whoever thought putting a 1.5 epic mob in this zone on the same path as the epic 1.0 mob was a ******. not only did they put them on the same walking trails, but they made the paladin Kill the other Mob just for giggles. so after only 100 rogue lions my tarbul finally spawns.. and before i can get a cast off to pull him my way.. the stupid paladin hits him so fast and for so much damage.. he's already dead.. so much for quick regen. was dead in less than 6 seconds. totally lame. worse then quillmane i think .at least quillmane will wander all day til you kill it. and nothing will attack it.
Quillmane vs Rogue Lion
# Apr 27 2007 at 5:38 PM Rating: Decent
The rogue lion is on a 39 sec spawner, can spawn anywhere in the zone... 39x2 is... 78... hello quillmane!

Got him to spawn killing only the rogue lion, 38 lions after and he spawned.

solo'd him with 49 mage, used steadfast servant for heals, tanked down

hits around 30 - 101

So conclusion

PH/Giant is on 39 sec spawner.
Can pop anywhere in the zone.
Hits max 101
Soloable with 49 mage useing servant AA.

Killed on AB
# Apr 03 2007 at 6:26 PM Rating: Decent
I finally killed him on AB. I had been here twice before with no results. I got virtue for my pet and KEI for me (I no longer think I needed them) and headed over to EK. The loc is approx -1400, -1900. This is Crag Hill. A rogue lion and Tarbul Earthstrider spawn to the North, but they wander here. I have not seen them wander anywhere else first. A rogue lion or Tarbul Earthstrider will spawn a few minutes after killing them, so don't worry about having to wait for a while without sight of one of the two for long periods. I would recommend killing things in the area for tailoring and research (words, pages, random stuff, runes, and practice rune creations). It took only about 3-5 kills of rogue lions this time, but I killed them a lot more the other times I came here with no Tarbul.

Tarbul himself is easy. At level 51, the only problem was that I got aggro and had trouble moving out of melee range (as if I was rooted, rather than stunned. I was neither). A cleric was nearby and healed my pet, but there was no need.

Now I have my Rain of Karana, and am one step closer to my epic.

Edit: Also, watch out for Drevlin Knacknabber. He WILL kill you if you aren't careful.

Spawning Theory
# Jul 05 2006 at 3:44 PM Rating: Decent
Ok here is my theory on spawning Tarbul. I camped him for two days just killing random Rogue lions with no success. As soon as I logged on my Ranger and tracked the lions I was able to kill 4 or 5 rogue lions within a minute or two and he popped in the southwest corner. My theory is not that you simply have to kill the rogue lions, but that you have to kill several and kill them quickly. Hope this helps.
2 Spawns in 1 Hour
# Jun 04 2006 at 1:45 PM Rating: Decent
I came to East Karana with a 55 mage and a 54 ranger. We tried the rogue lion routine and did not get any Tarbul spawns in 2 hours. We came back the next day and leveled a large area in the south east over and over. We got Tarbul to spawn in about 25 minutes but he spawned right near the human camp at -800, -175 and while I out DPS'd the humans they got the kill shot and his corpse poofed. We were unable to taunt him out of the village also. We were about to log and decided to level for a little longer and sure enough Tarbul repoped in about another 15 minutes of leveling.
Rogue Lion Thing Works
# May 26 2006 at 5:43 AM Rating: Decent
As of last night I tried the Rogue Lion theory. I think it works. I went to a friends house and borrowed his PC because he has a program that allows him to see the mobs on the map. So what I did was rounded up all the rogue lions I could find and AE'd them. Then turned off all the mobs on the screen... 20 seconds or so later a rogue lion popped.... I ran and killed it. 20 seconds later pop again but on the other side of the zone. I did this for about 30 minutes and Trabul finally popped. He popped in a spot where a Rogue Lion had popped twice before. Next to the named gnolls.
Tarbul Earthstrider
# May 21 2006 at 12:33 PM Rating: Decent
Ok - after asking time and time again for help and getting nowhere, and these posts are not good for this info - here is where it popped for a friend I was helping.

First we killed any and all Rogue Lions and just about anything else we could find on the hill just to the right of the path to Highpass Hold. Just on the right before the path there is a level area where usually 3 named Gnolls appear - if you see them there you are in the right area.

