I made a Brell rogue and sneak/hided him all the way down to him. Some mobs where still Ready To Attack but they dont attack, some kind of bug or something. Nortlav is in the Corner Right if you are facing the Door Yael spawns at.

same, there are mobs that con indif after hide/sneak, so it's working, but others con KoS but just don't attack

Doing the rogue thing you all are talking about. I went into the hole with a rogue and ran around with out hide, sneak and all i had to worrie about is the ratmen and the undead. The ratmen and undead can be gotten by with the rogue's hide sneak. All you do is target a mob that is KOS, find a corner and when no mobs are around hit sneak, once you get the responce you are sneaking then hit the hide and after you get this message you have hidded then con the KOS mob again by hitting the C key for consider. He should be indifferent. Now do not loot, attack, or right click a mob up close and you can wonder all around the zone no problems.

Summary of tactics
# May 15 2003 at 3:33 AM Rating: Excellent
We just took him down with a raid force of 10, most of us at or over 60. We had: rogue, bard, chanter, druid, cleric, shaman, sk, sk, pally, ranger. It would have been very nice to have another enchanter for runes, another healer, and another nuker; the fight was pretty close.

We tried some stuff on him first just to see what tactics to use. Attempted slowing does not give an "immune" message but his MR is so high you might as well not try. I kited him for a bit to gauge resists, got disease and cold through more than fire or poison, although poison did get through a couple of times. Fire failed every time. Then he summoned me and ate me for lunch. I was able to stay fairly well ahead of him with run 2 when not summoned.

We ended up taking him on standard melee, unslowed, with chanter chain runing and cleric chain healing. The chanter ran out of mana fairly early but we were still able to outdamage his proc. We had an SK tank; he kited him around a bit first (with rune up) to gain agro before pulling him. I was the bard and sang pretty much my standard melee set but subbed shield of songs in for one. I dunno how much that helped but hey, we won.

When he wasn't able to lifetap due to runes, his life went down quite fast. He does run when he is below 15% life.

Hope this helps!

Chain Runing
# Apr 29 2003 at 1:58 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, Stupid question, but what EXACTLY is Chain Runing, how does it work? my last attempt on Nortlav was a comlete Failure, twice. So if anybody could PLEASE tell me How many ppl i should have for Nortlav, and what i should do to kill him, would be great!!!!
RE: Chain Runing
# Apr 30 2003 at 10:08 PM Rating: Decent
Chain runing is casting runes continuosly on a single MA so that the LifeTap that Nortlav procs doesnt actually suck HPs. Otherwise all the damage you do to Nortlav is healed up some every time he taps the MA, in addition to sucking the MAs hps. Both of these things are bad. Having more than one enchanter to chain rune is good, although I dont know the mechanics of exactly how to go about this. Do the enchanters each cast a different rune, or do they just keep overwriting the old runes. Best to ask your friendly neighborhood Enchanter for the answers to that one.
Another note, when chain runing your MA, its EXTREMELY important that nobody else ganks aggro. If anyone else ganks aggro, even for one or two hits, then Nortlav may proc his LT against that aggro ganker and poof, 1500 point heal and a possible dead raider. If the MA goes down get the chain runeing started on the SA ASAP. Have a rune on him to start also. Prolly a good idea to rune anyone the first 2-3 tanks. Any more than that and you probably have more problems that just the new MA dying, hehe. Dont bother runeing with soft targets, casters will drop fast with a 1500 point LT.

Well, after some trial and error, I can outline a relatively easy way to get a force into close proximity to the epic mobs that spawn deep within the Hole without having to clear through the city (which is a complete pain in the ****** This method does work while Yael is up.

First, you need to powerlevel a brell cleric to level 14. The cleric needs the three spells divine aura, invis to undead, and reanimation, if you want to go totally barebones.

