A friend and I camped the room with 2 of these bad boys in it, since I was unwilling to try the more populated room (were are both 29th lvl, a nec and wiz) and we saw 3 pieces of gnome skin in close to 6 hours.

Sounds like a Shadowbone Earring. Nice little item for Hybrid, like an SK or Pally, etc.

#Anonymous, Posted: May 16 2002 at 9:09 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Are we all talking about the same mob? I solo here in 37, and don't have any kinds of problems with these crapheads, even if Instrument of Nife doesn't Proc. Are u all weak or am i just so good?

As a paladin in my mid 30s, I was finished with my undead stint in Unrest, and so I figured it was time to move up to some more undead areas. I went into the Tower of Frozen Shadow and explored a little on the ground floor. The two spectre-like guys (lesser ice shades) were total cake and gave good experience. However, their spawn time was slow, so I went peaking around some more targets.

I took a right to reach the room in the southeast corner of the floor where I found two Shadow Beasts. One was green and the other was light blue, and since they were lower than the lesser ice shades, I figured they'd be cake too. I was quite wrong. They hit me very hard for such low creatures, so I decided it was time to use fear undead. They both ran out towards the entrance and kind of "ran in place" against the wall at the entrance until the fear wore off. My undead procs (Ghoulbane and Instrument of Nife) weren't triggering like I needed, and soon I had to make a break for it. I clicked the entrance/exit portal and just barely made it out. A green and a light blue almost killed me at level 37.

Moral of the story:
These guys are undercons.
How often
# Apr 22 2002 at 8:46 AM Rating: Default
How often does a gnome skin piece drop off one of these buggers. Also, do you think a level 45 Ranger could solo the ones on the first or second floor?

Troops of Doom live on...
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 12 2002 at 6:09 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I keep hearing all over these Boards about "underconned" MOBs... hello? The "con" only tells you the LEVEL of the monster, not how much DAMAGE it can do or how many HIT POINTS it has.
The Undercon Term

"Underconned" is just a quick way to summarize that they are tougher than average. It's just faster than going into specific details about how many hit points they had compared to their level, how high their magic resists are compared to their level, or how hard they hit compared to their level, etc. It's not a complaint that their level is too low, but rather a warning to prepare those who plan to fight them.
Solo

What lvl can a ranger solo this
RE: Solo
# Apr 03 2002 at 9:55 AM Rating: Decent
Well me 37 druid and 47 mage friend with fire pet have no problems taking on 3 of these guys. I heal mages pet while mage nukes and dots. Of course i would wait till high 30's or low 40's before trying to solo anything above 1st floor. Just my experience.
Floor
# Jan 21 2002 at 12:02 PM Rating: Decent
Can anyone tell me what floor these guys are on?
RE: Floor
# Apr 03 2002 at 10:12 AM Rating: Decent
Level 37 druid and I'm pretty sure these are the cooks on the 3rd floor. If they are the cooks, then there are 3 spawns in one room. They have high resists to my highest root spell and my fury of air. Only reliable way to get these spells to land is to get the mobs debuffed such as a mages malisement. Be careful of an armor shadow who roams this floor and sometimes parks his butt at the back of this room with the 3 cooks. Good exp off these kills and decent loot. Gnome skin and various weapons all sell well.

How much hp
# Dec 23 2001 at 4:26 PM Rating: Default
How many hit points does this guy have, he can't have that many considering hes in he 20's, anyways think a 40 druid UNTWINKED could solo this guy?
#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 08 2001 at 6:22 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) these are really really easy! my lvl 45 druid pops snare root drifting death on it and imolate and it is dead if not hey just root again once more and should be dead. Personally soloed several with no more than 1m.

Shadowbone Earing
# Jul 18 2001 at 1:05 AM Rating: Default
One of these babies dropped a shadowbone earing earlier today on a gnome skin run. The thing is 4agi 2int earing all all, not too bad for monk or caster but wish it had some ac.

they seem to drop shadowbone spears as well as the rest of the items listed as shadowbone loot also, shrug.

"a shadow beast" and "a large undead gnoll"
# Jun 04 2001 at 11:34 PM Rating: Default
"a shadow beast"
Drops everything listed here AND items from the shadowbone skeleton drop table (I've had him drop a shadowbone spear and shadowbone earring). As far as Gnome skin, the Cap seems to be common (I've gotten three Caps, one Bracer, one Boots, and one Gloves so far). *Rarely* when killed will spawn "a large undead gnoll" -- I've had it happen twice. The gnoll will pop right on top of the shadow beast's corpse (a la black reaver).

"a large undead gnoll"
Drops the key to the second floor (mirror on the RIGHT, not left >_<). Shaman, will summon pet (although if he spawned from a shadow beast he will not -- instead he will immediately proceed to beat your brains out) and buff himself, pet, and anything else on the first floor. Although he can sometimes spawn after killing "a shadow beast" (any of them), he can also spawn as a PH for shadowbone skeletons (never seen him as a PH for the lesser ice shades).
#REDACTED, Posted: May 11 2001 at 12:48 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) today i went wit my lvl 30 friend... he is a warrior... he had S*X with this thing granted he was buffed and a bit of a twink but this thing did half a bub of dmg to him... no heals from me no assistance from the dog... it was a short fight also. maybe he has been nerfed? but i dont know all i know is he is easy sheezy
Not monster
# Apr 25 2001 at 12:35 PM Rating: Decent
This not a monster type creature. My Dismiss undead spell worked on it for full damage. And that spell only works on undead.

1. Sneak up behind Mister Shadow Beast.
2. Whisper sweet nothings into Mister Shadow Beast's ears.
3. Blindfold Mister Shadow Beast.
4. Tickle Mister Shadow Beast's nose.
5. Give Mister Shadow Beast a Crystalized Milkbone.
6. Beat the life out of Mister Shadow Beast.
7. Loot.

VERY underconned
# Feb 24 2001 at 5:56 PM Rating: Default
These are huge unddercons. Smacks for dual 70 and gives no exp past lv 36. Beat up upon my friends lv 36 ranger and took a huge chunk out of my lv 32 war. Almost killed our lv 38 wiz. As the youngest in the group I alone got xp. Everything one this damn isle is an undercon. Beware of these beasties as you move up to the safer second lv of the tower atleast the undead seem to KNOW what lv they are.

Actually, everything in Velious is an undercon. Also, these often hit for 80+ and sometimes double attack. They are undead though, so bring a Necro or/and a Paladin and you will kill them farely easily.

Too Hard
# Feb 16 2001 at 7:01 AM Rating: Default
Man ! They con high green to a 31 warrior and still hit for 75 !!
They are harder than cougar near igloo village, how am i supposed to take them down ?
Tough indeed
# Feb 02 2001 at 12:05 PM Rating: Default
Two of these guys can almost take down a 49 necro pet.

First time i was here i let my pet tank 2 of them and when i targetted him after he was on about 15% health

Way too tough for their level
Underconned?
# Jan 22 2001 at 7:46 PM Rating: Default
Okay, I have a few questions for those who think these guys are really tough.

1) Paladin... did you use proper soloing tactics? I.e. Stun, Root, step back and heal yourself, move in again? My level 30 Paladin can solo hillocks with this tactic and a 2h-practice sword to give her a damage shield.

2) How is their magic resistance? Do they always or almost always take full damage from nukes? Are some better than others? (Fire seems to work better in Velious, but you'd expect that.)
