Wisps require magic weapons to be hit. Wisps are non-aggressive, however they are extremely sociable.

The three variants of lightstones that they carry are excellent lightsources for humans and the other blind races.

Actually, I have backstabbed a wisp in the past.
Once its health dips low and it begins to run,
it's wide open for backstab.

As a magician with an elemental who has an inherent magic melee attack, I've been cutting down wisps in East Commonlands since there were my level. Now that I'm level 20, I still like to blow through there cutting up anything that glows. Why? Because they do in fact yield Greater Lightstones along with the regular ones. I've farmed wisps for cash, and it seems that the GLs probably appear about 1 in 8 or 1 in 10, while the regulars come by about 1 in 3 or 1 in 5.

Tip: loot and destroy those No-Drops because the wisp corpse looks just like the live wisps. (I hate wasting time checking targets only to find them dead.)

Greater lightstones are the rare drop off of these, regardless of their location. My brother got a GLS off of one in EC, so they do drop them there. If you didn't get one, you just didn't kill enough. Burned out are very common, lightstones are less common, and greater lightstones rare. You have to kill more than a handful before you say something isn't dropped, just because it hasn't dropped yet doesn't mean it never will, it's probably just a rare drop.

my 20 warrior was hunting in NK and killed wisps on site. i got TONNES of GLS this way, 10 gls, 7 LS and 2 burnout. so i dunno if i was real lucky, or maybe NK drops more GLS> who knows? maybe the Tribunal server just drops heaps.

well my warrior had bad CHA and the GLS only sold for a couple of plat each, and considering i could just goto SK and kill aviaks and get a whole bunch more plat than from these GLS, i considered it not worth hunting the wisps. the HIGH greens believe it or not still gave me some exp at lvl 20, altho i didnt see a difference in the exp bar. at 21, they stopped giving exp to me.

a couple plat from the GLS was nothing compared to my loot after the aviaks. all the bronze weapons, plat off the birds, gems and little totems/amulets, at the end of a trip to chicken city, got me about 50p altogether for a couple of hours hunting. there is also one single gem i only ever looted once from one of the aviaks that sold for 15 platinum by itself with bad CHA!! it was a gem and was called a black sapphire or 'Black somthing' and i believe it was a rare drop gem from the birds anyways...

so when you hit 20 go visit chicken city and you might be surprised how much plat from loot you will get.

Not true. I just killed 7 of them in EC. I got 1 GLS. 4 LS. and 2 Burned out. So EC is fine for hunting them it would seem to me.

these things are cheap. I looked around and saw only one. I ran up to it, looked around again and saw only it. I hit it and like 3 seconds there after 3 of them are on me. well, I run to guards. they ignore me. and the willowwisps kill me. oh by the way, you need a magical weapon to kill one. I saw one blue to me so
I ran up and tried to hit it with my old rusty long sword. he is INVOULNERABLE! so he still kills me. watch it out there.

Wisps have to be one of the most interesting creatures in Norrath...we all seem to get the urge to just beat one down if it walks by you, even level 60s do it when they pass one. Funny thing about them is the lightstones (LS) are pretty rare and the greater lightstones (GLS) are even more rare while those burnt out lightstones seem to always be around.

I guess the story goes that wisps used to glow according to the type of stone they had as their loot so ones with an LS would have a little glow and ones with a GLS would have a bigger glow and none had burnt stones so the ones with no stones wouldn't glow at all (similar to a fire beetle who doesn't have an eye on it as loot) but players figured this out and they could increase the number of GLS they get by going after the brightly glowing ones so Verant added the burnt out stones and made them all glow the same on all wisps.

Befallen wisps are different from regular wisps by the way, the wisps in befallen have high MR and are aggressive and social while wisps everywhere else are non aggressive to anyone although they are very social (one will jump you if it is close to you attacking another one.)

The island with kerrans that wisps spawn on is sometimes called kerra isle and I guess it could be called that but it is different from Kerra Ridge which is it's own zone off Toxxula in that these kerrans pretty much tolerate anyone while the populace of kerra ridge take a strong disliking to evil races and erudites.

The burnt out lightstones actually have a use, they are one of the ingredients in making training runes used to skill up a caster's research which coincidently is done in a Concordance of Research which is the result of turning in a GLS to the gypsies.

