. Also the spawn of 2DS, 4DS or Tanik is random. Running or Walking, though maybe smaller steps increase your chance of hitting the trigger spot as would be the case in real life? DS will de-pop after about 2 minutes if they do not agro. Spawn cycle seems to be between 10-15 minutes. And you can keep Tanik there if you contiue to "Hail" him.

pET WORKED GREAT...I CHARMED ONE OF THE GUARDS AND KILLED THE OTHER THEN USED THE GUARD AS SENTINEL...SPAWNED 5 SETS OF DS (LAST 4 WERE POPS OF 4)...THEN DECIDED TO MOVE GUARD BACK FROM RAMP A BIT....GOT THE LITTLE BOOGAR TO SPAWN...NOT SURE IF JUST COINCIDENCE OR NOT BUT WHAT I DID.

Got Tanik to spawn in 15 minutes. Dont need a pet, just the location...it's -6759.38 +4410.50 (right on top of him). Don't hail him, just hand him vial and "poof". No levi, no invisi, just go back and forth over area (would of been quicker but spawned DS first time :(...). GL and have sow on : )

Agree - pet trick works perfectly. I got the DS on my first 5 attempts, but got Tanik on the 6th. Took me a while to find Tanik though, because his spawn point was to the north and far west end of the opening to the Kael ramp. All the first 5 attempts popped the DS at different locations around the ramp opening, so I spent about 20 minutes on the 6th try looking in vain around the same areas. Finally decided to plant the pet at a bunch of different places and finally got him.

I had to wander around for about half an hour and Tanik finally poped at loc -6755, +4409 I had the vial of velium vapors made for him already so I wouldn't have to try to make him pop twice. Once you see him, hail him and then give him the vial and you will get what you need. Patience is the key, don't get frustrated. Hope this helps

Also I wanted to add a neat little list of what all you will need for thie quest.
1 small brick of velium
3 Crystalline Silks
2 Glass shards
1 HQ firing sheet
2 Small Peices of Velium
Get the velium purifier, just walk up to Frundle Frenklar(loc -340, +505, in a shop in that area) and say to her "What velium vapors?" and you will get the purifier.
Last thing patience.. lots of it. The list is good only if you make what you need in one attempt.

Glass Shards are vendor sold on almost any pottery vendor. If you're in Thurgadin, they're sold by the left-most vendor in the room with the bank and the pottery wheel and kiln.

Ok I just completed this part so I will share my experience.

First I ran around like a headless chicken. Ran over a trigger, got a death squad which ripped through my pet in slightly less than the casting time of Feign Death. After being feigned for a minute or so, the giants de-popped. So, being unbuffed, I ran back to PoK. While I was waiting for virtue I read the posts here and decided how I would this on my second try.

Had a friend make a level 1 Rallos Zek warrior. We met up in PoK and ran to EW. I parked my pet at the top of the ramp and made it guard. Warrior ran where the pet was looking to set off the triggers. He was walking, not running. Had sow but eventually lost it. Worked both with and without sow. Found one trigger south of Kael entrance, one due east. Each time the squad popped, it stood there doing nothing and eventually de-popped. We were looking for a third trigger that we were having trouble set off when finally I told him to just try again the first one we had found, hoping the refresh time would be over. It was and we got the dwarf.

Totals:
2 death squads
1 coldain dwarf
0 deaths
1 very happy necro!

I found him today in about 45 minutes. Triggered 5 Death Squads in the process. One while running from one I had just triggered. Four of the five Squads were at neg 5676 pos 4307, neg 5702 pos 4384, neg 5702 pos 4505 and neg 6703 pos 3885. (Didn't bother noting the loc of the one I triggered while already running... lol) Finally found Tanik at neg 5696 pos 3600. Oh and a side note: the first 2 squads I triggered I had SoW and Levitate on. Had SoW on for all of the triggers including Tanik, but hadn't bothered to recast levitate by the time I stumbled over him. And you will know it. He makes a noise like you did just kick him in the snow. heh

Did this today for the second time. Today I triggerred several DS with 4 giants in it, did not have that on my first time about a year ago.

Also found the dorf on the Right side(facing Kael) eventually.

help me out here yall...im working on this for my cleric. baised on the posts im gathering ihave to walk around the outside of the trench to kael...now i have walked (not ran) all up n down this never hitting one trigger. i dont get what im doing wrong...i even went down the ramp into the valley there walking all around there even tho the loc's were not the same thinking i was doing this wrong. so ok 6 hours and NO trigger whatsoever...HELP

The triggers I found were not on the ramp or below. They were all outside of the ramp area, in the snow.

I pleaded a bl friend into bringing a pet, and doing the guard here method. Ironically however, I found tanik while kiting a death squad, while the BL peeled them one at a time and killed them.

Luckily, the DS didn't aggro tanik, and I was able to get to him, while the BL finished the giants.

Okay... to the left of the ramp (when facing kael)... I found a trigger which repeatedly spawned the Death Squad on me. Once, after I zoned them in kael, I apologized to some high lvl people who dealt with them for me and told them what I was doing. They told me they'd accidentally spawned the dwarf just a moment ago on the right side. I ran around for hours, and spawned the Death Squad four different times in that same spot. Then a 55 Conjurer came by with a pet and helped me find the trigger on the right side, and the dwarf spawned immediately.

The trigger was a little ways off from the ramp. I don't know if all the triggers are random or if he'll continually only spawn in one place until he's despawned, but this is how it was. Hours up on hours he wouldn't spawn on the left side. Twice in a row on the right. /shrugg
