Sixth Anniversary Quillmane

Hihi

I got Quill to spawn tonight using my variation of the non-macroquest normal track method. As already mentioned max damage in the high 200's/low 300's. Just last week I had spawned regular Quill 20 times in an evening for a few friends, so I'm pretty burnt out. Although I only managed one fabled spawn tonight, typical Quill rules apply.

If anyone is still having problems getting Quillmane to spawn, feel free to send a cross-server tell or mail to Emori on Legends/Stormhammer. I'd be most happy to assist (please have a well-trained tracker nearby.

Best of luck to all!

Hihi again

I've been contacted alot regarding this post, so I felt that I should perhaps just explain my method here. Alot of people seem to have problems duplicated my strategy, so please bare with me:

My method is a variation of a method posted on Allakhazam under the regular quillmane some 9 months ago, the major variation is in the listed place holders and the location of some spawns.

Typically this is how I go about camping and spawning quillmane:

1. I zone into South Karana and usually have someone waiting. I have them zone into splitpaw and then click my track to normal.

2. I proceed to splitpaw and stand at the southern side directly in the middle facing south (using sense heading). Directly behind me is a trench (to which I think leads the entrance, but I'm tired and don't want to give bad info).

3. I sit at the southern end twiddling my thumbs until I spot something heading directly for me moving towards due north. 90% of the time they are moving in such a way that they will actually pass right through me. I kill this npc and proceed to watch my normal track.

4. I check normal track every few seconds. The person who I am using as my track marker is on top until something spawns in place of the npc I have killed. I proceed to kill that npc and more often or not, Quillmane will spawn within four or five rounds max. Sometimes quill does not spawn, so I move back to the center and kill something else. Since I'm killing two things in an empty zone, two npcs will appear above normal track. I pursue them ad nauseum. Eventually some sort of named will spawn from any of the non-static npcs in that zone (from my experiences anyway). If a named spawns, I disregard them and proceed to killing another npc.

5. The real trick is getting Quillmane to spawn once. Once I have him up, I have the marker zone in and out of paw, then we kill QM. I will then check normal track for things that appear above my track marker and pursue them. Sometimes Quill pops as his own placeholder, that is, two quill spawns in a row. I've seen as many as three in a row. However, using this method and providing that nobody else in the zone is killing, you should nail a quill-spawn fairly regularly.

Notes:

1. Nameds are not a quillmane spawn, nor are any gnolls except an escaped splitpaw gnoll and POSSIBLY a splitpaw gnoll. In my 100+ hours in SK, I have only seen a splitpaw a handful of times and only once as a potential ph.

2. Aviaks and Centaurs of all varities (except aviak avengers) have the possibility of being placeholders from my experience.

3. There is alot of debate as to whether place holders spawn in the north. I have seen Quillmane pop just north east of paw with my own eyes, but even I am skeptical as 9/10 times the placeholders and Quillmane are typically in between paw and the Aviaks or between the Hermit and Aviak tree.

4. Alot of this is hit and miss. Since my placeholders are always intercepted running northward, I'm led to believe they must despawn at some point, unless they circle around again. I typically spend about an hour trying, unless I have absolutely nothing else to do, then I come back another day.

5. The most important information to be gleaned from my post or any Quillmane walkthroughs is the knowledge that Quillmane can be repeatedly and deliberately spawned over and over again in relatively short intervals. Therefore, if someone was to fail at using my method and perhaps have their guild wipe the entire zone, eventually getting quillmane to spawn, using step number five would allow them to repead the spawning process. This will come in especially handy given the terrible cloak-to-leggings ratio many experience.

5a. I am fortunate that very few people frequent South Karana on my server and it no doubt explains much of my success without using timers. I would recommend doing this late or night, or doing as I did my first night of spawning, offering individuals free cloaks for allowing me to continue my work.

Conclusion, etc:

While I admit there is perhaps, much to be desired from my simple walkthrough, I like to think that it is a springboard for helping individuals develop their own spawning tactics, if they so-wish to repeat the process. Ideally, a tracker who is leaving the zone would point out the ph for the incoming tracker while their marker is zoning into paw.

Please be warned, killing quillmane is rather addictive. I have done so perhaps 150 times in my 200+ hours spent "working the spawns" and I have become relatively well known for my so-called "ability" for doing so. What I enjoy the most is calling an epicless mage or a lev-clicky seeking individual and telling them "Help yourself, no charge." It's a really good feeling, especially given the hours people have poured into this horse only to come up empty. They paved the way for individuals like myself, I have no doubt.

