I would venture to guess that this named can spawn in place of any "a shadow guardian" mobs outside. However, he did indeed spawn for me today in place of one of the "a shadow guardian" that paths from the tower to the water on the southern side. Standing at +970, +3594 and facing the tower, there will be two roamers that come into view (one will path right over the top of you at this location). He took the place of one of these roamers - I couldn't tell for sure which one as I didn't make it over to him until killing the ones I had just pulled. He dropped nothing for me. Edit: I am on the Agnarr server

The shadow guardians in EW may drop the ring and shoulders but the ones in Iceclad outside of TOFS drop the Chill Dagger, Snowball and various words and runes and even then somewhat uncommonly. Killed the ones outside TOFS for 3 levels and never gotten a ring or shoulders except of the named.

I got a "Ring of Frost" off of "a shadow guardian" outside of the Tower of Frozen Shadow today, so they are dropping. Probably killed around 20 or 30 guardians before I saw the ring.

These things now drop Runes & pages , and even got Frozen Mantle from one.

BUT

be warned , when they are under 20% , they now port themselves back to the tower ( same spot you pulled em from ). Only good thing is aggro is wiped when they do.

Level 34-36 Necromancer on Tallon Zek
# Jan 13 2002 at 8:01 AM Rating: Good
I am a level 34 Necromancer on Tallon Zek and I hunted these guys solo last night.

Here is what I did:

I put on all my buffs (Shield, Steelskin, Resist Cold and Disease [last two because, as I said... I'm on a PvP Server]). After my buffs are applied I meditated to full and cast gather shadows. I then approached the tower and moved around until I heard the "swosh swosh" sound, and located the Guardian. (They will be around the outside of the tower moving around.) Do a quick check to see if any others are around, and attempt to root it. They seemed to have very low MR so I was able to land a root almost every time. If root fails, run toward the waters edge and try again. (No mobs roam around the water edge.) Once root sticks, apply Dooming Darkness, Venom of the Snake, Boil Blood, and re-root. Then sit down to meditate pretty far out of its range so if root breaks you can stand up, and recast it again before it gets to you. The DoTs should kill it, but if they don't just life tap it (if you need to) or cast Acid Blast. After it is dead move into the water to Meditate.

It is important to stay out of Melee Range of this creature as it will kill you quickly. If things go badly, cast Feign Death. Pulling them Solo should be easy, just try and pull them away from the tower incase more wander by.

I had the following spells memorized:
Highest Version of Life Tap
Venom of the Snake
Tobalts Acid Blast
Dooming Darkness
Boil Blood
Root
Gather Shadows
Feign Death

I used Gather Shadows as my "Switch" slot. (Meaning I would drop that spell to memorize a buff to cast, or sometimes replace it with Call of Bones.)

I also used Breath of the Dead so I could meditate underwater safely. This really isn't necessary unless you play on a PvP Server. This should allow you to meditate without fear of being attacked by a Player or NPC. (Just swim to the very bottom and a little ways away from the island.)

I am level 36, however about four kills can give me one blue bub. These guys also gave me allot less trouble than the snow cougars using the same tactics above.
Our friends the guardians

Well. These guys do suck. Zoned out of TOFS as a 34 cleric, groupmates not with me. Just my luck, 3 shadow guardians at zoneout, bye bye to my priestly ***. Rooted and atoned one, got jumped by another, etc. So when you zone out of TOFS please run like hell to the nearest safe spot, unless a solo-type class, grouped, or much higher level. (Go hang out with the gnolls if you can make it.)

Oh, and Summoned spells do not work on them, and neither do Undead spells. Just tried last night.

Lastly I was camping these for revenge after my untimely death, with a melee partner, and they seemed like good XP and not very hard kills. Not too hard to get singles either. Stick to the ones around the Tower and you'll be OK.

I'm a lvl 42 Paladin, going for a swim, and all of a sudden I get jumped by one of these. Got me down to 40% health. I rooted him, stood back, healed to 100%, and re-engaged in battle. It then took me down to 80% before he died. I even got exp. Watch out for these things.

i was just killed by one of these waiting for the boat. lost my level!!! it was green and i only knocked it down to 80%. not sure whoes cruel joke this stupid thing is!
right levels, wrong spread?
# Jul 11 2001 at 2:32 AM Rating: Default
The spread of levels on these must be a lot bigger than is posted.

Took on a few of these (one at a time) as an L37 ranger with an L35 wizard partner and, i must say the first 2 were pretty easy, but the third one almost got us both, even though we started with a full set of buffs and full mana. And I am certain that all of them were Shadow Guardians and not Snow Dervishes.

On the other hand, we never once got anywhere near less than 75% hp fighting cougars. Panic Animal rocks :)

ok its pretty odvious to me whats going on. Its not that there arent lvl 27 to 31 guardians. I myself have killed a few blue ones with my lvl 30 pally. But the wanderes around ring are WAY outa my league. They seem to be about lvl 35+ by the way they hit compared to the others. One even hit me for upper 80s twice.
ouch...
# Jun 14 2001 at 3:47 AM Rating: Decent
I was running through iceclad and was attacked by one of these, conned blue (at lvl 34) and didn't hit me for more than 75, but hit me in that range a lot, and really fast, got it down to about half health when it killed me

BTW I am a warrior with unbuffed hp at 1239
Some info
# Jun 05 2001 at 12:18 AM Rating: Decent
Shadow Guardians are monks. Most of them have a max damage in the mid 70s, though the highest level ones max for as high as 80. They kick in the 60s (Flying Kick, I imagine), and have other monk secondary attacks as well. Their melee damage output is tremendous for their level range.

