decent exp, good loot
# Dec 05 2005 at 4:16 PM Rating: Decent
If you have good CoV faction, CS is one of the best quad kiting zones I have found. The Wyvern are easy pickings. Their resist are a joke. My Druid started in CS at lv 49 and I cannot remember ever having a single resist from a wyvern. The only real danger in hunting wyvern is if Yvolcarn(named wyvern) and/or Azureake(named drake) catch you doing it. Yvolcarn cannot be snared or rooted. Azureake has decent resist and a NASTY AE. And Azureake has a rather large agro range.
I recently have been bringing my necro up there to hunt but have found that farmers now treat CS like Michael Moore at an all you can eat buffet.

Just quad seafuries, they're basically the same mob, drop regular gems instead of velious quest gems, similar cash, and are waaaaaaaaay less crowded. I think they hit a lot softer too.

As a Druid, I started hunting wyvern's when I was 49. Although, you could probably do them earlier if your CoV (Claws of Veeshan) faction is high enough. I used many different styles to kill them, all worked effectively for me.

1. DoT Kiting - This is probably the easiest way to get exp off of them, simply get up your best root spell (From Lvl's 49-55 it would be Engulfing Roots, which does 160 damage.) and root the mob.(You might wanna use Ensnare too.) Then, I would use my best DoTs that stacked. The first DoT I would use was Drifting Death,a level 44 DoT, which does about 65 damage per tick, and costs about 200 mana. The next DoT I would use would be Immolate, a level 29 DoT, which does about 24 damage per tick, lowers the mobs AC by 18, and costs only about 120 mana. From my expierence, the DoT's would wear off about every 40%, and you would have to reapply root at least once.

2. Kiting - To pull the mob I use Ensnare. After I apply snare, I then used my biggest nuke, in my case it was Starfire, which did about 612 damage. I believe it took about 15% from the wyvern.

3. Quad Kiting - Get four mobs rounded up and then try getting them into a tightly knit pack. I straifed left and right until they were all there together, which took maybe a minute or two. Then, use your biggest AoE nuke, in my case it was Fire, a AoE spell that costs about 260 mana, does about 392, and decreases their cold resistance by about 50. I believe one round of nukes brought them down 20%.

If you ever want to only pull one wyvern at a time, I suggest the Harmony of Nature spell. You get it at level 29. Don't bother with Harmony here, a message will come up saying "Your target looks uneffected." Be sure to stay away from the two nameds in this zone, Yvolcarn and Azurake, as both are immune to snare/root.

Killing regular wyverns will NOT lower your faction but, if a wyvern/drake sees you killing a wyvern/drake they WILL agro.Killing the nameds WILL lower you faction.

The regulars have very low resistances in my expierences, I don't think they have resisted me more than ten times.

Hope this helps! Happy Hunting!

Am max ally with CoV. Have also been hunting here for many months doing AA. So, I will try to give you some answers to all the questions posted below.

1. Normal mobs (wyverns / drakes) do NOT give negative hits on CoV faction. They are ON the faction for CoV, but do not give hits.

2. NAMED mobs DO give faction hits.

3. Named wyvern (Yvolcarn) is immune to speed changes. So is the Heardleader (bulthar special spawn). The named drake (Azurake) is NOT immune to speed changes, but has a higer MR than the normal drakes, since he is a higer level than they are.

4. All mobs are social, and WILL agro if you drag an agroed mob on their faction by them. But, they have a rather small agro range. So, if you are careful, you should not have major problems, except maybe with pulling wyverns past a drake. Drakes are on a set path, and if you drag near them, they WILL agro. And, they have an AoE breath weapon, that does 500pts damage.

5. MR on non-named mobs is very low. They rarely resist. MR on named mobs varies, but seem about normal.

6. Single pulls are very easy, just be careful to pull away from other mobs. Easiest way to kill here is root / dot / dot. Rinse and repeat as needed.

7. Gems that are dropped by the wyverns and drakes are posted above, except they DO NOT dropped crushed. They drop flawed, imperfect, and normal gems, along with (now) spell research components, Mithril amulets, pearl necklaces, etc.

Hope this helps you

I've seen a lot of questions about what lvl to hunt these at, so I thought I might as well add mine. I have a lvl 45 Necro with moderate Int (198), curious if I would be able to take these out one at a time now, or if I should get a few more lvls first. All help appreciated.

Bards, Necs, Druids, Wizards- the people not taking dmg are the ones who usually do these best. BLs and Mages that fight here often complain that the XP is bad an move on. Namely Wyverns hit harder and have fewer HPs for their level, at least according to most.

I am a druid and what do druids want to do at my level? We want to quad Wyverns.
So I work my butt off to get to Dubious with CoV - being on CET+1 and having problems finding groups for Kael raids, I mostly worked on faction killing giants in GD. Now, finally when I am dubious I come to CS only to find out that they changed the Wyverns and quading them is now near impossible.
I found a juicy group of dark blues and cast harmony on the middle one. Cast ensnare on the left one (I had quaded these baddies before but stopped as I was still KOS to CoV at the time and the risk was too great. Ensnare almost never got resisted) and I get the red resist message.
"Drat," thinks I and take off to gain some distance between me and the wing-flapping baddie. I cast ensnare again and again it is resisted.
"Bugger," thinks I and at this point I actually read what the red message said. "This target is immune to changes in its running speed."
As I ran for Skyshrine zone I thanked Karana that I am no longer KOS to CoV.

Now, I have not found any patch message saying "Wyverns can no longer be snared" so I wonder if this is a bug or if it is actually meant to be.

BINGO Alganon!

Droodie, you encountered Yvolcarn, who is immune to changes in run speed. Lesson for you is to check names before you engage a mob. As far as changing it....well I quad there almost every day...don't know why you would waste time with harmony, just plan your pulls right so that when you snare one, it doenst run across another to get to you. If you do happen to agro two, just run out a little and snare the second. Don't waste time or mana with harmony.

Also, if you have the resources, I would suggest getting a Luminescent staff. With KEI and my Lum staff, I can quad a set, loot, quad another set, loot, snare another set of 4 and only use my staff to kite them around, and by the time they are dead, I am up to 50% mana again and ready to quad another set.

So, did you ever look at what mob you were trying to cast your snare on? Cause I bet it was Yvolcarn, the named wyvern....

# Jul 22 2002 at 12:35 PM Rating: Decent
ok i have good ToV faction so they wont aggro, but will they help each other out when im kiting one?

BTW, quadkiters save some for me

RE: social?
# Aug 21 2002 at 3:33 PM Rating: Default
they will assist each other. this shouldnt be a problem if you are careful. drakes dont assist tho, which is good.
RE: social?
# Aug 22 2002 at 12:06 AM Rating: Decent
I beg to differ from Sariladen, but Drakes DO aggro, and they do it from great distances. Be warned and careful of their 500pt damage spells. They can take out a caster in a hurry. Be careful and have fun.

*Edit* As my druid hit 53 and these started being more light blue than dark, I noticed that the wyverns stopped agroing socially, meaning I could pull on, and walk it over another and they wouldn't agro me. I'm sure it's a level thing and not a faction thing since I've always been dubious to them. Drakes I'm not sure of because after 4 or 5 levels of quading there, I've gotten to be a master of avoiding the silly drakes and that awful AOE DD of theirs, fully self-buffed I have less than 1500 hps, goes away in a hurry with those buggers.

Hope this helps...

Does anyone have any idea what an Imperfect Diamond is used for or a price of which it may be sold. I have looked everwhere and can't find anything on them. I don't even think the are one of the normal wyvern drops, but I got one off of a wyvern. Any help appreciated.
