Killed Lucan
# May 16 2004 at 5:52 AM Rating: Good
After weeks of begging for anyone to help me kill him and getting no volunteers, I decided to take my chances. Here's how it went.

1. I was level 53 at the time, paladin, and solo. I was slightly twinked and buffed up to around 4400 hps. I made sure I had KEI, Virtue, Haste, and my Divine Might spell cast for that extra proc.

2. I zoned into W. Freeport from the POK book and ran through to N. Freeport as I was already KOS and needed to pass the guards. When I zoned back in I started pulling the guards I saw one by one to the zone line of North Freeport. I found that if I pulled the guards around the corner just before the zone-in, the other guards wouldn't see me or aggro on me and I could safely focus on the guard I pulled. Most of the guards were light blue to me and very easy kills. With the KEI buffed on me, mana for heals was easy.

3. I pulled every guard I saw around the outside of the militia house. I didn't clear the 3 guards up by the gate - they were far enough away I didn't have to worry about them.

4. After clearing all the guards from the yard - I opened the door to the militia house and pulled the guard just inside. He was again light blue and went down quickly. I then pulled 2 more guards from inside the militia house.

5. Not knowing the layout of the militia house very well and being KOS - I drank an invis potion so I could sneak in and find out where Sir Lucan was. I can't tell how much of a difference it made knowing where he is. I found him in the front door, down the hall to the left, in the door to a big room, and then right behind another door. He is in the same room as Brother Jentry - this was very important to know.

6. Once I had the layout, I returned to the zone line - healed up and refreshed my pally buffs. Then I checked the yard outside again to make sure no guards had popped up. After making sure everything was clear - I headed in.

7. I went into the big room just outside where Sir Lucan is, I targeted Brother Jentry and cast Pacify on him through the wall - don't open the door. Once Brother Jentry was pacified - I opened the door and Sir Lucan immediately came at me. I retreated to the zone line of N. Freeport.

8. Once at the zone line the fight commenced. It was a long fight and questionable at times. I could not root him and he resisted most of my stuns. I cast etereal cleansing every chance I got and managed to stay alive - though I did have to use LOH toward the end of the fight. Eventually, he died. Immediately his skellie form popped and off we went again.

9. Stupid me - I forgot to cast my Instument of Nife spell (undead proc) and I didn't even have it on the spell bar. I found I could root the skellie form though and so once rooted - I backed off and memmed my Nife spell into the spell bar and cast it soon as it popped. A couple of heals later and the undead proc - taking down the skellie form of Sir Lucan was easy. I probably could have taken him down without the Nife spell if I had more hitpoints when the fight started.

10. Once the skellie hit the ground I looted his testimony, and some words. And off I went to get my Soulfire.

Actually, I very much doubt you did this. Lucan turns to run when he gets at low health, so either you didn't come back to find him dead as you claim, or else you used some questionable tools to auto-follow him while AFK.

Ok, here is the lowdown.

65 Sk, with a windblade and about 4.5khps unbuffed.

Took him out solo, went into the guard house and killed the guards where they stood. Started to make my way to Lucan.

The highest he hit me for was 109 max. I was fighting brother jenthey first, after a few cheals he died. By the time I got to Lucan, he was at 74% from riposte damage alone.

Few swings latter, dead. Then a skeleton poped, easier than the human form. Also dead. me at 50% health and 60% mana.

Sir Lucan is not on a regular timer as far as I can tell. Killed him once and then he didnt respawn like all his cronies. An interesting sidenote is the cleric spawned almost immediately after his death five minutes at most. Was killed by 65 sk btw.

I just soloed Lucan for the first time yesterday, and boy did it feel good! :) Here's how I did it.

Background: I'm a 55 Paladin with really nice gear for the level. I got a KEI and a Virtue in PoK before coming down to Freeport; everything else was self-buffs and solo.

I grabbed an invis potion off the merchant in PoK and took the book down to Freeport. Drank the potion, ran past the gate guards, and scouted out the area. I decided the easiest thing would be to pull Lucan to the NFP zone -- least guards in the way means less chance of an inopportune respawn. I believe, but I'm not sure, that guards have a respawn time of 30 minutes, so you have to act fast.