Now the Rogue Lions did not appear all in one spot - some where near the gnolls, some appeared on far right side of that hill I was talking about by the small farmer village, some on top of the hill, some from all over the place. Other people (like beastlords) were killing all lion types for high quality skins, so if you can get anyone else to help kill anything and everything, do it!!

After 4 hours running our @$$es off killing anything that moved, Tarbul Earthstrider appeared on the far right side of the hill (if you are at the named gnoll camp, turn right and head over until you see the farmer's houses) and he was facing towards Highpass Hold. Level 49 Magician with the pet bought at level 48 Fire Elemental, both with Virtue and Koadic's Endless Intellect - took him down, alone (I wasn't there when he popped up), and ended up with about 10% life and mana left (on both player and pet) but he dropped the Mage Epic item also.

Can't guarantee he will pop there all the time but this is the best information I have and we have found while trying to get him to pop for 3 days. Once I get the location I will re-post where he spawned for her. This was on The Rathe server by the way. -=))

Hope this helps!

Its frustrating me by now, especially cause I am playing on the german server and those Idiots don't know how to translate from english to german correctly. So I am killing all kinds of crap here and hope to see that dude.....

Sorry bout the "idiots" but I am pissed off by now camping Sol A for 10 days and now that crap!

I just saw him earlier this morning. He spawned on the hillside next to where the lower level named gnolls are grouped together, Next to the path to HHK. The in game time was somewhere between midnight and 4 am.

No clue if there's a trigger placeholder for him. I was the only one in the zone, and when he spawned the only things I'd killed for the past hour were :
Crag Spiders
The named gnolls in that group (Thuxvell?)
Lion Matriarchs and Patriarchs.

After he spawned on the hillside he started to walk North towards the zone to the evil eyes, the halted and turned around. Last I saw of him he was heading South over the hill in the direction of the fishing village.

My 25th. level BST decided not to interupt his walk.

I was running around farming silks with my mage and just happened to see this punk. He was just roaming around threatening to ruin my day. My mage is lvl twenty-five at the time of this post, so I did what many would have done in my place: logged the mage off really quick and logged on the Main: a lvl 65 wizard.

I did not attempt my fire nukes since this forum says he is all but immune--did not want to experiment. I just snared him with Atol's Spectral Shackles, rooted him, nuked with Draught of Thunder and Ice Meteor. He kept breaking root pretty easily (most nuked giants seem to have this in common) but he did not resist any of the magic or cold based attacks I cast on him. Like most giants he was immune to the stun portion of the Thunder spell, but I was just trying to kill him, so that was no really a concern for me.

I ran a log parse program after wards. I had to deal around 14k damage to bring him down. This takes into consideration he does regen rather quickly and I had to run a little to reroot.

After he went down, I logged back to the mage and she is now the proud holder of a drop she cannot use for may levels LOL.

All DD spells break root, it's not the giants, it's the spells. That's why when Rangers are root rotting and shooting, they don't nuke their mobs until they want them to start death walk for double damage

After about 8 hours trying to spawn him i was about to quit and go to sleep. I tried killing everything in zone to pop him, but it didn't work. So i came out with an idea not to kill anything at all, but kill only Rogue Lion. First i killed and i use ranger to track, nothing on track. The 2nd Rogue Lion i killed, It finally pop. 65 magician with 400 AAs nuke him a few times, earth pet went at it and i got my Rain of Karana.

Solo at 52

It is possible, indeed straightforward, to solo Tarbul with a 52 Mage.

The basics:
Level 52 mage, mostly Bazaar-equipped, 2900 mana, 1500 HP with self-buffs.

51 Earth Pet, with 2 daggers, 2 lev rings, elemental defender, coldstone, plate armour (basically, as much AC as possible).

Pet was buffed with BO3, Shield of Lava and expedience (so he generally keeps up with my Jboots).

Tank Tarbul with your pet, play pet cleric.

I had HoV, but you don't need it.
I had a KEI.
For most of the fight I was sitting on my drogmor. (You can probably get by without KEI if you have a horse/drog to sit on because I had 51% mana left at the end.)

The full story
I went to EK to recce Crag Hill intending to come back another time to get Tarbul. With pet-zoning now in, I already had a fully equipped pet in tow. I also had a HoV and KEI up.

