a rabid grizzly

Very rarely, when wandering the Qeynos Hills, one may find a beast known as a rabid grizzly. Though these animals may not be so fun to kill (as they can result in you getting rabies, or Holly Windstalker/Cros Treewind hunting you down), the reward is well-worth the trouble. When killed, they may drop an item known as A Putrid Bear Hide. This is a very valuable quest item and is the BEST experience one can get at lower levels. In fact, i used this quest to get from level 7 to level 12 in nearly 8 hours. And from there, the quest was great experience for me up to level 22. All you have to do for the quest is take the putrid bear hides and go to the Temple of Life in N Qeynos and find a woman named Priestess Caulria. Once you give them to her, you will get a VERY LARGE amount of experience, Good Factions changed, 1 or 2 platinum, and an Endure Disease spell scroll. This quest is by far the best low-mid level quest in the game for experience, so all you newbies out there, GO AT IT.

i did this quest with the rabid wolf hide about a month ago. Tried it 1/17/2004 with the putrid bear pelt and Caulria return the item to me. Do not know if quest is broken.

Cros was removed from the game a while back, cant recall why. Used to be they both roamed, and Cros for a while dropped a nice lil twink staff....now he's gone, and Holly is so lonely!

To each her suffering, I kill her....a lot.

Paybacks a mother, Holly!!

My 11th circle gnome chanter has been hunting rabid grizzlies between the BB entrance and the Guard house to the south and doing well. Using my pet, I have easily taken on the rabid grizzlies and the wisps. The rabid grizzlies now drop a grizzly hide as well as the putrid hide used for the temple quest. Gotten a good share of Greater Lightstones from the wisps also!

I am camping up on the eastern mountain wall and just pulling them as they pass by!

Do these mobs drop the Rabid Grizzly skins used for the quest arms?

Yes, I got one that is red in the center with pinky trim around. It's not no drop. So you can buy it from another player.

These things and rabid wolves are the reason why i went from level 8-10 in a couple of hours. Turned in just one of these pelts and got a full yellow at lvl 8. Only a crackhead wouldn't hunt these and to my pleasure the zone was full of crackheads. Killed a stacks worth of wolves and about 5 of these. Wow easiest leveling i have seen so far. Oh yeah Holly paid me a visit also. Gonna have to get my mage and bbq her later

This is some good XP. Took a LVL 9 Warrior to LVL 14 in a day of playing (i called in sick). Would have gone higher but that ***** Holly killed me a few times. Rooted me then knocked the crap out of me. Luckily, I was bound in Qeynos. I also have adruid and he can solo these at LVL 9, but you have to DO IT RIGHT. I have yet to figure out their spawn points. I have seen them by the lake and by the tower to WK. I have followed one in circles, all day and it never went by the aforementioned landmarks. Ill keep trying.

I hunted the rabid grizz with my warrior from level 7 to level 16 almost exclusively (except for some giggles in Blackburrow - what a nightmare). Amazing exp! Still received almost two blue bubbles for the skins at level 16. Except for level 1, there's no other place I know of where you can kill only 5-15 animals and level consistently into the mid teens!

He can be found in the valley between the wall (on the east) and the road (on the west) between the entrance to BB (to the north) and the guard tower (to the south). It's not THAT rare a spawn, and although you can expect some competition from others for them, I've seen times when FOUR of them have spawned at once (I almost cried for joy).

Pass the time hunting the rabid wolves. However, be careful that you keep your SKILLS up because you won't raise them by fighting this guy when he goes green! I was working off the deficit for a long time! LOL

Still, there's nothing quite like stunning your friends by taking an alt character to 16 in three moderate days of play.

PS Thanks to the clerics and druids that cured that pesky rabies! Can't have me drooling all over the place!
Where?
# Mar 29 2001 at 11:18 AM Rating: Decent
WHere do these spawn? and mostlyhow often? i haven't found too many, even with a Ranger helping. ANy Idea as to where these Spawn would be appreciated.

They spawn in the area between BB entrance and the guard tower. Also occasionally between the fishing dock and the shop. I've only seen a few per hour. Good luck.
Holly factor?

I am wondering - is Holly always around the rabid bears? Or is it possible to kill one in "peace and quiet" without being in a group or something? Thanks.

RE: Holly factor?
# Jul 13 2001 at 9:58 AM Rating: Default
Hmm, the only times I've seen these guys was when I was round the BB entrance. if you pull them REAL CLOSE to the entrance Holly will NOT move into the bears reaction range unless trained there.

Or if you are a druid or Chanter, cast a lull type spell on the bear.

Ok, yer pathetic if you can't take down a blue con at low lvls like below teens. With my bard on Tallon Zek, I soloed this thing till the break of dawn. Never did the quest though cause I had no clue about it. hehe. Just my opinoin. My money is on the druid if he knows what he/she ios doing.

Maybe they're the equivilant to a lvl 10 Warrior.

Ever tried to take on a lvl 10 warrior with a lvl 12 Druid or Cleric in a duel? My money's on the warrior.

Just a thought.

if you have trouble taking on a lvl 10 rabid grizzly with a 12 druid you aren't a very good druid. All you have to do is make sure your all buffed up and full mana. Cast snare and run away casting on it every once and a while(works best if you can get sow) until you have about a bub of mana left. by this point bear should be down by at least 1/2 health where you just cast shield of thistles and go in and beat it down with you stick, or scimitar. and if i saw i lvl 10 war duel with a half competant lvl 12 druid witha decent weapon, my money would be on the druid.
Further Info

I'm just going to act like you didn't say that Tuernv... To give further information on this quest, a Rabid Grizzly does NOT ALWAYS drop a pelt, i have found that about one out of 20 to 30 Rabid Grizzlies is known to be in the "nude" having no pelt of any sort. Also, both Cros Treewind and Holly Windstalker will attack you if they find you killing wolves or bears. Plus, in the hundreds of rabid grizzlies i have slain, i have YET to receive a Fleshy Orb from one. I DO however find them randomly on rabid wolves. Thank you all and good day.

Can confirm that the odd one does indeed appear to be in the nude i.e. no putrid pelt

Mikkor, why do people like you always assume that your version of morality, fun, etc. is the version that everyone else must subscribe to? If I want to know ahead of time how to do this quest... that is my problem... not yours.
warning
# Jun 27 2000 at 10:36 AM Rating: Decent
warning if you are not aware of it..cros treewind (npc) will, if he sees you attacking the rabid grizzly come and heal the beast and commence to beat the stuffing outta you..probably holly (npc) also but i cannot confirm this the other-oh ya that i can confirm..

I agree; I always get nasty hides from rabid bears. If you ever kill what you think is a rabid bear, and it has no pelt, you have probably slain a normal, non-rabid beast.

If the lower levels wanted to figure it out on their own, they wouldn't be coming to sites like this.
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 02 2000 at 4:50 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Please, for the sake of fun and the search thereof, NObody tell the necessary actions in completing this quest. It just makes life as a newbie less fun if someone goes off and tells you the steps necessary in getting the best exp in the game at lower levels. Have some heart and let them figure it out on their own.

Actually I went searching for map and bestiary info, but Good Quest tip comes in handy, very !! So please go on giving this valuable info... what a weird comment.