Anyway, I hope this assists those still seeking QM. If anyone has specific questions, they are welcome to contact me. Actually, if anyone is using my method to the letter and having extreme difficulty, I will likely come to their server myself and instruct them personally, but they better have bone chips ready!

As a final note, if you are an epicless mage on the Stormhammer server, feel free to contact me for a free pegasus cloak mq, I have several banked.

Best of luck to all

A Friend and I have hunted many cloaks and we usally use the same process. I just saw the recent post about the 94 sec timer and we are gonna try, but what we do is hit mobs around its level , bull elephants , escaped gnolls , treants yada ya, this may be irrelivent as stated by the recent post yes , but never the less, every time we got the cycle to spawn the gnoll shaman line Quillmane would pop soon after. /shrug. One rememberable night , him and I hunted for 9 hours and nothing, then it spawned ..dropped cloak ..one popped 1 min after ( prolly due to what the 94 sec timer post was refering to) and the 2nd droped a cloak also :) ..then as we were celebrating on teamspeak ..a third poped ..and um ..it dropped a 3rd cloak ..:/ ..I dunno how we got so lucky but it happened. This info may not be the true way to spawn it ect , but wanted to share our expierences in hopes it might help some peeps out , and/or give them more faith on the cloak dropping, i belive its a 10% chance ..but i have personaly assassinated around 10 Quillmane's all together and cloak dropped of 8 of em /shrug prolly lucky but its the truth...have fun ,

It was insane, but today (the 15th of April 2004) we got three fabled quillmanes in the zone in under 10 minutes. First spawned and was killed, second spawned about 1 minute later and was killed by a different group than got the first, then another minute after that a third one spawned! Was quite the party going on.

I must be very lucky but last night I got the Fabled Quillmane to spawn while playing my alt. So I log on my main and killed her got the fabled cloak.

Then I went in the paw to see if anyone killing the fabled paw for the robe of ishva, but someone camping it. I then went outside the paw(less than 1 min after I went in), hit the track and woot another Fabled Quillmane! I killed it and got another cloak for my alt. What the best night for me!

On the side note, it appears to me that the Fabled Quillmane spawn just south of the gnoll pires cause I got it pop there at that same location twice.
After a 35 hour camp, my 2cp!

From what I've read, everyone seems to have their theories as to what spawns and does not spawn Fabled Quillmane. I would like to chime in with my experiences, and hopefully add a bit of clarity to what is a confusing, and frustrating experience for many people.

Firstly, I camped Fabled Quillmane for 35 hours non-stop. I was well beyond the point of frustration, and I was convinced the spawn was broken. Anyway, I tried every suggestion listed. I tried mass slaughter, I tried only killing the top, most freshly spawned mobs on track. I tried only killing around Paw. You name it, I tried it and nothing happened for 35 hours. Then something very odd happened...

First Fabled Quillmane spawned at roughly pos 1400, neg 1500 (NW of the Centaur Village). As soon as the corpse hit the ground, another one spawned immediately! I tracked it and he was sitting stationary at neg 3300, pos 2500 (due west of Paw by about 2000 distance) I dispatched of this second Fabled Quillmane and guess what? Number 3 spawned no more than a minute later! I tracked and again it was stationary at neg 6200, neg 1000 (slightly NE of the Aviak Village)

Anyway, no spawns for 35 hours, then 3 spawns all in completely different areas in roughly 4-5 minutes. I was glad the camp was over, but I left baffled at how odd the RNG can be at times. I learned that although everyone has their own theory, that's all it is, a theory. I'm convinced it's completely random as far as spawn location and spawn method goes. Mass killing anywhere in the zone certainly seemed to help me by the time everything was all said and done.

Oh, grats to a cleric and Paladin on the two cloaks! The zone was practically empty at the time and I'm glad these cloaks didn't rot. Their gratification made the 35 hour camp worthwhile. :)

I hope anyone reading this finds this post informative. Good luck!

Perhaps the spawn time includes a few spawns after a long wait? the same exact thing happened to me...as soon at quill died, another spawned, and after that died, another in about 5 minutes.

your /locs also match mine pretty closely.
4 pops in 4 hours :)

There is not a spawn timer of any sort involved on this one. my grouped killed him last night only to have him respawn almost immediately.

