Nice walk with a shammy buddy for his quest... and bam! Thistle runs by and then comes back. Fight wasn't even close for me (27th Ranger). Ever spell of his stuck, he hits hard and when I finally got him rooted, he just blasted me forever when I ran away. He is a definite under-con. I will have revenge! (later though)

Level 31 druid, with 160ish widsom. Not too bad a kill, He will usually take me to 2 bubbles of health and I'll have 2 bubbles of mana left. I just combust him down with wind thrown in for interrupts. I always have resist fire up and it seems to help since he ignites a lot. He still give exp at 31, I killed him 3 times and got about 3/4 a bubble of exp. 3 kills no cords yet.

do you think it would be possible for a level 26 druid with 153 wisdom could kill thistle underbrush? i dont wanna pay for the cords!

# Apr 10 2001 at 12:43 PM Rating: Default
It would be possible, but not very safe.
Just make sure you are in wolf form.
Snare and Dot and DD till dead.

It would be easier at level 29 since you will have the Combust DD spell. Four Combusts should take care of Thistle.

If at all possible, have gate spell ready just in case you are low on mana and Thistle is still at half life.

Another tip is to mem Cancel Magic. Then try and cast a temporary buff spell on you like shield of thorns so when it wears off, that's where Thistle will put his DoT spell on you if he casts it. Then you can Cancel this dot easy.

Good luck. =)

I am a 35 level druid. I stop by LFay everytime I gate into Faydwer via Steamfont. He still gives exp to me even at level 35.

I know for sure that he is a random spawn. Sometimes he spawns right after you kill him. Sometimes it takes more than an hour before he spawns again. Totally random, but my best guess would be 2 times in an hour ON THE AVERAGE. He does spawn anywhere in the zone, not in one general area.

I've gotten 5 BICs from him through all this time, about 2 months of on and off camping. The BICs sell somewhere between 325pp - 400pp, depending on your server.

That is strange!! My first encounter with Thistle was with my (at the time) 17th lvl ranger. I was at the ranger camp killing Orcs nearby. I was meding after a fight when Thistle started attacking me. The rangers just stood there and watched me die :-( I came back, looted my corpse and started killing the orcs again. Then Whimsy Larktwitter started attacking me while meding. Again the rangers just stood there and watched me die. I lotted my corpse and moved on to safer hunting grounds.

Don't post info on his spawn if you don't know the facts of his spawn. Yesterday, I killed him 4 times in 10 minutes. He is not as rare a spawn as you might think. Of course, I was tired of killing him after the 4th time but he did spawn once again soon after that, I had him on track. He has no definite spawn location because he spawns at 4 different spots randomly. When he spawns he moves across the zone, stops, despawns if untouched, and then respawns at another one of his spots and starts all over again.

# Apr 09 2001 at 5:35 AM Rating: Default
Very Random!! I camped him for two hours this weekend and he did not pop one time!! I have been there and seen him constantly pop. I could be that there is a place holder or something you can kill that makes him spawn. I am not sure. As far as I can tell though it's completly a random spawn time as well as location. Oh well, maybe next time :-(
RE: Come on
# Apr 05 2001 at 8:43 PM Rating: Default
Face it, you got lucky.
I camped him last night for two hours when he finally popped, I tracked and managed to get a lucky ensnare on him so I could keep up. I was barely at 1 bub mana when he popped again. Never saw him again in the next hour. You obviously don't know the facts of the spawn yourself and are typical of a lot of the people on here...those who whine and boast the most are the the ones you least likely want to believe. I fully believe he popped that quickly for you...that's part of a random spawn. Get over it.
RE: Come on
# Mar 27 2001 at 4:26 AM Rating: Default
Sometimes you can go hours without seeing him...and then he'll spawn really quick like Mr. Anon here says. I often find if you check track RIGHT after you kill him he'll be there...too bad you gotta med first...
The Real Deal on Thistle
# Mar 20 2001 at 1:55 AM Rating: Decent
Alright I killed this guy 4 times in 2 hours and heres what I learned...