I also noticed that the see-invis guard who used to be right outside the door to the Militia house has been moved to just inside the door. He'll only aggro if he gets line-of-sight to you, so you can safely run past the door (on the outside, of course) without aggroing him if you're invis.

There's one static guard right near the NFP zone, and one wanderer who comes right to that area. Pull and kill them first. There's another wanderer who moves from the door of the militia house to just behind there; pull him next. Finally grab the door guard and pull him to the NFP zone.

From here on out, things get annoying, as you have to pull the guards a goodly distance to the NFP zone. If you stay too close to the militia house, Jentry will toss a CH to the guards you're fighting. This suggested a nice strategy to me -- find a light-blue guard and fight him *in Jentry's CH range* just outside the militia house. Jentry won't aggro, but he will repeatedly heal the guard. Since the guard is light blue, he won't be doing all that much damage to you; you can use Ethereal Cleansing or root-and-heal to keep yourself fine. Let Jentry keep CH'ing your worthless blue guard until he's out of mana, then kill the guard.

Now, open the door of the militia house and pull the guard just inside. Again, take him to the NFP zone and "retire" him. Head back into the militia house and decide if you're feeling lucky. There's a wandering guard named Ogo inside the militia house; if he's close by, he'll add on this pull or the next. If you can see him, pull him now and kill him, but be warned, he's a pain. Straight down the hall from the outer door is another guard, right outside Lucan's room. Pull him and kill him.

Here it got interesting. It turns out you can target Lucan and Jentry though the wall, even if the door is closed. Type "/target Brother" to get a lock on Jentry, and cast Pacify on him. Then open the door, get a target on Lucan, and run back out to your staging ground near the NFP zone. (Lucan will aggro when he sees you through the door.) Get as close to the actual zone line as you can. Lucan resists like mad; don't waste too much mana stunning him. Toss the odd Flash of Light or something at him, but save the bulk of your mana for healing yourself; you'll need it.

Remember when I suggested you run Jentry out of mana? Here's why. Once Lucan begins his "death march", he'll walk right back into the building and towards Jentry! If Jentry has mana for a CH, he'll cast it on Lucan while he's outside the Militia house. Lucan is resistant enough that I never got Instill to stick on him for more than two seconds at a time. When I did finally kill him, it was right outside his room! :)

The skeleton that pops is a piece of cake compared to the live Lucan. He hits for much less and much slower, and he's undead, which means your Instrument of Nife (you *did* cast that before starting, right?) is going to be proccing on him. He'll go down fast.

Now, if you feel like it, you can march into Jentry's room and take him down. A mana-less cleric is really rather pitiful when faced with a hopping-mad paladin in full swing. =)

Gratz, you just killed Sir Lucan solo. Go hoist a beer in his memory at your favorite bar.

I solo Lucan regularly. I have found the best place to pull him to is exactly to where this guard is just inside the building. It is out of range of Jentry's heals, and assuming you have killed all the wanderers and mobs between this spot and Lucan you get no adds. This spot is close enough to other NPCs to fool this disgraced ex Paladin into not running.

Other than that, great guide!
Sir Lucan is SO easy.

I (a level 50 druid) can and have soloed this guy using full mana, KEI, and simple kiting techniques. His remains conned yel to my friends 39 pally so they were easy to take down. The tricky part is getting him out. All you need are two people. One to hail him, and one to lure him out. Have the person luring him out invis and SOWed and run into the FP militia house, give Lucan a quick smack and run your sorry *** to the zoneline, but don't zone yet. You want to drag him around for a bit so you know which one he is and then you get him as close to the either corner as possible and then zone out. Have the hailer go up and repeatedly hail him to keep him in place (snaring before you zone helps this), he will probably still wander around but thats because he's aggroing on the mobs in the area, once they are all dead he will stay in place and focus on you. Then you have the lurer zone back in and begin to kite him around, this will be easy due to lack of guards. Just a simple Drifting Death (I don't have winged death yet but that makes it SOOO much easier.) Drones of Doom, Immolate, and Creeping Crud his *** around til his living form dies. His remains are extremely easy if you have an anti undead person, just snare, nuke, DoT, and run around in circles til he's dead and voila, you have one dead Lucan. Much easier than I thought. Beware though because you'll be KoS in Freeport forever more. (Just the crappy west side though, nobody likes the west side.)

