The shadowmen come in the classes of Warrior, Monk, Cleric and Necromancer. The Necromancers tend to look like books, while the Priests have the appearance of Snow cones. The Warriors tend to show their weapons, while the monks are invisible (save for their name).

Shadowmen hang out at fixed locations, usually in groups from four to seven. They do not have a huge aggro radius, but are social so Harmony can be very handy in fighting them.

Shadowmen move very very quickly. If you're trying to run from them, you will need a high level bard with a magical drum to be able to escape them, they can outrun all forms of Spirit of Wolf.

Shadowmen drop numerous items for numerous quests. So many items are dropped that it can be a maddening experience trying to get the one you need. It has been theorized that the shadowmen in different zones are more likely to drop the various items.

Most of the items they drop are Temporary meaning they will disappear if you log out.

In Innothule Swamp:

  • This mob spawns at -420,+325.

In Nektulos Forest:

  • This mob spawns at -1450,+824.

An identify on one of these gave me "Shadow of the fourth deathspeaker". Don't know what that's supposed to mean though.

Just interested if these things are affected by the spells that affect summoned creatures. I got to feeling a little tough with my Paladin and got soundly trounced by the bad boys in West Commonlands.

Saw the group of shadowed men in Nektulos when chasing a wolf with my little level 11 DE warrior. Stopped short but wondered about them because I thought there was what looked like a magical item on the ground. Now realize this was one of the men (floating snow cone). Anyway came back with my Main, a level 31 Shammy and my Hubby, a level 32 Ranger, buffed to the gills, nicely outfitted, me in bear form. They conned dark blue but we thought what the hell, we've done these sort of numbers before... 3 shadowed men w/ pets, one w/o... Hubby cast Harmony which did not work and brought them all... he ran with 1/2 health (me furiously casting 300hp heals pointlessly) some chased him, as we know now faster than SoW, some stayed with me where I was feared, and chasing the moon, and generally trying to gate when not frozen, but mostly useless, he died, then I died... I swear the whole thing was not more than 30 seconds. Humbling to say the least...

Vial of Shadow is now dropping of the shadow men in Lavastorm. Just noticed starting to drop on 12/05/02 after the patch. They are no drop but not no rent. Any clues to what they are for?

Have picked these up before, but have no idea what they are for. Hate to destroy them, and can't sell no drop (which makes me believe guy above was thinking about the essence of shadow not vial). The essence are used in making dark elf cultural armor and I sell them for 300 pp on Terris Thule server. Never last more than a day, so maybe need to raise price to 500?

If anyone figures what to do with vial, please post. In meantime, I will just sit on it...))

Noticed that the Shadowed Man that drops the Vial of Shadow is an SK. Don't remember there being SK Shadowed Men before either. If anyone knows what quest this is for, I'd love to know.

# Nov 19 2002 at 12:58 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, first off, the rapier for the Jboots quest is No rent, so you need to get this last in the quest. Not only that, but you have to camp a really long and frequently KSed camp of the Ancient Cyclops, I camped this thing for a week and it didn't once pop, eventually I had to just say ***** it, but point is the fact the Ancient Cyclops is a level 45 Mob that this as hard if not harder then a seafury Cyclops, so you gotta lot of work to do before you stand up to this bad boy.
RE: i am going to do the journymans quest
# Nov 27 2002 at 7:06 PM Rating: Decent
Clarification - the Ancient Cyclops in the Ocean of Tears is around the 45th rank, but the Ancient Cyclops in the Desert of South Ro is easier to kill. Closer to 35th rank. I know a monk of 39th rank (not twinked - CCS and goranga spiked club) who soloed him in South Ro. It was close, but do-able. I myself (a knight, also not twinked) have soloed him at the 41st rank. In South Ro, the sand giants (except Hassam) are much tougher than the Ancient Cyclops.

Both camps are considered free for all, which is to say, whoever gets aggro first, gets the kill.

I have seen the AC in South Ro three times in one week; then again I've also spent 8 hours straight there without seeing him.

You should get somebody lvl 37+ to single pull for you, or an enchanter who can mez extras. Your rogue & wizard will have no problem killing them one at a time, but you won't be able to single pull alone yet. If you get two+, you'll probably die. :p

Note that the shadowed rapier for the j'boots quest is NO RENT, which means that when you camp out, it will vanish. So, you should get the other components for the ring first, and get the rapier last. (If you get the rapier earlier you could leave it on a corpse, that's one way to keep no rent items, but the rapier isn't too hard to find.)

