It's a negative 150 VS faction hit when you kill Captain Rottgrime:

Killed this guy solo today on Ragefire (60 mage) utilizing most of the tactics described by Maaj in the post below. I couldn't get the eye to appear on the other side of the wall when cast, but it can run into the outpost past the cliff golem without aggro, so it's still easy to target Rottgrime while you stand safely in the alchemist alcove. Note that you've got to have your face planted pretty firmly in the wall to be in annul magic range. The first thing he'll do is proc the icebone frost on you, angering your faithful servant, but just call him off and keep running away from the outpost til you're safely out of range of Rottgrime's buddy the cliff golem. Takes maybe 10 secs for him to pop through the wall and start beating on you. Greater Vocaration: Earth pet can't solo him without a couple helpful Seeking Flames of Seukor, of which Rottgrime resisted one of the 5 I cast.

Well - it was a little tricky for me a 70 mag soloing this named. I had to clear out the golem and named general that roam the front and then med. I was able to target him behind the bank, cast a nuke and as soon as I knew it landed, run toward the pok book, he does summon but I just kept running until I had him and his pack safely out of the fort. Using pet hold was important here - didn't want my pet to be stuck with the pack in the fort. Then I continued to nuke the Captain while my pet held the pack. I killed the captain, looted, and zoned. - took myself and my pet down to 20+% of health, fully buffed, but I soloed it at 70.
Duoed with 55 Mage and 55 Rogue

I was able to duo this with my 55 Rogue tanking (lol) and my friend's 55 mage pulling.

This was an interesting combat as we did not intend to fight the captain at the time we did. We had just got the Mage Epic piece for my friend in BW and were thinking of how we could pull the Captain out without his entourage. He tried to pull him once, but brought everyone.

What he did next was invised and manoevered his way past the golem at the gate (timing him properly, as he moves from one side to the other). At this point, I had logged out with my Rogue, but what happened next was he cast Malo on the Captain, and was able to pull just him straight out of the outpost! He pulled him over past the PoK book and sent his Earth Pet in. Realizing that he wasnt going to do it alone, I logged back in as my Rogue and zoned back from PoK to the Overthere as fast as I could.

I joined the combat and popped both my counterattack and deadeye disciplines and tanked him while his Earth Pet off-tanked. I read somewhere that this guy was resistant to spells but, my Mage friend was able to land a number of nukes on him. We were doing really good, even though I was near death he was at about 5% health when out of no where, the Dragoons who wander about started to jump on my ***. I died quickly and then they went after my friend. The key to remember is that the pet is still womping on the captain as he was running like a scared little girl. About 5 seconds before he zoned, the pet killed the captain, even though at that time we did not know it. We actually thought we left him with 1 or 2% health.

I headed straight back to the Overthere after my death and went for my body, at which point I saw the corpse of Captain Rottgrime right by me!

We realized that somehow, the pet managed to kill him. We went back into our logs and saw that this was true, and my friend managed to get his item. I never thought for a million years that we could duo him, but we did it.

If you look into the outpost from the pok book side he is to the left, behind the bank close to the south wall, he stands infront of a line of skeletons.

Going to try this with my 55 mage.

All great information, but where the #$*&% is this guy? i've been running around the outpost for about an hour now (KOS) and have yet to see him. Everyone says he wanders between the marines and workers, but the only one i've seen wander was a marine....

South of the bank with the row of undead marines. He may wander, but that's where I found him.
KOS Monks
# Jan 27 2005 at 5:49 PM Rating: Decent
For all the KOS monks out there that want VS faction, I found a way to be able to do the turn in even if you are KOS (and yes, I tried doing it with DE potion and it didn't work).

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not but what I did was FD right next to Captain Rottgrime's path in front of the marines.

When he stops at one of the ends of the line of marines, I put 1 braid on the cursor, turn on sneak and quickly stand up and click him. As soon as the trade window is open I FD again. As soon as that is done you can then calmly put the 4 braids in the trade window and receive faction.

This process is a bit risky since the marines can rapidly take a lvl 55 monk with virtue from 100% to 50% if FD fails, but if you just use your head a bit I'm sure you'll also figure out some ways to minimize the time you are standing.

One other thing I found that helps to be able to open the trade window before all the marines jump on you is to have someone that isn't kos hail the captain so you can then stand up and click him.

