In the Halas bank on the second floor, you will find Cappi McTarnigal. Hail him and he will ask if you are a member of the white rose. When you tell him you are he asks you for mammoth calf hides but at the same time his fellow trainer, Ysanna Macgibbon, mentions gnoll fur.

You will need to be indifferent to both Cappi and Ysanna in order to do this quest:

    You say, 'Hail, Cappi McTarnigal'

Cappi McTarnigal says 'Hail there, ____! If you are not a [member of the White Rose], then it be best that you stay on the lower level. This here floor is for honest ...ermm respectable rogues only.'

You say, 'member of the White Rose'

Cappi McTarnigal says 'I hope that you are indeed respectable, and loyal to Halas and the Rogues of the White Rose. To do otherwise would bring the wrath of the Six Hammers down on you. But enough with talk! Our caravan to the frigid north leaves in less than two days, and we are short on mammoth calf hides. Return four of them and you will be given items that show your loyalty to our Clan.'

Ysanna MacGibbon says 'The mammoth calf hides are used to shield our beasts of burden from the icy wind. You are probably now asking what shields us Northmen from that same icy wind eh? Well, along with many other furs and leathers, we have come to find that [gnoll fur] of all things is a good insulator against the cold. Look at their tiny bodies and it's obvious their fur does something good.'

Now move to target Ysanna before continuing

    You say, 'gnoll fur'

Ysanna MacGibbon says 'You should not be asking where or what a gnoll is, but asking how I make use of that patch fur I find on their corpse. It is quite simple, take four pieces of gnoll fur and sew them together. Take the result and sew four of them together. And again with that product. In the end you will have a bundle of tailored gnoll fur. You can either return it to me or keep it for yourself.'

    Trivials:

    Gnoll Fur Patch 21
    Gnoll Fur Patch Quarter 26
    Patched Gnoll Fur Bundle 31

Give Ysanna the Patched Gnoll Fur Bundle.

Ysanna MacGibbon says 'You have done well. Here is a small reward for your effort.'

The description of this is extremely confusing as there are many things being talked about at once. Let's focus on just the Gnoll Fur quest

    Gnoll Fur Patch 21
    Gnoll Fur Patch Quarter 26
    Patched Gnoll Fur Bundle 31

Yes you can get skill ups - Yes combines can fail even at the patch level

    Fur Patches
    # Nov 05 2002 at 4:58 PM Rating: Decent
For those interested in doing this quest, check around with the merchants in Halas and in Qeynos. You can buy fur patches cheap and (I found) in quantities all around Blackburrow. Most people don't know about the quest and just sell them back to the vendors. I picked up 3-4 stacks like this last night and finished the quest. Nice little piercer for a newbie Shaman.

Skill check for the basic patch combining is trivial at around 20, but I still failed about 15% of the time at 27 tailoring. I never failed a check to combine Gnoll Fur Patch (4 Patches) into a Gnoll Fur Quarter. However when I went to combine the final result, I lacked the skill. I am SO not killing 300+ gnolls again to get all those patches :(.

Make sure they aren't stacked, as then it will not combine.

My answer: DON'T BOTHER! This quest is pointless. There are better cloaks out there and with a little auctioning, you can find a better piercer. If you actually received skill increases from this quest, then it would be better. I am a tailor and at 26, I didn't get skill increases for the patch or quarter and considering that I may or may not get one for the final product, I have given up.

This is a great quest to raise faction with the Halas Rouge folk (which inccidently the halas banker is on also..) Incase you want to do the Lanseax (of the Wolves) quest a few times do this quest FIRST as the Langseax (of the Wolves) will lower your Halas Rouge faction & after enough times you won't be able to bank there anymore as I understand it.
RE: How do you do it?!?
    # Jun 14 2002 at 7:38 AM Rating: Decent
Make sure you have 4 of them, and they are all the same type. The ones that stack together are the same type. Need to start with 4 "patch of gnoll fur", then they make "gnoll fur patch", 4 of them make a "bundle of gnoll fur", and 4 of them make the cloak. Total of 64 (without misses) to make a cloak. A high tailor skill will help lower the misses. (hope this helps)

I am a Dark elf enchanter, and have a tailoring skill of 94. I have made and turned in about 21 of these so far. At first, they scowled at me, indiff in illusion. After just 1 turn in, they went to threatening, looked good. Then I have turned in 10 more, and illusion went to amiable, looking better. Then turned in 10 more, hmm still threatening. So far I have turned in 21 and was wondering how many I would need to get to dubious. Any one know?

    # Feb 28 2002 at 7:22 PM Rating: Default
Hey, guess what I found! There is a certain procedure to putting the furs in that will increase your odds of getting a result. The key is all in the old adage "When in Rome, do as the Romans." The computer places items in your inventory slots a specific way, the key is to mimic it. Place four furs in the top left slot in the kit and then move three to the slot immediatly beneath it. Next move two to the top right slot and the last to the one beneath that one. Never place them in clockwise, although sometimes counter-clockwise will work; but always start with the top left corner.

Call me superstitious but so far I get no more XP from making patches.

P.S. I also seek the answer to the question posed in the previous post, so please reply.

i seriously doubt that this theory holds true. As a programer i would first make sure all your items can make something, then lookup the success formula for the item, plug in your current values and compute. Finally, compare that with a random number. I don't think the slot sequence member.

But...i may be wrong. Who knows.