If you dont have track and sow forget about it (im a lvl 30 druid by the way) meleeing him is prolly impossible because he runs around like crazy

He runs around the zone at random...I was hunting fairies at fairie village and checking track during downtime, so if you sit there, you will eventually find him...

He spawns seemingly at random intervals...I once killed him twice in a 20 minute period...he showed up on track about 4 minutes after I killed him...

Most of his spells are fire based, the first time I fought him he took me down to half a bulb...the other 3 times I put up resist fire and ended fight with more then 50% hp...just stand there and nuke and dot...dont bother snareing or rooting as it wont work...

I wish you luck!

UPDATE----Killed him a few more times, once a brownie scout joined in and they got me...brownie scouts always leave me alone in wolf form, so I guess they assist each other. At this point I have killed Thistle about 23 times and got 4 braided Ivy cords, which easily sell for 300-400pp on my server (hint- TP to misty thicket or rivervale...lots of druids there, plus its about as far from LFay as you can get. I sold 3 in Rivervale at one time with 14 people in zone)

I have to say that if you are not twinked at level 25, do not attempt this guy. I went to location neg500, pos500 and started tracking this guy. I had all of my buffs on, and I have a wisdom of 139 from items I worked hard to get. I finally caught up with him and snared him, then proceeded to have the spell vs spell contest. He hits in the 50's when he does hit you, and he casts his form of ignite and other dd spells, and he damage sheilds himself. I used lightning and dizzying wind, and creeping crud while meleeing him to try and disrupt his spells. He only resisted Dizzying wind once, and I almost got killed him. I was so close, and I was expecting him to start walking away, but he does not. This little brownie will fight to the bitter end. I died that time, and decided that I would try again. I got my body, redid all my buffs, and this time damage sheilded myself, and didn't bother with snare since I figure he isn't going to run. Again hit him with dizzying wind, crud, and lightning, rinse and repeat. I got him all the way down to him being almost dead again, and I ran out of mana. If only I had one more spell!!
Anyway this time he rooted me when he had but a sliver of life, backed up and kept casting his ignite spell till I was dead. I hope this helps anyone going after him. I lost a bit of experience, but that's the way it goes. He is too fast to kite well, even with snare on, but just remember that this guy will fight you till either you or he drops! I am going back to Warslik's till 27 and then I am going after this little guy again. Happy hunting.

How & Where to kill Thistle
# Feb 20 2001 at 11:44 AM Rating: Good
I am a level 30 druid. I have camped Thistle Underbrush for about 5 hours. I killed this little fella 8 times. Here is how I did it and where:

Thistle’s spawn rate:
About 17 minutes on the average. This is a random spawn rate though. He could pop up again right after you kill him. It happened to me so that’s why I know. On the other hand, he did not spawn for 45 minutes after he popped up twice. It is safe to assume he will spawn at LEAST twice in one hour.

Thistle drops:
He drops the Pouch of Mistletoe Powder that has the Befriend Animal effect. Sells for around 3pp to merchants also. This is the common drop.
The rare drop is the Braided Ivy Cord which has 4ac and +5wis. Good for Druids, Bards, and Enchanters.
Of the 8 times that I killed him (4 times with the help of a lvl 27 magician), he dropped the pouch 7 times. The last 3 kills was mine solo. He dropped the Cord on my 8th try.

How to kill Thistle:
First, I bound myself in Gfay near the entrance to Lfay. Then I buff myself up with all the resist and endure stuff I got. Med till Fm. I zone in to Lfay and turn into a wolf and then camo myself. I head to the spot in the general area of where he spawns. While waiting for him, I always hit Track (druids and rangers only) so I know when he pops up. While waiting, I just practice my foraging and sense heading skills until Thistle pops up. When he pops, I track him down, when I find him I hit my LOC hot key twice so in case I die I know where to retrieve my corpse. First I snare him and let everything in my ******* fly. DoT with Creeping Crud, Immolate, then Combust, Dizzying Wind until dead. I try to save enough mana to heal myself from his DoTs and be able to gate out to Gfay zone. I loot his corpse and gate to bind area. BTW, I have never died fighting him.
Note: If you are in wolf form, the brownie scouts will not attack you even after you kill Thistle. I know because they just zipped by me after I killed Thistle.

