Hobgoblin Anguish Lord

Raid Encounter
Screenshot

Uploaded July 24th, 2007

This mob's spawn is triggered by the death of The Fearsome Hobgoblin.

Two 65th level guards (in mephit and bat form) spawn alongside him. The three of them are rooted in place and summon. The Hobgoblin Anguish Lord hits for a max ~1,100 and is a formidable opponent -- bring some friends.

Was able to kill entire cycle including Anguish Lord on TLP in GoD with Bard + Druid. Bard was geared out in Qvic+ gear in all slots, druid was significantly less geared.

Max hit (with Mitigation of the Mighty) was over 1500. I was able to tank just the Anguish Lord while out of range of the bat and mephit adds; all 3 are permarooted. He frequently cast an AE that was interrupting Druid CHeal (Karana renewal or whatever) so she was casting faster heals. He did not have a significant HP pool, fight lasted about 4 minutes with just Bard melee DPS and Damage Shields.

The bat conned yellow (didn't check his level)
Mephit was level 65
Anguish Lord was level 70

I was in Nightmares, Using my 76 Necro to Look for a way out of the River ravine for my ranger. The Ranger Fishes there for waterleaf scale, but cant find the way back out so he can zone out. Yes he can use his breastplate to gate him to Lfay, .. but it would be convenient if he didnt have to do that all the time (So if anyone knows .. let me know... ingame map is almost completely useless) BUT........... I was roaming around the tunnels for fun and came across The Bat that starts this whole thing off... and read posts, that led me to killing this guy. Wasn't real tough for 76 necro with merc... but no pet. He conned DB to me though, so he must be at least 71.

There's an alternate zoneout over by the hedge. And there are a number of places he can fish safely for hours along that bank in between mobs. Also there is a dock down south of the hobbie cave near the spiders - I believe he can fish safely off the dock as well.

He is in the hobgob caves, but deeper in isn't enough info. How about, go straight into the hobgob caves.
1. go straight through interesection, kill THE bullyrag bat, if up. If not, clear till he pops.
2. Find Painwrack Hobgoblin, who spawns on death of THE bullyrag (not A bullyrag). If you take first left after cave entrance, he will be in the right room of the three, near the back in center.
3. Find the Fearsome Hobgoblin, who spawns on death of the Painwrack Hobgoblin. If you take the first left after cave entrance, he is straight past the next intersection, in the middle room of the 3. He is nearly in middle of the room, but a bit farther back.
4. Finally go kill the Hobgoblin Anguish lord, who spawns on death of the Fearsome Hobgoblin. If you take the first left from cave entrance, take the next left also. He is in the left room of the cluster of 3. He is along the wall in the very back, a bit to the right of center straight back. Make sure you get between him and the wall though, because his pushback will push you into the wall, up it and around the wall if you are not directly squared up with him. He and the bat and mephit with him are all permarooted. Kill him down a bit so he summons you after he throws you. Then whack the mephit. Then move back to him to finish. We cleared the mobs to the left and right of him along wall.

I just soloed him.....lvl 75 SK with 625 AAs, 2.0 12.5k hp 3k AC unbuffed for fight. 10k+ mana. I killed the annoying mefrit first, then pounded the hell out of the Anguish Lord...fight took 3 mins or so. Dropped Greatsword and boots. Easy fight for me, was bored so figured I would give it a try.

Wanted to know if anyone has an answer to that question, how much peeps can take this guy down? and is this mob located inside the tunnel you take to get to VtS?

Need a strategy?
# Jul 11 2003 at 6:58 AM Rating: Excellent
Here is the strategy how we did it:

First, you don't have to fight all 3 of them at once. You can kill them one by one, just bring some time and patience and you will be fine.

The one you have to kill first is that blue one, the Mephit. Its 1500 dmg AE is very annoying and will kill your whole raid faster than you are willing to believe.
So, take all your people to the left side of the cave and pull clean right in front of your raid, so you don't get any adds. Remember the ones behind the big rocks close to the Lord.
When you cleaned the place, make everyone ready to rush the Mephit and ONLY the Mephit. Fight at maximum melee range, stay out of the melee range of the Lord and the Bat. Everyone who can nuke, nuke the ******* for all mana you`ve got. The Mephit HAS to die very fast or you will end up with a lot of dead people. Don't bother healing too much, rather nuke, it doesn't have so much HP.

Now, pull the corpses, rez, rebuff and walk over to the other side of the cave, you will use the same strategy for the Bat. When you got to the other side of the cave, pull the area clean, get ready to rush the bat, using the same tactic. Nuke the hell out of the Bat, use offensive disciplines if they are up, just kill it fast. The Bat has about the same amount of HP as the Mephit so it will go down pretty fast.

After that, pull corpses, rez, rebuff, get ready for Lord.
First, check for possible respawns. Respawn in this cave is pretty fast, so make sure your people don't go afk too often or are distracted by TV or other things.
To fight the Lord, get behind him, your back against the Wall. Use fast heals instead of CH-chain cause the Knockback will rip your CH-chain anyway. Let all the healers (clerics, druids and shaman when they are done debuffing) heal your Main Tank with the fastest heals they have. Some can even use CH, let them decide who will cast what.
Rampage Tank will help a lot, cause sometimes the Lord Rampages, but not too often.

