24 Mage, was having lots of problems getting Fire DD to stick until I got Malaise. After that it was a piece of cake. Sent Earth pet in to root, cast Malaise then 3 or 4 Fire Bolts. Avocet was either dead or below 20% and turned.
Solo'd a few at lvl 24. Pretty time comsuming then, but now at 27, I can usually get them with about 20% mana left over. Xp seems to be pretty low on reds, less than one blue.
I have been killed many a time by an avocet, not because i was fighting em, but because a rook or something has one taggin along. I was a kill away from 27, and had a rook about 30hp away from dying. Anyway he is runnin down from the mid level of the city and a big ol avocet is waitin for me at the bottom. He starts hittin for 60-70 so i start runnin. Of course sow wears off and im done. After about 40 seconds of attempting to run i had 2 avos three rooks and 2 harriers on me not to mention some darters. Obviously i died, and lost all the work i had done all day. And that my friends is why these are hard. Setarian Soon to be 27 beastlord
headed to kfc for the first time this weekend, entered in at lvl 18 and by the end of the weekend i was 22 shammy ogre. When I first got in a group we would take these with a full group of 16-19 lvl. At lvl 20 I started to hunt these with a lvl 21 beastlord and 23 ranger, did chain casting of burst of str on the ranger and fleeting fury on the beastlord's pet (beastlord was casting it on himself so i didn't need to). Every now and then I'd heal the ranger and give him fleeting fury to bring his stamina back up. There is no need in wasting any of your mana by casting spells on the avo when it's red. It'll be just one big mana dump, spend on somethin' else like buffing your melee class and healing them.
With the help of a lvl 17 warrior that same group was able to take down a cyclops with no one dieing or going below 20 health. Just brt of spd, fleeting fury, and heal the damage giving melee'ers and you'll do find.
If I had to choose between the 3 places you named for loot, I'd go to South Karana.
Lake of Ill Omen has the best experience modifiers of the 3 places you listed. However, it has virtually nothing for loot.
South Karana, depending on what you fight, has plenty of loot. The Aviaks are ideal at level 25, and usually drop coins/weapons/gems. The higher level aviaks (Harriers/Avocents) usually drop Fine Steel weapons, which sell for around 3-4pp each. And since there is a vendor Aviak (Krak Windchaser) at the top of the Aviak tree, you never have to worry about going to town to sell.
When you get into 28-30, head to Paw. A group of 4-6 people can hold the initial zone-in/bedroom are of paw really easily. The gnolls drop pp, Fine Steel weapons, and several pieces of Splitpaw hide armor, which can either be sold to vendors, or sold in EC for modest sums. The exp in Paw is actually quite good, and on-par with anything in Kunark except maybe Dalnir's Crypt, which most people are too scared to go to anyway.
The other advantage/disadvantage to going to South Karana is that very few people go there now, so the Aviaks are not crowded anymore. I soloed there some with my druid last night, and the entire Aviak Village was basically up for grabs. There were only two groups fighting around it the entire night, and nobody had even gone upstairs and taken over the Penthouse (which in the old days was "the" camp to have, and wasn't bad exp either)
39 ranger(just), got my last two yellow bubbs of 38th lvl xp from soloing these avo's (/con blue, and i was surprised) and dinged 39, simple tactics, snare, root, dot, bow till it breaks, wash rinse & repeat till about 1/4 health or your oom, walk in tank it out, great for getting archery skills up (180 to 195 for me in two yellows), make friends with mages, yes i paid for summoned arrows, and was happy to, about 30 stacks of arrows cost me about 30p, with avo loot it is recovered easily, have tracksort set to distance, start at the bridge and work through the roamers till you get to the aviak city, happy hunting.(clarity helps but not super needed)
new spells rock(for us rangers)DD is now 99 from 37. Healing does 90 up from old 29. call of sky is a 35dd with a stun.