You'll also be KoS in East Freeport, and it's a major, major hit to your Freeport Rogue faction, the Coalition of Tradesfolk Illegal (which affects both East and West Freeport again). So be aware of that.

Since you mention being KOS to WFP&EFP forever, does that include the EFP sewers. I am a Dark elf Shadowknight, and I occasionally hang around there. Also, will it boost people who are KOS in NFP to a point where they wont want to put my head on a pike and spit on it?

Yes, I'm afraid it does. It makes getting through the East Freeport sewers to the harbor a pain, since you'll become KOS to the rogue trainers down there. Invisibility or an invis potion will see you through safely, but it's still irritating.

As to North Freeport ... I don't have any personal experience, but a gnome shadowknight friend who helped me kill Lucan once said that the one Lucan kill was enough to take him from KOS with North Freeport to being able to bank. It took me about four or five Lucan kills to max out my North Freeport factions. My East and West Freeport factions became max KOS on my second kill.

Side note: This doesn't include the normal merchants in Freeport; they're on the Coalition of Tradesfolk faction, which is unaffected by Lucan kills. The rogues, though, are Coalition of Tradesfolk Underground, and they will stop liking you really quick if you kill Lucan.

Honestly this guy is a bugger... After researching I have come to the conclusion that the guy himself isnt the problem you are gonna need to face... Its all the mobs around him that you should draw concern. My advice get a chanter. Its doable with any class that has mezzing or pacifing spells but better safe than sorry corpse retrival in this city while you are KoS is like a <insert profanity of your choice here>

Supposedly he drops those boots of brawn listed up top, but personally I've never seen nor heard of anyone getting them from him.

Commenting though on your solo strategy at higher levels, I used a similar one myself a few months ago at 60 and again more recently at 63 to kill him very effectively as a SK. Simply waste all the weak guards at the militia house - Effel, Kroon, Drazden, Jentry, etc - then pull him single to the zone for a fairly quick kill. Posed relatively no problem for a melee fight.

Yesterday, Justice caught up with Sir Lucan D'Lere. Again. =)

I, Kyros Krane, a Paladin of Erollisi Marr, initiated a crusade to rid the land of the foul beast known as Sir Lucan. He had violated his oath to the Temple of Marr, and it was time to end his villainy.

The following team of headhunters was assembled, gathered from all corners of Norrath, Luclin, and the Plane of Knowledge:

Kyroskrane, human Paladin of 40 seasons
Magratt, wood elf Druid of 46 seasons
Gilaran, half elf Bard of 42 seasons
Oriol, gnome Shadowknight of 38 seasons
Famins, erudite Wizard of 40 seasons

We also had the assistance of Animalor, a barbarian Beastlord of 65 seasons.

Our plan was simple. We would lure Lucan out of his safe and secure hidey-hole in the Militia headquarters, isolate him from his aides, then end his sorry life.

We gathered outside West Freeport, between Ping Fizzlecutter's tent and the wall at the edge of Freeport. Our brave Shadowknight chose to hide invisibly, rather than await us in the nearby East Commonlands, and the rest of us prepared as best we could. Enhancement magic of all sorts was cast upon us, increasing our strength, speed, and toughness, making us better able to withstand that attacks of the vile Lucan.

Then, after we had prepared ourselves and completed our prayers to our respective deities for aid and success, the battle began. I entered the city of Freeport alone, bearding the lion in his den. Into Lucan's very chamber I strode, and boldly unleashed my spells against him. Naturally, he and his friend, the so-called Brother Jentry, took offence at my presumption, as did every single guard in the city of Freeport between the Militia house and the gates! Imbued by the Spirit of Wolf, I easily outran all the guards, and led them a merry chase into the yard outside the city proper where my friends awaited.