Gypsies in South Ro and North Karana will grant you a quest with the LS and GLS, S Ro for evil characters and N Karana for good characters, although I have heard of others like the Oasis gypsies giving these quests. The quest is simple, turn a GLS in to receive a container book the "Concordance of Research" which sells to a vendor for almost 10pp with max charisma and faction. The regular lightstones can also be turned in for the istructions on using the concordance but a LS sells to a vendor for just under a plat while the resulting instructions sell for under 5gp so while you get a little experience this way you end up losing money. I can never remember which gypsie in each camp takes the stones but I do know that if you hail them then the one who does will mention that they are the keeper of the concordance. Turning in GLS and possibly LS in S Ro results in faction plus with dreadguard inner and outer and one other neriak faction while in N Karana you get just the experience, from my observations both quests give about the same experience.

In all my travels across Norrath I have never had a mob go aggressive on me due to the type or intensity of the lightsource I was carrying nor for any loot I had in my possesion, these are common myths...sort of EQ urban legends.

I found wisps to be great experience from about level 8 (pet classes only or groups at this level) up to about level 13, at level 14 some of the wisps are green and even if you have a plentiful spawn of them available the experience slows down.

Wisps require magic to hit, this includes a magic weapon to attack with, a magic shield if you want to bash, magic boots if you want to kick, anything magic in your offand (or magic gloves if you have an empty offhand) to use racial slam, magic gloves to punch with (this only seems to work with monks and bards) or magic spells.

I have heard the occasional player mention that even in the 20s and 30s hunting wisps simply to farm the GLS and do the concordance quest results in good experience and cash but these players always seem to not level very fast and be wearing very poor gear. I guess you could give the stones to a low level twink to have them turn in for experience and I imagine the concordance quest is good experience at say level 5 but just like deathfist belts and the many other ways to 'buy' experience for younger players this results in a character with poor combat skills and even a wizard benifits greatly from things like defensive skill that can only be obtained through fighting mobs taht give experience. Not to mention your typical gypsie camp is not an easy place to get to at really low levels.

I'm not sure about all of the class pets but I do know that with mage and necromancer pets the occasional pet made with the level 8 summon will hit magic and most of the ones made with the level 12 summon will hit magic, although some won't. Mages have a workaround because they are able to summon a magic weapon to give to any pet who couldn't hit magic normally and it seems that once a pet is able to hit magic then giving them a non-magic weapon does not stop them from being able to do so.

The secret to not getting destroyed at lower levels is to 'pull' the wisps away from their spawn points and paths. On 'wisp isle' in Erud's Crossing the beaches on all sides except the east shore (the one the boat goes in front of and docks at) are good places tp pull to and in other zones the idea is to get them far enough away from the normal wisp paths to not have others join in. Don't forget to account for the wisps fleeing at low health if you don't have root and/or snare.

Well, for all the characters I have hunted wisps with I have to say that is about all the knowledge I can think of on the subject.

P.S. I think all you who hunt them for GLS when they are green are going to end up as poor, low level fools

They are not normally agro on just about anything. They do *not* however like Invis vs. Undead people. I never had a wisp in Befallen agro on me, but this one time on level 3, I cast invis vs. undead to make a run for the door to get a party member without "gate" out of the level. I got in the hall... and a wisp all the way across the room agroed on us. The first hit kicked off the invis vs. Undead, and we got bum rushed by ghouls and elf skellies. (and eventually the stupid Necro Ther there) We made a run for our lives, and with me and my Devine Aura staying around taking hits while the almost frenzy-ready tank made it ahead of danger, we both made the zone alive. Best sence of teamwork I've ever been a part of in EQ.

Its because the wisp in befallen is an evil aggro mean little blue speck.

Try going there when it's green to you. You'll see it scowl.

Don't fight it until you know you can beat it up. The one in Befallen is HIGHLY REsistant.

I have a dwarven cleric (level 11).

I was on Kerra Isle (Erud Xing et al) soloing some wisps. I can handle one by myself, so between smashes with my Bloodforge Hammer (13dam rating) I check to see if any others are about.

Well, I got trapped. 2 of um on me. I took out the one, and started on the second. at almost 10%health and 10%mana I got jumped by another. I didn't know where it came from! It turns out I was on the spawn point. What a pain.

Well, I know you want the juicy part right? I cast "Devine Aura on myself to get somewhere I could get my corpse easily, and as soon as it took hold THEY LEFT!

They stop attacking if you are invulnerable! How nice eh? I con'd the wisps I had been fighting, and they were "glowering" so I was safe. How nice? I medded a bit, and went back to pick them off one by one.

Also, when leaving the Quenos Docks on the boat. there is a bug. Sometimes you spawn on the island, and not on the boat! I have plenty of time to handle a wisp and still get back on the boat for Erudin.

A note to others soloing < level 15 on this island. The madmen on the island are casters, and they hurt. I have been fighting a wisp many times to find myself hit by one of the madmen. fear um.

