Ok, I've been trying to complete the Torch of Alna quest and all I need is a Fire Drake Scale from a Fire Drake in Lavastorm to complete it on the Progression server (Combine server). I've been playing EQ since 2000 and a mage since then also so this quest isn't new to me. What is new is that all of the Fire Drakes seem to have disappeared from Lavastorm on the Progression Server. I've spent the last two nights looking for them and OOC'ing about them. In addition, I've been checking all of the merchants in Lavastorm for a scale and haven't seen anything. Has anyone else seen them and I just have really bad timing or are they truely gone right now?
Was running through with my sisters level 32 mage to get her the last piece of her last focus item. killed the first drake i saw and got a scale, drake lava powder, and a putrid bile.
This is the second part of a quest starting in Neriak for trolls. I think the third is looted from a willowhisp in WC. You might check the quest infos to get more precisions.
do these drop any drake eggs... because of the May 8th patch with all the new recipes, drake eggs were added to the clump of dough line, so if anyone could inform me if they have always been dropping them, if they don't drop them, or if they just started to, or what. Any info would be appreciated
i guess the loot has changed a bit....I was camping near Lavastorm ent. with my group(2 wizzies, chanter and warrior, lvl 7-8) and all we picked up from 4 drakes was 1 carnelian, and a couple Putrid Bile....
I also connot find these scales after hunting them for several hours. Putrid bile seems a common drop. Does anyone know if these scales are a rare drop?
These guys aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be - my 9th level troll shadow knight was able to beat the heck out of these things wearing just leather armor and using a 2H sword (regular - not fine or magic).
Most of them conned black or yellow, so I only screwed with the black ones. Hunting was achieved by nailing one with an arrow or two, tap him with Syphon Strength to weaken him and strengthen me, disease cloud between hits to give him a DoT and then just keep tapping him with Lifespike (or whatever the name of my 9th level DD spell was).
They give great XP, fantastic loot for my level (close to 1pp in coin and items) and the way I was fighting them, I only had to stop to restore my mana on occasion.
So why didn't I keep doing it indefinately? The @#$%! elementals and fire imps kept tearing me a new one.
I'm 12th now and am thinking about comming back for another shot as these guys - especially since I'm now in good with an enchanter and these boys drop gems every once in a while.
This is a low level poison ingredient that your neighborhood rogue would like to have. How thoughtful it would be to pick up a few of these to fill a bag and give them as a gift. Or sell them at the highest bid in Freeport. Either way you'll make a friend and buddy for life.
Obviously not Ignite, it gets resisted lots. The Whatever Wind spell is ok, but I always hate those all or nothig resists.
However... =) If you have your conjuration up, I found these guys REALLY susceptible to the Grasping Roots/Swarm strategy. Hardly any downtime with that, pretty safe, and you get your DOT doing full dmg. I medded at the druid ring (lots of high lvls around there so lots of free buffs/clarity =D ), then I would pull and kill along the zone wall just below the ring. Quite easy, I never once got an aggro from a wanderer, and its a good distance from any of those pesky lava pits!
I agree!! Snare, Root, Stinging Swarm, med. Reroot and add stinging swarm again if they wear off. Usually takes me two stinging swarms then I can finish with melee or the wind spells. I did not fight by the rings but I imaging if you did and got breeze and/or clarity it would make life just grand :-)
Small groups of 8-12 L characters can avoid the crowds in the Commons for exp -- pull to the entrance and kill (L10 Nec and L10 Wiz made a killing there). Always lots of them, and rarely competition -- just be a little careful with your drag to avoid higher level nasties
Yes, that is right. I have been soloing these things with my pet (i'm an SK) since lvl 11 (i'm 13 now). Just make sure that you con for blue, choose a single one and engage it close to the zone.
This also works with rock dervishes and low level elementals too. Even lava basilisks, but their stun or root or whatever is a pain.
they con green but give xp to me at 17. the obsidian gems and drake scales are worth 4gp plus with my 45 cha at Gypsies and weigh .1 ea. stackable. You can make some money fast killing lots of these.
I would also like to add that out of courtesy, you should try to fight these away from other people's pets. If another person's pet is within ranger when a fire drake casts it's spell, it will cause the pet to go aggro on the drake.
Their fire effect, though it doesn't do that much damage, relatively, is an area effect, so any mobs near you when fighting a drake will join and kill the drake, and take the kill. So, if you pull drakes, pull them away from lava crawlers, and other stuff.