Edit: if you really have to try, I would recommend Nektulos Forest (read my post below for details). The wizard can keep one of a pair rooted down in the valley, with luck you would only pull the second one in the pair. If you get more than one, have the wizard evac you out. You could try and see - but quite risky, I'd say.

Didi's Complete Guide to Shadowed Men!
(updated 9 Jan 04)

Everything you Ever Wanted to Know About Shadowed Men.

by Knight Didi D'Aryth, Firiona Vie server
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~pentapod/text/didi1.html

EDIT: update - as of November 02, essences of shadow no longer go trivial under the TLC on Firiona Vie server. (Other smithing components like lava rocks have also been flagged non-TLC.)

---

About the shadowed men:

They become trivial (if you are on a TLC rules server) at about the 38th-39th rank (EDIT: correction - there are occasionally a few still light blue at 41, not many though). They are very under-conned; although they will be dark blue in your late 20s, you WILL die. The best age to hunt them for items is 36 up, when they will be light blue and you will be able to single pull a reasonable percentage of the time.

There are three (four) types. They are all invisible. The necromancers can be identified by the book they hold - often they have a skeletal pet with them also. The clerics look like a little floaty blue ice cream cone. And the warriors, there are two subtypes - those who dual wield weapons, which will be visible floating in the air, and those who hold no obvious weapons (some say these are monks). These latter are totally invisible ((so go to your display options and ensure that "show NPC names" are ON)).

---

Shadowed men behaviour

The shadowed men move fast - faster than SOW. If you're not amazingly good at Bashing your foe, you'd better have a snare spell to stop them running, otherwise you'll be chasing them all over the zone. Even when they are hurt bad enough to run away, they will still run as fast as you. If you have to run from them ... keep in mind you will NOT outrun them, and if the zone is a fair distance, start running earlier than if they were a slower foe. If you pulled with a snare remember to re-snare part way through the fight or of course it will go just as they run. PS, I mean it when I say they run fast. They run FAST. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Shadowed men are decent experience in your 20s and very early 30s but by the time you can hunt them solo, you won't get much experience. They do carry up to 4 or so platinum, so if you're lucky you can earn some pocket money.

The warriors are the easiest to fight. A melee will take very little damage at the 36th rank, if s/he can single pull. I have noticed no difference between the duel wielding warriors and the totally invisible ones, in terms of damage. They do hit hard and will interrupt your spells if you get more than one, however. Just use your highest damage weapon and keep thumping.

The clerics will heal each other - it's important to get them separately. With two people who can bash, they are fairly easy to kill as long as you interrupt their healing spells. Or, with a wizard who can blast them to death before they can heal, no problems. However, if you're alone, they are a nuisance. Eventually the cleric will run out of mana but it's slow and annoying.

The necromancers are the most difficult. Their pet will bash you, interrupting your spells, and the shadowed man will cast nukes that do up to 200ish damage. They will also try to cast fear on you, and various DoTs. As with the clerics, a single melee cannot bash frequently enough to interrupt all spells. If you are a melee, watch their casting and when you see that orange flame appear, bash - this one is the nuke. Don't bash for the other spells unless your magic resistance is really awful - use that bash when it will matter. If you can feign death, then once the shadowed man necromancer dies, feign. His pet will then suicide, sparing you the bother. The pets have no loot and are lower rank than the shadowed men so not worth the effort.

Note that you need a magic weapon and shield to hit/bash these guys.

Shadowed men are found in the following locations:

Innothuule Swamp
The shadowed men used to hang around a large statue of a hand in the swamp, however it appears that the invasion of the frogloks have driven them out of the zone, and they are no longer found here.

Lavastorm
group of 4-6 on top of plateau to west of Nek zone, around a pillar. Not a recommended location. The shadowed men in Lavastorm are very dangerous until you have high magic resistance, because the necromancer types will Fear you straight into some nice warm lava. Not recommended until you're finding you do not get Feared in the other locations.