Oh, forgot to say that Levi will help a lot for all three fights cause you won't get so much damage when you take a flight through the cave. ;)

Tried this mob today with one group consisting of VT/Ssra geared people. Group was Pal with like 300 AAs and the rest with like 100-200 Wiz Enc Cle BL Rog. Took two tries tho. We had this strategy as base. Pet agroed on the Lord cause of the knockback and dmgd him enough for him to start summoning which resulted in cleric and chanter dying.

Had pally rez and then started over, this time levitating too. Also learned that the mephit is mezzable with sleep. So we just skipped him, kept him mezzed. Got the bat down pretty fast and easy. Then we got a pet and prepared for the lord himself. Lol we got 2 adds and stuff kept em mezzed tho, for some reason the tank didnt die, he was around 20% hp all the time tho, but Divine Intervation didnt go off. He went down pretty fast tho, guess the hasted pet did alot of the work.

After we were done with adds and everything and fm we killed the mephit just for fun and god did he have no hp at all lol.

So all in all this was a pretty good strat and is doable with one group of VT+ geared people (at least the tank, ours has 8250 raidbuffed, didnt have as much now since we didnt have a shammy). Tho if we are to try again it might be hard to win, was a close fight.

Thanks Drozzee for the infoz =)

About this guy
# Mar 03 2003 at 4:36 PM Rating: Good
Using a precise strategy, my guild kills him regularly with 18 or less (average level 62ish, no VT loot) and the entire sequence is a 3 hour effort. He also drops Clamitous Hilted Fang and Blackened Greatsword. The Greatsword and Sullied Mithril Blade seem to be rarer. He seems to have around 80k HP, is immune to slow, a level 70 Shadowknight, and has a powerful knockback AE with a small DD component (Unresistable) that he uses every 30 seconds (effectively making the use of Complete Heal impossible), though his resists are fairly low. He does not Rampage or Flurry, but does hit for 1200x2, leads off with a nice 1500ish harmtouch, and loves to eat healers.

"Using a precise strategy, my guild kills him regularly with 18 or less"

Care to share?

We went after him with about 20 people, and the fight lasted about 45 seconds or so, but we were not ready for his roughly 100 to 200ft AOE Knockback every 10-15 seconds or so. He didnt seem to hit all that hard, but all 3 mobs will make you come to them, they seem perma-rooted. None of them can be slowed or mezzed. I think if you brought 24+ 63+ or more, you could do him if you planned right. You will need to deal with 3 mobs at one time. The higest Chanter we had was 62, so a higher level mez might work.

If we go after him again, ill let you know what happens.

First off: I agree with Willowhaven completely.
Second:There may be a rare drop that is uber and just not reported (or even discovered) yet. If not now, there could be after next patch. You never know.
Uber loot or not, this whole encounter looks like A LOT of FUN and very challenging.

Most of the boss type mobs in PoP are low hps and high DPS. Just need to kill him asap. The giant crocodile hits for like 1100, but he died in about 20 seconds =P~

Willowhaven could not have said it better. Im getting tired of reading endless posts and flames about how its not worth the time to kill anything for the loot. What would you do if sony got rid of loot? Or revamped it to no longer fit your class? You are missing the point of this mob and most others that are difficult to spawn and or kill. Its the difficulty, the challenge and the ability to say yup.....we did that! The planes are meant for a challenge not a horde zone. ToV is a great zone but its a loot horde zone. Thats what it was designed for.
Why bother??

The loot this guy drops is crap for the amount of work it would take to kill him. I would imagine it would take a few groups to take down a mob that quads for 1100s so I would expect the loot to be very nice.

ToV drops are better than either of the loots listed here, and there are many other encounters in PoP that drop nicer loot that are not near the pain this would be.

Everyone plays the game differently. You are a hoarder; your time and stragegy is spent on the collection of things. Hurray for you. Some of us are in it for the experiece of the event... as well as some others (and I see several others have commented to that end). If you're of the level to be taking on mobs such as this; you have enough high level friends to make the death penalty almost non-existant and corpse retrieval no more than a minor annoyance, so why not stick your neck out just to say "We did it!" with whoever's with you at the moment?

I'd rather die ten times today and have a good time than spend an afternoon rubbing my hands over an item listing and hoping I win the roll.
RE: Why bother??
# Feb 04 2003 at 10:53 PM Rating: Excellent
Why bother? Why NOT? Kill him because he's there. Kill him because you can. Kill him because you MIGHT be able to. Kill him because you haven't fought him before and want a new challenge. Kill him so you can say you did. Kill him so you can have the experience.

Loot is nice, but the game seems to lose so much when every mob is subjected to Cost-Benefit Analysis to decide if it's "worth fighting." Cost Benefit is for jobs and investments. Games are just supposed to be fun.

You know I belive the same as you. I try to schedule serveral raids for just that purpose. Not loot, but just to say we did. And the sad thing is.... NO ONE SHOWS... so it ends up a failure or caned outright. The wonderfull thing about an encounter like this. Just go for it. If you die.. no big deal. Wait a few min and rez in GY. So the risk vs reward is in fact slanted twords reward. I mean what do you have to loose? Nothing but a little time.
