I had a cyclops appear in the cycle...Got very lucky using Zarovich strategy to the T, had 2 Quills back to back spawn and 2nd one dropped my cloak! Thanks Z!

I had not done this in a while and it took me 3 hours to get the correct place holder. Got him to spawn 8 times in the next 3 hours and my rogue now has a clicky lev.
I tried messing with the mobs that tracked from the SE or SW to splitpaw but those ended up spawning other names. When I waited for the mob to track from south that was the one on Quillmanes cycle.
Making me angry

Spent 7 hours now camping this mob and I have nothing to show for it ... not even a PH. Tried pulling everything and ae nuking it to death and waiting 78 seconds for about 3 hours and got nothing. Then for the past 4 hours i have been sitting south of Paw and killing any thing that paths by and then checking track 78 seconds later. No PH not even a dumb luck quillmane spawn.
Works like a charm!

Just had to post here because I got my cloak tonight using my level 30 Druid, who conned even to Quillmane everytime. The 78 second spawn is for real. The toughest part is figuring it out. I got lucky and Quillmane spawned, dropped legs. Waited 78 seconds and killed An Elephant. Another 78 seconds and killed a lion. Another 78 and Quillmane spawned again and dropped the cloak. Logged my mage who was in the zone. Kudos to the guy that came up with this puzzle.
2 Hours, 10 Quills, 3 Cloaks !!!

Thanks to Zarovich, I am the proud owner of a new cloak.

It took me two hours with two trackers and a stopwatch application on my laptop. In that span of time we killed Quillmane 10 times and looted 3 cloaks. Mages the world over can rejoice!

Quillmane has now been upgraded to a farmable spawn.

2 hours and 10 Quills in not the defacto standard. This mob is completely random but the cycle in and of itsself is "EXACTLY" as Zarovich posted in his original post. Follow his original post "to the letter" and you too will have a cloak of your own. Deviate from it and you are just wasting time. I know, as I have tried to do what he stated, my own way, and I got nothing.

Now, I have the Kavorka!

As it is said before, spawning quillmane the first time is the hard part. After you get her up once you can keep getting her. Just make sure no one else is killing in the zone and have a tracker. After Quillmane kill only kill the new mob that spawns on track. Should always be on top. I made a list of mobs that seemed to be a ph for quillmane. If you just kill these over and over you will eventually get Quillmane. List may be incomplete

Treant Mistwolf Lioness Lion An Elephant Centaur Sheltie An Escaped Splitpaw Gnoll Aviak Darter

I am sure there are more out there. I did notice that the regular gnolls are not at all in the spawn cycle.

Another comment I wanted to add was about my experience. I was there with a druid and a Mag trying to get the cloak. After 4 hrs we got a quillmane to spawn. Zone was empty other then us so for the next 20 mins we get 2 more quillmanes <leggings of course>. After that a shaman came in and we begged him to stay and kill in north of zone as to not confuse us with the ph. He agreed. 90 more minutes and 5 more quillmanes. No cloak. After that a 2 boxer logs in and just starts butchering things were we were. We begged him to stop and told him we been camping this place for hours and asked if he could move north. His response was he didnt care if he messed us up cause us getting the cloak does not affect him at all. We left Sk after that because we got so annoyed. Please if you read this post realize that other ppl are playing the game. The reason you care if someone else gets what they need is you will never know if you will raid/group with that character.
I hate people who play online games and have the "Im the only one who is important" complex.
Hope my post helps.

RE: My take on Quillmane
# Jan 16 2006 at 4:20 AM Rating: Decent
Every time I've camped Quillmane people have moved in and started killing in the south end of the zone, but luckily I'd already found Quill's cycle so it didn't cause a fatal problem. If you haven't found the cycle and people are killing in the south I'd suggest coming back when the zone is empty, but if you're already working the cycle and people move in, don't get discouraged, just concentrate a bit harder. It's definitely more of a pain, but not impossible (and preferable to having to come back to find the cycle again).

