My ranger has a skill of 250. with this item, my skill is 270/250.
This item still has value, especially with the double forage AA.

The forage cap is still 252 so if you have the forage cap increase AA bringing your unmodified cap up to 250 this is useless to you.

the reason it may be this because forageing is essentially fishing on land... same principle.. fishing had a hard skill of 200 unless modded. i think over time sony gave more aas to forageing but originally it was always meant for 200, thats prolly why the machette is acting silly.

I have my forage bot with the forage cap AA making her skill 250. With this item equipped I DO NOT the expected 275 skill(250+10%(25)=275). There seems to be a hard cap of forage at 252. So, with that being said if you have the forage cap AA, as of now its virtually useless to go thought the hassel of doing this quest for 2 extra forage points.

I just got the Forage AA and had the same problem with the Machette.
I submitted a bug report.

I had no idea the problem has been around for so long. I would have expected a fix since I'm not convinced this is anything but a bug.

The AA only gives those of us with a machette a 30 point increase. It Doesn't seem exactly fair, or documented.

With tradeskills having a 300 limit you would assume it would not be too hard to have at least a 300 limit on foraging although they don't work exactly the same way but similar. A failed tradeskill combine could be the same as a failed 2nd forage.

With my forage skill maxed at 200 and 4 forage AA's I finally picked up the machette. My skill is now 220 and my last 4 forages have all been dual. I think this is a definite improvement on my dual forages.

edit: 6 forages now.

Don't see it...
# Jan 19 2004 at 9:44 AM Rating: Default
This Machette seems to me to have a fairly short usable life span. If you're less than 200 in Forage, then I can see it's use, but it doesn't take long to get to 200, and then I see no use at all.

At 200 I Forage something every single time I hit the button, so how could this help?

Unless it somehow improves the chance of a desirable Forage, I can't see even doing the quest unless you're in the zone anyway.

Yes it ups your chance for a desirable hence a druid at 200 with it hits the tables at 220 and i have noticed a increase in getting the hard ones like bamboo shoots, mons vine, for this item, etc, any of the stop gap tayloring forages drops more frequently in there respective zones....so i use when im buffing lower levels or forageing for stuff for tayloring, i use the item, and it works BETTER, if that answers your question...:)kinda like a toon that runs a higher charm gets better proces, i have a bard friend, used ro get gem drops in OT??? and i did with him as a group.....his Cha changed the drop tables kindalike this does for forageing toons, and sometimeS for that 12k Robe of Intellect, ya need just one more bamboo shoott, so ya save the timeby using this at the start...:) ..hope this Illuminates the issue some, and i got this from some old Druid Forum board about 4 yrs ago, BTW, so credit where credit is due...:)

Was perusing this site looking for a fun side-quest and found the machete. I had the orchid and dawnflower seeds from my travels (first try in zone for flower, 4th try for seeds) and thought no problem. Boy was I wrong lol.

Got the vine after about an hour of foraging then went for the cactus in the scarlet desert. I don't want to think about how long (in hours) it took my to forage that nasty cactus, but here's the deal: 16 spices, 37 rockweed bulbs, 13 fishing grubs, 18 roots, 47 feathers. Then one cactus (lol--pulling hair out).

Good news though, got the machete easily. Raised my foraging 12 points, fletching 56 points, capped out on divination skill and got a sunburn while looking for the cactus. Enjoy the hunt! Well worth it I think, even for the hours spent.
--edit-- sorry, started with a 124 foraging skill in the scarlet desert.

However, if you will normally never reach the hard skill cap of a skill, then these will raise your skill cap.

I understand the doubt, as it wasn't clear until recently. Now it's pretty clear that this is the case, since they implemented the "new tradeskill UI", which shows your effective skill level, including modifiers. Prior to that, which happened long after the Sep. 4, 2003 date of Neonghost's post, it was a lot less clear than it should have been.

As of the time of this post, not only is the bard's cap at 55, but with a skill mod you can go above the 55 cap. Unless my bard is talented :) and yes I know I'm responding to an old post, but good info is good info.
Just did this quest last night
# Oct 03 2002 at 10:57 AM Rating: Decent
OK, just completed it last night - this is a fairly dangerous quest for a low level character to have to do seeing as how one invis/camo spell failure and you're looking at a fun CR.

The worst part was the twilight orchid - got lucky and while trying to auction for it someone hooked me up.

All the components for this quest are droppable and none of them are lore, but the orchid doesn't stack.

Here's what it looks like from a screen shot - as you can see, it's still lore, although it isn't no-drop, so if you were crazy, you could sell it - don't think I'd part with this sucker for under 1k myself though.