Get the cleric to paineel, bind him right at the pit that drops you into the hole. Have the cleric divine aura and dive in, he'll land in the middle of a bunch of elementals, golems, flighty fiends, and master yael (if he's up). All these mobs should ignore you since you're a brell worshiper. Run up the passage that leads to the castle full of undead and epic mobs. ITU so none of the undead will aggro, run past the entrance to the castle, around the corner, and you'll be on a ledge overlooking master yael's spawn. Park the cleric here, we'll come to him later.

Next, you'll need to have a 55+ mage in your raid party. have everyone in the raid party zone into the hole, no need to fight the entrance mobs, just sit around. Have someone duel the mage to kill him without exp loss. Now, take a level 1 brell worshiping halfling rogue, use sneak/hide and drag the mage's corpse all the way down through the city and to the spot where the level 14 cleric is parked. Have the cleric reanimate the mage, get the mage grouped with the halfling rogue, have the rogue sneak back to the entrance, or even easier make sure he's bound right outside the Hole entrance in Paineel and just have him run up to a mob and ask it for a free port to bind, any way you do it, have him in the entrance to the zone so he can invite people for Call of the Hero. CotH your entire raid party into position, assemble your groups, and presto! You're right near all the epic mobs, you're really close to master yael, and you didn't have to kill a thing. In the event that you don't have a mage that can cast Call of the Hero, it is possible to simply corpse your entire raid party and drag all their corpses through the zone. In this situation, I strongly reccomend that each person at the raid bring their own level 1 halfling rogue, because I had to drag five corpses through the Hole last night and it was not only extremely difficult (ended up making a ton of macro keys to target and summon corpses) but it also took about an hour and twenty minutes.

Hope this helps, and good luck.
(note: copies of this post will be placed in the discussion of the important epic mobs in the bestiary section, as well as under the main Hole strategy discussion. I'm not trying to spam, just trying to make it so anyone looking for info on their epic mob can find this strategy quickly and easily)

You plan works, but way too much trouble IMHO. I have a baby rogue camped down there and check to see if Yael is up. If not, we just DA jump a few in, clear the few mobs that are there. If Nortlav is there, be careful because he will assist the bad guys if close enough, otherwise he's indiff. Once LZ is clear, suicide the rest in and rez them up. Ready to raid next to all the raidable mob in 15 mins total :) If you have a 60+ bard handy, he can DA an entire group for the jump. Only problem is that at times, peeps will stack up as they zone during the fall. If that happens, move around and fall quickly or DA will wear off.
RE: Infiltrating the Hole
# Dec 30 2003 at 2:07 PM Rating: Decent
I agree using a bard and their DA song is by fair the easiest/quickest way into The Hole. I have done it three times now and Yael was never up. (I heard they removed him in the last revamp) The landing area is free of mobs as of this post. (you never know what they might change)

With raid forces you just need to set up each group with five people. The bard joins the first group, group moves to the edge and looks DOWN, bard starts singing, and then all but the bard jump. When you zone in make sure you are holding the forward key so people do not stack up or someone will die. The bard disbands and joins the next group. Repeat above until he jumps in with last group. Just hope you have a rezzer for any unfortunate folks. We have only had two deaths in my three "skydives of faith". : )

Good luck.

2 things
1st off, factions are a little different now, may want to make sure your not kos before you have an entire raid counting on it.

2nd, Isn't the rez timer for dueled corpses really short? That rogue better know the way and get there quick =)
A Gimp-and-a-half

This guy's a friggin Gimp. We took him down tonight with 15 peeps. Had one death cause I lost aggro for 5 seconds cause everyone dog piled him and the 51 warrior got lifetapped, lol. I got life tapped once, but had rune on, so we owned him. Was a sixty second fight, dropped the red dragon scales and the sword both to me. Was fun pick up raid. He's not as hard as these posts say. Only had 2 peeps post 60, the chanter and a mage. Oh, one more thing, he could indifferent to me, so what's up with this high aggro bs? Somethin I missing?

