These things as have been stated are a major undercon. Best way I've found to deal with them is pull them to the geonids and let them fight them. Then beat on the injured geonid after it has killed the goos.
Was soloing as a 47 monk killing raptors and thought I'd check out the caves. Got jumped at the entrance by two tar goos and the con'd green. Kicked my but though and I can handle two dk blue raptors. Had to feign death and they still were at my 'corpse' 5 minutes later. Fired up jboots and outran them to Skyfire zone. They certainly are not worth the trouble.
My 40 bard and her 49 ranger partner had a pretty good system going for taking these out. The ranger would pull one in, snared and dotted, then he'd root it when it got out of the cave. We were near the wall, to the left of the cave entrance and we had no problem with adds at all. When the goo was rooted, the ranger dotted and shot it full of arrows, while i twisted haste, katta's dex, chant of flame and amp with my drum equipped. Keeping it snared as well as rooted so we didn't get plowed over when root popped, it went very well. When the big one died, i targetted one of the little ones and charmed it while the ranger started snaring. Then we did the root dot thing again until the first little one went down, and then again to the last one. i had to run in circles a bit to get the charm off, but it wasn't too bad at all. Bottom line is: don't let them touch you :)
We found these guys have pretty high fire resist, but not nearly so high magic resist. For any bards out there, after doing 5 sets of these (big one plus the two smaller ones), chant of flame landed maybe twice, but fulfil's landed pretty much every time. Hope that helps :)
Charm one, attack another, dot the target till dead. If you're feeling ambitious, repeat, but they don't always do social aggro. Good chance of having the lil ones chase you around while your pet is getting killed by another. There is room to kite inside the cave, but the pathing prevents a neat grouping, meaning you're gonna get hit.
Big tar goos (and maybe small ones but I have seen none dropping it) now drop this Secretion. It is used in a new Skyshrine bard quest involving trade skills, resulting in instruments (drum here).
I was on the quest and decided to try soloing Tar goos. At 56 forget that. Takes hours, too many hp and even the "small ones" are green and hit for 107. Without forgetting they have tons of hp. This is insane.
Brought a level 60 druid and warrior, this was easier. But on 12 big goos (and the subsequent small ones) we got only 1 of those secretion.
oh yeah, it is no drop :/
EDIT : Geonids WILL kill steal you so pull out of their caves and without running before them. Fearie Dragons won't ks.
Do not under any circumstances underestimate these critters, 2 lvl 50 druids and a 45 pally took on one of these we had to run away after we dropped the tar goo, it spawned 2 lil ones we tried to root and dot it but they regen fast and have tons of HP.
ok ive been trying to do the mercenary quest for krofer, killed prolly 50 big tar goo and all the smaller ones on top of that and havent had not 1 strand drop, i keep getting glob of tar but it wont work in the quest he hands it back, but does anyone know if they took the strands out of game? or is there a named tar goo somewheres that drops it? Krofer askes for the remains of a tar goo. any help would be useful
Tar-goo's are actually 3 mobs in 1. Once you kill the big one (the original) after it dies it splits into 2 smaller and extremely fast lvl 25 mobs.
The big goo is tough.. and the fact that a lvl 58 Wizard will deplete his entire mana bank on killing all three mobs makes for some hard work for a really green mob.
I was a 37 sk in the day and was hanging with my 51 pally friend and we decided to hunt tiger raptors for the bracelet. We walk around and as we're walking the border of the zone, we see a tar goo, we never fought one ever. I conned it and it was green to me, and I said lets mop up that peice of crud. so we engage it and begin fighting it. For one it has a freaking ds on it that really is annoying, then I notice it's hp...After wacking it for 30 seconds I notice that the good amount of damage we're doing to it nothing. While this thing doesn't hit for all too much it's freaking DS is wearing me down like no tomorrow and it's hp is only a quarter and we're both down to half. Finally I decide to slap a fear on it and book to SS, but it is immune to fear, then I was worried so I slaped a engulf on it and thankfully that landed. after we ran from this small little spud all I can say is this. These things are one of the biggest undercons I've ever came across spare a few npcs that are insanly undercon. I pay head to engageing these things because this was green to a level 37 and the 37 and a 51 couldn't handle it at all. Then again this happened a while ago and I stumbled to this forum looking at the bestiary. I don't know if they've been patch since then because I haven't hanged out there much being the sk I am heh.
If you kill a big tar goo the ones that spawn from it will gaurd your corpse, I speak from experience. No they dont stay at the spot you spawned them because I moved from that spot. I also died a second time trying to retrieve my first corpse, they gaurded that corpse as well. Like most things in WL they will track you down from across the zone if you are on their hate list, even if you root by kael and run to SS zone with sow, they will find you. CR sucks when you dont have sow, are naked, and two mobs double hitting you for 107 each. I dont know how long the goos will gaurd your corpse or even if they will despawn after time. They stayed on my corpse for atleast an hour I am sure of. P.S Though its hard for me to believe I could swear they tracked me down even after I zoned out and back in. Maybe someone trained my same goos back on me but I didnt see anyone run past nor did the grp I was with. Messes with you psycholigicaly when stuff like that happens :)
at least didn't last night. We ended up leaving cause they hit as hard as the blue mob, have the same hitpoints, but ARE GREEN. What a waste of time. I strongely suspect the little tar goos are less than 33, while the bigger ones are the 40-44 kind. They hit for 107 max though, have a ton of hitpoints, and when I charmed one to put it on the bigger one, it was almost an even fight... *sigh* I put a msg in to EQ boards, but I doubt it'll get a response.
there are 2 distinct types of goos here. Theres the normal sizes goos (typical size of gooey things in other areas around Norrath) & a Bigger one. The Bigger one whilst not really hitting harder than the smaller ones will split into 2 smaller ones upon death & they will KoS upon popping. Sometimes though in hunting we've noticed that 1 disappears somewhere - shrugs.
