For necromancers killing this guy for Harvester quest, Letheos post from 2002 is probably the most on target:

"Ok, i have seen alot of post on this sublect but all miss the obvious. Just go into the pits on the side of the blood pits. The only thing in there is the Fungus guy. Here is the secret...nothing else will aggro you in the pit. All you have to do to get out with out dying is GATE...why is it that casters always try to walk out?? We all have the one save all port spell so why dont we all try using it??
As far as IVU against a terro or werebat...they are not undead and will see right thru it. Its a waste of time and EXP to think that you can run past them with it on. Of course if there is a necro that is trying to take on the Fungus man and he is aggroed...FD is the best life saver you got."

Getting there is the hard part

Trivial to kill now it's light blue (Banshee Aura, VoTS, melee until it's dead) and probably wouldn't have been much tougher at 34 when I first got VoTS.

The big problem is that the pit is too small to pull back and let the pet take aggro without climbing up the ladder, and the drowsy spell is extremely powerful: my pet would go from typically double or triple hitting for 20-39 every few seconds to hitting very slowly for 10-20. Spell damage is definitely the way to kill them.

However, as others have said, getting there is the hard part if you don't have wolf form. Due to the mix of undead and live mobs in close proximity it can be very hard to creep through invisible; in the end I had to start charming skellies and using them to clear out the live mobs, then FD and re-invis to pass the undead. Shame, of course, that there were no festering hags handy... now they'd make a good pet :).

One useful thing I did discover, given the long, long spawn time, was that provided there were no mobs near enough to aggro I could climb out of one pit, drop into the other and my pet would warp through to join me in killing the other fungus, doubling the kill rate. I ended up killing enough of these things to get most of a yellow of XP at 41 before an eye dropped, so those of you who got one first, second or third time should think yourselves lucky :).

They also drop something called Sarcoscypha Fungus. Looks like frosting, only red. Does anybody know what it is for (it is not no drop lore etc.)

I just finished the Harvester quest tonight. So I thought I would add a little bit of how I got the eye. I used Invis vs Undead until I got to the top of the stairs where the werebats and hags were. Then I switched to Gather Shadows, rand down the stairs and up the next set, and recast Invis vs Undead. Not a problem. Nothing agroed. Then I ran into one of the pits, took 6 damage and killed the Fungus. It took 5 kills, 20 minutes between spawns. Plenty of time to med up, and cast a pet, although I took the Fungus down 2 times without a pet. Then like the poster above, I GATED out of there. Side note, I am a lvl 30 NON-twink Necro. Several of the fights, I came down to one bub of health, but I did win. I hope this helps.

I followed this strategy of IU, reg Invis, IU, reg Invis...The only catch is that at the bottom of the first stairs there CAN be a mix of undead and live at the two spawn points.

I would have done the jump-into-the-pit thing, not with a 20 min spawn time. Just as you walk though the illusory wall at the top of the stairs there is a Mort Fungus spawn who dropped an eye. You can Rest the Dead the two undead spawns at the far end of the lava, then proximity aggro each Mort Fungus in the pits by running over the pit with DMF. The pit that I accidently fell too far into had a ladder to get out, which to my surprise I could climb with DMF still on. In all, the eye dropped 2 out of 3 times and I didn't have to wait for a single spawn.

The terrors and werebats and not undead and hence, will see through invisibility vs. undead. The festering hags are undead, so they will see through regular invisibility spells. Playing in the basement is tough since it is the home of both undead and non-undead aggressive creatures.

I was in unrest today trying to get the eye for the harvester quest. It's really hard to take out this little bugger by yourself without everything and their dog aggroing you. What I did is just had a 50+ lvl druid pull it for me into the hallway near the basement entrance. Once you have him alone, he's not hard at all. I resisted all his spells and just nuked him w/ shock of poison.

Good Luck all on the quest!

