NOTE: In order to complete this quest you will need the ability to Forage OR possibly have someone multiquest a foraged item for you (Multiquest not confirmed to work).

On the docks arriving into Iceclad are two gnomes, Nelet Durzit and Rendap.

You say, 'Hail, Nelet Durzit'

Nelet Durzit sneezes and wipes his hand across his nose. 'H-h-h-i.'

Rendap says, 'Nelet don't talk much anymore. All this cold really gets to 'im.'

You say, 'what cold'

Nelet Durzit talks through clenched, chattering teeth. 'Y-y-yeah. C-cursed cold. Sh-sh-shot of gnomish pirate triple strength rum's all I need ta fix me up, Rendap tells me. N-n-nilham lost it all, though.'

Inside one of the igloos in the gnome camp in Iceclad you can find Nilham the Chef.

You say, 'Hail, Nilham the Chef'

Nilham the Chef says, 'Ahoy, Bobbybick. Welcome ta the brig. I didn't get ta the 'B' section of my piratisms manual so I'm not sure what a brig is but I'm guessin' it means 'really small place without enough food or water.' So, ya here ta stay or just visitin'?'

Unknown how to coax the information out of Nilham from here as to the rum.

You say, 'what crate'

Nilham the Chef says, 'I'll be an aft port if I think anyone will ever see the crate and key again. If by some act o' Prexus you do, then take them ta the Cap'n. I'm sure he'd be thrilled to see it. Just don't remind him I'm here cause he might let me go and make me work again.'

You say, 'What cat'

Nilham the Chef says, 'That was a nasty cat. I dun think it was after us, though. I think it just smelled the fresh chunk of wooly rhino jerky I had. It didn't do anythin' but knock us over. I guess that's what it likes, walrus. After it knocked us over it slipped away towards the bridge island like a ghostly mist. I'm thinkin' I saw a glimmer in its maw while it was runnin' off.'

The Crate

Gnomish deserter can be found in the middle of Great Divide, on top of a mountain that sits above the wurm caves. He is sitting down at the peak and can be easy to miss.

You say, 'Hail, gnomish deserter'

Gnomish deserter smiles at you and nods congenially. 'Hullo there. Nice ta meet ya.' He moves to shake your hand and then seems to remember that his hand is currently frozen to a very heavy, very solid hunk of metal shaped somewhat like a box.

You say, 'what is that box'

Gnomish deserter says, 'Huh? Box? Where's a box? Heh. I don't see a box.'

You say, 'how did you get your hand stuck'

Gnomish deserter says, 'Erm. Well ya see. One day I was on guard duty and a huge white cat knocked me over. It looked like it was running away towards the bridge island. Anyways, I fell into the water. I guess I passed out because next thing I knew I was over near the gnolls laying on top of this huge box. It's then that I made the decision.'

You say, 'what decision'

Gnomish deserter says, 'To leave. I'm really tired of this pirate stuff. Captain Nalot said it was gonna be great fun and an adventure but all I've seen is a lot of biscuits, slush water, and guard duty. So I'm here.'

You say, 'how did you get here'

Gnomish deserter says, 'Yup. This isn't such a bad spot. It's nice and peaceful. I can see for miles and every once in a while someone like you drops by to talk. There's no guard duty and I don't have to say 'Arrrr' anymore. That really starts to hurt your throat, you know. The only problem I have anymore is my hand frozen to this box. If ya find a way to fix it let me know.'

Find Pythic Urson in Thurgadin. He can be located inside the large bar in the northeast of the zone. You will need high Amiably faction for him to respond to hails but turnins can be done as low as dubious.

You say, 'Hail, Pythic Urson'

Pythic Urson turns and looks at you. 'What?' He goes back to drinking his ale and resting.

You say, 'what ale'

Pythic Urson says, 'Its a fine Coldain ale. Good for quenchin yer thirst after a hard day of minin. The ales name doesnt matter cause ya wouldnt be able to hold it down anyways. Har har.'

You say, 'what mining'

Pythic Urson says, 'Aye. Mining. Im a miner. Thats a hard one to put together eh? Yer about as sharp as me hammer and as quick as the mining crud on me boots.'

You say, 'what crud'

Pythic Urson says, 'Mining crud, thats what I said. Mixture o' velium dust, mud, and whatever other junk is left on the floor after I be minin. Hard as a giant to fight off me boots.'

You say, 'boots'

Pythic Urson says, 'There used ta be a mixture we used ta clean off our boots but that was when we had more warriors ta get ta different places. Now it aint possible so the crud just keeps buildin up on me boots.'

