To answer your question, yes a lvl 41 SK could solo Inferno with ease. He is only slightly tougher than the regular named elementals... a real cupcake imo. Happy hunting :)
Killed Inferno a couple of hours ago.. he was blue to me at 32... had a 34 shammy and a 39 rogue, myself being a ranger... rogue and I died 2 times killing him... shammy died once... we were aggro'd by several fire elementals and that was the main reason for the death. None of us had uber gear... heck I am still wearing some banded equivalent.. Didn't drop this sword, but he dropped Short Sword of Fire... 7 27, 3 fire dam +2 instead of 5 to the stats listed above
I have this weapon on my 24 Ranger, and was interested to see whether the +5 Fire DMG is actually added to the DMG (like bane DMG) or if it was merely bonus damage like you see on many high delay weapons. Some believe it is like bane DMG, others claim it is like bonus dmg.
Well,I figured i'd give it a whirl and tried comparing it to a weapon with similar dmg, so i used the Jagged Blade of Mourning. At 13/25, its a pretty decent weapon, and I used it because I was pretty sure that if the Inferno's blade was bonus dmg with fire, it would be 12/27 or something like that, meaning that the JBOM would hit, on average, for more damage than the Inferno's Blade. However, if the Inferno's Blade was actually 14/27, with the 5 Fire DMG added directly to the DMG side of the DMG/DLY ratio, then it would hit, on average, for more than the JBOM.
I chose to try my experiment on something I could hit often (meaning green con) and something that would not resist fire, making the results more accurate. So, I chose Dervs. I fought 5 dervs (all melee types)(seperately) with the JBOM alone (with a totem in the secondary slot, so I didn't punch b/c of duel wielding)and I averaged 25 DMG per hit.
Using the Inferno's Blade, and killing the same 5 dervs (same lvl, same type - (1 male barb, 1 female barb, 1 male human, 1 female human, 1 orc)) and found the average damage to be 23 HP of damage done per hit
With each derv, I got about 13 hits before it died. This means roughly 65 hits per weapon. This may not be enough hits to get a perfectly accurate average, but I believe its pretty close. This leads me to believe that with the fire damage, Inferno's blade is somwhere between 12/27 and 13/27, ideally 12.5/27, as the damage numbers are VERY close to the JBOM, but the JBOM's numbers are just slightly higher, meaning Inferno's blade cannot be 14/27, as many advertise it to be.
That said, the value of this weapon is still quite great. The stats are quite nice, its got a very decent 10svFire, and dont let the 9/27 ratio fool ya...I'd say the ratio on this weapon is most comparable to a centi SS actually, with a Centi SS having perhaps a slightly (very very minute) advantage in the ratio department. Hope this clears things up for everyone...(including myself) as to the TRUE ratio of this weapon... When in doubt, try it yourself =)
Ok, last thing...I have a quick question concerning this ranger of mine... I have Inferno's Blade, Wurmslayer, JBOM, and Centi LongSword ...which combo should I use?
It appears this weapon also has 5 fire dmg listed (in the picture). That actually makes this a decent weapon in terms of dmg/del (14/27) as long as you're not fighting highly fire resistant mobs (or ones that haven't been debuffed).
While BANE damage adds to the base damage vs a particular type, this sort of damage is an "extra" which is calculated after the usual 2x multiplier - so this is more like a 12.5/27 damage weapon vs mobs that don't resist vs fire.
I'm kinda getting confused here, I was using lesser version of this sword (Shortsword of Flame 7dmg, 24delay, firedmg +3, and some minor stats) on my 12 ranger for good 2 levels today. He was max hit for 21 with it.... I think that effectively make the weapon as 10 dmg weapon(isn't it?)....../shrug
Inferno drops this. A named elemental on the island (full of elementals) near the tower with the portal to Fungus Grove.
I'd estimate his level at mid-20s to low 30s (but that's just a weak estimate, killed him with my 58 warrior when druid spotted him on track).
I'd rate this as an uncommon drop because inferno isn't always there (either a cycle on named elementals, one named per elemental type) or a PH(s)/cycle.
I gave it a whirl with my warrior and it's definitely a nice offhand weapon. The minimum damage landed is really impressive, no more "you slash xxx for 1" crap.
I plan on keeping one in my inventory until I replace it with something better. I'll use it in ToV vs fire AoE dragons. Was using a +15vs Fire sword, but this one has all the stat bonuses too.
For the level required to attain it, this a most excellent mid-level off-hand sword, imho. Damage, bonuses, resist. Pretty sweet for something so easy to get. (I'd think a group of 3+ mid-30s could get it pretty easily)
Inferno's common drop is the Short Sword of Flame. I have killed him 3 times (while trying to get Aero to pop) and he has always dropped his common item, never this...not that I care to much, it'd only got to an alt or get sold.
