Is the spelling of "legionnare" correct? Or should it be "legionnaire?"

Changing it to the proper spelling until someone tells us differently.
The misspelling is correct.

Also, these cannot be attacked by pets, and rather quickly beat the snot out of you. I do not know if they can be attacked by PCs, didn't get a chance to try.