To do this it's best to have a timer [link=http://www.keir.net/timer.html that counts seconds(I know this sounds obvious, but I've heard of people just pushing track 8 times to measure 78 seconds). As soon as you kill the PH start your timer and head back to your tracking point. Then click "tracking" at 69 seconds and take note of the mob on top and click track immediately when it comes up again, which should be at 79 seconds (one second after new spawn). I realize that this gives a 10 second window for non-placeholders to show up on track along with the actual PH, but chances are the PH is on top due to it having spawned only 1 second before. Everytime I got more than one new mob on track I would take note of both mobs and kill the one on top first. If it didn't trigger a spawn that fit the Quillmane cycle criteria, I would have just killed the other I had taken note of. However the PH was always at the top of the list in my experience.

As far as placeholders are concerned I can confirm the following:

1) No other names share Quill's cycle
2) The only gnoll on the cycle is "an escaped splitpaw gnoll" not to be confused with "a Splitpaw gnoll" which I have never seen as a PH
3) "A treant" can be (which sucked for my ranger's faction), but is NOT ALWAYS a PH

I've had as placeholders:

All types of elephants, centaurs, aviaks, as well as a lion, a lioness, a mist wolf, a shadow wolf, and a treant. Nothing else, but that's just my experience.

Spawned Quillmane 25 or so times - 6 cloaks - 8 hours (including finding the cycle). Equals roughly 1 cloak per 4 Quillmanes for me, but they do come in spurts. Example: Quill (cloak), Quill (cloak), wolf, aviak, Quill (cloak)... then no Quill for almost 2 hours, and no cloaks for next 8 Quillmanes.

Found a link for this timer [link=http://www.keir.net/timer.html on another post. To use it, download it, open it and when it's open right click, go to Program Options and check the box "Always on top". Now it will be on top of your EQ window while EQ is in windows mode (haven't tried it in full mode). Also in Program Options choose the ss:ms option when using with the Quillmane cycle. Simply left-click to start and left-click to stop. Once it is stopped, clicking it again will reset and start it running again.

-By the way, I use the North/South highway method to find the cycle. Thank you to person/people who figured it out and posted it.

Good luck to you all. May the Beautiful Pegasus burn in Hell.

Just wanted to back up this info and say that I have gotten quillmane to spawn several times now... The mobs that act as placeholders are mainly as follows: a lion, a lioness, a mist wolf, a shadow wolf, and an escaped splitpaw gnoll. I spawned quill over 6 times in about 4 hours so it can be done.. Over that time span, all the above mentioned mobs spawned as placeholders 95% of the time. 1-treant, 2-aviak egrets, and 1-centaur courser also were placeholders during my camp.. hope this helps.. cheers

TRied this strat and it seemed to be going very well at first then all the placeholders listed weren't on track anymore I ran all over the rntire zone and couldn't find not one of these mobs so ther emust be another mob on the PH list anyone have any clue as to what it might be?
Thanks for the strat!!!
# Sep 23 2005 at 11:58 AM Rating: Decent
Strat still works well, but I agree the hardest part is finding Quill's PH - it took me forever and a day (this may have had something to do with the fact that I borrowed a ranger and had no clue how to track at first, as well as dealing with other people in the zone who were killing things as well). Eventually stumbled across it and popped Quill for the legs (seeing Quill on track about gave me a heart attack) - followed it through a couple more spawns and got my cleric the cloak.

Thanks for taking the time to write this up. I read through all of the posts, but found Zarovich, Aaewenx and Maaj's posts to be the most informative.

Followed the advice below on getting QM to spawn and it worked great. Went to -4725, -225 and created a label on my map so it would be easy to get back to. I got lucky and got the correct rotation on the first try. It included taking out 3 trants though but what the hey. First one took a good hour before QM spawned. Got legs so just kept going since I noted what time I killed QM so just killed the next mob that popped in 78 seconds. Next one popped in about 30 minutes and again 2 mobs later. Got him to pop a 4th time 20 minutes later and my mage got his cloak.
Many thanks for the info Zarovish!!!