Where is Thistle:
I managed to hit Loc before I attacked Thistle 4 out of the 8 times I saw him. He spawned in these locations:
pos948,neg1385 pos1234,neg1089 pos1300,neg1317 pos568,neg350

My suggestion is to wait at loc pos500,neg500. This will put you in the middle of his spawn area. Unless you are a druid or ranger, it would really help if you had one with you to track him. This little critter moves fast.

Last suggestion: Just be patient and you’ll get the Cord. On a scale from 1 to 10, I’d rate this experience an 8.
Good luck and safe travels.
Update No. 2

If you plan on camping Thistle, be ready for long waits.

Here is a simpler plan to get him. The reason I know is because I've camped this little bugger on and off for a month now.

1) On your way to GFay, don't port to BB but port to SF. This way, you get to stop by LFay, change to wolf form if you are a druid, buff yourself up, track Thistle, snare, nuke till dead.

2) Thistle spawns not at a certain location, but mostly on the "right" side of LFay. Just be ready to start running all over the zone chasing him down once you get him on track.

3) I'm level 35 now, and with ensnare and Fury of Air combined with Combust, he drops like a ton of bricks. No need to DoT him at this level. And YES, he still gives me EXP at level 35. Incredible little bugger. I've gotten to know him quite well. :)

4) I have gotten 2 BIC from Thistle. So yes, this item drops randomly and rarely.

Good luck!

In addition to my above post, while waiting for Thistle you can also camp the bandit sisters (if available). I suggest you can try this only if you are familiar with the Lesser Faydark.

This way, while Thistle is not up yet, you can hunt the bronze weapons the sisters drop. I made about 35pp in an hour and a half just doing this.
Extra pp and a chance to get the Braided Ivy Cords plus exp from killing Thistle Underbrush.

I recommend this only if you are between level 29-32 solo.

P.S. - If you are a druid, stay in wolf form so the brownie scouts don't aggro on you.
Only kill him at 30 then?

That sounds about right. I don't remember seeing the outcast the first time I killed Thistle (I got the rune and the BIC) but Bracken(sp?) Underbrush appeared on my tracking. After chasing him down I found he was much, much easier than Thistle, getting mistletoe powder. Tried to see if it would work again but instead Thistle appeared on tracking again just as soon as I killed him (I got powder and ivory this time) but due to ranger luck, a brownie scout happened by and teleported me to my bind point. I chased Thistle all around the tower but didn't run into the outcast.
Nope...

Unless the Outcast despawns within 2 mins of popping, they both can be up at the same time. I passed the outcast on up because he was a yellow and I am not ready to exact revenge on him yet. I just now dispatched Thistle for the third time in an hour and he finally dropped his stingy streak and gave me some cords! I shouted the loc of the rune and left my mesh mantle there as a bonus to the lucky tracker.

I saw this guy running through LF faster than a bullet and he was blue to me as a Lvl 27 Enchanter. I had my pet up and SOW so I chased him halfway through the zone deciding whether to fight him. In the end, I had killed him with about 20% health left. However, his DOTs were so strong I died quickly, right next to his corpse.
I was bound close by in the same zone, so I ran over to find our two corpses. All he had was the Rune and a Pouch of Mistletoe Powder. Heck of a chase and fight.

Ranger rune on him both times for the ivy tunic which i have. WOW a ranger with a pet!!!! He was a close fight for my 32 ranger and I suggest using a firesheild and root or snare because hell run!!

At 31 He is such a wuss.
He doesn't run at SoC Speed but it seems like it at lower levels.
I can catch up with him in wolf form easly.

With only 150 Wis I can burn his little butt with only 2 1/2 bubbles of mana.