I am a only slightly twinked 28 monk on prexus and I can solo these guys fairly effectively. I start by attacking one at full health and then when he beats me down to about 1bub I fd. Then get up bind wound to half, mend and beat him down. Very irritating if someone steals him while you are binding, but does not happen very often =)
Stayaway here, Wanted to let the necro's out there know that these are great to solo.. I started at lvl 27 and I am still doing it at 30... the only thing is you need SOW.. Darkness, heat or boil blood, heart flutter, vampiric curse, pet, fear, and poisiion bolt till its dead... that is it.. If it resists any of the spells, run and recast... but remember my friends...SOW...thats right, you should make friends with the local druids hanging out..
As a lvl 28 druid i still have some trouble soloing these avos, so be careful on selecting try to picked the neutral con. Just snare, DOT, then DD, if u running out of mana RUN for safety then Med. then DD it hehehe you own him! a bit hairy but fun :)
I was grouped with 3 lvl 20 druids a 19 Pally and my 20 Ranger and we took out three of these things. If we had even one less druid in our party my ranger would be toast I'm here to tell you. The Pally couldnt hit them, the Druids gave up nukes and simply cast heal on me and only my dual wield and new double attack kept me from becoming a corpse even with the heals. I was hit repeatedly for 66+ damage. These guys are tough. but good exp
I stopped camping at the spires at started soloing the avo's. Was passing the spires with my 37 war and noticed that about half of the gnolls there were green. As I ran by the kfc, I also noticed that every avo I saw was blue. So anymore when I have my druid I kill the avo's, less crowded. One more thing, looted a black marble off a avo last night, does anyone know if its used for anything or what its worth. A vendor offered me 15pp for it so I figured it was rare
It's a Black Pearl. You can have someone make you Black Pearl jewlery which will add Agi and Dex. This and an enchanted gold bar make a necklace, plus 7 stats on both. A platinum bar makes a ring which is plus 6 stats on both.
28 is about right. I am a level 30 warrior and he conned blu to me. The first time i fought him i killed him easily the second time he had a rusty long sword and almost killed me. Of course I really wasn't paying him to much attention so i could have been missing alot, and that combined with not kicking or bashing could have made the difference. Didn't get a charm though.
lol. 75% of them drop charms? bah. I spent two hours camping them with a 28 warrior and a 39 druid friend and killed about 7-8 and not a single one dropped a charm. Maybe it was just a REALLY bad day for drops, i dunno.

I don't know how yall say these are hard. IM lvl 20 druid and in a group with 22 warrior and 22 bard. We easly take these out with me at 40m and usually the tank at 50% if i dont heal him back up after battle. Just thorn tank, swarm avocate, and HEAL the warrior. We sometimes can go take a harrier before we need a full rest. -If they both didn't have weapons. Good luck all and DRUIDS rule!!!
i dont see them being as easy as you say, but they arnt as hard as others say either. at 22nd lvl my warrior(non-twinked) and a 19 pally, plus a 19 wizzy took down an aviak and it wasnt that hard. Just required good team work and good timing with pallys lay on hands.
You have obviously never fought an avocet. These things hit hard, from 50 to 60 dmg. Me (a lvl 26 warrior VERY twinked) and a druid lvl 22 were fighting these and the druid couldn't land a snare, stinging swarm, nuke, or any other kind of spell. He ended up just healing me and we would barely make it through (and that's with him at full mana and me at full health, 1120hp or something like that). So please do some research before you make a statement next time.
These aren't a hard kill if you are teamed up wisely. I'm a level 27 barbarian warrior and my good friend Horem is a level 31 barbarian Shaman. Together we take these things down with little resistance. We can kill two or three in a row. Team with a Shaman great teammate for warriors. Good luck all.
I started soloin' yellow and sometimes even red ones when I turned 26, of course the red would resist a little more but i'd run and try it again. If I couldn't handle it and knew it, zone is close enough to bird house. Being a druid is fun.;)
Well im a 26 druid, i grouped with a guildmate who was a 21 druid, not one of his spells landed, and all my DD's did but he resisted my snares quite often. I can get him to about 1/3 his life while run, dot, nuke, but thats about it. Can you say OOM.