Light source
# Mar 14 2001 at 1:13 PM Rating: Decent
The difference between the lightstone and greater lightstone is the amount of light given off. the lightstone is like a torch or lantern, whereas the greater lightstone is about 3 times as bright, with larger radius of illumination.

Be careful about stuff like this - monsters will home in on light sources at night so unless you're tough enough that you carry a lightsource to attract them to you, this may do more harm than good.

Also, considering the fact that you can score 8-10pp and a ton of XP for one of these things, I say either carry a torch or put a firebeetle eye in one of your slots

As far as I know, there is absolutely no correlation between light sources and mob agro. I'm not sure what gave you this idea, but it was probably just a coincidence, or somebody giving you some bad advice as a joke... mobs won't agro you because you are carrying a bright light source, and the intensity of the light won't alter the chances that mobs wander in your direction. Players, on the other hand, might, provided you're playing on a PvP or race war server. =P

I believe there are willowisps, will-o-wisps, and will o wisps. Though I can't recall which was which, I also seem to remember that one of the three was typically higher level and more often than the others would drop a GLS (think it was the will o wisp, but might have been the will-o-wisp). Dunno. Been a long time since I've hunted wisps. =P

Ok, get this... I was playing in Befallen with a couple of my guild memebers... doing a corpse recovery... and we start running into these little wisps. I'm thikning no big deal.. I've killed tons of them... and they con green to me. But in befallen they cna be nasty, I don't know if it was a bug or what but those little buggers reisisted every single spell i cast on them... and i mean every one.

I have never had a problem wiht them before so I don't know if it was a bug.. or a trait unique to the wisps in Befallen. Has anyone else run into this? Just wanted to warn everyone and see if anyone has had similar experiences.

Yes the wisps in befallen seem to be 100% MR, I couldn't even snare one with my 50 bard, I had to just melee the heck out of it with every caster in the place healing/pacting it. Oh well, I killed them too just because they helped it and well they used necro pact on the wisp so they were all low health also (:

Just an FYI, but it's not dark pact that the Shadowknights and Necromancers were casting, it's Dark Empathy. If my memory serves me (though it often doesn't =P), it's ~25 health transferred from the caster to the target.

Rogues they are
# Jan 29 2001 at 5:52 PM Rating: Decent
I've been fighting a lot of this little things recently and noticed something. If you get one behind you, it does a lot more damage and is able to stun you, which they don't do from the front (no, I'm not an Ogre either) so it seems that they're backstabbing, which would make them rogues.

Also on a side note, you can't put a Concordence of Research in a container (I think I read that you could here somewhere).
RE: Rogues they aren't
# Mar 14 2001 at 4:31 PM Rating: Default
Everything does more damage when it gets behind you since you aren't able to defend yourself as well - try taking off your armor and then fighting something then try putting your armor back on and turning your back to it - you'll notice that it hits just as often and hard as if you were naked.

The burnt lightstones were implemented because people were making so much money killing wisps, or farming them for stones and using them to exp their twinks. So, in all probability, there is no place that these stones can be taken for either money or exp.

I looted a burnt out lightstone this evening, along with a ranger with the assistance of an enchanter. The three of us finished off the wisp in about a minute, rather quick I thought considering previous experience with these things. Anyway, when I saw the burnt out lightstone was no drop I decided to hold onto it and see what I could find out about it as far as quest value and what not. While stopping at a store to sell the other loot I was carrying at the time, I figured what the hey, why not, and checked it's price at the Beyond Felwithe in, of course, Felwithe. 1 measly copper was all the thing was worth. Not sure if this will help anyone else out there, just figured I would pass on the info.

Wisps rock.... I can solo about 2 at a time with my 15 bard, losing only like 2 bubbles of health. And the loot rocks... Turn in the GLS for xp and the book worth 9pp... I also heard you can tunr in the Normal LS for another book that sells for 2pp... pretty cool. Haven't tested that though. Hunt um in NK so you can turn um right in in the same zone.... and for all you evils... you can turn in GLS in South Ro.... there's an evil gypsie camp there.

The greater lightstones they drop sell for over 3 pp... not bad for a creature of this level. My lvl 11 druid carries a glowing wooden crook, so I have no problems snaring, kiting them with ignite, then just bashing them until they die.

Your getting 3pp per lightstone...you would make more money if you did some quest research bring the GLS to Myrissa in NK get the COR and sell the COR back to her for 7 to 8pp each... you can easly make 200 to 300pp depending on how many GLS you get and you have more money for spells and stuff...
