Kill everything
# Dec 02 2022 at 8:52 AM Rating: Decent
As the previous poster mentioned, kill everything if you want Highland Lions to spawn. Another poster mentioned the guards kill some mobs; yes; but guards do not kill Silvermist Wolves. So you need to do that. Round them up and kill them all. Then you'll see other mobs, including Highland Lions, spawn.

So I have read some stuff in comments I want to address.

Mobs in this zone are prone to despawn AND they will sometimes randomly teleport across the zone. I have seen the teleporting across the zone more than despawning.

Getting more lions up. There isn't a static amount that spawn from certain areas. So you can't just come and clear only the Highland Lions and wait for respawns from those. They spawn from all sorts of different areas from all sorts of different mobs. The best way to get a bunch of them is to just kill absolutely everything. I suggest as you track the ones that are up kill everything between yourself and them.

I got about 16 High Quality Lion Skins in 2 days.
now you see it....

The things despawn! I've seen it. Was approaching one and before I could get close enough to kill, it despawns and was replaced by a pincher beetle. Since then I noticed it more often. When they are moving it is fine. But they stop and stand awhile, then poof.
Best information yet! (copied)

Every day I will log in and kill 5 to 8 of these. As long as no one else is killing them, there will be that many up. The reason is simple.
Guard Bartley and Guard Stanard kill 5 to 8 of the Place Holders (PH's) as they wander by. BUT they DO NOT kill the "a highland lion". They let them wander by.
This tell you 1 simple thing, if it roams by the guard house, kill it.

Also, I noted random mobs spawning when I kill "a highland lion" so the PH's are not specific. Even "a hill giant" is a PH. Unfortunately, Guard Bartley and Guard Stanard do not kill them giants so you will have to.

I used track sorted by alpha with Tracking Mastery 5 so I could view the largest possible area. So far, I got 8 pelts in the last 16 days. Not bad, that is a pelt a per 2 day for just logging in and killing nearby the tower. Now to make Prescient Fleeting Quiver and sell in bazaar!

Highland Lions

I've been hunting these with my 73 druid for my rogue's 1.5. Here's what I've found: there are three spawns that always pop every couple of hours, so they are usually up (there's one north-ish, one east-ish, and one southwest-ish), and then there's also a small chance that anything else in the zone can spawn a highland lion. I've found that I get the most spawning by just slaughtering everything that moves, running in big circles around the tower in the middle of the zone. It took me several hours worth of farming to get the first HQ lion skin to drop and am still hunting for another.
random spawn?

Okay, do these guys despawn or not? Because everytime I'm come into this zone there are one or two running around but they drop Ruined Skins and then I wait around forever with no luck.

Trivial for Fleeting Quiver is 222. 60%wt reduction is worth the effort. My 40 Ranger got one in 5 mins there then nothing for 11 more hours. Beginners luck Indeed.

I have been hunting these for a few days now. By accident I saw one spawn at -1845, -143, -6 (approximate). This is just across the road SE of the Guard Tower by the Gypsy Camp. I don't know the timer, but will camp the spot and count it.

i try to get one from time to time with my ranger on the way to EK and from lvl 18 on i had no prob taking 1 or even to at the same time, the prob is that most of them only drop a ruined skin if u r lucky. I have tried many times to sell MQ in the bazaar and no luck there either

ON Vazaelle, they sell for 2000pp. I thought that was crazy, I had one, I knew it was a high demand item; however, I didn't know what price to make it. I saw one individual trying to get 5000pp for it, which was the only reason I set mine for 2000 instead of 200pp...it sold in 40 minutes. I've sold three of them. One I sold for 1000pp, which was sold immediately, and the dude who bought it put it on his vendor for 2000pp. So, that seems to be the going price on Vazaelle.

Lately on Terris-Thule, I've seen the HQ skins going for anything from 5k up to 10k, which is absurd. But then people are also asking 8k-15k for the quivers. I think this is getting a little out of hand. Of course, if the drop rates were more reasonable, more rangers could actually have a nice quiver instead of settling for a tailored quiver or the thunderhoof (assuming they can find the centaur).