I was quickly able to evade Lucan and his dastardly guards by running into the Commonlands, and they were unable to catch up to me. However, the guards apparently had magical enhancement cast upon them too, as they were able to see through brave Oriol's invisibility. Seeing as Shadowknights are not welcome in the public portions of Freeport, they promptly assaulted poor Oriol, and we were unable to save him.

My friends distracted Lucan by repeatedly hailing him, and as the other guards returned to their posts, Lucan found himself isolated. I returned from the Commonlands and challenged Lucan, accusing him of his crime. Unable to face up to the truth, he chose instead to sacrifice his life in a vain attempt to escape.

The battle was furious and frenetic, with many blows landed upon all sides. I bore the brunt of the attack, constantly healed by the lovely lady Druid, Magratt. Gilaran played his magical music, enhancing our ability to fight. Famins blasted Lucan with his powerful offensive magic in a well-executed attempt to reduce him to a cinder. As Lucan weakened, Animalor joined in to ensure a swift end to this traitor's life.

Finally, Lucan fell! But the battle was not over -- not by a long shot. As his mortal shell collapsed, Lucan revealed his true form. A ghostly skeleton arose to challenge us anew, and once more the battle was engaged. I pulled out my trusty Ghoulbane, the scourge of all undead, and commenced slashing at this apparition as I blasted it with my anti-undead spells. My comrades again mounted the assault, and the undead fiend died far more quickly than his mortal shell had.

Death to Lucan! Let his fall be a warning to all who would betray their oaths.

(OOC)

OK, so much for the story portion.

WARNING!! Despite everything I'd read previously, you do take faction hits BOTH for killing the live Lucan AND the undead Lucan. We goofed on this, and everyone in our group ended up KOS by mistake. To clarify, we got faction messages both when the live Lucan bit the dust AND when the undead Lucan died.

As you've probably guessed by now, we were a bit overpowered going in. Animalor's participation was a great aid, both for the buffs he cast upon us going in, and for his combat abilities and warder as we assaulted Lucan. He only joined in the combat when Lucan hit 40% or less each time, so as not to KS us. However, even without Animalor's combat aid, we had the battle easily wrapped up.

The pull was the part I had been dreading, but it went off without a hitch. First, we /ooc'ed to the zone that we were raiding Lucan and warned everyone not to join in unless they wanted to be KOS in Freeport. Then I ran into the guardhouse (I was still dubious to the Militia, not KOS) and hit Lucan with a stun. Naturally, Jentry and all the guards in the area aggroed as I ran out to the rest of the group, and the rest of the team perma-hailed Lucan to keep him from returning to the guardhouse. It was annoying, as Lucan acted like a normal guard and kept running around to kill the wandering beasties.

Oriol fell when the guards saw through his invis, and we ended up taking both Lucans down without him. However, we did rez him for the victory screenshots. =)

The battle itself was short and sharp. I was main tank; Magratt snared, dotted, then healed; Famins nuked at the right point; and Gilaran played an appropriate combat song and whacked Lucan from behind. When the undead Lucan spawned, we jumped him again.

I had Instrument of Nife up when taking down the undead Lucan, but neither it nor Ghoulbane proc'ed, so I don't know if they work against him. I was never able to get off an Expulse Undead, either, being too busy smacking him.

Finally, to clarify, Lucan does NOT drop the Brilliant Sword of Faith. Rather, the undead form drops his Testimony of Truth, which you turn in to Valeron Dushire in North Freeport. He will give you the Sword. Also, I did not see any Boots of Brawn on him, but his live form did drop a Damaged Militia Helm. The undead form also dropped a couple of bone chips with the Testimony.

My faction hits were as follows:

Live Lucan:
Your faction standing with The Freeport Militia got worse.
Your faction standing with Coalition of Tradefolk Underground got worse.
Your faction standing with Knights of Truth got better.
Your faction standing with Priests of Marr got better.

Undead Lucan:
Your faction standing with The Freeport Militia could not possibly get any worse.
Your faction standing with Coalition of Tradefolk Underground got worse.
Your faction standing with Knights of Truth got better.
Your faction standing with Priests of Marr got better.

