We fought him 5/13/05, he was blue to me, a 65th level monk. We followed Kaelaelae's advice about wiping all monsters, then druid summoned pet and we found him in just a few minutes in the circular room. He kept knocking me back and up in the air then summoning, so it was an odd fight. He enrages. Good hunting to you!

Figured this one out with a group today. Here's how to take the mystery out of finding the Kirin.

Smiley: bowdown Bring a pet class along on the mission.

If anyone remembers the old "Pet Point" trick we pet classes used to find the dwarf for the Velious port potion that is what I used. We found this works best if you kill everything in the zone first so your pet doesn't point at the mobs. All you do after killing all the mobs is go to the stairs with your pet and tell your pet to guard. The pet will point in the direction of the nearest "footprint" or trigger. Go in the direction the pet points until you get the footprint message and your pet will point to the next one. You may need to move the pet around to find them all since some are in side rooms.

Eventually the pet will point you at the north wall of the stairs room and you can't go where the pet indicates on the 1st floor. Go upstairs and repeat the trick. You will eventually be led to the circular room and if you continue finding the footprints Kirin will spawn. Be ready because he will agro right away.

This pet point method can take a bit of time since there are quite a few triggers but it will work and will stop alot of the frustration on this mission. Good luck.

This has to have been the most infuriating mission I've been on.

You have to pull every last bit of the zone, and kill it, before the kirin will spawn. Some of the triggers will not trigger until that is done. Next, you have to trigger each "track" in a very particular order, often times 2 or 3 in one room, and sometimes you'll have to revisit the room. This is a cool mission, I like the concept of the mission... its just HORRIBLY HORRIBLY carried out.

Oh, one thing to watch out for is that the kirin has a rather weak gravity flux spell. Mostly just annoying, and makes it hard to keep taunt. Its no harder than a regular mob from the mission besides that though.

My recommendation if you're reading this before you start the mission is to CHOOSE ANOTHER. Its so infuriating and LONNGG even with this information. I would rather do Grounding the Drakes three times than this. It would be faster and you'd get twice as many crystals...

You do not need to kill any mobs in order to trigger this guy. A rogue with SoS (very useful for this task) can walk through hitting all the trigger points. A very useful tip, have that rogue mark all those trigger points on their map for the next time through.

How I do it...
Kill the four stationary guardians that are in the entry courtyard.
Kill other stuff around the courtyard as necessary to get into the building. Note - only the guardians see invis.
Move into the building.
Kill the two guardians as the bottom of the stairway.
Kill the guardian that wanders up and down the stairs and upper hallway.
Kill the drake that wanders the upper hallway.
Kill the four guardians in the circular room (at end up upstairs hallway).
Have rogue with SoS or chanter/cleric using pacify (much harder using pacify, but still doable) hit all the trigger points up to final room.
Have tank hit trigger points in final room to spawn Elusive Kirin.
Kill Elusive Kirin.
Loot book.
Turn in book.
Receive Token and Cyrstals.
Repeat.

I six box my group through here and it takes me about an hour to complete. This task is easy to do. All you need are the right mix of classes (ie rogue w/SoS) and one or two times through learning the lay of the land.

Thank you so much for posting this! My group was doing this adventure, and we just thought clearing the zone would pop the kirin... obviously, wrong. So we did that and were lost, and then I looked here with 45 minutes left and saw your great post! Thankfully, our healer was a dru, so he got out his little bear pet, and we finished the adventure easily.
Locations?

Anyone know where exactly this mob hangs out the most? Since it's not trackable are there other tricks other than the emots and "foot prints" to find it easier?

The Elusive Kirin is a pain to find. Here’s what my group learned from the mission.

You need to trigger messages about kirin footsteps. You will not see any of these messages until you open the door at the end of the long hall with all the stone guardians. Opening the door will trigger the first message. After that you need to run around to trigger more of the same footstep messages. The kirin will spawn upstairs. If you’re at the stop of the stairs, facing down the hall, he spawns in the room at the end of hall. This is the room with the four stone guardians in it. We saw the footstep messages in the long hallway with the stone guardians, in the room with the stairs, in the two adjacent rooms to the stairs, in the hallway leading to the kirin spawn room, and in the two rooms along that hallway. We never saw any messages in the front courtyard, in the garden area, or in the area past the door you need to open to trigger the messages. Just run around the rooms to trigger the messages. At some point when you’re running around in the kirin spawn room, he’ll spawn and say something about “You’ve found me”. Then he’ll attack. He’s a little stronger than the other mobs in the zone and hit in the high 600’s (average group level was 66). This mission seems bugged as it can take a VERY long time to get him to spawn. We ended up killing every mob in the zone. Even then it took about an hour to get him to spawn. We almost gave up a few times, but then we would get another footstep message. Hopefully this information will help others spend less time on this painful mission.