READ ME BEFORE U GO FOR FUNGUS!!!
# Mar 04 2001 at 7:01 PM Rating: Good
Hi, I am a 31 necro on the 7th hammer, and I died 3 times in unrest trying to get this even with help. First of all, The fungus are located in the basemit at the lava pit.. If u walk on the left or right of the lava pit, u'll fall down a hole and u will land on spikes and the fungus will be right there, and in the small room, a ladder is in there so u can get out if u dont die, but I never fall in cause i know the secret, walk over the lava not to fall in, WON't HURT u AT ALL but anyways.... ALWAYS GET WOLF FORM BEFORE U GO IN THERE (39 druids and higher) can cast lt on ya, but don't bug them, cause unrest is also a zone with mean ppl, just like south karana :(. Anyways, with wolf form, EVERYTHING cons indiff.. so you'll be good because the only live things are dark tenactales and dark terrors and crap, and they are live and they ARE right at pit trap with lava where fungus is, so invis vs undead might be a problem. My first account I was exploring in basement and forgot to renew invis vs undead and it ran out, and u dont want invis wearing out around werebats and festering hags and skeletal monks, they are the only undead that still aggro on u.. and second time, I went LD with wolf form on top of the lava pit, but when i came on, i was still alive somehow, and when i cat invis vs undead and went up the ladder, it ran out for somereason hehe and tenatcles threw me in a room full of undeads, and i died, and for the second time, i had a 53 druid friend kill the fungus when i had levitate on, but fungus didint drop, then i camped and came on the next day. Ok i got a 52 paladin to kill the fungus for me again but still no drop :( so after they fungus were killed, i set in the pits, and made a pet, and just camped the spawn (Fungus spawn is 20 MINUTES!!!) which is boring but oh well, and when they spawn, they go for u, but they dont hit hard, and as a dark elf, i dodged most of hits and boil blooded/darkness'ed, but I did not fear, I didnt know what that would do so I didint do.. So finally after 40 min (Most ppl I know got eye first time) I got the eye, and as i went up the ladder, I died cause I tried to sneak by a dark terror hehe, which was a big mistake, so Oh well.. I lost 3 full bubs of xp which is alot of xp but I got my eye and now i need to get the knife in OOT, well best of luck to ya....
cast range
# Dec 18 2000 at 4:05 AM Rating: Decent
I pulled one of these things out into the back yard area with dooming darkness, and i kept seeing it cast while i was kiting, but then it would stop as soon as i moved far enough away from it. The only reason i can see for this happening is that it has a small range for Mort Drowsy or whatever else it was attempting to hit me with. Or it was a bug in my favor. Either way, it died relatively quickly, leading me to belive it doesnt have that many hp's either.

Hehe, i was hunting in unrest the other day when some idiot forgot to yell train and brought forth the wrath of the entire basement... needless to say everyone pulling from the front door was brutally murdered, but not me. Thank you FD. Anyways, when the train subided the mort fungus stuck round and jumped me. he hit me, but not s hard as the other mobs. BTW im lvl 23 monk... he hit for 20ish dmg. not too bad considering he was BLOODY RED to me. but every time i hit it, i would her this crcking sound... it was kind funny in the beginging, but then it just got annoying. then it tried to drowsy me... to no vail... I was beating it down. but it has somesort of insane chloraplst or something. because i would hit it three times for 17 then strike for 19 (my average now) then wait 2 secs for the delay. i'd hit it gain. but id look at its helth nd it was back up to 100%. Luckily there was a lvl 50 druid near and he dmg shielded me nd kept me alive for the 10min ordeal. Yes you herd me, 10 mins to take this guy down solo. Freaking regen effect. Anyways, its just funny the sound it makes. Its almost as annoying as the jack-o-lantern laugh. =p

The effect...
# Apr 07 2000 at 4:04 AM Rating: Decent
...of the mort drowsy is a slowing down of your attack speed, if you already have a slow attack, it will stop it entirely. If you have a fast attack (small weapon delay) you will still be able to attack, just slower.

The effect does not last very long, but it is an area effect to the party. Can be difficult for meleers, but casters/hybrids can still cast at will.

Get a magic resist buff and these slows will only stick 1 out of every 20 casts or so.

Mort Drowsy
# Mar 23 2000 at 3:20 AM Rating: Decent
The mort Drowsy spell actually STOPS all melee attacks i have seen the occasional one hit after the spell effects you but never more then one...until it wears off...so unless they have a good magic resistance meleers are worthless against these...so nuke heavy and fast so your melee people can come back in comission for whatever else the Fungus brought with it... btw in Unrest they live almost exclusively in the Spike pit traps on each side of the blood pool....and yes they can cast their drowsy effect at most places on the second floor...

Mortuary fungi cast an area effect spell called mort drowsy. It slows down attack rate, movement speed, and usually effects the people in magi room even though they are in the basement. I think the mort drowsy spell will un-invis you.