You say, 'what warriors to get to different places'

Pythic Urson says, 'If you think ya can get what's needed then go ahead. The mixture used ta be made out of saps and acidic oozes. You find some and bring it to me maybe I can slap it together.'

The items Pythic needs are Bladder of Acidic Ooze which is a small side quest out of Cobalt Scar and Fresh Tree Sap which can be foraged in either Wakening Lands or Plane of Growth.

Find Qarrgy Scallopgobbler, an othmir located on the beach of Cobalt Scar.

Qarrgy Scallopgobbler sets down several large crustacean shells covered in foreign runes, then extends his large, coarse hands in a gesture of friendship. 'I am pleased to see friendly visitors to our villages. I am the head craftsman of the village. The crustacean shell armor worn by the warriors of our village was crafted by me and by my apprentices. I will craft other materials as well when they are available.'

You say, 'what crustacean shell armor'

Qarrgy Scallopgobbler says 'It takes awhile to make each piece. It has to go through a long burning process to clean away all old meat and dirt. Then it needs shaping and etching with runes.

You say, 'what burning process'

Qarrgy Scallopgobbler says 'Usually I use a mixture made from the livers of barraccudas. Their liquids are very strong and make good burning liquid. If you want some you need to bring me two barraccuda livers.

Barracuda Livers are uncommon/rare drops off the "a coldwater barracuda" located just off the shores of Cobalt Scar. You will need two of them.

Give Qarrgy TWO Barracuda Livers.

Qarrgy Scallopgobbler slams a knife into the various livers and squeezes out all of their various goos and juices. Eventually he seperates a bit of it and pours it into a protective bladder. 'Excellent work. This is a good catch. Here, you have sack of ooze. Its good for burning things off or etching metals. Thank you for your help.'

Receive: Bladder of Acidic Ooze.

Return to Pythic Urson in Thurgadin once you have both the Ooze and Tree Sap.

Give the Bladder of Acidic Ooze Ooze and Fresh Tree Sap to Pythic.

Pythic Urson laughs at you and then takes the sap and bladder. He mixes the two together and then adds something from a small pourch he carries. With a quick sizzle he pours some on his boots and the crud melts away. 'See that? Didn't do anything but get rid of the crud. This stuff is great. It doesn't burn yer skin or valuables. Here ya go, you can have the rest.'

Receive: Dissolving Liquid

Return to the gnomish deserter in Great Divide

Give the Dissolving Liquid to the gnomish deserter.

gnomish deserter grins and pours the ooze on his hand and the box. You hear a burning sizzle and then the box thumps onto the ground. 'Ow! Ow! Take it! Hah. I never thought I would get rid of that piece of...'

The Key

For this part you will need FOUR (4) Fresh Chunk of Wooly Rhino, these are rare drops from wooly rhinos in Eastern Wastes.

Mist Panther can be found in Wakening Lands, a bit south of the lake in the center. NOTE: This is not one of the many "haze panthers" that are found throughout the zone.

Give 4 Fresh Chunk of Wooly Rhino to the Mist Panther.

mist panther jumps at you and snatches the meat from your hand. It runs away from you and feasts on the other side of the water. As it runs away you notice a small shiny object fall from its mouth.

Receive: Golden Broken Key

Sojan the Sleepless can be found in one of the igloos in the gnomish camp in Iceclad.

You say, 'Hail, Sojan the Sleepless'

Sojan the Sleepless stares at you through bleary eyes. 'I get enough conversation from my wife. If ya want water or biscuits, buy em! Otherwise, leave me alone!'

You say, 'what conversation from your wife'

Sojan the Sleepless says, 'Since ya like talkin', then fine. You wanna do me a favor? Go get me some wolf fur earmuffs so I don't gotta listen to ya, or her, any more.'

Errgriz is a gnoll that can be found in one of the huts southwest of Tower of Frozen Shadow in Iceclad Ocean.

You say, 'Hail, Errgriz'

Errgriz says 'Errrr. You come for master, learning like me?'

You say, 'What are you learning?'

Errgriz says 'I am learning ways of skinning and tailoring. None left but the master so I must learn to help. For now I only clean the furs.'

You say, 'You clean furs?'

Errgriz says 'Yes. I clean the furs and then the master makes things from them.'

You say, 'What things do you make?'

Errgriz says 'I wish I could make things. Headcoverings, to keep cold from head is what I want to make. I think I ready but not able to make until I get furs. Master says to find skin of high quality, thick and strong, but I have no training in hunting.'

High Quality Dire Wolf Fur are uncommon drops from Dire Wolves throughout Velious.