There is definitely some validity to the theory that says you kill things that walk north/south through splitpaw (mostly lions/wolves, a few elephants and centaurs, and also escaped gnolls). I think this works well enough because last night in 4 hours my group killed 1 Fabled Grizzlenot and 4 Fabled Quillmane's (dead serious). considering how rare it it, it's good enough evidence for me. i've noticed that the very last PH seemed to be a lion or lioness that comes running out of the north directly toward the center of splitpaw. an elephant also takes this path. oh, and we were killing gnolls too.

I've killed Fabled Quill 5 times total now, and he's dropped 5 fabled cloaks and 2 regular cloaks, so 2 mages in my guild got their epic item. Fabled Quill seems to spawn much more than the regular quill (i have never even seen the actual quill), so if you are a mage you've got a small chance of a regular cloak on this one.

By the way, if you have a wizard with the staff of temperate flux you are invulnerable to this guy. i'm currently a 37 wiz and can't land spells because quill resists too much, but i can draw serious aggro with the staff while my group nukes it/beats on it. make sure your wizard has sow (my jboots are too slow) and he is a good kiter. quill plowed me over on my first try but unfortunately for him i was bound at splitpaw...since then he hasn't touched me. :)

But the level is wrong. Fabled quill conned db to my 56 druid. Routinely hit for 308. Quill didn't summon, but it sure felt like it. One sec, quill is at max range, the next I'm being clobbered. No message that I was summoned. As long I as ran, with soe, quill never caught up.

**edit** Forgot that the last patch changed all levels of fabled creatures to match difficulty!

She spawned tonight around 1:45 a.m. EST just west of Split Paw. I had been hunting for her on and off for about a week with no siting of her or the fabled version. You can imagine my surprise and excitement when I saw her on track!! Unfortunately, someone got to her 1st.Smiley: disappointed Anyway, turned out to be a lot harder than he thought she would be, so we worked together. In the end, his 47 ranger had about 20% health and my 51 druid had a whopping 2%! I spent the next 4 1/2 hours trying to find her again. (someone said her spawnrate was every 2 hours???) -- killed everything in sight; no Quillmane & no Grizzlenot. Smiley: cry

Good luck!

He spawned tonight by the N spire and flew in and around the paw entrance. I would take a few healing buddies along. Hits for 308 and has about 6.5K hp. Not your regular Quill. . . but neither is the Fabled Cape.

There is no method to spawn Quillmane aside from killing any and all wandering mobs (Brother Qwinn excluded).

Slaughter all roamers: Wolves, Centaurs, Elephants, Gnolls, Lions, Aviaks. You have a chance to get a rare mob. Escaped Splitpaw Gnolls are the most common, guessing around 40% chance. Quillmane is closer to a 1 or 2% chance. All other named are in between these two.

So yes, just kill regular mobs, keep checking tracking and depending on how fast you can kill, you will see Quillmane.

quillmane was in the game long before the mage epic existed, and if I remember correctly they actually increased his spawn time when the epics first went in (might be wrong on that part, but I vaguely remember reading that somewhere)

I camped fabled quill with just me and no tracker. In 8 hours he spawned 3 times, the first two were killed by other people who got to him first and the third by me, dropped both cloaks. all 3 sightings were at paw.

So he spawns at the SplitPaw ent? I take it he must be camped often, an all/all cloak with Lev is something worth the effort. If he doesnt camp right at the ent, anyone have his Loc?

Hello again

I've received quite a few mails thanking me for my posted strategy. I've received some asking for help because my strategy isnt working. I argue against anyone who says there is no strategy. If you wipe the zone, that is in fact, your strategy.

As my post implied, I was hoping my method to become a springboard, not the end all and be all of quillmane. I don't think there ever will be one set method for spawning him, but I may be wrong.

Since I've experienced great success with my method, I'm going to hold a couple of sessions on the test server to explain my initial pop theory. With testbuff I can, hopefully, kill the placeholders, but killing quill will be out of the question unless /testbuff has been raised from when I was last there.

If any of you are interested in coming for this little session, please eqmail me. What I will not do is defend my method against every other method: Different things work for different people. If you spam type the /flip social and it spawns quillmane, well, then I applaud you. This should not take more than 60 minutes and I can only do one or two sessions per week until the fabled mobs end.

It's not much, but I'm doing everything I can to help. If any of you end up at the legends server, I'll get you a cloak myself.

Regards
