I started Quad Kiting these as a Level 39 Druid (Quad the kitties near the gnomes until you hit 39). Pull with Snare to the west ridge line, there is a spot next to the dragon marker closest to the bridge with very little traffic. Keep Terrorize Animal memed, and fear any adds, then kite away your quad in the opposite direction (at Level 40-41 I could deal with 6 or 7 in this way). Just keep track of how many wolves have you on their hate list. Keep Ring of Surfall memed, and refresh your SoW, of course, before each pull. You should be able to med up before the adds come back, or you can TP out and come back at full mana with a (hopefully) clean hate list. Also keep up all defensive buffs (including Regen) before each pull, as you can take a bub or three of damage pulling. At Level 43 I'm still getting nearly a yellow of XP per hour!

I've done some experimentation, and found that Dire Wolves have about 1300 HP, give or take a hundred for the level range.

Earlier Today my friend (37 Pally) and I (36 Shaman) were camping Ry'Gorr Orcs at a small camp and decided to kill one of these. He never hit for more than the low 30s and didn't do very good damage overall to my friend. We killed it in about a minute or so and it was actually quite easy. So they aren't as menacing as they are made out to be.

Can i use my charm animal line of spells on one of these as my 29 druid (i got some good char gear so it tends to last) and then use one of these to tank for me against a second dire wolf? then do the usual wait till the charm breaks and nuke my former pet into oblivion?

These are the easiest and greatest exp for a solo ranger.I did level 41 in about 5 hours of playing time. Level 42 in 6 and level 43 in about 6 hours soloing these. It is really simple. Find the named mob Corduth and then head a little ways to the east. There is a area where it is a very gradual desent to the ocean. This is the area where you want to pull to. There is not a lot of traffic and no pathing of creatures in this area. Hit your track and find the nearest dire wolf. When you find it do not pull it with snare. You may be hosting a party full of dires by the time it gets to your pull spot. I usually pull with stinging swarm. Just before i get the the area with the gradual desent i turn around and snare. Back up the hill a little ways (away from the ocean when you panic the dire it will head for the ocean). Next comes panic animal. Just chase the animal and hit it with weapons (there is no need for any other spells) when fear wears off back up the hill a little ways and recast panic animal (if you don't you will end up fighting in the water). It usually only takes one snare spell and 2 or 3 castings of panic animal to kill them. You should be able to do 4 or 5 before you need to heal or med. Get it down to where it works and do a full level in several hours. Loot sux but hey why do you want to share EXP with others unless you have too.

Here...here! Just took my 32 Half Elf Ranger to the EW last night. I don't think I saw a single mob that was Green to me. Looks like I can hunt here for a good while. These DW's are hard hitters and I would agree with the guess below of around 1300 HP, give or take. I have my HP just over 1300 and going head to head with these is a risk. I will try this panic animal method if it will save me some down time. Right now I hunt the Blue and Yellows. My method last night was Snare, bow, Stinging Swarm, bow, Flaming Arrow, bow, Ignite, bow, Invoke Lightning, bow, Panic animal and finish them off. Down time between each one for Mana regen was kind of high but health never got below 80%.

I had a few problems with the Panic Animal when we would cross paths with a Frost Giant. Got stomped once by a red FG but had him down to about 30% when his last strike killed me just as I was clicking the POK book to port. Dhow! Nothing like looking down on your body as it lay next to the portal! :( Kind of funny listening to the FG go "ouch"..."uh"...."oh"..."ouch" as I worked my dual wield / double attack for all it was worth! I think had I not turned my back on him I would have been able to port out. Oh well, learned my leason. Going to the Ocean side now to try it out!

This sounds great. Thank you for the post. I have a 41 Ranger who dinged my last two levels fear kiting Grifs in NK and animals in OT... I am heading to Velious to kite Direwolves and snow cougars.

My question is, How often do MQ direwolf pelts drop? Its half of the Direwolf fure cloak quest. No drop quest reward unfortunately.

... well I guess I'll find out soon enough /smile

I got my MQ pelt off the giant's pet wolves in GD. From the reading I've done, I don't think they drop from the dire wolves in EW. Not done enough hunting to prove this though.

Dire Wolves as 29 Druid
# Jul 05 2001 at 10:22 AM Rating: Default
I hang out at the bridge in EW and solo any of these that are blue or even to me. Same method. Ensnare, Imoliate, Crud, fear, med, re-fear and Dot as needed. I've gotten stackable Tufts of Dire Wolf fur as well as stackable Gloves of Rellos Zek from them in addition to the pelts. They are so easy for us Druids.

Dire Wolves pathing
# Jun 04 2001 at 12:06 PM Rating: Default
Outstanding method for killing these guys with minimal drain on mana.

1: Ensnare.

2: Pull to set of two flows that are off to the right of the druid portal.

3: Once near flow, DOT, and Immolate

4: When on flow. Terrorize Animal. The puppy will path out to sea.

He comes back when fear breaks, so when he gets back on the flow, terrorize again.

I have done this so far with up to 3.