Give Errgriz a High Quality Dire Wolf Fur.

Errgriz starts to cut and scrape the furs. He growls softly as he works and his master watches his progress. 'Grrr. Much too small. I fail. I not ready to work on my own. Sorry to waste your time. Here, take what I made. Maybe you can find use for it.'

Receive: Wolf Fur Earcovers

Return to Sojan the Sleepless back at the gnome camp.

Give the Wolf Fur Earcovers to Sojan.

Sojan the Sleepless stares at you and then laughs before putting on the earmuffs. As he moves around, blissfully protected from the noise, a fine chain slips from his coat. 'Hey! Look at that! What a fine chain! It looks familiar but I can't tell how. Oh, well, you can have it. It looks like it could be used to fill gaps or if needed to repair another similar metal object. I can do that if you ever find need.

Receive: Fine Gold Chain

Give Sojan the Fine Gold Chain and the Golden Broken Key.

Sojan the Sleepless puts a tiny eyeglass up to his eye and studies the key and chain. "Aye, this looks like the perfect metal to fix this key. Gimmie just a moment." He uses fine and minute tools to pick and push the chain and key over a fire. "Ha!" Don't say I ain't never done anythin for ya. There ya go, Bobbybick."

Receive: Rum Box Key

With both the Rum Box Key and the Locked Rum Box you are almost done. Head to Captain Nalot in one of the igloos opposite of Sojan in Iceclad.

Give Captain Nalot the Rum Box Key and the Locked Rum Box

Captain Nalot says, "Land ho! That be me rum! Where did ya get that? Ah nevermind. Gimme those things. Just a bit of a turn here... and a pick there... and a twist... and she's unlocked, har! Here, take a jug. It'll be the least I can do fer ye. We'll be havin a party tonight lads!'

Receive: Capt. Nalot's Triple Strength Rum

Return to Nelet Durzit down by the docks in Iceclad.

Give Nelet the Capt. Nalot's Triple Strength Rum

Nelet Durzit greedily swigs rum from the jug. After a few drinks, he starts to gag and make faces. 'Oh geez! Rendap told me this stuff was strong, but this tastes like clockwork grease! It burns but now I feel - ugh.

Nelet doubles over and passes out on the ground. As he falls over, a small silver trinket slips out of his pocket.

Renday points and laughs as Nelet falls over. "That'll put hair on yer ears, boy. Suck it up. Least ya ain't shiverin' o' cold anymore, eh?"

Receive: Rough Silver Chain

Just a suggestion... The "Fresh Tree Sap" is not a combine task of the quest, it's a turn in with another item. Thus it can be Multi-quested and was likely designed that way. Find a friendly Forager, we are around!

Did a large update to the quest writeup for this as it was missing quite a bit of information.

In the off chance anyone from Coirnav or Live servers actually go through this quest please let us know if anything is wrong.

Edit: I'm still not sure how to prompt Nilham to talk about the Crate and Rum for the breadcrumb for how to start this quest. His standard dialogue appears to end talking about sitting in the Brig but nobody in camp would speak to it.

ok this may sound dumb, but one of the items neded is foraged and nodrop, but yet only 1 of the classes that can use this item can forage, sounds like this needs to be adressed.

Here are the classes that can equip the reward:
CLR DRU SHM NEC WIZ MAG ENC

Iksar Shamans and Iksar Necromancers can also obtain and wear this item (iksars have forage as an innate racial skill).

But, your point is well taken. There are no clerics, wizards, magicians, or enchanters that can forage the NO DROP item that is part of this quest.

Baracuda Livers

Am in the process of doing this quest at the moment.

Found one of the Baracuda livers from the first one we killed, but then started having a few problems finding any more. Enlisted the help of a guildie druid, who tracked them for us, and bingo! another liver on the 3rd or 4th kill. They're really not so hard to find, but yes they ARE nodrop, so you can't buy them.

<EDIT> Ok, now completed this quest with the help of ranger and druid friends to forage the Tree Sap and to track the Mist Panther and wolf form me for the turn in. Be careful and have invis up in WL, as one of the giants there blitzed my lvl 55 Druid guildmistress in seconds!

Just a note - when you go looking for the Gnomish Deserter, he is right on top of the mountain over the Wurm tunnels. Don't make the mistake I did and go running into the tunnels to look for him, have invis drop, and get your butt handed to you! He was amiable to me, a DE Necro.

