Snow griffin eggs
# Aug 06 2004 at 2:58 AM Rating: Decent
For those hunting griffins for the shawl, there is a spawn point at -6601, +641 (NEGATIVE 6601, POSITIVE 641.)

Spawn table is shared with a bunny, and that's as far as I know. Still camping the stupid things myself :[

Edit: a frost giant scout just popped on top of me while I was killing other mobs waiting for a pop or PH.

From my soloing experiences, I would estimate this fellow has about 5k hp, maybe a little less.

Ranger meets ranger

This creature is classed as an animal. He is vulnerable to spells affecting animals. I'm a ranger, and I know another ranger when I see one. This means he has sow, root, damage shield, and sometimes snare (snow griffons are rangers like elders, but I've only seen elder snow griffons snare).
I solo these pretty easy as a ranger, I pull from range of 200 with my bow, and run to a good pull area away from mobs, stop, turn a bit to stop forward momentum and cast snare. Once snared I cast cancel magic about 3 or 4 times, to dispell damage shield. Then I panic animal and proceed to kill him, recasting panic animal often.
He is alot tougher then the normal snow griffons, and can be fairly resistant. If snare doesn't land, I can try and fear, this sends him running at top speed, he's got sow, WOOOT =), and I run in the opposite direction as if my life depended on it, which it does, and if fear doesnt break too fast I can usually get out of aggro range and camp out and back to clear aggro.
If snow griffons are easy and you're looking for a challenge, this will challenge you. If snow griffons are a good fight that keep you on your toes, don't mess with guys.

Being a druid. This fellow was heading my way and I had NO intention to engage him. I had my charm up because the Wooly Rinos are the most disgustingly powerful pets I have ever used. Anyways, I dropped a charm on him. With that new pet buff window I see hes FULLY decked out!

Thorns, Skin, Sow .... Hes ready to rip things apart.

I believe he was red to me at the time. I sent him to kill a few things. He was scary.

All I know if when he got free his rath left me with 4% health. He was a bit angry and wanted to eat me.

Not sure if there was a patch that might have changed this, but these are not immune to panic animal and they can be snared.

ok, heres what you do. snare a wolly mammoth and the charm it. snare a esg and sick the mammoth on it. fear the griff and just watch as the mammoth takes it out rather easily. im a 45 druid and was killing esn and sg with ease. and if your like me and love exp let the esg att the mammoth a bit so u can kill the mammoth easily when charm runs out. i got almost a full yellow of 45 in a hour and a half and my 4 eggs.

It was a hell of fight, btw. I had a dire wolf add at the beggining of the fight and had to fear it during the whole fear-kite of the esg (maybe 10 minutes of fear-kite... This griffin has a massive sum of health).
I finished the fight with 40% health and 3 pixels of mana. Wew !
Snow Griff primer

There are often Snow Griffons and seldom Elder Snow Griffons near my favorite hunting ground near Sleeper's Tomb at loc N8300, P1200. There are about 3 spawn points just north of this loc, and last night while hunting, found 3 SGs, and 1 SG up at the Coldain camp just east of the ST entrance. [NOTE: I would have had a ball getting them all, but my method of bringing them down takes half mana (lvl 51, 196wis) for SGs, and almost full mana for the ESGs.

First, I buff using Thorncoat, Wolfform, SLN, STR, Chloro and Resist Magic. Med to full. I make sure to have Starfire and Terrorize animal memmed.

Then, I snare my quarry and bring it all the way south near the coastline, avoiding adds if possible. Make sure not to outrun or you *will* lose it as you leave its aggro range. The pathing along the coastline will make the critter head east-west when feared, thus keeping it from flying back into the crowd of dervishes, dire wolves and manticors. [NOTE: ESGs *will* outrun you in wolfform if snare is resisted].

When in range at the coastline, fear the critter, drop a DoT if using ES Vambraces, and then drop Starfire. Snow Griffons take about 3 for them to go snare-dumb; Elder Snow Griffons take about 5-6. Beware that if snare-dumb, and you're out of range, they will begin to heal themselves. Once snare-dumb, I'll sit and med, being sure to keep them DoT'ed.