The Easy Way
# Jan 20 2005 at 12:39 PM Rating: Decent
This is a mixture of other people's postings, but this is how I did it easily. Myself, a 61 magician went with a 68 magician. Yes, overkill, but that's who happened to come along with me. At night, when there were fewer adds, I walked into the outpost and targetted Rottgrime, because I am not KOS. The other mage is KOS, so he needed me to do this so he could /assist me. He then went around the back wall behind Rottgrime and tagged him with Annul Magic and ran around wide towards the PoK stone. Out came Rottgrime with his six undead marines. When he zoned, the marines started walking back, while Rottgrime stood still for a moment. I immediately hailed him while he was standing still. This is important, because if you hail him while he's already walking back, he won't stop, but simply answer you while he walks. If you get him standing still, the moment your puller zones, he will stand there and talk. The other mage came back in, we sent our pets in and nuked him to death with fire spells. Very easy. I got the Tears, and my faction went nowhere...going from dubious to dubious. The trick to this simply pulling him alone. If you can't get a monk to FD pull him way out into the fields for someone non-KOS to hail him, then you can simply get someone brave with SoW to tag him and run for the PoK stone while you hail him. Otherwise, he is an absolute piece of cake. You could probably solo him in the 50's, but I recommend just bringing a few friends since he is right by the PoK stone, so nobody can complain about a long trip.

Killing Captain Rottgrime for the Tears of Erollisi

After reading most of the recent posts and several painful mistries, I was able to solo Captain Rottgrime as a level 56 mage to get my "tears" for the mage epic.

My problem was in solo pulling. Even at night I would get the 6 "an undead marine"s tagging along. But once I figured it out, it was a fairly easy solo pull and kill.

I also found a new technique that helps mages in targeting.

First, you must wait until after 10:00 PM game time or you will get unwanted adds. A careless level 70 player who tried to help me, was sent running for the pok book with 20% health because he added several mobs running out the front door in the day. And since I was carelessly close, I got summoned and did not make it to the pok book.

Here's what worked for me:

From the pok book Go to +2492,+1951 (avoiding the Golem at Fort entrance) in The Overthere. You will be on the outside of the Fort wall in a nook. Sometimes there was a low level Alchemist in this spot that was an easy kill. Put your face to the wall and summon your Eye of Zomm. It will come up on the other side of the wall (this is great for looking past locked doors too). Move the Eye up a little and target Captain Rottgrime.

Now after you have him targeted, move straight back away from fort to get well out of agro range and park your pet there. Move forward again just enough to cast Annul Magic (after 10 PM game time) on Rottgrime from the spell's maximum range. As soon as the spell hits him (even if it is resisted), MOVE BACK to your pet. Have sow up and be ready to run to the pok book if you get adds.

I think the key to avoiding adds was 1) to fight at night; 2) park the pet away from the fort and 3) to move away as soon as I have cast the pulling spell.

I had my level 51 earth pet buffed with Elemental Empathy, Cadeau of Flame, Virtue, FoS and a nice pink heart. He was fully armored and had 2 high level summoned weaps. I had my focus gear on, as well as a Ceramic Totem for Improved Healing IV (to better heal pet). My magic resists were over 200. And of course, I had C3.

Once I got the Captain on a single pull, it was a fairly easy fight and I did not have to recast the pet. Scars of Sigil landed pretty well. Malosi never landed once in all my pulls/tries so I wouldn't bother with it.

I am told the tears drop with every kill. They dropped for me. As a High Elf mage I did not care about any faction hit, but be aware that people you might ask to help you may not want the faction hit as it can spoil an unrelated quest turn-in.

Good Luck.

I followed your guide and basically it worked! TY :)

All the marines were added to my aggro list, but i kept moving away and they would fall off but the captain would stay on. I tried twice and moved around a lot trying to get him to come out of the walls.

When he finally came out, somehow a gargoyle added but it wasn't hard since I had a 60 sham/clr/mag. I think rottgrime could be soloed with a 60 mage on TLP.

Also I just used /target captain instead of the eye. worked fine

Thanks for the guide!

Just took him out two boxing with a 59 bard (I'm a 49 mage). Used focused 49 earth pet with bazaar toys (mask, girdle, blade, and fist), plus full plate and focus gear. Other then that just DS and BO3. Bard single pulled and I sat on horse with KEI and chain healed pet. Bard pumped mana and occasionaly jump in to melee. I ran out of mana and pet poofed, but by then capt was at 9% and ran, bard finished him off. Got my tears =)

Thanks to the info here, I pulled the Captain EASY. Im a 65 DE mage and working on my last 3 pieces. This was one. I had a SoE on and parked my 65 earth pet on hill near the Alchemist. Twinked him with gear and buffs.

