The Bully and the Thief

This is the story of two old enemies, the selyrah and the oashim. These two creatures disliked each other for all of their lives. The selyrah would take things from the oashim if it liked them. The oashim would sneak into the selyrah's home when the selyrah was not there and take those things back. The oashim would also take other things that it liked that were in the selyrah's home.

One day the selyrah caught the oashim in its home with bundles of its stuff tucked into its mouth pouch. The selyrah was so angry to find the oashim in its home stealing its favorite things, that it gritted its teeth and clawed the floor with its sharp claws. "I'm going to eat you, little oashim!" It growled.

The oashim, cheeks filled with shiny things, muttered, "mrrplf frrlgprt frgmnak!" It spit out the shiny things and said again, more clearly, "I just want my things back!"

"I'll just eat you then, and you won't have to worry about your things."

The oashim grew angry at this. "If you eat me, who will you take things from? You can't just eat me and keep taking my stuff."

The selyrah crouched, ready to pounce. "I can eat you and take all of your things. You aren't very smart!"

"If you eat me, then I can't get more things. And then you can't take them. Listen to me. I think I have a plan. We can both get things we want, if we just work together."

"I don't trust you. You cheat and steal from everyone. Nobody likes you. Nobody trusts you." The selyrah was still angry, but it stood up from its crouch and its claws no longer dug into the floor.

"That is just because they do not understand me. I don't take things from anyone but you, and only because you threaten me and take my things first. Everyone thinks that you are mean, and nobody likes you either. I think I can help us both."

The selyrah looked at the oashim with cold eyes. "I don't like that people don't like me. I try to be nice, but they always make me angry."

"If I tell them that you are nice to me, they will believe me. They know that we don't like each other. So if I tell them that you are my friend, They will think it's true. And if you tell them that you trust me, that I never steal from you, they will believe that too. If we work together, we can get them to like us both."

"But, you DO steal from me!" The selyrah shouted.

"I won't any more. And you won't be force me to give you my things. So we will both be telling the truth. After all, what do we really want, these things," it poked at the pile of shiny, slightly moist items at its feet, "or friends?"

"You might be right. Let's try it. But if you are cheating me, I will eat you."

From that day the selyrah and the oashim pretended to be friends. They stopped stealing from each other. The other creatures of the valleys and forests learned to trust them both. This made both of them very happy.

What they did not expect was that after so long pretending to be friends, they actually became friends. Many years later they realized this, and both were happy that it was true.
