So what does it look like. I am a High Elf Mage, and would love to get a black looking pair of gloves and boots.
Painful process

I found the process to even attempt making one of these items excruciatingly painful. The needle clawed hoppers drop the claws around 10 percent of the time (or less,) so getting the four claws for the needle took me something like 40 to 50 kills. THEN I could go after lesser shades, looking for a piece of Xakra Kel to combine with my tattered armor. When I tried, the combine failed, destroying both pieces of armor, leaving me with just the needle.

So, I'd recommend not using any worn pieces for this. Keep a few damaged hides handy to make tattered pieces on demand when you come across a piece of Xakra Kel.

Since I haven't been successful on any attempts as of yet, I would like to know if a successful combine results in both the shaded armor AND a returned needle? If I have to get 4 claws for every new piece of armor, it's not worth the effort. If you get the needle back, then this armor looks like a great starting point for the "lowbie" adventurer.

No, you don't get anything back but the final piece. I made some last night. I would assume it trivials low because I have only enough skill to make raw silk, what I made for myself previously, and I could not advance at all during this process.

How do you create these?

You make hopperhide boots
1 damaged hopper hide
1 boot pattern

then take the result and combine with
1 claw needle (4 needle claws off hoppers to the tailor vendor in shadeweavers)
1 xakra kel boots (drops off lesser shades)

combine those in a tailoring kit and you get the shaded hopperhide boots :) This works with all pieces of armor.