Use bards
# Feb 09 2003 at 6:57 PM Rating: Good
Is the lifetap considered melee dmg or magic? Bard has 3 rune songs at level 52, melee rune, magic rune, and combined. the right rune song will prevent the lifetap. And it is recast every 18 secs. Singing slow, rune, 30% haste, and dex song wouldn't be a problem for a half decent bard. The dex song also has a dex debuff proc on the mob, which would decrease the lifetap proc. So 50% of Nortlav's dmg capabilities removed by a single person. MA with serious taunt would be needed to keep aggro off the bard because runes cause aggro big time. If the lifetap is more frequent than every 18 secs, then drop the dex song for another hit of rune. Rune, haste, rune, slow. Thats a rune every 9 secs. And he can keep it up forever.

Looking at the raid mentioned below with 3 full groups and no bards - obviously your guild had been ******** bards over for the scales. Otherwise you'd have a bard with you when going after a bard epic mob. You didn't understand or value the class and so your raid force sucks. A single mid 50 group with a bard would have zero problem with this mob.

Unexpected Agro

Before your raid, inform everyone to stay FAR away from this guy, until everyone is set up, and you are ready for the MA to attack him. You will find him in the pit, with the waterfall. EVEN though he cons indifferent to everyone! We came in, saw him, coned him, and basically relaxed too much. I still do not know exactly what happened, but we were buffing up apx 50 feet from him, and all of a sudden he came at us and killed 2 and a half groups of 50 plus. We had 3 high level clerics, good tanks, a chanter or two. The main thing I learned from all this... Stay far away from him, and the Winged Firery Something that floats around near him, until you are ready and announce Killing him in 30 seconds - or something so everyone is ready.

Almost everything is non Kos to a Brell worshipper(assuming you havent killed anything in zone) and those that arent dont see invis and can be avoided using hide sneak... just dont go up and poke Master Yael I'm pretty sure he's sees invis AND I know for a fact he's kos to all.

I keep a level 9 dwarf rogue that worships brell parked there for CR and to check spawns.

Nortlav does agro if you are fighting a mob near him. He is indiff to all you are correct, but he likes to assist the mobs around him. It's no bug SOE wants it that way. :)

I don't know if there was a bug then, or if some1 on your raid did something he wasn't meant to, but i just went up to him, no invis or anything, con'd Indiff, and didn't agro.

Not sure if it was that i was a lvl 1 brell Halfling Rogue.

How to take him
# Oct 12 2002 at 12:54 PM Rating: Decent
He has a proc on his weapon that does a 1500 point Lifetap. Each time he gets a lifetap off, he gets healed. He can proc twice a round at least if not more.

You have to do him like you do VS. You have to keep the MA chain Runed. Use Rune 5. You will need several chanters to do it. Rune is a HIGH agro just like a cleric's CH. The longer the battle takes, the more enchanters you will need chain Runeing. If you don't have enough, they will run OOM and he will start getting procs off and heal every bit of damage you have done so far.

Again, this is a 1500 Lifetap proc from his weapon. He can proc a LOT. RUNE stops the proc.

# May 15 2002 at 9:51 AM Rating: Good
Well, 3 groups of 50+ went down to see him last night, and he was in the tunnel to left of pool after you drop off that tall cliff ( was a suprise to us too). As we were killing the yard trash, one wandered semi close to him. He WILL ASIST the mobs there that are not undead, and will lifetap 1500 points to whomever has the mobs agro, plus smack you with that huge blade of his. Nobody in raid attacked him, casted AE, or had any pets to agro him, he just assisted the mobs. Just as a warning for whomever else happens to find him other then at his spawn spot. ( yes, even our clerics we unable to camp out before the total wipe, and was a loooooong CR )
RE: Warning
# Jan 12 2003 at 2:10 PM Rating: Decent
If you get wiped to ease the pain of a CR just get your pallys and necros to cast their invunerability spell and jump down from paineel. they should survive the fall. Then they can rez and the necros can kill any repops. From there its up to you wich order you rez people and such. You can also use this technique to get real deep in the hole real quick. Just send the necros and pallys down. Then drop a CotH mage after em. Rez the mage, and start CotH people from the main entrance.