As noted elsewhere, the HQ Lion SKINs (not pelts) are used to make Fleeting Quivers (6 slot, 60% wt. reduction, bow haste). The MQ and LQ Skin drops have no use at this time. I sell these as a trader in the Bazaar on Drinal server for 400pp and I've seen other traders offering them for as much as 575pp (don't know if they actually sell them at that price). I've hunted these as both a Warrior and a Ranger and have killed maybe 400-500 and have gotten about 12 HQ Skins. It may be just coincidence, but a lot of people seem to have beginner's luck with these. My Warrior got 3 the first time there and my Ranger got 2. The Highland Lions seem to spawn about 5 or 6 every 15 minutes. Judging from the number of times that I've been jumped by a HL while dispatching a regular Lion, the regular Lions may be placeholders of a sort, although the HL will appear whether you kill Lions or not. If you're competing with a Ranger for these, be aware that he/she is going to get most of them due to Ranger's Track ability. They spawn in a fairly wide radius around the tower, with more spawning East and West than North and South. For chars without Track, I would suggest three possible search patterns: (1) Top of Hill - go from corner to corner on top of the Tower hill and keep a constant surveillance on everything in visual range of the hilltop, (2) Around the Hill - take in a wider radius by going in a circle around the hill - go North just East of the North-South road, then West just North of the East-West road, then South down the valley by the farm, and then East through the valley below the hill, and (3) Stationary - set up on the ridge just West of the farm and watch all around. The only other advice I have is to get a SoW or invest in SoW potions. The Griffs have a small aggro radius, but they're under-conned and some of the named ones like the Silver Griffon can take out the guards. Best chance is to have SoW and run like a bunny.

Just an update on my notes, above. Since that posting I have discovered a use for the MQ and LQ Lion Skins. They can be used in Pottery to make poison vials (also HQ/MQ/LQ Cat/Wolf/Bear, Black Wolf Skins, Thick Grizzly Bear Skins, Zombie Skins and Puma Skins). Poison Vials are a standard item to skill up on in the 149-188 range.

In a recent patch the Highland Lions were made faster. They now run at SoW speed. This can be a problem for a lower-level char if you're running from something like Grimfeather or the Silver Griffin and you pick up one of these as an add. You can't stop to root, snare or fight it and you can't get away from it.

The other consequence of speeding up the HL's is that they now can slightly outrun the guards. The guard tower is left unattended much more often as the guards chase around the zone after the Highland Lions.

One final note - if you're a character with Forage, you can sell the Wild Cabbage and Plains Pebbles in the Bazaar. They're both used in the making of Lucky Cabbage, which is in demand not so much due to its properties as a meal, but rather because it is a quest component for the Protection of the Cabbage quest which yields some excellent earrings (see www.eqtraders.com for details).

I sold one of these last night for 700pp on Sullon Zek at the bazaar. A hafling told me they were worth 1200pp and I couldn't believe it. This after I tried to give it to her and she was nice enough to explain to me the value. I'm such a newbie! But happy for her telling me. She also was a Neut and could have killed me if she wanted to. That's what makes the game so fun on PvP. Surprises.

Don't forget that the actual speed of a SoW depends upon the level of the caster. Unless you are higher level then the mob, it will catch you. While I was ambushed by this critter, I was amazed to see that it can keep up with a lv13 Bard with Selos being sung. I had to twist in my drum to boost my speed so I can make it to the guards.

MQ skins are used for making studded armor, and LQ are used for making bags. they help your tailoring early on. Don't know about HQ.

# Sep 16 2002 at 12:09 PM Rating: Excellent
HQ Lion SKINS are used in tailoring to make Fleeting Quivers. They are rare, and the skill trivs at somewhere like 188 to make the Fleeting Quiver. That is why they sell so high.

All of you are confusing Lion skins with CAT PELTS. It is CAT PELTS that are used for making leather armors. I have found no use yet for ruined, LQ or MQ LION SKINS. Only HQ skins have a use that i know of.

Look out for Highlands
# Feb 20 2002 at 3:52 PM Rating: Decent
I have seen them near the gypsy camp, near the Wizard Spire and near the Druid rings. My level 17 Shaman has no problem rooting one, DOTing it, then bashing it or medding depending on my state of health/mana at the time of the attack. One day on my way to the NK Druid rings for a port I was jumped by one..quickly set about rooting, DoT'ing and blasting when I observed the "A highland lion hits you for 30...", oh yes.. he had a friend. I promptly rooted his friend, backed up, DOT'd, blasted and started to run away as I cannot take 2 (if they come unrooted I am toast because they run as fast as SOW!). I had reached the Druid rings when I see "A highland lion hits you for 15.." hmm.. why can I never find them when I am looking for them, but as soon as I am on a quest for a PORT outta the Karanas they are in abundance. I tried to get a root off.. didn't work and I see "Your root spell has worn off" flash by my screen twice. I promptly shouted for assistance since I knew 2 more would be there shortly.. the situation was quickly resolved by several higher level characters who were hanging around the Druid rings.
OH yes and I have witnessed that they drop Ruined Lion Skins, LQ Lion Skins and HQ Lion skins. Not sure what the LQ skins are for as I was not able to tailor with it (sold for a few gold to a vendor though)...and I auctioned the HQ lion skin and was offered a few hundred plat. SOLD!

While you're right about them being skins not pelts there is no need to be insulting about it. Also the HQ pelts can sell for up to 10pp themselvesSmiley: oyvey, can't remember what they're used for but have sold dozens of them. Good little source of income.