However, because they are monks and not warriors, they seem to have lower hit point totals then, for example, Snow Cougars. They also seem to have lower resist rates than the Snow Cougars, but I may have just had better luck on the Guardians than I did the Cougars.

I am a 39 druid and some of these still con blue. But then there are two distinct creatures that look very similar; the shadow guardians and the snow dervishes. And they both make that "whoosh whoosh" sound as they come up on you. They are the reason I hate porting into Iceclad (my body is 'visible' for a good 2 minutes or so before I actually zone in, and am usually under attack by that time).

# May 17 2001 at 4:40 PM Rating: Default
"2 minutes or so before I actually zone in"??? Damn, and I was complaining about it taking me 15 to 20 secs to zone. Must suck to be you.

And your body is not "visible" for that amount of time before you zone. Ok, other PCs may see you but NPCs will not be able to attack you until you are actually back in control of you character.

********* plain as that. At 34 I ported in and respawned butt *** naked in highkeep at the bank. So yes, you CAN be smacked on in the middle of zoning.
Where do these spawn?

I was sitting at the docks and was attacked 2 times in one day, do they spawn near the docks, or was i just having bad luck? If they do spawn near the docks, then i need to find a new place to hunt.

I'm a 30 Necro and I've been soloing these for pretty much the whole lvl 30 level. There are fairly easy to defeat, just use dooming darkness to slow them down. Add some DOT's and just keep out from their hard hitting arms. At 30, it takes about 15 even lvl to raise one yellow bubble. Oh...I've been doing this without a pet too. Easy, if you know what you are doing.

No one should ever camp these. They group on you very quick, are hard to see and hit hard and fast. They are harder than killing Direwolves or cats of the same level with almost no loot. I only fight these when they attack me and even then if I'm close to a zoneline I'll zone of feign if I'm not full life at least 1/2 mana (even if they are green). With a full group they may be worthwhile to fill in when you can't find an easier pull to keep the constant fighting, but I don't recommend getting a Guardian Group.

'No one should ever camp these' - if they are monks then they should be light on HP and hit hard. So while a melee class (like SK) shouldn't bother, a caster class that can root'n'nuke can kill with impunity.

If you see one, run. run. run until the ache in your legs is so excruciating that you cannot see straight. Even then sit down for only a minute and keep running. 1 of these and his smaller brother the snow dervish took my lvl 49 fully-self-buffed druid friend down to 10% health in 10 seconds, they jumped us at the druid ring BTW. I only survived because i was invised next to him, was jumped at another time and lasted 2.5 seconds (30 mage) by them. Big big big aggro, they will start attacking before youre in hearing range

I was in a group of three fighting cougars near the tower. I am a 32nd chanter, the other 2 were a 31st level monk and a 33rd level druid. We decided to take on one of these guys. THey hit a bit harder, but we did fine, no trouble. The named cougar Midnight gave us more problems than these guys. Perhaps there are tougher ones near the Druid ring.

I am a lv 32 war and had a group with my friends, lv 35 cleric , 36 ranger, a 35 and 38 wiz and 40 mage. Was decided to go fight in the tower and since both the guardians conned blue and one green to the magi we ran for the door. These things hit hard and hit fast. Killed the mage in about 10 secs and beat me down to half health was buffed to over 1600 hp in about 10 secs. Do not believe any con in this blasted zone. Also Yes we can kill them fairly quickly with a group but yer tanks will take serious damage. Any high lv Cleric that needs money for spells just hang out in Ice Clad Ocean or any other Velious or Kunark zone. Have yet to see five minutes pass without a shout for an xp res. )

A group of 4 of us, 35 and 37 Warriors, 30 Cleric, and 32 Mage (with blue pet) can handle one of these from around the tower with little problem. They do hit fairly hard, double 40-50 sometimes, occasionally a single 70 maybe. Only trick is to hit'em hard and fast and make'em run
Mage was using air pet to stun, so that helped too. When we pulled only singles, Cleric was rarely below 40% mana. We could handle 2 at most tho, if more we just into the tower, with Warriors taking the beating. Never reached critical hurt stage tho (i.e. 1 bub health or less). Your warriors need to have weapons that dish out good damage tho. 37 Warrior was using EXE axe, and that seemed to help out a lot. Not a mob to use dual 1-handers on, if you have a good 2h weapon
Hard hitting...kite em
# Dec 11 2000 at 2:30 AM Rating: Default
These things hit like a ton of bricks. Mult 80s are not uncommon.

Also Im guessing they do range in lvl up thru 30 or so. Some have conned yellow to a lvl 33 mage.

One wanderer near the Dragon ring in Iceclad seems to be the tougher of the lot.

I don't think I ever saw an even con or higher con when I was 33 - are you confusing them with Snow Dervishes?

Charm a Dire Wolf and sic it on one of these things and watch it go down FAST. They have very few hit points. Much easier than Snow Cougars in Iceclad.