I waited till the goons left the outpost (10pm game time). Targeted the captain and ran out of the outpost on the POK book side. When the golem was on the right, I ran to where the Alchemist was ( sorry he had to go ) and casted Anull magic. Then ran back to pet and waited. About 10 seconds later, here comes the captain.

He is HIGHLY magic resistant, could not stick any damage spells on him so I just kept healing pet with Plannar Renewal.. I had to heal about 5 or 6 times. By then the Captain was at 12 pct health and running..

Pet finished him off and I got my epic piece.

My faction went from a high Amiable to indifferent with 1 kill. So be careful.

I found out a strategy with an enchantress friend. What I'd do is Invis , run in, get aggro from him, the enchantress would be way far out , I run to enchantress, she mezzes rottgrime, we both run for book, zone in, get aggro, mez, mem wipe, sneak, turn in. This has been working for me for a while, still not dubious though :(
Easy Way to Pull Rottgrime
# Dec 04 2003 at 11:17 AM Rating: Excellent
A mage in my guild needed this guy taken out last night. We tried having our monk FD pull him, but everything in the fort aggro'd on the monk and would not leave him alone, no matter how many times he FD'd. Eventually he had to zone to break aggro. We were worried we would be there all night trying to get Rottgrime to come out of the fort. So, here's the strategy we came up with:

1) Have your raid party stand out in the field directly in front of the big opening in the outpost. They should be reaaaally far away.

2) Have someone log on a non-KOS character (I used my lvl 41 Cazic-Thule Troll Shaman). The non-KOS person should stand about 1/2 way between your raid party and the outpost entrance. This is because these mobs have a GIANT aggro range. And I mean HUGE.

3) Have your monk SOW'd and buffed, and get him/her to run into the fort, target the captain, and then run out with everything in tow and then FD in front of your non-KOS person.

4) Have your non-KOS person assist (turn /assist off so you don't attack when you do it) on the monk and then hail Captain Rottgrime over and over. The Captain will stand there and have a nice conversation with your non-KOS person while all of his friends walk calmly back to their places in the Outpost because the guy who aggro'd them appears to be dead, and they don't care about him anymore.

5) If Rottgrime is still too close to the outpost for comfort, just have your monk stand up and smack him again, then run a little further away and start hailing him again to keep him nailed to the spot.

6) Now, have your monk stay FD and get the raid party over to beat the snot out of Captain Rottgrime.

This worked perfectly last night and was super easy. It ended up taking us only a few minutes.

PERFECT!

I ((Sk)) died three times trying to FD pull him for our Mage. Finally, I decided to see what else people ahd done. This worked great. He did walk away after hailing a bit, but the Sk just stood up, tagged him, and dragged him back.

The battle point was a large rock directly east of the gate by the book. The FD/pull point was just in front of that. About 30 steps, or so.

I tried hailing him, but, although he said his little speech about the shipyard now and again, he still turned and walked back to the Outpost as I was hailing him. Eventually we had to kill the Golem to stop it adding and then our SK pulled Rottgrime solo.

I tried repeating parts of what Rottgrime said, but nothing produced a response. Do you need to be indifferent or better to get him to talk to you?

Incidentally, at 52 he resisted my Magic-based nukes and resisted Char intermittently, but one of the Chars did hit for full damage. So his magic resist seems a lot higher than his fire resist.

As a level 47SK I was able to single pull Captain Rottgrime using Siphon Strength by simply running into the fort, targeting him, and then running outside the walls and spamming the cast button on Siphon Strength until I got in range.

I had my raid force South East about 200 yards away from the Outpost.

How To Duo

Hello. About a month ago I wanted to get a head start on my epic, so I got my brother's help and we attempted to kill the Captain with two. My brother is a 65 Bard, and I logged on my 56 Druid.

