killed Today at 8:15 aprox, GMT.

Droped cloak, used a tracker, and REspwan is true:

an elephant, espaped splitnow, liones, lion, aviak , centaur, some of them, and then PoP.

Over 2 hours camped or so, not too hard if you have tracker, if not is imposible.

The tricks to spawning this mob are all lies...
# Feb 09 2007 at 12:27 AM Rating: Decent
Tried them all, not a single spawn.

Killed entire zone for 1 month, got 62 spawns, thats basically 2 times a day.

And it is a utter lie it drops the stupid cloak. I have killed it upwards of 200 times, it ONLY drops the stupid leggings for me.

I have read all the threads on spawning Quillmane and as of yet found anything useful on the Bertoxxulous server; let alone a thread from anyone on Bertoxx. Are there any Bertoxx players that can shed some light on Ol' Quillmane for getting him to spawn? Please either respond to this thread here or to Wickedmistress 60 mage Bertoxxulous server.

Thank you.

You simply need to read posts, do what they suggest and it will happen. Z's post ( scroll down and reread it ) seems most accurate.

This was my results over 2-3 hours.

Zoned into SK. Quillmane was up near NK zone. Legs.
After finding spawn and counting out the timer, ended up with these kills.

15 quillmane - 13 legs 2 cloaks.
27 a lion
16 an escaped splitpaw gnoll
15 a lioness
10 an elephant
6 a shadow wolf
4 a mist wolf
2 a centaur charger
2 a centaur archer
1 a centuar courser
1 aviak harrier
1 aviak rook
1 aviak egret

You have to watch for the respawn... not just for a certain mob. As you can see... the respawns are random and varied. This was over a MAX of 3 hours.

This was all done with a 68 rng.. I was after the cloak for a friend to finish his epic.. at 73 he got frustrated and left it. He's off to hand-in atm.
Being on FV (few no trade items server).. the cloak would sell for an easy 30k+.. but I think I might suprise a newbie mage instead... ;)

Maybe I got lucky, maybe not. But here's what I did:
Camped at hill nearest to the Split Paw entrance. Killed every non-gnoll mob that came near the bases of these hills (still closest to the spires). Also killed as many of the gnolls I could. I don't think the gnolls are PHs. I focused mainly on the mobs (incl. gnolls), running Nor/Sou and Sou/Nor. Two mobs not fitting this pattern were killed, a bull elephant and an elephant calf. I think the bull is the one that popped him because, there was a >2 min time span between the calf kill and Quillmane spawn. 41 lvl gnome magician and it took 3 cinder bolst to kill the pegasus. Kinda late to my epic, so was really excited when I went to loot and found the cloak. Only strategy I'll ever use for this guy again! Thanks to all for the many ideas.

BTW: Quillmane conned light blue and it took maybe 2 hours after really sticking to this strategy to kill. Hope this helps.

My baby Mage zoned in from Lake Rathe today. Heading toward Paw I killed a Lioness just before going over last hill South of Paw.

Set up between Paw and hill, couple minutes a Lion wandered on the N/S route. Pet killed him, then a few seconds later Quill poped right in fromt of me. No cloak only leggings. I got a few more rare spawns path thru , then had to leave.

I think just camping South of paw and killing works well without a tracker type.

I have been using Z's stragegy (with the exception of MQ2) for 2 weeks and have yet to have a single Quillmane spawn. I know he is rare but this is getting ridiculous. At this point I would be willing to pay for the MQ of the cloak. I am going to turn my attention from the cloak for awhile and try to get a group to go to Sky for crown. Anyone willing to help or MQ either or both items will be handsomely rewarded. Feel free to send tells to Hermeine on.

Quillmane actually has multiple spawn locs. So you found one of them, that he could maybe spawn at.

Unfortunately, this is not correct. I took my ranger over and camped that spawn point for about an hour... seems to be a 3-5 minute spawn time there... in between, I killed everything in the area.

While I was killing the PH at -5560, -222 Quillmane popped up on my track. The direction he was in was somewhere south of the Hermit Hut. When I found Quillmane, he was heading north along the east side of the zone.

Unfortunately... he didn't drop the cloak for me. =(

...still hunting him down again.