I had an experience similar to that. Myself (a 19 pallie) and a guildie who was a 27 wiz, decided to take one on. He conned yellow to the wiz and quite red to me. I managed to bash him enough to keep him stunned for about 2 bubs of health. My stuns ran out or something, and after a well-timed root, followed by insane DD's on the part of the Wiz, we managed to whittle him down to a paltry 1 bub. He broke root and whaled on my caster friend. I used LoH on the caster, brought him back, and started taunting, hoping that the caster's mana would hold out. I was done to my last 1/2 bub, the caster was down equally, when some kind soul swooped in with a few good hits (thank you mystery warrior) and saved our sorry hides. Whether we could've had him, I dunno. However, I got a good blue bub of exp outta the ordeal
I am a 19 rogue and my friends and i were camping avocets with no problem. the 25 ranger would snare/bow pull them and when they arrived ranger tanked while our 24 enchanter kept hitting the ranger with berserker strength while i backstabbed (and pickpocketed:p) from behind. The ranger only lost half life, and the enchanter and i were never touched. I was getting almost a full blue bub for each one.
well of course that's what you think about them! you were in a group much stronger than you and they were a perfect combination of classes. if you tried soloing one of these, you would find yourself face down on the ground in no time.
Granted he was in a higher group, but the class combination is nothing to critisize him for. Past level 20, you should group 90% of the time anyway since you can no longer effectively solo anything other than light blues.
Sorry pal but I just recently reached 50 with my Paladin and i got about half of my exp in 49 by soloing. So if you are unable to effectively solo Dark Blues at level 20, I think we can chalk it up to operator error rather then the games system.
I soloed several levels between 30 and 40 with a cleric. If I can solo, any class should be able to. Maybe a bit tougher for the wizards, since they don't get decent armor, pets or sow/snare, but still, anyone can solo at least til 40. Then there is less you can kill, although I still get exp for the undead cyclops and aviak avocets at 44. However, it would take forever to level this way. I only am killing these to reduce the monotony of waiting for undead Lord Grimrot.
Okay, there was a lvl40 warrior behind me (lvl24 Darkelf Warrior MAJORLY Twinked sta: 134 Dex: 127 etc etc high stats for low level) and once I got to the bird he BEAT THE **** out of me! The warrior said he conned blue so that would mean the birds lvl38? No? And if he had minor diffacultie with one there's something majorly wrong . . .
I've been in full groups level23-27 and we were all uber twinks and had HELL of a time fighting avo's. One every ugh 30minutes?! Everyone needed a heal, the odds of something NOT aggroing, casters = pointless spells never landed, you tell me. I play on povar - and ugh. No one anywhere near lvl22 fights those things. Full groups or not.
Name: Specatic Server: Povar Guild: Circle of Tree
A blue /con to a lvl 40 doesn't mean lvl 38 - not by a long shot. The "blue range" get larger and larger as your level increases. I am not positive of the spread at lvl 40, but 10 levels doesn't sound unreasonable at all.

Hmm im surprised nobody has mentioned the crafted gauntlet quest. You need the aviak charm and 2 star rubies. The rubies cost less than 100pp, like, around 60 with good charisma. I am interested in getting the aviak charm, but my warrior is only lvl 18.
oh yeah, the gauntlets sell for around 200pp so if u get an aviak charm, buy the rubies, and sell the gauntlets, u get pretty good profit. The guy u give the stuff to is in south karana, his name is Shakrn.
I am soloing here instead of frontier mountains at lvl 35. I am a druid and these Avocets give better exp than the forest giant tumps do, No one else seems to want to hunt them , will kil thewm till i Ding to 36 , then head to rathe Mountains to solo HG giants
Ok when you go to aviak you will notice there is several huts build in the trees plus the city itself in center.Anyway for a sollow or small grp of 3 or 4 you can go hunt one of the sollow trees away from the city to prevent aggros from main city area.Just look into single hut on tree and you will see bird in tree, get close enough and snare or root or blast whatever means pull him out of tree hut. They spawn about every 6 to 7 min more than enough time get mana or full health back.