My brother single pulled by doing the following. He used his Dark Elf illusion mask to become non K.O.S. Then he ran in and lulled everything. The marines next to the captain do not have to be lulled. Then he targeted the Captain and ran out past the golem and along the side where the Alchemist spawns (so that you cannot see any mobs, but the Captain is on the other side of the wall right next to you.) He then casted a dispell on the Captain. The Captain will nuke several times and then come out alone. We pulled it out a ways to be safe and then my brother just kept running it in circles and dotting until it died. He was summoned very often, so I had my druid there to heal every so often. I did not have K.E.I., so the healing is not a big factor, just a small part. The fight took about 10-15 minutes, and a lot of the bard's dots were resisted. After he died I logged on my mage and looted the tears, which always drop.

I hope this helped. If you try and something comes with the Captain, zone into P.O.K. and zone immediately back into The Overthere. The Captain just may still be standing there, without the add. Good luck :)

I was able to pull him solo. The best way to do this is to run inside the fort (invis if you are KoS) and target him. Run outside the fort and make a right. Stand in a corner where Alchemist Granika spawns (kill him first if necessary). With the captian still targeted cast some NON-DAMAGE debuff (cancel magic worked great for me). You WILL get hit with some ice spells. Run back toward your friends (or pet) and wait a few seconds. The capt came running out of the fort all ALONE. Send in pet and/or have your friends beat on him until he goes down. Not a real hard fight.

Make sure you do this at night so the goons are not around and the golem can be dealt with in 2 ways. One is to have him killed (obviously) or have a SOWed person run up and hit him with some range weapon and run to the FM or WW zone. The other way is a little more difficult, make sure he is on the right side of the entrance (he walks back and forth) and he may not agro.

The party of guilies I had was all 50+. We had me (mage), cleric, 2 bards, wizzy and necro (MT). Good luck and happy hunting.

I read in here that using Essence of Dark Elf would give you the faction to turn in the braids...I tried this today as a human agnostic monk with "Threatening" faction, and it DID NOT WORK. I still conned threatening after using the potion and could not do the turnins. Pulling him between 10pm and 6am is, however, very easy. All his friends wander away while he stands there in front of you. Now I guess I just need to get a chanter there to charm him after I pull him so I can turn in the braids.

Gadiaton, how did you lose your OT faction? My agnostic human monky started out apprehensive. Now the Capt'n loves him!
I use my OT hammer all the time, so I can visit the locals in the Outpost and have a quick/handy PoK book nearby.

An agnostic human monk should start with apprehensive faction at the Outpoast and with Capt'n Rottgrime. But, as always, con something before you go in (like the Cliff Golems ~ it's easy to find 'em).

OK, this guy is SIMPLE. Here's wat I did, had a 22 SK, 57 necro and me, 55 Mage. Me and Necro guarded pets at the PoK Book, and we waited until night. Once at nite, necro kamikazied his pet into cliff golem and got goons also. Once he ran off with cliff golem and goons, necro pulled the captain. From here, he told pet to back off and SPAMMED it since this ******* can nuke, from there, we stuck our pets. My first pet went down at 75%, his went down at 60, mine at 40, his at 30, mine at 15, and then Captain killed him. Only reason he got aggro was b/c he tried to slow. From here it was my pet, got Captain down to 10%, then went down, and he summons so i couldnt chain, i almost done and he summoned me, so we zoned. We re-did this after and he didnt attempt to slow, it was cake. Well, good luck to all mages.

We took him down with 55mag,51monk,61mag,and 58cleric. The first time we pulled during the day. We got Dragoon adds but we succeeded. Second time we pulled at night got no adds.

Cast Invis. on yourself run to the entrance of city turn left there he is. Target him run outside the wall where the wall begins to make a corner, cast nullify or cancel magic on him and run back to your group. It would be good to have your grp up on a little hill just behind the pull spot. About 100yds from the wall. He will eventually pop on top of the puller. So make sure everyone has assisted him before pulling. If you do this at night I can attest that earlier posts of a successful single pull will work. Happy Epic'in Mages!

My lvl 56 mage friend and i (60 ranger) went to go take him on for his epic... the easiest way to pull him is have someone target him then assist to get him targeted then run outside the wall where he is outside of outpost.. wait till its dark so General D'bunghole wont come play load up a canel magic and cast it on him. it will single pull him everytime. You also must time your pull with the golem then just run out and kill the sucker. Rott himself is almost immune to all spells. i was unable to land root snare and fire cold nukes... my mage friend couldnt land malaise or any of his nukes. in the end his pet just tanked i arrowed and jumped in from time to time to help pet out. Then mage would have to CoH me away to break agro so his pet could get agro again.

Hope this helps.