I spawned and killed Quillmane 5 times yesterday on the Combine as a 32/33/34 mage without a tracker. I also spawned every other named I think. I parked on the Southern side of Paw and killed every wandering mob that was cutting across Paw, North to South or South to North, Quillmane came from the North 3 times and the South once. I did not have a tracker so I did not find the spawn point for the PH. Cracktusk and Gnawfang agroed on me (charging Bull elephant got the blood pumping) so I had to kill them (about 40PP vendor trash) and I also killed Synger Foxyre as a freind wanted her sheild. As I was pulling SP statics and wandering blue mobs at the same time I made good experence (almost 2 complete levels) and about 350PP. Cyclops and Undead Cyclops might have been two of the PH's and Split Paw Gnoll was followed by excaped SP Gnoll and then Quillmane. Also had back to back excaped Gnolls just before Quill. Long camp this way about 8 hours total and he dropped the Feathered Leggings each time, still don't have my cloak and now most of the mobs are light blue or lower. Will probably move on to better hunting and come back in my high 40's when I have completed more of my epic.

Hope this helps, good hunting.

My experiences tonight were similar to many in that I followed Zarovich's post and it worked. By far the hardest part was to find the PH the first time, but once I did, it was very straightforward.

A couple of things I'd like to confirm:

-Quillmane/PH have many, many possible spawn points but all were indeed south of Paw.

-The spawn time is exactly 78 seconds.

-A cyclops can be part of the cycle as he was the first one that I killed that was on his cycle. Once I killed him, I popped quillmane about 4 ph's later confirming he was part of the cycle.

-An elephant and an escaped splitpaw gnoll were by far the most common, followed by a lion, lioness.

-The spawn points were on both the East and West side of the zone, but all were south of Paw.

My experiences tonight:

Killed all afternoon all over the zone, mostly in the north. I killed aviaks, all kinds of elephants, most centuars I came across, - 1 Quillmane - no cloak.

He spawned middle west wall.

Later in the day:

After that I continued killing in the North and in the South when I got bored or ran out of mobs.

By this time I am alone in the zone.

Eventually the mobs I was looking for started started to dwindle. I was hunting (looking for) exclusively Quillmane, an elephant, an elephant calf, an escaped splitpaw gnoll, all clyclops, all lions, and mist wolfs.

After NONE of them spawning for a while (all were effectively dead), about ten minutes, I killed an undead cyclops, a few minutes later (1-3) an elephant calf....then nothing. Nothing for the past 20 minutes. Nothing I have named above has spawned for the past twenty minutes. I was not looking for aviaks or adult/bull elephants or any centuars.

After sitting around a while I went after the shadow wolves as they were the only things up that I deemed worthy of a kill. I wiped out a few of them and then no more spawned for ten minutes, nor did anything mentioned above.

I realize this killing spree does not take into consideration centuars, aviaks and other elephants, but that's it.

If you need clarification or if I have not been clear enough on a certan point, then post and I will respond. I'll be checking back now and then.

Basically, Z has it figured out and I cannot prove him wrong. Not that I was trying.

Can take as long as four hours, keep killing. And note that if your 78-second spawns are all to the far east, you might be on the wrong cycle. The Quillmane cycle moves all around the southern portion of the zone. There will be spawns almost to the zoneline on either side, but all of them should not be on to the east.
How I Spawned Quill 4 times in 1 hour
# Aug 31 2006 at 11:06 PM Rating: Decent
After reading all the posts this is what worked for me:
I did not kill undead cyclops, any named, or any of the splitpaw gnolls, with the exception of the 'escaped splitpaw gnoll'.

I began by using my level 55 ranger to pull and train as many mobs on the southern half of the zone at one time as possible. I killed the train and watched track. Quill does in fact spawn on the shortest timer of about 1 and a half minutes. Therefore after train is dead, the first mob to spawn in the next two minutes is one of his PHs. There are 2 or 3 different two minute spawns that he can pop off of. As soon as train is dead, make a mental note of the mob at the top of the list with track on normal, this is your placement mob for knowing what mobs are the newest. If more than a few minutes go by, retrain zone and rinse/repeat. With this method I spawned 4 Quillmane in 1 hour with 2 cloak drops. Please reply to this post with any success stories to see if it works for anyone else. Good Luck mages!

