After completing the "Series C Black Boxes" quest, you received a Daily Log ("Log Sheet of Clockwork 27c2"). Take this to Drekon Vebnebber (General Supplies) in Ak'Anon at location +875, -475 (he's on Find).

You say, 'Hail, Drekon Vebnebber'

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Hello, _____. It is grand to make your acquaintance. I am the in-house merchant-slash-file clerk. I have goods to offer and I handle all the Gemchopper paperwork. Thrilling, don't you think?'

Hand in the Daily Log:

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Oh my! It seems two of the obsolete duster models were not fully shut down. You must find them. They could be anywhere in Ak'Anon! After you destroy them, take their scraps to Sanfyrd Montop. He is the operator of the scrapyard.'

Your faction standing with Gem Choppers has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Merchants of AkAnon has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with King AkAnon has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Dark Reflection has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Clan Grikbar has been adjusted by -1.
You gain party experience!!

Kill "Duster X" and "Duster V" and loot their scrap metals.

Duster V spawns near the clockwork receptionist and travels to the pod area and back before despawning. It can sometimes be seen walking down the path through "the wall" just inside the city entrance and around the Priest of Discord area. At a certain point in his usual path he goes from walk speed to run speed. He shares a spawn cycle with Scrubber IV and Cleaner X, each one of them despawns after a few minutes before another one from the cycle respawns.

Duster X is reportedly triggered after you gave the report to Drekon. It spawns by the mechanic by the tinkerer and travels up to the bridge then back near the paddlewheel. It's loot-locked, which means it shows as *Duster X and shows at the first rank on alphabetic track.

You have slain Duster V!
--You have looted a Scrap Metal.--
Item Lore: Duster V Scrap Metal.

You have slain Duster X!
--You have looted a Scrap Metal.--
Item Lore: Duster X Scrap Metal.

Find Sanfyrd Featherhead at location 2020, -240 in Ak'Anon (on the other side of the river across from the Mines of Malfunction).

You say, 'Hail, Sanfyrd Featherhead'

Sanfyrd Featherhead says 'Greetings! I am the operator of this scrapyard. If you have any scrap metal, I would be glad to purchase it from you in loads of four. The Gemchoppers no longer allow me to accept blackbox fragments and micro servos.'

Hand in the two Scrap Metals:

Sanfyrd Featherhead says 'I hear there is one more on the loose. Find him and then I shall pay you.'
Sanfyrd Featherhead says 'Good. The citizens of Ak'Anon are safe from those little critters. They may have injured someone; that is why they were deactivated. Here is something I found in the scrapyard. I hope you can find a purpose for it.'

Been awhile since someone posted to this thread. So, here's an update:
Everything works just like the walkthrough. I got lucky and was able to come across the duster v accidentally, in the halls a little past the entrance gates but before the first waterfall. Here's some missing dialogue (after turning in the scraps): Sanfyrd FEATHERHEAD says 'I hear there is one more on the loose. Find him and I will pay you.'
Sanfyr Featherhead says 'Good. The citizens of Ak'Anon are safe from these litle critters. They may have injured someone; that is why they were deactivated. Here is something I found in the scrapyard. I hope you can find a purpose for it.' Normal faction hits. Using a gnome mage lvl 12. non-twinked.
Easy peesy

Did this quest last night with my warrior. The only hard part is getting to duster X quickly (especially as a tall race... damn low ceilings). It might not be necessary to race to him since I saw someone say he paths a couple of times before despawning, but I was taking no chances. The walkthrough is good, but aside from finding the C clockworks you can find pretty much everyone through quest dialogue. Just note that the final turn in guy has had a name change.
Confused? I was too...

After reading the posts here about a thousand times, I decided to try this quest (or rather try to get it).

Fisrt off, as of feb 17 2006, its still a fully active, fully functional quest. Got the duster quest first time though Blackbox C.

Secondly, Duster X (the one that doesnt spawn until you turn in your note) can be found at the water wheel (north end of the map). If you miss him and hes gone by the time you get there, just wait for him and he'll come back.

Duster V I had a slight problem with, but only because I had a problem understanding where he'd be. Searched for about 10 mins, went BIO, and he attacked me about 20 seconds after i got back. Was parked just inside the wall next to the PoD, at the fork between fish merch and the rest of AK.

Both were easy DB kills to my lvl 9 gnome ENC non-twinked.

The pack:
Bootstrutter's Framed Pack
Lore Item No Trade
WT: 2.5 Weight Reduction: 10%
Capacity: 10 Size Capacity: LARGE

Hope this helps :)

Duster X and V

Hi all....

Just did the Duster quest, so it is still active... I found the Duster X at the wheelbarrel across the bridge. He does not Despawn as suggested in one of the posts...

