A black behemoth of a warrior the Black Reavers are the elite guard of the lords of the City of Mist. They have been said to drop Jade Reavers. Mind that once you kill one, another directly pops from the corpse. After the fifth or sixth of them Lord Rak'Ashiir spawns.

They hit in the mid hundreds and are known to be immune to magic-based attacks and all slows.

We had 3 wizzys in CoM last night and we were landing Lures left and right, even Jyll's landed some partials.

In order of effectiveness

Lure of Lighting - Hit nearly every time. Few resists

Lure of Flame - Hit more than half the time, but more paritals and full resists

Lure of Frost - Pretty much a waste of mana.

As a 54 Dru, I was able to land winged death on a few of them. We had 3 groups, avg lvl 53, including a 60 warr tank. The fights with the reavers were long enough for the DoT to run its full course. A few that resisted once got hit by the second attempt.

A lot of descriptions I read of the BRs and other NPCs that are "immune" to magic based spells now say that these mobs are immune to most spells except the wizard lure line of spells. From what I understand (and don't quote me on this since I'm not a wizzie and have never used a lure based spell in my EQ life), lures are on a different resist system than are regular spells. And a lot of mobs that were highly resistant to spells seem to be succumbing to at least a partial effect of some nukes.

When I describe the BRs, I describe them as "almost" 100% MR, not entirely though. Wizzies have always been the exception to the nuke. *grin*

They are mezzable by a 61 Enchanter, using Glamour of Kintaz. It usually doesn't stick, but sometimes it does, after tashing, of course.

Last night my guild went into CoM for a reaver raid, long story short...

we had 85, not a typo, 85! Black Reavers spawn in a row off of the original!

we got 5 Jade Reavers for the druids in attendance and a few nice spells, and gratz to them.

Anyone know of any records for number of BR's?

I would have thought this was just boasting until last night. Our guild had 3 grops go in to help one of our enchanters do a portion of her epic.

After about 30 reavers in a row one group peeled off to do the epic mob and two groups contiued fighting the never ending Black Reaver. The 2 groups that stayed had no clrics but 2 druids and a couple of Pallys.

Too make a long story short the finally tally on one spawn was 63 Black Reavers with only 2 deaths through the whole cycle.

I can only hope this isn't going to become the norm as this would become ugly very quickly for a single group just trying to get a Jade Reaver for someone.

Took down Lord Rak down tonight for the last part of my epic. While in the attic area where he was, we had reaver respawns from the previous people who were there. The last reaver we had to kill spawned 18 additional reavers on top of it. So, just know that there is a chance for them to spawn MANY times after one dies.
Useful Info I think.
# Jul 10 2002 at 1:05 PM Rating: Excellent
Went in with 2 groups, 52 war, 58 chanter, 57 Wizzie, and 55 Cleric in one and 54 Cleric, 55, Pally, High 50's rogue, 47 Shammy and a 40 something druid.

Some things about reavers:

You just can't cast on them. Our wizzie landed about one in 3 of his harder to resist lures. From what I understand, no one else even bothered trying. Bring a deck of cards, nukers.

They spawn 'something' when they drop. Either another reaver (yay!), Lord Ghiosk who aggros (not a big deal, tho lots of HP) or Lord Rak'Ashiir who doesn't (don't attack him, as word around the campfire is that he has some bad AE fire effect that melts everyone in sight)
My undertanding is that once you hit one of the Lords and finish or ignore it, the cycle is for sure over. I think there is also a slight chance it may just end on its own. We got 5 reavers in a row, which is apparently pretty rare, but 2 or 3 is not.

They proc blindness. And by this I mean, they proc blindness nearly continuously. The fight went on for 20 minutes or so, of which I spent around (actual best estimate) 18 minutes blind. One reaver death/re pop I missed completely and only stayed on the mob because he must have hit me and become my target. The only reason I was able to tank was that I had the 55 pally in the same room and would look over my shoulder at his screen and adjust position accordingly. At times both of our screens would be black at which point we'd just keep hitting the kick and taunt keys. The spooky part that I wasn't aware of until later was when one of the healers caught a bit of aggro and was blinded. She just went from memory on function keys to target me and went with a complete heal when she couldn't hang on any longer.

It certainly made for an interesting fight. However, w/o the blindness, not one that's a huge deal as long as you have smart and adequate tanking / healing.

Coming up with a way to deal with blindness is something we'll be playing with on future trips (Crap buff / Cancel magic, perhaps). We will be going back as this was a good time and we have a few folks who need stuff from this zone in the guild.

What is the minimum lvl and group size, to take on reavers, can it be done with one 55+ group?
RE: the impossible?
# Jul 18 2002 at 11:55 AM Rating: Excellent
55+ should be easy. We have taken on reavers successfully with the following group.

52 Enchanter
51 Warrior
51 Ranger
51 Druid
51 Rogue
51 Cleric

We can kill 3 back to back before Druid must evac us. Then we remed, rebuff and repeat. No JR yet but we still working on it.

Uradawg and make sure not to flame (if it was a flame)unless they deserve it, bards get pick lock at forty but max out at 100 in skill in all the references I have seen. 100 in skill is not enough to pick the locks in CoM. I have talked to many rogs that were working real hard to get to 200 to pick the lock here in CoM. :)

If I was guessing I imagine that is why he made a reference to rogs and discluded bards.