Does the game let you complete the quest if you can't use the weapon? I'm a level 8 enchanter and a level 20 Tailor. Why is it that I don't get experience for making gnoll fur patches, I can fashion the quarters almost every time, and yet every time I try for the final product, It blows up in my face. When I did it with a barbarian shamen on a different server, I got it on the first try and it only took 132 patches of gnoll fur. As of so far, I've use at least a good five hundred of them and haven't gotten one

    # Feb 12 2002 at 11:40 AM Rating: Default
Next to Mac's Kilts (on the right of the door when facing it) in the merchant area of Halas, there is a huge white loom. It sort of looks like the thing Cindl is standing next to inside of Mac's Kilt but it doesn't have the plaid thing on it. If you click on the feet that hold it up, it will open up as a sewing kit with, I believe, 10 slots. Put four furs in there at a time and combine.

Last I knew, combining gnoll furs was fail safe and raised your tailoring skill as you do it. There's no reason not to do this quest.

I'm kinda new to tailoring...I'm confused how you actually sew the furs. Do you have to just combine them in a sewing kit? Do you have to use a certain size sewing kit? Or is there some other way that you're supposed to do it...

#Anonymous, Posted: Oct 21 2001 at 12:38 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Well, at about 1:15 AM eastern time on the Firiona Vie server I tried to complete this quest. After 3 days I finally had all four quarters made from the gnoll patches and when I clicked combine....the final one failed. With a 37 tailoring skill. Have to start all over. In all honesty, neither the cloak or the dagger you can get from this is worth what you have to do.

An update: the plan worked: I dinged 9 just a couple of hours after I finished the bundle. I had some good luck; I probably only lost a total of one patch quarter, maybe less. The Fang of the Wolf is only a mediocre piercer, but it was a good way to spend time while I rested up between bouts of "Whack-a-Gnoll." Now I have reached level 10 and am going into the Burrows to hunt higher gnolls. So i probably will be getting lots more fur. Next bundle I make I will keep for a cloak. Have fun, and may the Tribunal judge you worthy.

This is a lowbie Shaman's guide to getting to level 9 (not there yet, but soon), working on your tailoring and meditation skills, getting the Fang and making some cash by mugging Gnolls. When I reached 7 I decided to make a run to Qeynos to get snake scales for Snake Skin. Going through the burrows I noticed how the Gnoll guards were set up. I decided to go back and camp the entrance from Everfrost. Here is what to do. When you get to the entrance, there is a guard on each side. I always whack the blue one, because the green one seldom aggros. Then get the other one. There is a left turn with a lamp just past. That is my base to camp. I back up into the corner so I can see the entrance and so I can't be taken from behind. Then I sit and build my manna for the next spawn. When they do, I can see them from behind, and can sit all day if I need to. I hit each one with Frost Rift to pull them and hurt them. Then I whack until they are gone. Then I rest up for the next one. Down the tunnel at a left hand turn there is another guard. I go and whack him. Then further down the tunnel behind a rock outcropping I whack the fourth guard. Then I go back to my camp and start all over again. While resting, I make gnoll fur patch quarters (I currently have 3). When I get encumbered I Gate back to Halas and sell and give gnoll teeth to Lysbith for that quest and do my banking. Sometimes I go over to Cindl and buy patterns to sew items. Then I run back to the burrows, bagging the occasional bear on the way to have pelts to sew. If I get really bored I dash through the burrows and into Qeynos to get more snake scales. So, there you have it. After a few hours of this I have gone from 7 to halfway to 9 (And SoW!!!), have increased my magic, combat, meditation, tailoring skills. I can also say I am guarding the entrance to the burrows. I have even given lots of stuff away to people running to the burrows to get their corpses. See you down there!

every other vendor in qeynos seems to sell these gnoll furs.. i was just wanting to make something while i camped pyzjn, so I would kill the gnolls in the day, and I eventually made the cloak.. I am lucky my 4 quarters didn't fail, because that would have been 64 furs.

I read on an earlier post that the vendor in QH had some but he only sold 3 furs :P

Can you tell me which vendors in Qeynos that sells teh furs? Cause then I would love to buy those 80 furs and start on my cloak and weapon :)
    RE: thanx for the tip
    # Sep 10 2001 at 8:51 PM Rating: Default
No merchant stocks gnoll furs, the reason some sell it is because players sold furs to them and they are simply reselling the furs.
So, there really are no merchants specificaly that sell furs, you just have to check all of them until you find a merchant or two that some player sold a bunch of furs to.
    Buy them!
    # Jul 14 2001 at 11:16 AM Rating: Excellent
I was having trouble just getting the minimum 64 patches of gnoll fur from killing gnolls, so I did some shopping in Qeynos.

You can buy stacks of patches for roughly 2gp per stack. I bought about 80, since not all merchants have 20, though some have more.

I did get lucky in my combining, I had already boosted my tailoring to 21 through practice points, then after the first set of combining I was successful in making the quarters. Then I got really lucky in making the cloak.

So, I suggest you buy the patches in Qeynos rather then hunt for them. This is also a quick way if you want the cloak AND the dagger. You can just make two through buying.

I got my 4 gnoll patch quarters after collecting literally hundreds of gnoll furs. My skill level in tailoring was 26 and I failed. Needless to say I was very dissapointed. At the same time, if you are planning to stay in blackburrow for a while, I would recomend having a large tailoring kit to work on this quest. At least it gives you something to do. If I had to do it again, I would just wait until my skill was higher before completing the last part.

One other note, I had bought some fur from others for about 1SP per. Just as I failed in completeing mine I saw someone bidding 3pp for a stack of fur.

This quest does use up 64 if you don't fail any of the steps. Any step can fail but they are relatively easy items to make. I can buy about two stacks of gnoll fur per day from the merchant in the house in Qeynos Hills, so I can do this quest several times a week.

Be sure to talk to Cappi and make sure he gives the quest. Ysanna will answer 'what gnoll fur' with apprehensive faction but you can't get the dagger from her unless you're at least indifferent. Turning in the cloak to Ysanna raises RoguesoftheWhiteRose faction but only by a real small amount.