Found Duster V on the bridge outside the receptionist... (I also saw Duster X there so if he is not at the wheelbarrel, than check here)

Hope it helps

After handing in Jogl's note, Dregon instructs you to turn the two scrap metal pieces to "Sanfyrd Montop". The NPC you need to track is actually named "Sanfyrd Featherhead".

Also, if you are not KOS to Sanfyrd, you can skip all the annoying faction work and still get the bag. I got my gnome necro his Bootstrutter bag by having my druid do all the running around and killing, then letting the necro loot and hand in the metal pieces.

EDIT: I recently went back to do this quest for a new alt and it seems the quest has been taken out. None of the mobs in Steamfont dropped the metal boxes you need for faction. Also, there was a new NPC as soon as you enter Ak'Anon that I never saw before. I hailed it and followed some text, then it mentioned something (I wish I would have written it down, but he imediately despawned, and ran around looking for him) that makes me believe the Bootstrutter bag quest is no longer available. I brought my druid to see if I could get the bag quest going, but I kept getting Red-V quests instead.

If anyone has been able to do this quest lately, please post it here.

Sanfyrd Featherhead *used* to be called Sanfyrd Montop. You can still complete the quest using him.
Just FYI, he has a quest relating to his hair, also ;)
getting faction to do this quest

To do this quest, you must be 'amiable' to Manik Compolten and the rest of the Gemchoppers for him to give you the cards, and 'indifferent' to the clockworks who are on King Ak'anon faction (I believe). Otherwise, you will not be able to get the note to spawn Duster X.

There are several ways to build faction depending on level, patience, and possibilities of other loot. For the short, melee/priest types, the Red V quest in the mines is a good one because you have the possibility of receiving the Bullsmasher. But this can be a very tedious camp, and the nice 1HB weapon is a rare reward. Still, you can get experience up to level 8 doing this quest (maybe even beyond).

For those who are of a higher level, do not care about the Bullsmasher, or simplpy cannot fit into the gnome mines, the next option is hunting the clockworks in Steamfront, and turning in the rusted blackboxes to Manik Compolten (2 at a time), and the metal scraps (4 at a time) to Sanfyrd. Both quests raise the Gemchoppers and King Ak'anon factions, and hunting clockworks is a good deal for those rangers/fletchers who want to make the Trueshot bow. Low level clockworks (lvl 6-8?) roam around the windmills, while the higher level clockworks (lvl 9-12?) are closer to the minotaur mines.

Did this last night with my elf ranger, spending the better part of levels 12-13 looking for clockworks (along with lots of other rangers). Harpys also drop decent loot, and elementals drop components for cultural smithing tempers (rarely).

One other note on this quest -- before turning in the note from Jogl to get Duster X to spawn, make sure no one is 'camping' the spawn point. Every now and then I see someone hanging out down there, perhaps thinking that it is a random spawn. Once I turned the note in without checking, and some guy killed Duster and looted the metal with no intention of doing the quest (so he said). I usually do this stage of the quest early morning when no one else is in the zone.
Is quest broken?

Has anyone gotten the Series C quest to trigger the Duster quest. Used to be that I always got the duster quest when I turned in my daily log, and never the red V quest, but for the past month, I've only gotten the red V quest.

On Zebuxoruk server.

First of all make sure when you do the quest that you have an open inventory slot for the bag to drop into, I always leave the number 1 slot open. OK here goes:(sorry for the length)

You get the shiny cards that you'll be giving to the "C" clockworks (metal spiders)from Manik Compolten(Gnome in full plate mail in the gemchoppers guild) Loc p898/n457 by hailing him and saying "I am a new warrior". Each time you give one of the shiny cards you must return to Manik to get another card until you have all four metal boxes (that the clockworks will give you).

Location of the "C" clockworks:
I found that by doing it in the following order the two moving ones almost always spawned in the right places for me.
1) XXVIC King Akanon Throne Room Loc p754/n159
To get to throne room from the gemchopper guild go to main corridor from th gemchopper guild and turn left and go short distance to ramp on right follow that a short ways and hop over railing on right to get to walkway that goes out over the water. Go along walkway a short ways and take first left stairs down to palace, go through the 2 doors to the room with the four-way in it, take the left door(east) go straight to next door go down the stairs and through the door and take a right through the opening into the room with the 2 clockworks...give shiny card to XXVIIC for your first box. One done! WTG! (the rest are very easy to find).Time to get your next shiny card from Manik.

2)XVIIC (varies)I found this one to move around a lot but when done after the throne room to always be on the guard ramparts when you first enter the city. Loc p238/p20 (on the top at the far end hiding behind the light post and barrels). If it's not there then it's likely at the mine entrance Loc p2034/n355 Check in the mines if you can't find him.