As soon as I got to Crag Hill I saw the rogue lion, so killed it. I started farming silks and pelts from the spiders and lions, and killed the rogue lion twice more within about half an hour. Shortly after that Tarbul showed up, conning DB. Since I intended to come back, I initially just followed him around on Crag Hill for a while, carefully staying out of aggro range.

After a while, I plucked up courage and used a low level bolt to aggro Tarbul from as great a distance as possible. I then set off at full Jboots speed towards the NK-zone bridge intending to fight there so I could zone if needed. When I got there and looked back, Tarbul was nowhere to be seen, although he was still showing as my target. It was odd. Pet was with me, so not fighting Tarbul. I waited... nothing.

I went back to the hill but couldn't find Tarbul anywhere. I carried on killing spiders and various lions. I'd just set my pet on yet another crag spider when WHACK! Tarbul aggroes me from behind! I'm heading for the bridge. WHACK! Nearly 500 HP have gone, but now my Jboots have got me clear and I'm just running, whilst my dumb pet is still toying with the spider as far as I can tell.

I'm getting near the bridge, when I see 'Taunting attacker, Master' and Tarbul's health starts dropping. YAY Goneker! I double back and my pet is fighting Tarbul near the village at the foot of Crag Hill. Pet is at about 70% health, Tarbul about 85%. I get in position, throw a heal at the pet, summon my drogmor, throw another heal.

I keep throwing heals at the pet. I have no problem at all keeping my pet's health up, I don't even have to alternate heals. All the while, Tarbul's health slowly but steadily drops. I get no aggro.

A few minutes later, Tarbul is dead and the Rain of Karana is mine, all mine!

Having read this board before heading off to EK, I really wasn't expecting it to be that easy.

I've been back to Crag Hill farming silks several times since, killing the rogue lion maybe a dozen times with no sign of Tarbul. I was obviously lucky to spawn him so quickly.

Of course, you don't need to mess about like I did. Once Tarbul is up, just pull him to a suitable spot using your preferred method, set your pet on him and play cleric. If you like chaining pets, that might work too, but I'm no expert on pet-chaining.

Go get him!

This guy was a joke. As a level 59 mage all i did was buff my air pet, resist debuff and send him in, then i proceeded to cast manastorm then seeking flame then i cast a hot spell on my pet then manastorm then i sat back and watched. As far as I could tell this guys doesnt regen as much as hes fabled tho cause he dropped after about 45 secs. Also i pulled him with malosini to keep that fire resist thing under control. Just thought Id let every one know that this guy isnt so scary. One could probly kill him at level 55 without too much of a problem.

RUMORED to regenerate accelerated?

I stuck drones of doom, a 34 point dot on him, and his hp continued to rise, rather than fall. He therefore regens over 34 per tick. It's insane.

haha, as of just five min. ago (04:05 AM Central Daylight Time, August 9th 2004) I had Dooming darkness (20 pt/tick dot), Heat Blood (17 pt/tick dot) and heart Flutter (12 pt/Tick dot) and it was keeping him in check, it'd go down 1% and go back up that 1% right before next tick, so he's probably got a high 40/ low 50 pt. per tick regen. I was OOM from Fear kiting, so I had to zone and couldn't stay and examine it more closely

I was in EK killing the Broon / Droon / Proon gang in hopes the AC would wander by. I am a 53 level mage who has yet to even see the AC. Needless to say, I don't have Jboots, :) .

Anyway, I was also keeping an eye out for Tarbul due his dropping Rain of Karana which I needed for my epic.

I was using my new 53 level air pet and he was able to kill Proon, the father cyclops, with only a few heals and with me left at about 30% mana. Proon was dark blue to me. The other two smaller cyclops were both green.

I was in between spawns of the 'oons' so decided to see if I could find Tarbul. I killed rougue lion after rougue lion. All I got were more rougue lions. I finally noticed a willowisp sitting up on craig hill. I thought, well, why not, and killed the wisp. Tarbul spawned about 20 seconds later. He was DB to me. I was expecting him to die like Proon did. No way. The air pet had Lava Shield and Burnout III on. I cast Malosi and elemental maelstom and tried to med. I had to repeatedly heal my pet. My air pet got down to about 8% and I was OOM so I ran for the bridge. I did not make it. I died about a half a bridge length away from the bridge, after being hit a number of time by Tarbul, who was now at about 36%.