I haven't seen a preference for drops of eggs, but in about 30 killed, I've gotten 13 eggs.

Hope this helps.

I found that the majority of the Snow Griffins that I found were between the coldain ghost near Kael(forgot his name) and Sleepers Tome entrance.
Got my 4 eggs in under an hour running between these 2 points. Helps to have track though
Hope this helps=)

Has anyone else noticed the amount of Hitpoints this "Maximum Level: 45" Flying Caster has? I was wandering around one day with my level 50 druid, and happened upong this creature.

It Con'd blue to me and I knew most creatures were not supposed to be over level 45, so I took it upon myself to party with it.

I did my typical:
Engulf roots: 160 Damage
Drifting Death DOT: ?? Damage, (forgot)
ensnare
Starfire: 612 Damage
Starfire: 612 Damage
Engul roots: 160 Damage
Starfire: 612 Damage
(total 2156 HP W/O DOT considered)

He still had plenty of life left, to my surprise. Since I was out of mana, and I had a 29damage thorns buff on, I figured I would melee it the rest of the way. Well, I was clawed 108 damage every time, not much my 29damage and 22 damage weapon was doing to him. I had to run for it.

Has anyone else noticed this about the elder snow griff? It seems to me that this griff probably had close to 2700+ HP, anyone know for sure on this "level 45" blue to a level 50 creature?

I really don';t know what the egg is for.. I kill my first snow griffin and looted the egg.. Didn't know it was THAT rare..I tried to right click to eat the egg :-| !!!. Since it was no drop.. so it was not right clickable.. and I destroy it instead since I can't eat it.. Sorry guys.. was rather hungry at that time duh...
Soloing one as a 44 mage
# Aug 06 2001 at 7:54 PM Rating: Decent
I saw one of these today and since I'm in ew to get those eggs (birds that carry their eggs around rather than put them in a nest?) I promptly attacked it. Well after medding up and selfbuffing and expendience on my pet - as promptly as you can do anything in eq. I was hoping to mage kite it so I Malisement, then dot, then chaincast Shock of Swords to get it's attention. Think maybe my pet was a victim of the patch that makes mobs stick to pets or maybe it was to tasty for the Griffin but while I was waiting for third recycle of SoS it finished for my pet and came after me. I ran to get some distance between the two of us (thank you random shaman lvl 49 for the sow) and luckily enough the Elder Griffin will stop to cast dds so I just ran until it hit me with a spell then stopped and blasted. Lots of fun. When it ran I summoned a new pet and it finished it off. Used all of my mana but got half a bub of blue =] and never took more than a bub of damage = 200hp
Damn thing dropped a rune of banding and nothing else...

Picked up an Elder Snow Griffin Claw, anyone know what it's for?
These guys are ranger class.
# Jun 23 2001 at 12:01 AM Rating: Default
They hit hard and cast low lvl druid spells like grasping roots and I swear I saw an elder cast firefist.
Not bad
# May 19 2001 at 6:27 AM Rating: Default
These aren't too bad. Lots of ways to kill them. 1st couple times though I add trouble from other stuff aggroing me while killing it. Nothing worse than annoying greens getting in the way when you are killing a caster.

I looted one of these becaues its suppose to be very vaulable., somone was shouting they would let another loot it for 700pp. So, since it is suppose to be sooo valuble, I'l like to know what quest its for , etc.

I'd appreciate any information regarding the quest, class, reward, etc. that anyone can offer.

Thanks!

I'm a druid and since i have track it was still very hard to find snow griffons. Untill someone told me where to find them. If you go south *i think it south* of the orc fort and run for a while you will find a area with lots of snow griffons and elders. Though track helps out a lot. hehe The reward is awesome and im guessing the 4th shawl quest is using brewing so i cant wait. Good Huntin

The 4th Quest
# Mar 18 2001 at 12:01 PM Rating: Default
The 4th Quest has to do with getting Tanik Back to Thurgadin. I have seen him not far from the Great Span, past the first ridge as you go in a southwest direction.