Got lucky and actually saw Quillmane pop while killing zone, got her marked at -6030, 350, just northeast of the Aviak village. Dunno if this is her PH or if any mob is her PH.

Hope this helps.

Yes I should also express my thanks to Zarovich as his posts were the most helpful to me. I confirm that Mroon is on a 78 sec cycle. I spawned him last night. There is also a Marik Clubthorn that is on a 78 sec cycle. He spawned at SP and the gnolls fought and killed him before I could. Later, I found the Quillmane cycle, killed him twice and got another cloak so my ranger can float.

Yes, I can feel the Mages sobbing that this difficult epic item would be wasted on a ranger! But I would be happy to get you one or MQ it for a reasonable donation if you are on the Morrell Thule, soon to be Erollisi Mar server. Send an in-game e-mail to Eclat, Meash or Trakem.

Here is another post that is helpful mainly for its map. It is a precurser post to Zarovich and so as such is perhaps incomplete in its info. But the map is good.

Another thanks, Zaro's way worked perfect and took about 1.5 hours to get the first and only pop I needed for this much desired cloak.

After viewing the link above and without reading enough (and it seemed kinda complicated and I didnt bring a tracker), I just went and slaughtered everything in that oval area for 3ish hours each day last weekend and nothing.

Went back and read everything twice to make sure I understood everything and borrowed a friends ranger to run on a second box. Just killed things wandering through spires and then had the ranger check tracking every 78ish seconds. Wasnt sure I had the right one and took me over an hour to find it, but eventually I did. I think some of my difficulty was there were a couple of smallish groups killing things at aviaks and paw (luckily mostly statics).

Cant beleive someone solved what seems like a pretty complex way of spawning him but glad you did. Was neat to see it work and I kinda wanted to stay and get him to spawn some more but decided not to since he dropped it first kill.
RE: TY Zarovich and others

I want to add yet another thank you. Took about 1 hour before I saw "a lion" wandering straight north at the spires. I killed him and the 78 second spawns started

a lioness, a lion, a lion, 3 escaped splitpaw gnolls in a row, a lion, a lioness, Quillmane

He dropped the cloak the first time I popped him.

I had tried to get this every now and then for years and never even saw Quill. Thank you for posting great information.

Zarovich is Correct

I also need to post a testimonial to Zar's strategy (see below). Don't listen to any doubters out there.
The only thing that took time was finding the right 78sec mob cycle.
I did pretty much the same thing as Maaj.
I found my first 78sec cycle by grabbing a lion that came S through the spires. I confirmed that it's repops were 78secs by running to the location Maaj listed and checking track (my 51 ranger). I stayed onthat one for a while and noticed that they all popped East side of zone, some on the far East or SE edge. When Mroon popped on the cycle I abandoned it.
Went back to S ouf the spires and sat and waited. This was the only real time consuming part.
Killed a couple mobs that wandered near the spires that were not on a 78sec cycle.
Finally an Elephant wandered S through the spires and I killed him.
Ran to Maaj's point and 78sec later the cycle started.
I killed about 7 mobs before Quillmane popped and all 7 mobs actually popped in a narrow area - draw a line from the spires to the aviak village to Maaj's spawn point to the spires for a triangle and they all popped roughly in that area. It was a fairly small sample (6 mobs or so) so it may have just been chance.
Quillmane popped and dropped the leggings.
78sec later Quillmane popped again and dropped the cloak.
Then 2 PH.
Then Quillmane popped again and dropped the cloak again.
So, once I found the correct cycle, I had Quillmane 3 times in about 12 pops and got 2 cloaks. This equates to about 15-20 minutes or so.