Didn't have a tracker, so used the slaughter method and killed anything that moved anywhere south of Splitpaw, with the aid of a wizard. Killed junk for an hourish like this, then, apparently, Quillmane spawned in the northern end of the zone. A kick *** awesome ranger /ooc that a cloak was rotting giving a location. About halfway to the first body, wiz said Quillmane! and killed him. Not sure if first body had anything else, but it did have the cloak. Second body had cloak and Gloves of Rallos Zek.

I just spent 2 hours on this, killing mobs every 78 seconds, starting with the one coming from the south to splitpaw. Strange thing was, all of the mobs were Aviaks! Just as Zarovich pointed out down below.

I gave up after coming to the conclusion that if you aren't getting a variety of mobs, then it isnt the RIGHT 78-second cycle.

I have also tried other 78-second cycles where all the mob pops were way on the east side of the zone, near and past the Hermit. I think many spawn points are in the SE corner of the zone. I read somewhere that if the spawn points arent distributed all over the south half, then it isnt the right 78-second cycle either.

Are there any other tips to determining WHICH 78-second cycle is the right one? Some way to cut down the multi-hours it takes to find the right spawn cycle?

Here's a start:
1) Must contain variety of mobs (e.g. not just aviaks)
2) No namers
3) other?

I wanted to answer the question of whether the Placeholders can wander north. In short: Yes they can and do very often wander to the extreme northern end of South Karana. I've been doing this Quill hunting so much in the past that I've formed some very eccentric theories and routines, such as only starting the process when nobody is in the zone when I get there and when I zone into SK, I run right to the southern end of splitpaw and proceed to wait and almost always the placeholder shows up. The question I've wondered is: Why? Things such as lions and aviaks aren't being killed by anything else in the zone and have plenty of time to wander anywhere they like, but sure enough, the ph comes wandering straight through and I get them almost every time. This has led me to question the mechanics of the zone, as to whether someone entering "refreshes" it somehow. I have never noticed a lion or other typical ph "despawn" even after leaving for hours and returning to resume using that same ph. This may be pure conjecture, but I'm baffled, even after an insane amount of Quillmane kills...

Whether anyone else has noticed something similar or not, don't use this inquiry as a guide. If you spend some time at splitpaw and come up completely dry, consider running northward and simply killing anything that shows up to reset the npcs to their southern locations. Then follow the post below, especially that part about the tracker. If you have a ranger with you when Quill spawns and they know what they're doing, you pretty much hold the key to an infinite number of respawns.

Also, I'd love to hear some comments about a typical night of spawning Quillmane. I've noticed some strange things, such as Quillmane spawning in threes within a short time, then being very difficult to spawn for a while.

I needed two cloaks so I kept track of the placeholders and where they spawned. Hopefully this will put some confusion to rest about what can and can't be his ph:

a lion - 16
a lioness - 12
an escaped Splitpaw gnoll - 12
an elephant - 9
a shadow wolf - 6
centaur sheltie - 3
a mist wolf - 3
aviak avocet - 2
centaur archer - 2
aviak darter - 1
aviak harrier - 1
aviak rook - 1
centaur courser - 1
a cyclops - 1
Quillmane - 7

As you can see, I only got the one kind of elephant. While that isn't PROOF that the other kinds of elephant aren't on his spawn cycle, I don't believe that they are. Regular cyclops ARE a ph.

Also: There are MANY 78 second spawns now. I pulled about 1/3rd of the lower half of the zone and AEd and found more than 8 78 second spawns. Since I could only keep up with 2 spawns nicely, I started around splitpaw and just did two at a time until a named popped. I found Mroon and left him up. I found some named Marik guy and left him up. I found the undead cyclops and left him up, after doing this, Quillmane was the next spawn I found. Process of elimination ....hang out at paw and pick as many spawns as you can keep track of and go from there. And do it in the middle of the night so other people in the zone don't ***** you up.

And I 100% GUARANTEE YOU that Quillmane and his placeholders can spawn at more than 30+ locations. The most EXTREME spawns I found were:
as far west as: (3224, -4450)
as far east as: (-2554, -3780)
as far south as: (1865, -6417)
as far north as: (2779, -3575)

I'd say theres about a 98% chance that he or his ph will spawn inside those boundaries

I've been doing this for about a year and your list looks right-on to me. My strategy is similar to yours as I always start at splitpaw. Two important things that weren't mentioned:

1. LEAVE NAMEDS ALONE! Any nameds that pop are simply telling you: "Hey, I'm not a ph for Quillmane." They're your friend. Give them some pie.