Just melee him and keep casting combust and soon he'll be one dead brownie! ?=)

A level 35 druid of mine killed him easily, later, a brownie scout comes charging over a hill and beats the heck out of me...he conned red. I don't know if the scout's spawn was related to thistle's, but if you ever kill thistle, my advice would be to get the heck out of the zone.

One good thing about the scouts, I don't think they can see through camo, not positive about this but I am pretty sure. I had just completed a corpse run in the middle of the zone, recast camo, and one came running right past me and didn't attack.

The brownie scout is a roaming PoS. Killed my lvl25 pally in under 40 secs.

I've been told that it follows the path of another mob that walks around lfay. I can't remember who the other one is tho.

I got jumped about 500locs away from the gfay zone so watch out cos you dont have to be near the brownie camp to get jumped by this guy...

The sec he popped Thistle came out of no where and rooted him. He didn't do anything else, he rooted Glyndur Tindel/healed my pet the whole battle. I was expecting him to rip through me the second the fight was over (only level 24, he con yellow and unhappy!) but he just ignored me. When the ranger died (I got exp) he jusst walked off. freaked me out. Got a easy kill, used no mana and pet came out of it with full health (thistle did NOTHING but chain cast heal/root)

# Aug 31 2000 at 10:38 AM Rating: Default
I'm a 29 druid. I have killed him many many times. I track him then before he can agro on me I cast stinging swarm. By the time he gets to me I cast Immolate on him. Then melee and nuke him. If I am full mana and full health I never die.

From what I've heard he spawns 30 seconds after dying unless his PH spawns. But no one knows what his ph is. But thats just what I've heard.

After camping him for about a total of 24 hours I got 12 cords.

A 27 druid friend has been camping him lately. He can always kill Thistle before he dies, but has died a few times from the DoT left over.

# Aug 30 2000 at 11:10 AM Rating: Default
I had the pleasure of encountering Thisle the other day in Lesser Faydark. I had just come off a fight with a very difficult Shadowed Man cleric, so I was low on mana, and had used my lay hands.

Thisle attacked me, as a green con (I am lvl 35 paladin.) I could stun him to interrupt many of his spells, but several got through.

The little green-con bugger almost killed me! I know that people say you should nuke this guy, but as you may know, unless it's undead, a paladin has no DD spells at lvl 35.

I killed him with about half a bub of health left, but I still had stinging swarm on me. It ran out when I had about 1/4 bub left...

He dropped the braided ivy cords though. So a tough firhgt, but it was a profitable one.

Like most mobs in EQ, this guy is tough if you're a melee class, and much easier if you're a caster.

Thistle is definitely still spawning. I was happily medding with a pet standing guard. I hear combat, close the books, and next thing I know I'm zoning to my bind point. I think I got one melee hit in as the DoT chewed me alive. :(

In return for unprovoked injustices inflicted on me as a lower-teens level druid, I have crushed this little punk repeatedly since attaining 28th level. He often spawns between the brownie village and the dervish cutthroat camp, then runs around until he finds the ranger camp and gets squashed. He does not have spirit of the cheetah - that spell only lasts 30 seconds anyway - because you can run him down with SoW or wolf form. He is easier to kill than he might otherwise be because he chooses his spells poorly...he will often cast the same DoT three times in the same fight, and will root you once or twice. Who cares about being rooted if you're just planning to stand there and fight anyway? His fire spell is called 'Ignite,' but it's not the same Ignite players get. I would estimate it does at least 90 points of damage based on my health loss when he lands it on me. Also uses cancel magic, which is as irrelevant as his root if you're just going to stand toe to toe and nuke. Have killed him 11 times, 3 Braided Ivy Cords, 8 pouches of Mistletoe Powder.

To Ranger, 2 posts above...my conquests of Thistle all have occurred within the last 5 days, so he does still spawn. In fact, I have found him to be the most common of all the 'rare' spawns in the game. Be patient, he will spawn, and don't be surprised if you kill him, hit track, and he is already up again.