All thanks to Zar (originally) and Maaj.

Quilmane for Cloak

Well I finally got the cloak for my 58 mage. Now I just need the Crown form Sky to finish the epic. LOL what a crock this epic has been!

Here's how I got my cloak.

After reading all of the other posts, I made a ranger and leveled him to 38 with a tracking skill of 195. At this level I was able to follow every pop and then kill Quillmane till I got it. I tried at 180 or 185 tracking skill but had difficulty following the cycle.

I got the cycle started by killing mobs that tracked N or S thru Splitpaw spires and then moved to -4725, -225 to wait for a pop after 78 secs. Once I got the cycle started I would always pull the mob back close enough to that "middle point" of the spawn area so that after I killed the mob, I could get to my spot before the end of the 78 seconds. From my spot at -4725, -225 my tracking was able to register every new pop in the cycle.

First I followed one 78 cycle for an hour that seemed to fit all the criteria. It spawned on both the left and right side but ended up spawning Crackbone. Since I knew there are no other named mobs on the Quillmane cycle I quite that cycle and started over. I should note that on the Crackbone cycle, the only difference I noticed between the Quilmane cycle and the Crackbone one, was that with the Crackbone cycle every once in a while there was a pop in the far NE section (N of the Hermit)of the "spawn zone". When this happened it was just outside of my tracking range and I would only pick it up by moving a bit to the North East from the spot I was tracking from. Also, 75% of the spawns on the crackbone cycle popped to the East or North East of my tracking spot. Very few popped to the West. When Crackbone appeared in the cycle, I did not kill him but instead started over and looked for a new 78 sec cycle. So if you see Crackbone up, DO NOT KILL HIM. He too appears to be on a 78 sec cycle in the same area as Quillmane. Perhaps someone else will confirm if they notice the same thing.

When I picked up another 78 sec cycle (after leaving Crackbone) it took me over 20 pops in the cycle and over 2 hours before i got my first Quillmane. I got 3 Aviaks in 5 pops so I was concerned for a bit that I had the wrong cycle. But then there were no more Aviaks in the cycle. The only difference I noticed with the earlier Crackbone cycle was that EVERY new pop on the Quillmane cycle for 2 hours was showing up on my track when I waited at -4725,-225. With the earlier Crackbone cycle, I had an occaissional "nopop" (from my "middle point")where I would have to move East slightly to register the new pop on my tracking. With the Quillman cycle I didn't have to move a bit from my spot to register the new pop on my tracking. Leaving Crackbone up got to be a little interesting as he wandered a couple of times close enough to agro me. He charges you on sight. So when I would look up and see a big Elephant named Crackbone charging toward me, I would take him a good distance away and root him before returning to continue the Quillmane cycle. Also there are a few caster gnolls to keep an eye out for, even though at level 38 they had a small agro range (I died once from attacking one that conned dark blue). Once Quillman popped, I killed Quillmane with my ranger (as opposed to logging to my Mage) so I would not loose the cycle. I am glad I did because there was no cloak! Then Quillmane popped again after 3 more mobs and it was before me: The Pegasus Feather Cloak! With trembling fingers I logged to my Mage who was camped at the same spot. When my Mage came on, the body of the flying horse was still warm and I had to wait before it would let me loot the cloak. By the time I got my ranger logged back on. more than 78 secs had elapsed and with other people killing in the zone I lost the cycle. I had planned to get an extra cloak for my ranger to reward him for his work.

This whole attempt took 4-5 hours in one sitting. First finding a 78 sec cycle, then realizing I had the Crackbone cycle, then finding another 78 sec cycle, keeping that cycle going nonstop for over 2 hours and ending with a couple of quick Quillmane pops for the cloak.

Previously I had killed Quillmane 5 times on other outings with other trackers, with no cloak drop.

My Mage is happy and my tracker has fufilled his destiny!