3)XIIC Water Platform Loc p1311/n384

4)XXVIIC (varies)This one hopefully will be at the end of the lower tunnel. Loc p1793/n387 if not you could have to look around a bit, I found him at mine entrance, ramparts(changes spots with other clockwork), paddlewheel room, inside mines...and more.

You should now have 4 metal boxes which you will give to Manik and he will give you a note to take out to Jogl Doobraugh (Gnome in black platemail)at the windmills outside of the city. Loc n151/n517 He's usually wandering around on that little hill but can be inside the windmills or wandering nearby too. He's known to be elusive and some evil types like to kill him too so he can be tough to find. I found that he seemed to spawn in the mornings between 6am and 11am,always on a saturday but that is probably coincidence, I've never seen anyone else notice that and I never bothered to test it. Jogl gives you a note to take to Drekon Vebnebber (next room down the hall from Manik).***note*** before giving the note to Drekon be ready to move fast and know where your running to!

Giving the note to Drekon will set into motion one of two possible quests, the Duster V quest or the Red V Quest (which is another quest). If it's the Duster Quest immediately RUN to the bridge that takes you to the mechanic and Rylin Coil, Duster X looks like a steel rat and seems to spawn at the wagon just over the bridge p1672/n327 or somewhere close to there. It's either still crossing or just about to cross the bridge if I run there with no sow or any other haste enhancements, for those that can gate make that your bind spot, it would be well worthwhile. If you miss it then it will despawn shortly after and you'll have to start all over again.
Now you can get Duster V at your leisure as it's always running about and if you kept an eye out for it when you were dealing with the clockworks you'll probably already have killed it. If not, the easiest way I found was to wait for it near the POD on the path to the fish merchant. The dusters path takes it to the fish merchant so I would ambush it after it passed me so it couldn't escape except by going past me.

Once you've killed them both you take the two Dusters metal remains to Sanfryd Featherhead who will finally give you your reward, usually the backpack. Sanfryd is just across from the mine entrance on a piece of land you have to swim to. Loc p2019/n246

One more thing to note, don't confuse the DUSTERS X and V with the CLEANERS X and V, attacking the the cleaners will bring all within a large agro radius on your head.

Don't forget about that open slot for the backpack, I can speak from experience it sucks to go through all that and not get the backpack because you forgot.

Hope that was helpful, it's a great quest that once you know what to do gives you a nice weight reducing backpack in about 15-20 minutes.

Good Luck!

Good Walkthrough! I used last night to get my pack. THanks a lot it helped a lot. And yes, The quest is still in action, at least on Firiona Vie.

ONe word of warning though: If you are playing in FV server, remember that the Trivial Loot Code is active everywhere. And the Scraps for the dusters is subject to it. I got lucky in that my Duster X was not trivial and I got that, but I lost my first Duster V to the Trivial. For the second I got a newbie that was passing by to kill it for me and that got it for me.
Kind of a walk-through for you.

# Jun 27 2001 at 3:21 AM Rating: Default
Great quest for those who don't want to shell out ridiculous prices for the 10 slot bp (sorry tailors). You don't need any fancy footwork -- simple running is just fine to find the Dusters, but a little offesnive magic is always helpful once they realize they've lost and start running away from you (also good to attract their attention from a distance).

I prefer doing this in the quiet time when no one else is in Ak'anon (most of the time on M. Marr server) so that no one else 'happens' upon Duster X while I am running down there to whack him. On several occasions, I've come across him wandering around with no one else in the city, thinking I happened upon a ranodm spawn, only to have some newbie rush up after I have dispatched him complaining that s/he had been killed in the process of doing the quest. Being a considerate (albeit uncharismatic) gnome, I generally let them have the loot -- but no more.

Make sure you are at the right lvl to do this. It is easy for my lvl 7 cleric, but I died too when I was younger while others around laughed at me and scooped up the leftovers. There is a reason that this is a difficult quest -- if it was that easy, our city of little people would be overrun with giant hoardes. Duster V is doable at 4 or 5, but X will knck you around considerably -- I have good armour, and still lose half my HP at lvl 7.