The big benefit here is that while they are swimming, you can med up.
Not this one
# May 20 2001 at 5:06 PM Rating: Decent
Normal dire wolfs CANT overrun sow... theres a rare spawn on Iceclad ocean ( the one fo the eyepach quest ) that can overrun sow...
I was in a group around 30-35 and we killed this guys for 3 hours... they are easyer then Giants or dervishs
Can't out run sow
# May 15 2001 at 1:31 AM Rating: Default
Probably repeating stuff here..but they DO NOT outrun sow..I've been quad kiting these buggars since 34th lvl. Exp is still good at 40. 4 kills net 1 blue bub at 40....at 39 they were giving almost two blue bubs for a quad kite.
Faction

Killing Dire wolves changes faction with Frost Giants :( Found this out the hard way, lucky Rangers over 30 have SOW...

How do I get my faction back with Frost Giants? I want to be able to travel Velious without being aggroed by giants (for now hehehehe)? PLZ post and email answer,

"Killing Dire wolves changes faction with Frost Giants :("

Wrong Dire Wolves. You are probably thinking of Drakkal Dire Wolves which are on the giant factions. These Dire Wolves are factionless.
RE: Faction
# May 20 2001 at 5:12 PM Rating: Decent
I think normal direwolfs dont give any faction, there are direwolfs that are giants pets... the only way to get the faction back is killing Dwarfs or dragons... and BTW almost every class and race is KOS to giants at start... you need to get faction with em... and thats not easy if you want to be freinds with the dwarfs 2...
Panic Attack
# Apr 19 2001 at 8:22 PM Rating: Decent
I am having a blast killing these stupid things. I have killed as many as four of them with my lvl 39 ranger before stopping to med and heal. Here's how, hit them with snare, then panic animal and chop away at them as they try to run. The snare and mini fear wear off quickly so keep them up or OUCH these things bite hard. I have looted a RUNE of something or another off one of them, but not much else worthwhile. Loads of EXP though.
DireWolf Stalker. Be careful.
# Apr 09 2001 at 1:06 PM Rating: Decent
I had no problem soloing these at lvl 45 while trying to get a med quality dire wolf pelt for the direwolf fur cloak quest. That was until I got lazy, and didn't notice one was different until I was almost dead, DOH, then noticed it was a Direwolf Stalker. I did kill it, but it was significantly tougher. More hit points, hits faster, and was hitting in the 60 range more often. I must disagree with the description at the top of the page though. I was easily outrunning these with SOW.
One just killed me
# Mar 31 2001 at 4:33 PM Rating: Decent
I was in Iceclad on the tower island, and I popped in the water for a split second and out comes one of these things to attack me. I got it to about half life before I got killed.

36 rogue from Druzzil
my druid loves these
# Mar 21 2001 at 2:34 AM Rating: Default
I have been quad kitting these little guys since 36 now all most 40. they give alot more exp then cougars. I barley get any exp from cougars now but still get real good exp off of wolfs. and they are easier to kit because they are slower. They are not as fast as sow or wolf form which is awesome. They have alitlle more HP the then the cougars. It takes about 1100-1200 dmg before they drop. Also the easiest place to do this is near te bridge. giants are around but not gnolls or ghnomish types that will kill you in wolf form.
Why no ID tag?
# Feb 26 2001 at 12:36 AM Rating: Default
Anyone else notice these mobs do not have an ID tag above them?

I believe the Coldain Wolves also do not have a tag either.

Perhaps this is a ploy to trick PC's into attacking a Coldain Wolf by accident and then run to the Thurgadin guards only to get waxxed!
The definitive guide to Dire Wolves
# Feb 16 2001 at 11:24 AM Rating: Good
The Dire Wolf:
Easy to ensnare, but roots dont last
Most nukes go off to full effect (at 35 anyway)
Sounds like a TIE Fighter flying past when it dies. Listen the next time you kill one.
Drops one of 3 items:
Low Quality Pelt: This is used for a No Drop armor quest, the quest NPC is in the gnoll camp by the tower. If you are hunting these, odds are your stuff is better than what the quest provides.
Medium Quality Pelt: Same as above; this + 2 skinning stones (from EW) gets you a cloak with some mild stat increases and AC; again, what you have already is probably better, and the quest reward is NO DROP.
High Quality Pelt: same as above: semi-crappy armor item that is NO DROP. All 3 of these quests require the pelt plus a set of 2 of another item, such as cutting shells or walrus blubber. (also gotten in EW)

Bottom line; if you want to hunt these, do it for the xp; the loot is essentially worthless. If you have a choice, hut the cougars; almost the same xp, they don't hit as hard and you have a chance of getting a Cougar Claw Earring.

Fast? I beg to differ
# Feb 04 2001 at 4:54 AM Rating: Default
once Ensnared these things are slow as hell. Easier to quad - kite than Cougars in my opinion
agreed
# Mar 04 2001 at 1:07 AM Rating: Decent
Cougars are as fast as a sow but those have regular speed. With sow I outrun them with no problem.
RE: agreed
# Apr 26 2001 at 10:54 PM Rating: Decent
I'll third that. The cougars are just a hair slower than SoW (you can outrun them with SoW, but you don't gain much ground.) These guys are pokey in comparison.

I also find green cougars at 38. I haven't seen any green dire wolves yet. The exp on these guys is noticably better.

They hit harder, though, and have somewhat more magic resistance. I started going for them at 38, you might not want to try them before that.
