#REDACTED, Posted: Oct 28 2002 at 7:39 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Casters meleeing is fine, but maybe if verant is doing this, they will add in new armor for melees with wizard spells! I also like how they commonly add massive amounts of AC to caster items.
poc changed now

thoughts of someone who has this weapon

ok last time i melee was level 23 ... i didnt melee after that 1hb at 37 and offense at 107. i got this sceptor on raid when iam on trial coz no one else wanted it. iam level 60 now and i tried this staff with 200dex and haste and i have 36% haste in my robe. the end result was i did about 1k damage on average with this staff the proc is a 450 dd which procs like 2-3 times in a fight and often crit for 550-750 dmg .... and i cast a nuke during fight dong another 1615 hit over 2k if it crit which is rare. i always have some sort of crack nothing less than c2 and i can regen the mana i lose from nuke between pulls. this staff is totally uber coz of its stats and damage dealing potential. i also do bout 200 melee damage and iam sure if my skill max out i can do much more damge coz more hits mean more procs. this is a highly underrated sceptor IMO.
#REDACTED, Posted: May 02 2002 at 1:58 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This proc has a range of 200ft, standard for nearly all DD spells. Well you don't have to be in melee range to proc, you simply have to turn auto-attack on. Say you don't have chanter in the group so mana regen is painfully slow, but maybe you have a shammy to buff the hell out of your dex... so turn auto-attack on from a safe distance and let the proc'ing begin.
#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 16 2002 at 4:09 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) thats why its cool to have a horse cause you can melle while you sit and regen as long as you dont move : p
melee

If it was at least clickable... /sigh

There's like 3 times I actually melee:

1st: to kill the orc pawn that agroed on me when I was sitting at the spire

2nd: I am really really bored and decide to melee the <blue> mob in front of me (after I nuked it to near death) and watch his regen being faster than my melee dmg...

3rd: A ReaverRun. Nothing is for a wizard as boring as this raid! I mean, lures not even hit 50% of the time, and the dmg/mana ratio is pitiful.

well that orc pawn can still be very dangerous when you are 56, so you know what ya gotta do eh. Get this wand and go whack some orc pawns, if you can make it proc, sweet. If not be very very careful

But seriously look at the stats and ignore the ratio and proc. Maybe if you are lucky and in zone gaining exp and loot someone will yell, "wizard come to Thought overfeind". Sure its not gonna happen but hey, I know I would love it, go wack some of those spiders in crystal caverns for silk
get something else
# Feb 10 2002 at 5:16 PM Rating: Default
This weapon is decent. The int is good. The resists are awesome. The proc sucks. Everyone knows wizards aren't melee. The mana and hp is good. The damage and delay are outstanding. But, the fact is, over half the stuff on this item are useless. In my opinion, use something else with better mana and int.

Not true, wizards are great melees. You know that coldain prayer shawl? Well with this you can go whack a bunch of kitties and spiders. This is a sweet item.

Although I pl'd my alts on spiders and cats so I don't really need to farm anything

Man, did you see that proc...Decrease Hit Points (HP) from 229 (L1) to 450 (L57)...wow! I know, not many Wizards will be getting into melee, but I can promise you, at least one will just to see it proc once.

Well, since no one else has posted it already, I might as well... BTW it appears to be a single target spells, unlike most "storm" spells, which are AoE.

See what happends when Wizards whine too much about Melee damage? They make Wizards Melee to see what its like!
Riposte
# Feb 07 2002 at 12:44 AM Rating: Decent
Just to let ya'll know. At the level this item can be gotten, a wizard CANNOT use it to melee against mobs. Mobs at this level riposte for as much as 200+ at the low level of ac that wizards are allowed. And that can kill a wizard before he notices it. And even if the wizzy ain't killed the healers are gonna get all upset about waste'n mana to heal the wizzy.

Basically, if this is not a clickable proc, it is only good for farming stuff.

heh you dont know wizard gear do you :)
check the wizard main website heh i counted enough ac on some of the items to equal or surpass some melee classes a 60 ac robe and something else 60ac was half asleep when i saw it heh with all those + buffs im pretty sure a well buffed wizard can melee from side or something and beat down if neccesary
RE: Riposte
# Feb 07 2002 at 10:39 AM Rating: Decent
Actually, on long fights the wizards can melee from the *side* (no riposte there) Melee for kicks, shoot off a nuke here or there, until the Raid leader calls for all out nuking and manadumping.
Please never melee

No, there is no reason for me to EVER EVER EVER melee. The only thing I want to melee are those damn skele's that still attack me while I med. Think about it this way... If I'm melee'ing something that gives me exp. I'm doing between 0-43 damage + proc. If I'm medding, in that same amount of time I can med enough mana to cast a nuke that does 1200 damage. 1200! The reason casters stink in melee isn't their weapon's stats, it's their offense/1hb skill. The moral of the story? If you're a caster and not xenothos, don't melee.