Personally I think this quest is well worth doing, and I'm very proud of my new neck piece! =)

This quest is bullshit :)
# May 18 2002 at 12:09 AM Rating: Excellent
Did this quest the other day with a good cleric friend of mine. Enlisted the help of a druid from my guild for the tree sap and wolf form to do the turn-in to the mist panther.

Obtaining the fresh rhino meat wasn't really a problem. It's uncommon, but not that bad. There are also plenty of rhinos to kill in East Wastes, and people killing them for experience will happily sell you some fresh rhino meat for a little platinum and some buffs. Took an hour or two overall.

High quality dire wolf furs. Again, not a problem, pretty common drop and plenty of dire wolves to kill.

Barracuda livers. Herein lies the major problem with this quest -- these things are really rare. The barracudas are relatively easy to find, even without a tracker, but there are limited quantities of them and they share at least a couple spawn spots with other mobs, forcing you to kill things you don't need to in order to have barracudas to kill. We spent nearly six hours in Cobalt Scar before even seeing one of these, and it took an additional five hours to get the other three. We killed a total of 89 barracudas, around 50 sharks, a half dozen or so sirens, and a couple enchanted chests.

The reward for this quest is nothing stellar. It's decent, but it is not worth the time required to obtain it nor the bother of inconveniencing a druid/ranger to help with the other parts. Spend a few hundred platinum, buy a 65 hp/mana necklace, and save yourself a world of boredom. =)

I wanted this item for the resists, and for that purpose it is an excellent little piece, especially since it's for free.

I got the rhino meats while I was hunting for exp in EW, so I didn't have to spend any extra time looking for them. I foraged the tree sap one time in WL when I was just passing through. I got the barracuda livers very easily. They were on the third and fourth barracuda that I killed. No PH killing at all. Killed the three on my track, sat down to med and then tracked the new patch. And happened to see the dire wolf fur on a vendor in Thurgadin.

So I guess it all depends on your luck. If it's good, the quest is a piece of cake. If not, I'm sure it can be frustrating.

"Spend a few hundred platinum, buy a 65 hp/mana necklace, and save yourself a world of boredom."

Of course, a 65hp/65mana necklace doesn't have +5 to all saves, and the saves are the main reason that people do this quest.

True but BD necklaces have MORE then 5 to all resists. They sell for only 1k or so in bazaar now. They also have mana on them just no hp or ac.

/agree wuleril

The only reason I would do this is because I am too poor to buy resist gear. For that reason, it is an excellent reward with it's +5sv all.

not everyone has 1k to spend on a neck piece

this is good in the fact its free, and not hard to get, not like a druid can't solo this quest the whole way.
my experiences with the rhino meat

ok. yet another quest piece that drops in EW (quester's homeland). The absolute best time to do this quest and the coldain shawl or ring quests(well the first couple at least), is right around lvls 44-47 or so. rhino's are still blue (Well through 46 for sure. not sure if that will last to 47 but i'd imagine it would) As a druid EW is one of the best places to solo anywhere. I'm not talking about quading the ulthorks either. (although that is one of the best places to quad) This is animal heaven. I went all the way through 45 charming animals here while questing through the shawl quests 1-4 (took me about 12hrs game time). Rhino's and mammoths were the best pets, as they had lots of hp, so i'd charm a pet. go after what i needed (giants and snow griffins mostly for the shawl quest) then kill off the pet afterwards and hope for that elusive frest rhino meat. all in all a very fun way to level as compared to the downtime of quading, or root dotting. Just a bit of advice for those out there looking to get exp and a reward.

Totally Multiquestable?
# Mar 13 2002 at 1:00 PM Rating: Default
It seems to me that with help, this item is completely multiquestable. A lvl 1 could get this item by only turning in the HQ dire wolf skin, which is not no drop. A higher lvl (with some druid help) could complete the rest. Please correct me if I have missed something.

Definitely, the wolf form will allow you to finish this part of the quest. I was KOS to the Mist Panther (Erudite Wizard). A druid cast wolf form on me and then I passed to be indiferent to the panther. Gave it the meat and got my broken key back. Good luck to all !

RE: umm
# Feb 05 2002 at 2:52 PM Rating: Excellent
Seemed kinda odd to me at first too, but i think it can be MQ'd. For ease of explanation ive split it into 2 sections. Section 1 needs to be done by the foraging class, while section 2 is done by whoever is supposed to get the reward.

Section 1) **to be done by forager**
Step 1 - GIVE (2) barracuda livers to Qarrgy Scallopgobbler. RECEIVE bladder of acidic oozes.
Step 2 - FORAGE sap in WL.
Step 3 - GIVE sap + bladder to Pythic Urson in Thurg. RECEIVE boot-cleaning mixture.
Step 4 - GIVE mixture to gnomish deserter in GD. RECEIVE locked case.
Step 5 - GIVE Mist Panther (4) fresh rhino meat. RECEIVE broken key.