Thankyou to all of the others that have written helpful posts on this subject!

This is great info! Will put it to the test. But in my many many hours/days/weeks spent in this zone after Quill I have noticed something. Quill seems to sometimes chain spawn. I cant believe that its coincidence. It seems that this happens after Quill spawns in south part of zone and then after death sometimes, not always respawns in the middle and north parts. I personally saw him spawn on the hill directly east of spires, NE of spires and west of spires. I got my mages cloak on the 2nd spawn in a 3 spawn chain where he spawned somewhere NW of spires and was moving straight south on the hill side west of spires.
I heard shout from south by bird house that he spawned, started running down there and saw the corpse disappear barely in clipping range. Turned around and started running back toward paw all depressed and parked my gnomish **** on west hill. Considering if I should just give up, camp and do something constructive when I glanced back and screen only to see freakin Quillmane flying right in front of me! I killed and got cloak. Soon after that I heard a shout saying Quillmane up north of paw. Dident even bother to go look. Only heard of people shouting that he was in the north, never seen this myself.

Anyway, thanks for the info will try to get me cloak (or Fabled cloak) for my druid. :)

Well.. Got home from work and tried to test 74 second timer method. But zone had people in it killing stuff all over, so I couldnt really since mobs were popping left and right.

However, just my luck about 30 minutes after I got there Fabled Quill spawned in the valley north of bird house. My druid was sitting at the cords listed in the other post since it seemed fairly centralized and he could NOT track quill from there with 125 tracking. Seems he used to be able to track further.

Killed Fabled Quill fairly easy with 70 necro :) And druid got his cloak.

After I got it I was fairly disappointed cause I had heard Fabled Cloak was targetable Levetation but it is self only. >:(

Well, I've had my ranger in SK for a week straight now using these "strategies" and found that they don't work. The only time I've seen Quillmane was just after logging in and killing a few random mobs, none of which were walking north or south, and Quillmane was flying east away from Paw. Nobody else has been in the zone so I know nobody else killed the PH.

I'm beginning to belive the zone might have been changed when they revamped Paw and put its old mobs out in SK. From the postings here I would think the "strategies" listed would work some of the time, even by chance, but this isn't my experience.

I haven't resorted to the cheating method and don't think I should have to. With the advent of the higher epics I think this mob should be redesigned, at least to spawn more often even if the drop rate remains the same. Spending weeks or months of play time trying to find a low level mob is neither right or fun. Epic quests should be challenging, this is not, it's just frustrating and boring.

Our group consisting of 2 Rangers, 2 Druids, 1 Mage, 1 Monk killed everything in sight in a triangle consisting of Splitpaw-Aviaks-Hermit killing hundreds of mobs in fact anything that moved died and we found no way to make Quillmane spawn other then time alone. We killed it 4 times in 13 hours and it never dropped the cloak.

Quillmane spawned twice in about 60 minutes. Next kill was 5 hours. Last was 7 hours. There was a grp at splitpaw only killing those pesky gnolls. The zone was ours otherwise.

I realize this is an epic drop for Mages but it should be a little easier getting it to spawn.

Well the zone has not been changed. I did find another 78 second spawn that I did not find before. It also spawns on both south east and south west side but it's very easy to tell because every single mob in it spawns aviaks. A previous post from a guy pointed this out for me and he's right about it, it must be a new one added after paw got revamped. Nonethless just a few days ago I double-checked things and yep, Quill still spawns at 78 seconds on a PH that spawns both north and south side. I still have the best luck finding the PH by killing the mobs just south of Paw. Sorry you're having no luck but Quillmane's spawn has not changed, they just added a few more yard trash that you'll need to learn how to filter out.

i found there are couple more spawns with 78 secs, one will keep spawn Mroon / undead cyclops
another one will spawn avaik. another one will spawn mist wolf / lion / escaped gnoll , all at east wall. it comes more difficult to figure out which is the correct PH...