Try sitting down though....
# Feb 07 2002 at 11:59 AM Rating: Default
I'd love to see you meditate on a Trak raid, chances are you'd be his first tasty snack just because you were sitting down. I know when I'm Full Mana and waiting on a big mob before I nuke I usually toss in a couple rounds just for that extra little damage while I wait. I really like the new weapons for pure casters to melee with, give me something to to when I'm bored on a raid gone trivial =)
Melee Range
# Feb 06 2002 at 11:03 PM Rating: Decent
Well, remember this...

Casters have to be within Melee Range to cast spells on high-end mobs anyway... and a weapon doesn't have to "hit" for it's proc to effect the mob. (I once had an SSoY proc on a mob who'd parried my swing.)

So why not hit that attack button, since you're in melee range anyway.

Because you increase your hate attacking. Even if you always miss.

Not sure, but Verant is starting to implement the idea of more efficient raiding...
Obviously, a group of 10 people will require less organization and mobilization, but will lack the pure firepower of a group of 20 people... Notice the damage/delay of caster weapons... and especially the wizard nuke that takes the rest of your mana...

Now I have never played a casting nuke class, but I am wondering if meleeing with these weapons would be better than medding for another nuke...
Also, do casters get summoned, and when they do, is casting easier, or would meleeing with these weapons be a better option.

Please reply with any information you might have. I'm sure the youger players would like to know if they should keep up their meleeing skills, even when it becomes very difficult.

this wepon here clearly designed for a wiz would be no problem to use in actual combat. at 39 the wizard has a spell quest that he(she) can attempt its called brain bite (concussion). the spell will instantly lower the wizard on the aggro list closer to the bottom, costs 25mp, and has an instant recast time. after a big nuke where the wizard might be on aggro list, a dose of concussion will keep the wizard safer, and while in melee range can bust off a cap with this piece point blank range.

you dont necessarily have to keep melee skills up especially in mid lvl range cause you should be medding more than meleeing. in a raid situation there will most likely be enchanters and necros around to handle the mana regeneration, plus a main tank (or 2 or more) to handle most of the aggro.
Whats with the melee caster items?
# Feb 06 2002 at 6:48 PM Rating: Decent
Does verant really want mages and wizards ect going in for some melee or what?? There seem to be a lot of these type of weapons.

The ratio on this is so that when they are sitting in EC and selling the tank loots they stole from us, they can kill those pesky skellies that are always hitting them.

Casters usually have low str. anywhere from 80-100str i usually see. Im not sure if caster classes and melee classes are on a different dmg chart or anything (like monks are) but any caster will never melee verywell. These weapons are pretty much for the fact that the caster can get in and get a few quick hits off to cause a proc (if its a proc spell) or just to liven up the caster life =) No caster in their right minds would try to melee, when they have enough goin on with their real jobs to keep them busy. And as far as the dmg/dly ratio goes. To keep the 'loot vs chalange' going, to put a 9/30 on this would be disappointing. 25/27 just ups the 'want' factor.

Ok wait a minute...
Storm of Lightning is an AoE - unless this was changed for this staff (which I can't imagine)
Someone is saying at higher levels caster has to stand in melee range (which is not really true unless it's some boss mob I guess).
Now consider this scenario:
You got a boss mob, so you need to be in Melee range for spells to be effective, you got attack on. This staff procs Storm of Lightning.
Not only will it hit the boss mob (who will probably resist it anyway) but it also hits all the stuff the enchie mezzed... breaking mez. And on top of that... you're in range of that mob when the AoE goes off- meaning it hits the meleeing wizzie too!
And BOY are you ever gonna be popular...
Not smart.
I wouldn't melee with it in a situation where it can get me in trouble. Hit some Orc Pawn over the head with it, fine, but don't do it in a raid type scenario... could be very deadly for you, and for all around you.
I like the stats tho, but for those going on about melee - we're not geared up to melee, so leave that to the tanks...