Section 2) *to be done by intended receiver of chains**
Step 1 - GIVE Errgiz a HQ dire wolf pelt. RECEIVE wolf-hide earmuffs.
Step 2 - GIVE Sojan the Sleepless the earmuffs. RECEIVE a chain.
Step 3 - <FORAGER> GIVE Sojan the Sleepless the broken key.
Step 4 - <NON-FORAGER> GIVE Sojan the Sleepless the chain. RECEIVE repaired key.
Step 5 - <FORAGER> GIVE box to Capt.Nalot.
Step 6 - <NON-FORAGER> GIVE repaired key to Capt.Nalot. RECEIVE triple strength rum.
Step 7 - <NON-FORAGER> GIVE Nelet Durzit triple strength rum. RECEIVE rough silver chain.

I havent tried this as of yet, so if anyone does try, please post as to if it works or not. GL all, hope it helped.

Only the sap itself needs to be multi quested. Have a forager give the sap first, then hand in the bladder of oozes.

The method you suggest would also work. However, the 4 pieces of fresh rhino meat are probably the hardest part of this quest, as it is a very rare drop.

I enjoy killing those othmir for fun and profit. I doubt I can get enough faction back in my lifetime to hand in the livers myself. Is the Bladder of Acidic Oozes no-drop?

What about the rest of the items?

barracuda livers - ?
Fresh Tree Sap - no-drop
boot-cleaning-mixture - ?
locked case - ?
Fresh Chunk of Wooly Rhino - ?
broken key - ?

You get the point.

Thanks
wolf-hide earmuffs - ?

just curious what gnoll faction you need for this quest. i don't usually hunt in ic, but i know way back when i killed a few of those gnolls while waiting on lodi to spawn. also, just curious how you can raise the gnoll faction. i think i'm dubious to them. can i still do the quest?

If you go kill a bunch of ulthorks in EW, one of the faction adjusts will be SnowFangGnolls, which I believe is the right faction. After about 300 ulthorks and walruses, I'm warmly to em. Good luck.

Rhino`s the pain for me
# Sep 05 2001 at 2:46 AM Rating: Default
Well I`ve killed 38 rhino`s tonight and not one 'fresh' meat. Looted lots of regular meat. I can tell I`m gonna have some problems with this part of the quest. Thought I would have a tough time with the CS part but was pretty easy obtaining the livers. I killed 5 barracuda`s and got the 2 livers. I`m a 54 Druid so gave it a Engulfing Root (160dmg) and a Scoriae (688dmg). The pelt was easy, got it on first kill. Took me awhile but I did manage to forage the sap so that just leaves me with the rhino meat, aghh! Hope this information helps but from what I read above, you can have a hard time on any part of this quest or none at all.

I'm a Gnome Necro (Bertoxx) and I've been trying to get the mist panther portion of this quest done with no luck.

I handed in the meats while invis and got the "I will not help you" message. I also did it with wolf form (which changed the con to indifferent) and didn't get any message.

I did have all my main inventory slots full, so I'm gonna give wolf form another shot.

In reference to the sap being no drop..get friends. You can multiquest the part with the box, just have them give the captain the box and then you give him the key and you get the reward.

Didn't attack at threateningly, but got "I will not aid a being like you" when turning in the meat at threateningly.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jul 14 2001 at 3:04 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) YOu didnt get wolfed to do this quest. Wolf form is KOS EVERYWHERE in Vel. I am one of the few druids that will wolf anywhere in vel.

Wolf form is not KOS - it drops your faction down a couple degrees with the townspeople and guards. So...if you have good faction before wolf form, you'll have ok faction with wolf form.

Actually wolf form is NOT KOS everywhere in Velious. Although it is much more common to have wolf form drop you to KOS in Veliuos than it is anywhere else in Norrath. I did this quest and wolf form changed me from dubious to amiable with the mist panther. So if you are worried about faction and those 4 precious chunks of wooly rhino meat, I would grab a friendly druid and have him cast share wolf form on you and then turn in the meat. GL and safe travels.

I am a de necro I would like to warn people of what happened to me. Whoever posted above that the quest can be done while con is threatingly is not correct. While the beast did not attack me,he did eat all 4 of my fresh chunk of wooly rhino meat, saying" I will not help dark ones like you" 10 hours wasted hunting rhinos BAH! BAH! BAH! /rude anonymous