When you hail him he tells you about escaping from the giants clutches, and he needs an elixar or something, (can't remember for sure). He asks for "help".

If you say, "I will help", he fains death and if I remember correctly 3 giants spawn to the east of where he is standing/laying and approach at a run. Since I didn't know this was the 4th part of the Shawl quest, and I was soloing, seeing them approach, I went the other direction :)
I can solo one, but not 3.

I will see if I can complete this part of the quest and let you know what I find out.

Snow Griffin eggs are used in the third of the Duties for the Crown quests in Thurgadin. You need 4 eggs to make Snow Griffin Souffle.

The quest has a pretty nice reward (see allakhazam's quest pages for info), and snow griffins are damn hard to find, not sure how rare a drop the egg is as I haven't found enough griffs yet.

The reward is (IMHO) worth 2400pp, but I don't think I'd pay that much anyway (maybe 100 or 250 an egg).

RE: Snow Griffin Egg
# Jul 12 2001 at 4:20 AM Rating: Decent
There's no use at all to talk about a price of the eggs as they are NO DROP. And as little amandment... The Shawl isn't THE good item of the third quest, unless you want to go ahead with the quest series. The really cool reward is Thoridains Seal, which is great for every Caster in Range Slot (Wis+3 Int+3 Mana+3 svcold+3 ... Think I missed a stat).
At this point you really should think of trying to get on with the quest, because after 4th step it is really getting hard. In terms of getting the Drops and in terms of Trade Skills. Pottery (for 4th) and Baking (for 3rd) are easy, but Tailoring (5th / 6th / 7th) and Jewelry are not that easy to increase.

But back to the eggs. You NEED a treacker to find those Griffs. I killed them in sum for 5 quests (Twice me, and 3times for friends) I always had luck, but I think for my friends we always hunted the 4 eggs for more then 6 hours. There are not many griffs around and the eggs are quite rare since a patch. But if youre going with coldain faction, it's defenetly worth doing this quest.

I found most of the griffs near Kael entrance, some at Ry'Gorr fort and north of bridge line (found there also the Elder Griffin 3 times)

Yes they are a no drop item but i think there talking about payying for looting rights
RE: Snow Griffin Egg
# Mar 29 2001 at 1:56 PM Rating: Decent
I can't see paying more than 100pp for an egg unless you are desperate. Though if the rarity on griffons has increased substantially with the latest patch, that price might go up, alas.
Druid way to kill em ...
# Feb 02 2001 at 5:54 PM Rating: Decent
As a druid (I am Halfling Druid, Lvl 48 by now) those creatures are pretty easy to kill. Just med to full mana, then cast: Snare, Fear Animal, Dot, Fear Animal, med, ... if fear breaks, recast ... if Dot breaks, recast ... else med ... wait ... you may throw in a DD from time to time to speed things up a bit ... wait ... recast ... get EXP.
possible strategy
# Feb 02 2001 at 1:24 PM Rating: Default
Get a shaman to slow the biznitch, snare, and root him. I wouldn't think about letting tanks go in because they drain your mana for nothing on heals ) Anyways, only once have I been aggroed by this bizcuit, very first day to velious, I attacked the dwarves, I die, and omw back to retrieve my corpse, died again to this griff heh. The one only time I tried to fight this elder griffin, I couldn't even catch up to it with sow on so I was like ah, **** it, and went back to farming rygorr )
There goes my plan of soloing these things
# Feb 01 2001 at 8:19 PM Rating: Decent
Too bad they cast spells and root. I wanted to solo these guys for a bit.
Well that hurt...
# Jan 21 2001 at 8:29 PM Rating: Default
These things cast.

Some kind of Shock spell and a cheapie Root. Dunno which spells exactly, and they weren't nearly as bad as the melee smack they'll lay down.

Owie, at any rate.
RE: Well that hurt...
# Mar 29 2001 at 2:00 PM Rating: Decent
Their offensive spells aren't anything to write home about, they use very low druid or ranger DDs. However, they can lay a medium DOT on you occasionally.

The real problem of course, is the SoW/Roots they use, cause if they catch you their melee is a world of hurt.
