I have been soloing these at 16 with Fear-Darkness-DoT strategy. I was at full health when done and 1 bubble of mana left. just make sure to re-cast fear and Darkness since they will drop quickly. med in between and let your pet skelly do the work. Since at 16 they are yellow and white for me, they make for great xp solo. Yet another reason why Necros rock.
I am glad I decided to drop in and read this...My brother has a 17 barb warrior and we saw one of these things, after all the times A griffin has killed me, any relation that cons blue needs to die :) But we got distracted and let it go...I am VERY glad i read how tough these @#%$@# were! thanks guys! this is what forums are for!
I am a level 19 magician, and I solo'd one in NK. Both my water pet and myself survived. Pet had burnout and fire shield. At the end, i had full life, but less than 1 bbl of mana. Just be careful.
griffawns can easily solo almost all other mobs up to 5 levels above them, for instance, my 15th druid charmed a blue griff and it killed a scythe beetle that was red to me and 2 even to me borers, not all at once, but in a row with out a break. Nice nice pets but be wary when charm breaks ...
Starting at level 14, a druid can just snare, Stinging Swarm, and fear them. Then sit down and meditate. When fear wears off (and now it even tells you when SS wears off), just reapply.
Another tactic is to charm them and have them attack other things. Not suggested for the charismatically challenged races though. :) When they are low on hp, break charm by hiding and then finish them off.
Look, im a druid, since lvl 14 i've been soloing theese adn when tha it stoo slow i groupw ith ONE person, no tank, but a caster. I sow and al i do is dot and run and if wiz they nuke and too eay! just panic/fear and snare and they are yours!
Griffawns have conned blue to me since 14, and they still con blue to me at 16. (Barbarian Shaman). I just soloed one for the first time. I casted root which this time was not resisted and then did a manna burn on Spirit Strike. He was pretty much gone when the manna wore off. Even at less than 10% health, he was kicking my butt. By the time the battle was over, I had no manna and two bubbles of health. They are tough!
I solo these guys with my level 16 wizard, how about that? Root then nuke with Bolt of lightning at will.
A SoW did save my life quite a few times though, when they resist they resist for a lot and they will claw you good with those last 6 pixels of their health...
I solo Griffawns pretty easily..just Darkness, Send Pet (if SOWed run and DOT/DOT/DOT I usually Heart Flutter/Heat Blood/Leach and send in the Pet...then just FEAR it..and sit down and enjoy the sow..if fear fails just walk away from it...and let the pet beat it since it WILL be aggro to you after multi-dots.
Hey...level 17 wizzy here.My tactic for these is simple. And Ive never died doing this.Number one...please don't try to solo these things as a caster,or otherwise...only Druids can easily solo em.Snare,Fear vs Animals, and then they lay into em with spells.Best way to do a fight with these(oh,and they range from lev 14-17.Ive had em con gamble at 16.Have your tank be a cleric. He can heal, and if need be,'Divine Aura' himself to InvulnTank for 20 secs. While he pulls with a Smite, and runs to the wizzy, the wizzy tosses a root. Now that the thing is rooted,Cler tosses nukes, and wizzy(sow'ed)tosses Flame Shock, and SoLightning. It'll die in about 4-5 nukes.Good loot, and coin.
I am a level 20 warrior, and these critters are green or blue to me. I have my melee skills maxed out, AC around 500 and a GZ.... I only score a hit on these guys, like 2 out of 10 times... They are VERY bad news.
16-21 bard can solo with Griffawn but you need SoW and use Bellow song lots of the time OR Selo's Acceleration and Bellow song 2 times and back to selo and so on. <hates those>
I agree with Dumarr that these creatures are much more powerful than others of their level. In a group of three at level 16 (ranger, bard and monk) the griffawn coned blue (probably 14th or 15th). My points: (1)We could not taunt the griffawn off its first target (monk). We had one of us die and two with full HPs. If you can't solo one don't even try with a group. (2) Any "grif__" variety will join in to help its winged cousin/sibling.
I doubt they are 13-16 but if they are they hit VERY hard for their lvl, have a high magic resist, and require a magic weapon to be hit. Also be sure not to confuse then with Griffenes or Griffons it hurts :)
21st level Wizard, I don't have too much trouble with them, but at 20th level they were difficult to keep Rooted. Decent loot, tho, & seem to be good exp, too.
I'm a 24th lvl Paladin, and these things are green to me. Having said that, do NOT fight them alone! I've got decent armor, and these things mop the floor with me solo (20-50 dmg per hit, and lots of double hits). They drop decent loot though - their feathers are stackable, and are worth good cash.
With a earth pet chain casting root, you can easily roast black and yellow griffawns from 16 to 20. Great exp ok cash and the feathers are for the magician Air focus item.
Just be certain you drop a fire shield on your pet, if you forget you'll likely die :(.
I am a lvl 17 Wizard and i think they are very good exp. As long as I have SoW and good amount of mana I run and blast them with a Lightning Bolt, hardly resisted.
Man, have you not been reading all these messages?!?!?! The main gist is that Griffawns CANNOT be meeleed until they are way green. It seems to be that they are difficult to hit, yet they hit fast and furious. How about you read everything on a board before you go and make some dum comment. Don't you all hate those peeps who put in a query at the top of a board, and if they had taken the millicalorie of energy scrolling down the page requires, they would have got more information than they could have ever asked for? All these people sharing tips, experiences, tricks, goods spots! People, scroll on down! PLEASE!
Don't know about the solo-ability of a ranger, but myself as a 22nd level magician with a burned out water pet armed with a single spear of warding can take out the highest levels ones with two bubbles of mana 100% of the time assuming no other MOBs in area (dang kitties).
I am level 21 wizard on the Erollisi Marr server. Get a SoW from a druid, or have the Jboots. Root it then cast your spell. If it resists just keep running away from it, and casting spells. As long as you have SoW or Jboots, you will outrun it. Just remember which direction your going, you might wanna know where the nearest guard tower is, in case anythign goes wrong.
My name is Ohkay and I am a 17 wizard on druzzil ro, and these things are not that hard for a wizard to kill, but I belive that the exp differance is not large as compared to a beetle of equal level, and they hit much harder. Killing bugs however gets old quick and the loot stinks, Fawns on the other hand have coin and other things that sell for a little bit of cash. I have yet to be killed trying to solo these Guys, wait till at least 16th level, when you get lighting bolt, and invis. Med up, cast invis. so that the bears and lions leave you alone. Then move out into the plains find a fawn all by itself, pull it from as far back as you can with Lighting bolt, root it and nuke away, if it breaks or resisted the root don't run, cast root again untill it holds, back away and kill it. then invis yourself and head to spires to med. Thats what works for me anyway.
