Soloed today as 75 ranger. Just invis down to him and then root and shoot. Easy kill :o)

You can invis right down to Malforus and fight him single in his lair. Killed with a bazaar geared 75/940aa war and 81/800aa druid plus 2 cleric mercs without any difficulty. Nothing special for a level 82 mob that I noticed.
He is snareable and per above posts doesn't summon.

does this guy summon? he hits like a truck and is a pain to pull out, but i can do it as long as he dont summon

Nope. The correct quest is " te talking tree " from the female elf npc at bridge not far away.
The imp for vrald's quest is in other part of the roots, with adds in his room.