P.S , that 1500 lifetap is not like an HT, only one per fight, he hit each of us with it as he agro'd us
RE: Warning
# Jul 05 2002 at 7:19 PM Rating: Good
Agreed on the warning, this guy is no walk in the park. He double lifetapped over five members of our group (I know we had a complete wipe out, not sure how many we actually had there). I know he landed at least ten lifetaps over the course of 30-45 seconds because our rouge went down, main tank, secondary tank, third tank, and a ranger in that time period and all were saying that they got doubled for 1500. His sword isn't that bad, he was hitting for about 100-200 and might have been doubling, but that unlimited supply of HT just wiped us out.

I'm curious as to the best way to take this guy down. One of my friends has suggested chain runing the MA my thoughts were to have a few wizards using mana burn off the bat. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

He hits hard to, I was afk while our raid was going down deeper into the hole, we got attacked by pops and he aggroed us. When I came back from afk I was of course dead and scrolled up to see how hard he hit. Each hit was for 200-235pts. I didn't see him lifetap me though. I was buffed to with about 1180ac and about 4khps. There were other mobs on me also. Figure he's just as tough as Venril Sathir. If I'm not mistaken you need high saves on disease to resist lifetap more. One day I will MT both VS and this guy and live to tell the tail :) And woot, allmost 100 posts :)
Rumor
# May 09 2002 at 11:35 AM Rating: Decent
About the rumor that this guy is a merchant much like Ragefire in Solb only he sells scales. It seems a little farfetched to me but does anyone know if this is true? If so that would make it still take some work but might be worth making a halfling rogue to try and get there or maybe take a raid there to try and get some scales for guildmates.
answer
# May 19 2002 at 5:10 AM Rating: Decent
You could easily answer this.
Make a halfling rogue brell worshiper and hide/sneak all the way to him.
Then from behind him simply atempt to open a the vendor trade window with sneak on.
(safe here to drop hide)
=)
I had a such a char down there for a raid, but never clicked on him.
Btw he is indif until he assists a mob that is agroed.

RE: Does he drop White scale

Although it is listed here as loot, I don't think the white dragon scale ever drops off the ScaleMaster anymore.

I've asked people who have killed him and they have never seen it, and I checked eqdiva.com and they do not list him as a source of the white scale.

Gorenaire is the other source of the white scale, once a bard levels past 52 and can no longer kill Vox.
killable but hard

couple of our guilds on fennin have killed him that i know of, hes not that hard and has low hps, they use the normal vs tactic although this guy procs 1500 lifetap alot more. With manaburn wizzies a wizzie could prolyl solo this guy with a crit, what do i suggest either use vs tactic or time it so all your wizzies nuke/burn same time. Ive tried this guy one time. We had about 24 and it was a joke we died so fast it wasnt funny. The runing enchanter got aggroed cause he didnt like runes and bam 1500 lifetaps to everyone. so you need yo try to do about 15k dmg in 1-2 secs which nowadays isnt impossible its easy :)

Have never seen him drop any scale other than a red one. You can take him down with 3-4 groups (2 if you have level 58+ and a kick butt tank.) Nice source for the red scale w/o having to rely on a Naggy raid or waiting for Ragefire. Few want to have to take the time to get down to the bottom of the Hole, however. Tis a shame. It's a beautiful zone.

My Guild raid ran into this Guy last night, deep into the Hole. We had 4 groups of 50-60.He conned indif at first. Suddenly a mob had either spawned behind me or wandered by, and Ol Nortlav assisted the Mob. Killed me with 2 hitts close to 300 and a proc lifetap for 1500hp.
Before I finished zoning back to Bind spot Nortlav had already whiped most of my unsuspecting raid party out. *sighs* Just a warning to everyone. If Nortlav sees a mob attack you. You and your Party will be whiped out.

Just stating the facts,of what happend. We will have to preplan a raid just for this guy.