Nektulos Forest
my personal favorite particularly if you are lower rank. Normally four here (in two matched pairs that can be pulled apart). From Neriak, head south across the bridge, then take the first path right. When path ends, keep going straight, shadow men are in the valley with the pillar. In the Nektulos area there's a useful apparent pathing problem due to the valley. If you enter the valley and cast Fear on one of a pair of the shadowed men, one will be Feared out of the valley and the other will come to you. The pathing problem means that the fellow who was scared out of the valley is about 90% likely not to find his way back in again. Kill off his friend in peace and quiet, and then either sit and heal - in which case he'll eventually return to his spawn point after about 5 minutes - or you can find him by going north towards the river, once you are out of the valley he will be able to 'see' you again.

South Karanas
towards the south end of the west wall, a group of six normally, difficult to pull apart until they're light blue. Also difficult to find, no obvious landmarks nearby. Usually two types (e.g. 2 clerics, 4 warriors). Some claim the drop rate of essences here is higher than in other places. I had a very good night here one time, but the other times I didn't notice anything different, so hard to say if it's true.

West Commonlands
one of the larger camps - normally 6, in 2 groups. At the far southwest corner of zone.

Lesser Faydark
There are shadowed men south and west from the Steamfont entrance, standing on a big stone monument thing. Take care in this zone, as there's a rather high chance of getting stomped by Equestrielle (and the pained unicorn, if you are evil). I have heard that some of these shadowed men drop items for quests that shadowed men in other zones do not have.

Kithicor Forest
I have never hunted here, so I don't have any personal experience of the shadowed men in this zone. However EQAtlas has this to say: "The shadowed men have recently taken up appearing in this zone with frightening frequency. Their stepped up presence has turned a previously relatively safe zone into a much more dangerous one, as they often can't be seen until close, form into cohesive and deadly groups, and are extremely powerful. Keep your eyes peeled for this new group of inhabitants." Given the other dangers of Kithicor Forest, I would suspect this is not a recommended place to hunt shadowed men.

(There's also one renegade named shadowed man named Ssynthi in Mistmoore, who is for quests and does not drop normal shadowed men things.)

---

Items they drop:

Essence of shadows. Looks like an onyx, and stacks. Seems very random how often they drop - I've seen 3 in a row drop sometimes, then again there have been times I fought for 4 hours and got only one. If you're getting more than one per ten shadowed men, be happy. This is for teir'dal cultural smithing and will sell from 10-30pp, more on servers where Trivial Loot Code is in effect.

The totally invisible warriors drop the shadowed scythe sometimes. This is needed for the necromancer Harvester quest. Run up to the Temple of Solusek Ro in Lavastorm; go to the main library and downstairs there is an Erudian called Vurgo. Give the scythe to him and you get a note. Give the note to your favorite necromancer for the Harvester quest. The scythe is no rent, but the note is not.

The duel wielding warriors sometimes hold a shadowed rapier. This is required for the j'boots quest. You can see by looking at the warrior whether he holds a rapier.

Shadowed ball (for Tishan's Kilt quest) and Shadowed Book (for Necromancer Words of Darkness quest) and various other items.

Most of the other items they drop are for quests - like the patch of shadow for the wizard acumen mask quest - but all the shadowed items are no rent and cannot be sold. Some items cast necromancer spells if you right-click on them (1 charge) - deadeye, grim aura, shadowstep, for example.

The shadowed weapons are pretty useless (with the exception of the above). They are heavy, no rent and do not sell. However, they are magic weapons, and can be used by a pet. A magic weapon is required to hit the shadowed men, so these are great for your pet.

RE: solo?
# Oct 03 2002 at 3:47 PM Rating: Decent
At 43 you can certainly solo any Shadowed Men camp, they will all be green to you. Careful, they will still mob you if you walk into the middle of the camp, and although they're green if there are necromancers nuking it might be a bit risky even with your high AC. Stay at a distance to be safe, you'll have no problems single pulling from a distance with a spell or with arrows. Go invisible to get up close and see which one has the rapier you need - none of them see through invisibility. That way you can target the right one, then back off and pull him out on his own.

As for location, I would recommend checking West Commons first as that's one of the biggest camps, then if none there have the rapier, it's a close run to check Nektulos and Lavastorm.

Note, the rapier for the jboots quest is NO RENT so you should get this item LAST, after you get the ring.