Just a logical guess.

My guild is looking to have a raid on CoM to try and get a few jade reavers for druid/ranger epics. Does anybody have any suggestions on what size group, what kind of classes are best to hold a raid on the reavers? We have never raided there before and have heard that the reavers are Really tough mobs. Also if anyone has any good proven tactics that they have used to camp reavers that would be really great info as well. Thanks everyone
RE: any suggestions
# Jun 09 2002 at 10:38 PM Rating: Excellent
We just started raiding here as well and we make out just fine all the way to the end of the sky way with two groups of 50+

Group 1

FD Puller - Monk we use a 51, 53 or 57 for this
Melee - Best to use a Warrior with gobs of HPs
Melee Assist - Rangers, Paly, Wars, Sk's anyone that can swing a sword
Chanter
Cleric
Rogue

Group 2

Druid
Melee
Cleric
Whatever
Whatever
Whatever )

Wolf Form and Sows work here and it is best to 'hire' a FD puller that has been here before and send your own puller with him to 'learn' the ways before attempting the Throne room and walkways yourself.

Else get a nec in zone for your skyway corpse recoveries

We just raided CoM last night, a nice tactic that worked, clear the lower level, and go inside to the hallway to the left. Theres a small room at the corner, and your FD puller can bring his little train down from upstairs into the hallway, FD, and let the mobs walk off.

Me as the person with the longest ranged bow, got to tag the last one to leave, and we'd proceed to grind it down.

We cleared the upper rooms safely, and pretty fast for our groups. (Levels 44, to 56) then the reavers. The first 4-5 didn't even respawn. The last one did, and with a vengance.

He spawned about 10 times, and since we were cleric poor, OOM was pretty fast that night, but the upshot being, 3 jade reavers, almost unheard of from 15 BR.

What's a good way for a group to pull these if they don't have a rogue to pick the lock? I hear people saying that they pull them through the doors. How exactly would I go about doing that?
Also, what's the minimum size group that could do a raid on the reavers? Any helpful info would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Im 49 rogue and picked this lock tonight with a 200 skill and no + % tools. The CoM doors require a 200 skill which a rogue can get at least at lvl 40.
RE: Doors for reavers

I can second this fact. We had a 200 skill rogue with no + % tools pick this lock as well. He thinks Verant might have changed the requirment to pick this door. He has a 60 lvl rogue on another server and remembers his skill had to be 201 many moons ago. However, as of 6/02 this is no longer the case.

4 of us were camping the Wraith of Jaxion (for Enchanter Epic) and we were nuking the wraiths/goos/skels from the safe point. Somehow, the Black Reaver that spawns in Neh'Ashiir's Platform managed to drop down on us. He started beating on our mage, we did one quick heal, ran to zone and the mage gated.

Just thought I should warn everone that this is possible in case they try the same tactics.

Did a reaver raid tonight. I cast my entire 54level worth of spells at these things and nothing stuck. No immune messages, just all resisted. I tried from mele range, my procs were all resisted too - chaotic feedback and vamp embrace. ALL dots bounced as did DD; I tried fire, cold, disease, poison and magic resists. On hella resistance for not being "immune" like some mobs are.
Chain Spawns
# Mar 07 2002 at 10:49 AM Rating: Decent
Led a raid to CoM on 3/1, we killed 10 black reaver spawns (about 20 reavers total) with no jade reavers dropping.

From my experience, a 1 in 10 drop rate for the jade reaver is about average, so I believe we were just unlucky.

It seems only 3 of the reavers chain pop... the one in the throne room just inside the keep (Lord Ghiosk, KoS), the center reaver in the back room at the top of the lift (Lord Rak'Ashiir), and the sky level reaver which is often skipped due to the hassle of getting to him (Lord Neh'Ashiir).

The other 3 black reavers at the top of the lift do not appear to chain spawn, and will simply spawn a phantom when they die.

We left Lord Rak alone when he popped, as he was not KoS, and when we killed his set of reaver PH a 2nd time, it spawned nothing after the typical reaver run... which leads me to believe only 1 Lord Rak can be up at a time. I have heard, however, that several Lord Ghiosks can be up simultaneously but can't confirm that. My 2cp

I was able to land Ro's Fiery Sundering on these guys about 1/5 of the time (on same reaver), which is fairly bad considering that it's lure based, however since it is a semi-major Fire debuff, I was also able to do some damage with fire based nukes afterwards (since I was only level 43 when I went though I was only hitting for about 15 points of damage, lol)

Also, the reason that these crappy axes sell for 15-30k (blah ripoffs) is because they are used in the druid and ranger epic quests. If it were not, it would indeed be worth a lot less (I personally wouldn't pay more than 300 for it since a blade of xalgoz or mithril 2hander is better weapon-wise and those sell for a max of 500 nowadays)

because, at least on Vazaelle, people can hunt CoM for months and not get one...and they are used in epics. So, they are RARELY sold, and when they are sold, people ask a huge amount for them.

In all the raids we have done on the Reavers, I have never seen an axe drop. At best, a Partisan dropped, and maybe a spell, but no axe :( Just keep in mind, if you raid these, and get a jade reaver, do your friendly druid/ranger a favor and let them have it for their epic :)