I was bound in POK so I asked my wife for help and she said one of her friends, Valinor, was on. Val is a 65 level Cleric and a great guy. Val agreed to rez me and buff me and pet and help out with Tarbul.

After the rez and med and buff we found Tarbul still up. Val hit my pet with two non gem consuming cleric buffs and I had the standard LS and BOIII on him. Val also cast HOV on me. I had found a dot on Father Proon so was able to partially reimburse Valinor for the buff.

Valinor summoned a Hammer of Damnation and we headed out.

It was not a hard kill with a 65 level cleric healing the pet and occasionally nuking Tarbul. He had lots of hit points, as others had mentioned. He only took about 610 damage from my lava bolt, which is on the low side for that nuke. I mostly used elemental maelstom and medded.

When Tarbul died I did get the Rain of Karana, a fine steel greatstaff, and some other non descript item.

I am guessing the only way for me to solo Tarbul would be chain casting pets. The natural DS on the firepet might help, the caveat is that the 52 level firepet does not always cast his own DS, as he is a wizzy in firepet clothing. The 53 airpet is sturdy but would need a LS, same for the 51 level earth pet. A 49 level firepet might do the trick but he would die pretty quickly due to lower hps at that level.

I see where one 51 level mage with some buffs but no KEI and repeated casting of earthpets has taken Tarbul. Has any 51 to 53 level Mage taken Tarbul solo? I have considered that getting the focus pet item for the 49 level firepet might help. I have the broom and the shovel but need the torch if I want to summon a focused firepet.

Always On "Crag Hill"
# May 02 2004 at 11:03 AM Rating: Decent
If you're coming out of HHP, "Crag Hill" is the first long ridgeline on your LEFT, i.e., the southern-most of the two ridges. If you're coming from NK, "Crag Hill" starts where the little village is, just past the bridge & along the road to HHP; it will be on your RIGHT. If you're coming from the Gorge, go straight south, cross one ridgeline; "Crag Hill" is the next ridgeline to the south, just across the road to HHP. You can tell you're at "Crag Hill" if there's a family of named Mucktail Gnolls spawning back at the far eastern end, up in the treeline.

Tarbul appears to spawn at the western-most edge, at the top of the ridgeline, but I don't know whether or not "a rogue lion" has anything to do with spawning him. I saw "a rogue lion" today, while Tarbul was up & runnning around; don't know if that means anything. Once Tarbul pops, he stays up for a LONG time; he was there when I first got to EK, & was up for almost an hour before I found people to help me kill him.

Anyway, a kind Druid (Ellanon) & her husband Wrensong helped me (my 46 mage alt) kill this big bully today. With 63 Druid, 64 Bard, & 46 Mage, Tarbul went down fast & clean. All of my nukes hit for max damage, & I saw no sign of any insanely fast regen rate, but maybe that's because of the help I had killing him.
Warrior solo? hahaha
# Apr 26 2004 at 8:10 PM Rating: Default
56 warrior in EK (for what else besides spider silks). He conned DB and I decided I might give him a try solo (I can solo DB PoJ mobs, so i figured a DB oldworld HG wouldn't be any trouble). I was buffless, except for trusty ol Jboots, I started smackin on him and got him down to 94% while i was at about 90%. His life seemed to be dropping VERY slowly, so i thought i might weaken him just a lil with my Mighty Strike disc...I was smackin him for 50 damage a pop (duel weilding) with 41% worn haste item. I was hitting uber fast, as i always do with 41% haste hehe. Anyways, i got him down to 80% while I was at 70%. I knew it was going to be close, and I was probly gonna lose, so i just ran fer the zone. If he wouldn't have had such high regen I'm about 80% sure i could've soloed him. Alot of people underestimate warrior solo power, but at 54 I soloed rats in PoJ for fun while i was afk (No discs mind you). Anyways, to you warriors out there, this guy, even thought being an old world HG, isn't an easy solo.
Not very rare..

I don't have a loc, but AFAIR it was a bit south of the shops, close to one of the zone lines: from the map I'd guess that was just south of the HHK zone. We just killed everything at random in that area for ten minutes, two hill giants spawned and we killed those, then, not long after, Tarbul spawned. He didn't last long with a full group of 50s, but was tough enough that I'm glad I decided not to try to solo him...

Nre`Loxe Mucktail was one of the mobs we killed when clearing the area out if that's any help: I seem to remember the gnolls don't wander too far from their spawn points.
