Aviak Harriers are slightly weaker than Avocets, they tend to wander the area around the Village, and of course are found in the Aviak Village itself.

Last night I was soloing at the chicken coup, taking out all of the static spawns, when I saw a wandering Harrier (conned dark blue to lvl 29). I think "another one bites the dust". So I engage it and I am doing a number on him, when all of a sudden my hp start dropping faster than I expected. I then see the mob waving his arms around like he is a caster or something. I think to myself "Self, he looked like he was casting, but these mobs never cast, only melee." Sure enough he does it again, and I see the message "You are seared by flames. You have taken 72 points of damage." I think, WTF, he might just fry me if I am not careful. Then I get blasted two more times before I know it. He was probably a shaman or a wizard, since it was fire-based, and his recast time was like two seconds. In all, I got toasted six times in about 25 seconds of melee combat before I ran to the zone line, each time for 72 points of damage. In my two years of playing EQ and this is my fourth toon I have leveled up in S Karana, I have never seen this mob. It may be something new with a recent patch, but I don't know. Just be careful out there, because there's casters out there....

21 lvl wiz. Had SoW. was running around looking for rooks, saw this character, he conned red. My ranger friend who cast the Sow (lvl 33) was nearby at the gnolls, so i figured i'd try, knowing i had a place to run to if things wenrt sour. Cast my fist Mana Shock, and my ranger friend tells me he had to zone cause he got trained.

%^$%^@@!

Well, I was able to kite him. He never hit me, and he died while I had about a half blue of mana left. He had a couple partial resists on Mana shock. GREAT exp, and over a pp of loot.

It's uncommon for a certain item but every harrier I get either a jewel worth at least 3pp or the equivilent in coin. I've also gotten a golden pendant worth a nice sum

I just sold one to a vendor for 14pp. I am a Troll with very bad charisma. Tried to sell in the bazaar, but no takers. Not sure if it is used for anything, but 14pp from a vendor is a very good price.

How much harder are they than rooks? I can solo rooks most of the time, but not soundly. That was at lvl 19. Now that I am at lvl 20 and got new spells n such, is it possible for me to solo now?

I have garnered opals and black pearls from both Avocets and Harriers. Avocets tend to carry the better gemstones more the often. -- Gaius Germanicus

My group killed one a few nights ago it was red to me but a chanter debuffed him so I could nuke him. There was 4 LVL 19s and 1 LVL 20.

Just an observation: it's very difficult to prove something can't happen simply by observing that it hasn't happened.

I've killed a lot of harriers, and I've never gotten a black pearl from one. But that doesn't mean they don't periodically drop black pearls. (I've gotten some strange drops on occasion from a lot of mobs. Unexpected stuff. You never know.)

Now, what really IS true is this: there is no such mob as Grizzleknot. I've spent hundreds of hours in South Karana and never seen him. I'm pretty sure Groi Gutblade and Synger Foxfyre (sp?) don't exist either.

:)

Groi Gutblade and his pet difinitely are real. They bushwached me when I was at 50% health and mana. Killed pet easily but was forced to run with Sow at 10% health.Plan on getting him next time.

Pair of mages will take down

This morning took on a harrier with another level 20 mage (a water pet and a fire pet). Pulled with a big DD (Bolt of Flame), sat back and nuked and kept pets healthy. Needed to nuke though and got each of two harriers this way. So, it did not seem like a fluke. I highle recommend getting a SoW before hand in case you get a slew of resists and fizzles. I cannot believe a pair of mages taking on a red-conning harrier!

Just dinged 22 - Decided to take on a Harrier. Killed it with 1/2 mana left. Just used Engulfing darkness, fear, and sent in the pet. Used siphon life on it to lower hps. A 22 necro can take these guys (would recommend you have sow just in case).

I can believe it, actually.

I only grouped with another magician once, but it was an eye-opening experience. It was almost as if there is some special code that kicks in when two mage pets attack the same mob. Stuff that would be a handful or impossible solo was dropping before I could get in a second nuke.

Maybe it's that there is no waiting for slow human fingers. Whatever it was, the mobs would twirl, trying to fight both, seemingly unable to do any damage or defend themselves, and down they would go in a very short time.

I've often thought six magicians would be perhaps the deadliest of all possible groups. Six tanks and twelve casters ... with six of those casters able to heal the other six caster/tanks. And, best I can tell, pets never fizzle, never get interrupted, and never run out of mana.

I have gotten the message "Labartik's casting is interupted!" a handful of times, so pets do get interrupted, though not all that often.

Pets do tend to cycle through their taunts, kicks, and bashes pretty quickly, at least compared to a lot of player-controlled tanks. Pets don't have to watch party members' life bars or take a few seconds to /groupsay something important in the middle of a fight.

I have gotten ONE BP off a harrier in about a million tries.
Much Easier than Avos

Avos need full pet, sow, clarity, a lotta luck, a lotta room, and a low con one, these I can take half life half pet half mana... Also they don't have BPs

They drop bronze as well ( if it does not look like a long sword or a short sword it's bronze ), that goes for all the ones at the city.
#Anonymous, Posted: Feb 26 2000 at 8:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) In all the times I killed these I never had a Black pearl drop, nor have any of my friends. They are harder to fight than the Avocets, from a soloist viewpoint.
