To find these guys I just set up camp at 6000, -800. From there, I pulled anything and everything I could see that was wandering. This included pumas, snakes, beetles, madmen, and zombies of all varieties. Spiders were spawning left and right in those wandering placeholder spots, and it took less than an hour to kill 5 and collect a venom sac on two different characters.
I killed pumas and tada

In North Ro
# Jul 20 2007 at 10:59 AM Rating: Decent
After I killed my fourth giant rattlesnake(for Castlen Drewe quest) and two madmen, these started spawning in North Ro near the last long dune walls in the zone. Took long enough.

I tried killing pumas, zombies, and madmen to get these to spawn. They spawned for me after two madman kills and four giant rattlesnake kills(which also seem rare and took a few large rattlesnake kills to spawn first).

The bugs tend to fight with the NPCs and other mobs like dervish cutthroats, orcs, and the undead. I'm thinking this also makes it difficult to get to them, especially if their spawn points are close to these mobs...

I got mine off the first spider I killed...

But 3 hours later I still have not dropped 5 spiders. I have been killing other things trying to get the spawn table moving. One poster below says the zombies are tied in, if so that might explain my trouble as I was avoiding them.

With crummy gear North Ro is a fun challenge to survive at level 15, when you add in the factor of no one else hunting there so all spawns are up, all wanderers are loose.

If a group went to do the armor quest together and just grinded hard they would probably find the quest easy.

They are not that rare you just cant hunt only them. Kill everything in the zone and they respawn faster. After playing around with it I think they are tied to puma's The more pumas I saw the less spiders. But they may share a spawn table with other mobs also.

Insanely Rare
# Sep 06 2005 at 4:33 PM Rating: Decent
These things are insanely rare when doing the Desert Crawl quest. Took me 5 hrs to get the them, another more for the venom sac. I've /feedback'd it. Hopefully they'll adjust the spawn/drop rate. Because 5+ hrs for a newbie is just retarded.

The hairs are for poison for those that were asking. Can someone confirm what the Thorax and Abdomens are for?

The Chitins ...

The silk is great and the chitin are stupid. I'm still in the dark about the urticating hairs...

The hairs are poison components. If you combine the hairs with a froglok poison gland (in a poison vial with suspension liquid), you make a decent poison.

Spider poison sacks are components for a different poison.

This is a good zone to farm poison making supplies. The vendors even sell sketches to make poison vials. If you come here when people are trying to trigger the AC, there are usually a bunch of un-looted dead spiders all over the place. No to mention the asps which drop poison glands and the undead which drop skins (component for poison vials) and embalming dust (another poison component).

As a level 12 magician hunting in the deserts of North Ro, these dune tarantulas got to be my favorite choice for experience. Using a water elemental, you don't care if they are poison or not. Also those silks are pretty decent loot at that level and stackable.

Hey everyone Im a lvl 12 Dark Elf Magician and these things give great exp. I use Rain of Blades and that spell does 26 damage per 3 wave ,and they die in no time but the problem with that spell is it takes a lot of mana so when i run out i run in and attack with my water pet

I am a lvl 13 mage and never get touched, of course i just use rain of blades(26,26,26) in 1 use and then use shock of blades fora nuke 3dmg each cost only 1/3 a blue mana bulb too my pet comes out at 50%hp and i get silks easily, i mean my pet even if poisoned after a fighti can heal him with renew elements. So apparently my spells help me so much and my pet is my life saver, he takes dmg and hits for 16 bashes 6 and i nuke for 35 ) its a GREAT combination, so if u want to solo, BE A MAGE!
RE: Easy

I'm afraid that you're going to be in for a shock as you level your magician. It gets harder and harder to solo the higher you get, at least to 19. I got my sixteenth level pet and was soloing yellow and the occasional low reds and flying high. At 19th, I'm very careful about what I pick on. If it casts, it better be only one, and blue. While in Everfrost one night, I saw an Orc Shaman that presented a lovely target, so after doing a 360 degree scan for anything that might aggro, I sent the ol' pet in, casting Shield of Fire as he went. I dropped a nuke on the Orc, then started hitting him with Shock of Blades 'cause I prefer the dam/mana ratio, when up pop two more Shaman over the hill. Stupidly, I nuked the first Shaman again, thinking that my high blue con pet could hold out for a few more minutes, so I didn't check his health first. Well, I'm about 20 yards away, and my pet falls to the Orcs. I cast gate, and get about halfway into it before they start bashing my little butt. "Your spell has been interrupted." I think I managed to get about ten feet before "LOADING...PLEASE WAIT..."

And you may also find yourself carrying around a backpack full of Malachite just so you can get the best pet.

But don't get me wrong...I solo'd my way to 19th. I have never been in a group, other than for binds, and my magician is my favorite. It just gets harder and harder to solo.

# Oct 21 2002 at 11:36 AM Rating: Decent
If you want to SOLO pick a necromancer. I play mine all the time. I am level 30 and pretty much solo'ed the whole time. I prefer it to grouping. No worries about bad pulls. the only time i group is when i start hunting a new zone just to get used to the mobs. the pet rocks.

These guys are much better than desert terantulas. They give better exp and are much more reliable for dropping silk.
What are the hairs for?
# Apr 03 2001 at 8:29 PM Rating: Default
Once in a great while I'll finding U-something hairs on these guys - look like silk thread - anyone have any idea what they're for - aren't worth much to merchants, then again, I found the magic shovel component for the earth shovel quest cheap on a merchant once.
Soloing
# Feb 15 2001 at 3:10 PM Rating: Default
I was soloing these critters at 14th with my monk, but I needed full health and my mend to be successful to do it. Their poison can be nasty, but it's short lived. I find the silk drops alot with them. Maybe I'm just lucky with that.
Don't get confused
# Sep 26 2000 at 11:18 AM Rating: Default
Dune tarantulas look just like desert tarantulas.. but their level is a bit higher and their poison's a little stronger. Also, I noticed that the "desert tarantula chitin" these things drop causes a -2 for agility and dexterity. So either don't loot it or sell it right afterwards... don't carry it around :)