My tale of these invisible summoned beings
# Jun 13 2002 at 1:01 PM Rating: Excellent
For a while now my sister and I have been hunting the West Commonlands to obtain myself a Patch of Shadow. I heard tales from many people that the patch dropped quite a bit, but it took over a week and a half of nights of taking out these men to obtain it. But that is not the brunt of this tale. What I tell you of was completely strange. We took down the whole camp-about five shadowed men, two of them clerics one a necromancer-and waited for the respawn. In a short time the camp respawned... but not in a normal way.. It respawned with Seven Necromancers, and two clerics. Nine total shadowed men, seven pets!!! This was extremely rare, and we thought we may have to leave. But my sister tacked on harmony, and bravely pulled a shadowed men, preparing to take refuge in the veil, but luckily none of them agroed another. The Patch finally dropped and all was well.

Had a group camp these guys to get the eye of shadow and the hand of shadow for the shadowbound Necro gear. We got them both in about 5 kills in Nektulos. I then went back the next day and soloed them (lvl 35 Necro). Had no problems taking out 2 warrior or priest class ones at a time but the Necro ones are very mean, could only take them on 1 at a time. There agro range seems very small and Screaming Terror worked very well to help single pull them. When 2 Necros popped together and put out pets at once that was the end of my fun. Only drop after about 10 kills was the shining stone.

BUT no body i come closer and i see about 3 necros 3 monks and a warrior maybe 2 skele pets, didn't notice i was too busy running and getting pounded. Never ever EVER ***** with these things if you are a pure melee and by yourself... cause.. let's face it you're screwed they run as fast as any sow or bard so the only way to escape is root, snare or gate... of course myself being a warrior all i could do was pray i had enough ac and hp and run... luckily i made it to kith at night... with about 50 hp left.

after reading ALOT of this heres a few things I can add...
I've mostly hunted the ones in InnSwamp. They drop glowing gloves/mask for chanter quests fairly regularly. Also rapiers dont take very long to appear here. There are 6 mobs I believe, unless there are less and they double spawn. I have only seen this spot camped once. Nukes, sow/jboots, OR root is necessary to solo these here,(unless you really want to get frustrated chasing them through water), as they will run, HOWEVER if you let them go, they will only run so far and will stalk back and forth, at this range they can be cast upon, at this point if you are melee SIT, they WILL come back and you can whack em again and hopefully slow em down.

types:

Necro?Wizzy?-(Book and Pet)-Nukes up to 150, fears, engulfing darkness, also dispells: this guy can knock off about 700hp on my 50 War sometimes

Cleric?-(Cone)-small nukes, engulfing darkness-heals himself very well: toughest part about this one is stopping his heals, considerably weaker than Necro, but stronger than Melee

Melee-what can I say, these are np compared to the others, hit for MAX 45pts, usually much less

Good Luck all...
Can I take these guys...

Was wondering whether a 29 Necro would be able to solo these. Thanks.

# Sep 09 2002 at 9:00 PM Rating: Decent
I've been soloing them to some extent with my 29 necro at the Nektulos camp, but it isn't easy and I've died several times. I can take two warriors/monks at once with Screaming Terror and some difficulty, but it's by no means certain, and the necros and priests are nightmarish, so I wouldn't recommend it. I want some friends to help me, but most of all I want a Hand of Shadow so I can leave these fell beings in peace.

I waited at the zone to kithicor and my friend was going to pull. VERY unsuccesful. my friend started to get hammered right by the start when he casted a dd at full range. They have sow or even faster. I just saw my friend's life bar go from full to dead zero.I was a little wayz from the kithicor zone try to find out waht happened then i got hit with a few spells and started to run to the zone.I got feared then stunned and maybe within a min. I was dead. I was SO close to zone! These guys are mean. We might have have gone the wrong way to trying to kill em but these shadowmen are tougher than what they con.

"EAGER LUCLIN ITEM, NOVEMBER 16, 2001
Source: EverQuest Developer's Corner.

Some of you may have discovered this item [Etched Peridot of Nature] recently. It's been found on dead Shadow Men since the last patch. Most likely you are wondering what it is…
It's a mistake.

It's a quest item for Shadows of Luclin that accidentally started showing up on Shadowed Men. It can't be equipped, has no magical bonuses of any sort and is worth only a few gold pieces to merchants.

So with the next patch we are going to delete them completely from the current world. So I suppose it would be a good idea to sell off any that you have before the next patch. Let the merchants take the loss.