I'm now pretty much permanently KOS to the Freeport Militia, and Ally (though surprisingly, not max allied) with the Knights of Truth.

Well, there you have it. Lucan (once again) met his well-deserved fate at the hands of a Paladin. It was so much fun that I think I may make a weekly mini-raid out of killing Lucan. =)

This is how I done it: what I did was have a grp of 5 consisting of: 53druid Valderalg (puller) tuamac (tank) 40th paladin (me) Clatto (nuker) and another guy (?spelling) what we done was: Tuamac killed the surrounding guards by the miltia house. Then druid ran in the militia house and pulled to north freeport west freeport where he was around the corner from sight of other guards. He went down along with his skellie reanimation in like 4 min. tops we lost maybe 2 yellows of health among all of us. You as the paladin not KOS can hail him if any guards come to assist while puller zones to North Freeport. once he's hailed around the corner youre free to kill him

I found away to use the surounding terain to your advantage to kill lucan. i am a 51 magician and i soloed him NP, however, i didn't agro the skelly fastenough and he depoped about 20sec after he spawned. ok this is how i did it. got my pet out cleared all the guards in the surounding area around the militia house and the two spawns in the hall. ran in, agroed, ran out. jentry will try and nuke you, lucan runs after you so they split at that moment. lev yourself, run to the open field where theres a little pond and a merchant that sells tailoring suplies DO THIS FAST AS YOU CAN or jentry will catch up. if you go to the wall, and walk up the little mound of dirt you can lev over to the crumbled wall. run acroosed it to the adjacent wall, go right, run down take another right and stand on the wall facing the guard shack next to the nfp zone. nothing can get to you up here, everything you agro will stop dead in there tracks. look around for lucan and nuke away, he ussually gets stuck in the spot right before you get up on the wall. save some mana before you kill him though, if you don't agro the skelly he will depop kinda fast. then run down claim your loot, or in my case, my leve 15 pally just walked up and looted. thats how you solo lucan with a mage. i thought it was kinda funny myself.

Okay what I do is a ton of freeport militia quests, like the evil DF belts one, I'm a paladin, and was scared I would be KoS in my own guild. So I killed Deathfist orcs they raise your faction w/ freeport miltia, knights of truth, and others. I also complete lots of anti-militia quests or kill militia guards, and do such as to kill deathfist orcs, since they raise freeport faction and a few others. You can even hunt those level 5-6 pawns and it raises!

53 Illusionist here. We killed Lucan yesterday real easy with some guildies. I am apprehensive to FP guards (amiable with Human+Collaboration).

After giving AQ to all tanks, I medded up. With Fascination, mezzed the guards at militia entrance, then individually dazzled them. Went in, mezzed guard in hall, mezzed guard in the first room, opened door to Lucan's room, and mezzed Jentry. This aggroed Lucan, and he came running. With SoW, I easily ran out, passed through courtyard, and through gates, and ran to where the rest of us were. Lucan followed alone, without aggroing the guards at main gate, and beat for a second or two on my Rune before tanks got his aggro. Then I zoned to get clear. Easy kill, I even did not get a faction hit.

We killed him awfully easily w/ a mid 50's shaman who slowed, a 52 monk who pulled him, me, 49 war and 49 ranger.

That's not too interesting, granted.

However, we pulled him to the PoK teleporter book in the newbie tunnel. Using the traditional hailing, the 3-4 other guards eventually wandered off, leaving him to us. Having the book right there made it easy for all but me to gate prior to him going down. I finished him off and soloed the skelly, which I didn't expect to hit as hard as he did.

Also, Jentry did not follow on the pull.

I'd recommend this approach as by the time Sir Lucan starts walking back to gates, he doesn't even get close before biting the dust.

When we took him down, we were all warned that if we didn't want to be KOS to the Freeport Milita, we needed to gate or zone before he died. Apparently killing him (or helping kill him)
makes you KoS to the Freeport Militia, but the Guards in North Freeport will look upon you warmly. Now, I don't know what good it does to be warmly in North freeport if you have to go through KoS West (and East) Freeport first, but in any case, I gated out when he was down to half a bubble of health just to be safe.