2. The hardest part is getting Quillmane to spawn the first time. If you're a ranger:

Have somebody in the zone with you and make sure they are NOT grouped. Assure your track is normal. When Quillmane spawns:
1. Instruct the person (track marker/TM) to zone into Splitpaw. Have them wait a minute or two to let everything you've killed respawn.
2. Use the lapse to obtain aggro on Quill and run back to paw.
3. When the TM has zoned back into South Karana, THEN kill Quillmane.
4. Check normal track (after 78 seconds or whatever the confirmed time is). Whatever has spawned on top of the TM is the new PH.
5. Rinse and repeat.

Sometimes you'll find a couple of npcs that are both on the ph table for Quill above the TM. This may be due to any number of reasons, but when in doubt, kill them both and keep at it. Two possible placeholders is much easier than fifty. Find a way to keep the chain going so as many people as possible can do their Quill hunting (or if you're on FV, be kind and donate some cloaks).

As mentioned, this is best done in the middle of night. People hunting anything other than the Tesch Mas Gnolls can throw you off.

I have over 400 kills in my 6 month career and I've become strangely addicted. In the event any of you become equally as addicted, if you see Brother Qwinn roaming around, pass word along on the Monk class channel. The monks will LOVE you for it.

As always, if any magicians need a cloak on the Firiona Vie server, I'll help make it happen. Good luck and good hunting to all!

I followed Quillmane's path for 2 hours hoping that his path is consistant. It's not but here is what I came up with.

1) Quillmane is a wandering SOB.

2) Quillmane can travel to the northern part of South Karana. If he can travel to the north, does that mean his PH's can? Not sure please advise. I have snapshots that can prove this I just don't know where to post them.

3) Quillmane crossed soutern part of splitpaw more than anyother place (south of the southern spires loc...-3678.30, 545.30, -1.56). I think that area is the best way to spawn him.

4) Most of the places where he stopped had another mob was sitting there. Again I have snapshots to prove it but just tell me where to post them.

This information maybe a waste of time but if it helps one person get Quillmane than it is usfull.

Here is the path I followed

Quillmane came from north just west of splitpaw. Sorry I didn't get the spawn loc.

5/3/06 -- This worked for me as well. Thanks to Maaj and Zarovich for the great information.

I made a mark on my map at the -4725,-225 spot to track with my 38 ranger. My tracking skill was only 171 but it made no difference, as the PH's spawned very close to each other. Once I found the correct PH, I had one lioness spawn at the NE tip of the aviak village, then one mist wolf spawn right beside me, then Quillmane on the SW part of the big dirt hill (the one just south of the spires). The next Quill spawn came after 2 more PH's, once again at the NE tip of the aviak village. Spawns were definitely 78 seconds apart.
The strategy doesn't always work...
# Apr 21 2006 at 4:30 PM Rating: Decent
I think it varies from server to server becasue I have followed Z's straegty to a "T." Today I was in SK for 5 hours with 2 Druids and 3 Rangers, a sk and a cleric and we killed the ph's in the order it mentions, and she only spawned once, the druid had her on track and lost her, we were told that Quill flew near Splitpaw and was killed by the splitpaw gnolls when she got too close to them...We never got her on track again, it is such a waste of time and the epic is not worth the time to wait for this drop when it is an all/all no trade item. Three of us sent a petition to SOE. What a waste of good xp playing time.

Try looking right above your post. See all those numbers (threads 1-19); those are the pages you can click on to access the posts. The nice person who posted the strategy is on page 2. Also, nearly every other page and post beyond that is useless arguing about who should be able to kill Quillmane or how tough their epic is. Thus, do yourself a favor and avoid pages 3-19.

Hope that helps.

another way you can find Quill, without the tedious tracking and counting is by using a bard. Set someone up at -4725, -225, Quil's confirmed spawn spot. Then run aaround the described are with your bard and have him start highsunning mobs back to their spawn points. When one pops at the location, you've found Q's PH. Have fun!