Red V quest is a good way to work up to this one, and the 'Cleaner VII' quest in Kaladim is a cinch after chasing clockworks in Ak'anon.
Shiny Cards

Someone mentioned shiny cards. I found one on a guard's corpse that was out in the Steamfont. What's the quest for it, I can't find one.
RE: Shiny Cards
# May 11 2001 at 1:01 PM Rating: Decent
They are for the "Series C Black Boxes" quest listed here. It starts with Manik Compolten in the gemchoppers hall. Remember to just head straight for a clockwork with "C" in it's name and give it to it if you already have a shiny card. These are LORE items and Manik gives you one each time you goto him so it saves a wasted trip.
Faction a coincidence?
# Apr 08 2001 at 1:59 PM Rating: Default
First of all when I tried to do this quest, someone had gotten Clockwork XXVIIC to disappear. Maybe they killed him, who knows. Searched for hours, and he wasn't anywhere. So, gave up until the server (Veeshan) got re-set. I went on, and he was in his spot where he was supposed to be. Did all the rest, and got the Red 5 scroll. Gave up. Next day tried again and no problems finding the Clockworks, but got the Red 5 scroll 4 times altogether before I figured - I wonder if faction makes a difference. I was apprehensive to Jogl. I haven't done anything to be disliked, but who knows. So, I snuck up to him and con'd him - indifferent. Then I gave him the required item(s) and voila - the Duster report. So, I ran back to Ak'Anon (rogues can't gate) and found the dusters that I needed (note: Duster X is on serious speed), and proceeded to get my pack. Just thought it might be more than a coincidence, who knows.
Duster models
# Mar 02 2001 at 8:06 AM Rating: Decent
Duster V is a very common spawn. It's usually around the waterfall at entance to Ak'Anon and runs around there.
Duster X will only spawn once you turn in the note from Jogl. When you turn in the note hurry down to the watermill and wait for duster X to spawn. It will spawn a minute or two after you turn in the note.
Very easy. Very good award
If the bag could be sold it would probably be worth 150pp or so since it's a 10 slot container(120pp) and has weight reduction.

How to find the Dusters
# Oct 10 2000 at 9:02 AM Rating: Default
Duster V is easily found as he is running between the PoD and the Warrior guild. sit between the two and wait. Actually, stand, he is fast.\

Duster X is spawned by turning in the note. I always go to the place by the ramp to the mines of malfunction. He will run by there and there are no Guides to 'help'.
Nice pack, easy to get

I did this quest in about 40 minutes, only because I had to wait for Jogl to pop up. The quest description is right on about binding near the mechanic. I received the pack the first time and after dropping an 11.5 pound Avenger battle into it, noticed 1 pound of encumbrance vanish! So the pack also appears to be 10% weight reduction in addition to 10 slot, really cool perk :-) Try an object 10 pounds or more to see the weight drop.
Clarification
# Aug 24 2000 at 11:17 AM Rating: Decent
The quest is actually started by Manik Compolten in the warrior guild, called Gemchoppers Hall. He will not give the quest, if faction is too low. So first you may have to raise faction. This can be done by hunting clockwork rogues and returning the desired parts to him, or by fighting minos. Aqua Goblins in Cauldron did not work, those in Butcherblock yes, but they are few. Once faction is ok and you say hail and I am a new warrior, he will give a shiny card. Only then the XXXVII C Blackbox quest can be done. A dirty way is ( not for roleplayers I guess ) to use shiny cards from Gnome guards, which will not be used by the guardkillers. That´s a way to further build faction also. The next thing after finishing the blackboxes is to find Jogl at the mills. One way is to do it with two guys, bind there chech back once in a while and if he is there, try to keep him there until boxes are delivered. The item he gives is not one of the mentioned reports but a daily log. This is to be given to Drekon, who will then just mention Dusters or Red V.

There is a possible shortcut though. Duster V spawns every now and then and has his walk between reception and near POD. so just don´t care about the rest just get him and then camp near the paddle wheel for Duster X. We got 2 spawns maybe just luck. The thing is, without working on faction Sanfyrd, if you mention Duster models will ask to destroy the dusters and bring their parts. He seems to accepting the quest items and give the reward without any faction consideration. So just get the two dusters and turn in the scrap metal they drop to him.
I love the pack!
# Aug 23 2000 at 12:27 PM Rating: Default
This quest is excellent and the bagpack is a great reward for it. It would be worth for every class to raise their Ak' Anon faction high enough to be able to do the quest.

The description posted here is very accurate and I had no problems solving the quest with it.

It is indeed essential to bind at the mechanic and gate there immediately upon handing in the report. Duster X is fast, by the time I had gated there it was already running along the path, so you will have to be quick. It conned 'threateningly' to me and actually resisted my lvl 30 nuke the first time.

I had to wait approximately 15 minutes for Duster V. At least I found a use for the Sentinel spell in this quest. I cast the spell onto the bridge near the receptionist while I waited on the path near the PoD. The Duster indeed triggered the Sentinel, so I waited for it to come. It is probably best to take it out close to the PoD area since the path isn't so narrow there, and no Guide is too close. It conned 'dubious' to me and didn't resist any spells.
