I don't know what the picture was back in 2004, but for anyone reading today, the pictured mob is in fact A Sludge Lurker (albiet a tight enough shot to omit most of the mob's body).

I dont know about the rings themself, but i just can say, that i am farming treants in Earth A, and it occassionally appears, that some mud mobs jump on me either ...
As, after one went down again on my paths, suddenly the message "The last odf the mud walkers has been slain. A loud roar is heard from the center of the middle temple as the Sludge Lurker comes into being" appeared.
well ... as i did nothing special (I cant reconstruct the mud i had slay before ...) i guess its either a amount on muds, or all of the possible "special" muds in the zone ... but to that its said, that you cant track them, as they are invisible and triggered on comin near ... So it might just be a form of mass slayin to finally get him spawn ...

He's lvl 72 and part of the Mud ring.. after death he spawns 10 lvl 55 Muck Mudlet's.

You have to kill 4 or 5 of these guys. You will know you killed the last one when no more Muck Mudlets spawn on its death. At this point 4 lvl 70 Filth Gorger's Spawn.

This mob is spawned during the "Mudd Ring", drops no loot. Just a ring mob.

Maybe someone can find that useful.