RE: Just did this quest last night

I did this quest last night and it wasn't so bad. Ported over to Twilight Sea and snagged a Twilight Orchid within about 15 minutes. Then gated to Scarlet Desert (I'm bound there) and had a heck of a time with the Red Sands Cactus, that had to be almost an hour of foraging. The Dawnflower Seeds in DSP took about 30 minutes and the Letalis Zenith Vine another 30 minutes. Back to Katta for the turn-in to Tobala Honeyjar who is upstairs in the garden. She did not give me a container to put the flowers in, I just gave them to her and got my Machette in return.

The reason why a 57 druid with a forage cap of 200 would want one of these is:

Tea Leaves in East Karana
Plant Shoots in Jaggedpine
Justice Fruit in PoJ

On Druzzil we regulary have people ooc'ing for these in exchange for plat, anything that's going to raise my chances at foraging these is worth it! Oh ... and I'm an obsessive forager. =)
Doesn't stack
# Sep 25 2002 at 3:50 PM Rating: Decent
No skill bonus item will stack with the same skill - ie/whether this item is lore or not, you can't get two of them for a total of 20%.

Additionally, let's say that they add another item that gives a bonus to foraging - we'll pretend 5% because it doesn't matter - only the higher % item will register, so if you have your (non-existant) Scyth of Foraging that gives +5% and this item which gives +10%, you will only get the higher item, the +10% - the lower item is wasted space.
Lore?
# Sep 24 2002 at 5:22 AM Rating: Decent
Someone just completed the quest, and after seeing the link. I wondered about the 10% foraging. Then he said it WASN'T lore, which made us wonder if you had 2, if it'd stack. So since player forage is capped at 200, and with this you could get to 220, could 2 of these get you to 242? There are several examples in trade skills where an item is trivial at a higher skill than the players cap, like fletching and pottery.

All this arguing about what this thing is good for... my need for it can be summed up in two words: Planar Oak.

The question I have here is does anyone have confirmed locations for the items that need to be foraged? Each name suggests a zone (Mons Letalis, Twilight Sea, Dawnshroud Peaks and Scarlet Desert) but I've foraged the Twilight Orchid several times in Umbral Plains, so...

Any information on this would be extremely helpful!

Sorry, but if you think is gonna *magically* make foraging easy for you then you should think again.

My forage skill is 200 and it's still a pain in the **** to get planar oak.

Not trying to be mean here... just didn't want you do be laboring under a misapprehension.

Plus, once you reach 200 the +10 % doesn't matter. No 'skill buff' item will raise you skill above its cap.

This has been stated many places but does not hurt for one more. Skill buff items can raise the skill above class cap to as high as 252, with 253-255 as special values. Only reason cant go above 252 is that skill level represented in gamecode as an 8-bit(256 in decimal) value.

Skill cap for Foraging is 200?

well...

Lets say I am a druid and don't feel like making 250 foraging I could just make it to 230 foraging skill and the machete would make the skill maxed at 250. Right? or am I off my rocker here.. I could be mistaken. if so please inform me. Thanks
RE: WantWantWant
# Sep 03 2002 at 11:50 AM Rating: Default
Let's say that your foraging isn't 250...

Let's say it's 255 with this sword in hand with a skill of 240.

Which would you rather have? And btw, if your skill isn't 230 by the time your Planar capable, you have some catching up to do.

230*10%= 23.0
230+23=253
RE: WantWantWant
# Sep 12 2002 at 12:47 AM Rating: Good
He doesn't have catching up to do. Foraging cap pre and post-50 is 200 for Rangers and Druids. Bards have it at 55. Its all listed on Casters Realm skill cap list for each class. Unless they are wrong, then don't assume because it's not 230 by the time you reach lvl 46 then you have to "catch up".

So this would bump your skill up to 220 at the most. 200 * 10% = 20 200+20 = 220

I'm going to go quest this item.

Why?

Not to help me on my epic (past that stage). Not to help me keep from running out of food (not a problem after about skill 80).

I recently took up tradeskills again, and need vast quantities of Oak Bark. Oak bark is insanely tedious, and a few hours spent on a quest to save me a half hour sitting on my butt in kithicor is well worth it.

Since this is the string that seems to be finding its self concerned with binding abilities and macros, here's my 2cp worth:

I have 2 hotkeys that are bound to abilities (or macro'd, whichever.) One is SIT, the other is STAND. As a 51 Druid, I maxxed my sense heading LONG ago and Forage is currently around the high-180s.

Heres how I set up my Keys: SIT

/doability <1-6> (forage ability here)
/doability <1-6> (hide, this one is great, everyone w/ weak eyes thinks I keep disappearring LOL -note: I am a wood elf so this skill will never increase, but it's still nice to use.)
/sit on (or just /sit works now)
/doability <1-6> (senseheading)

Keep in mind that you CANNOT forage while sitting, so that /doability MUST come first.

STAND:

/doability <1-6> (senseheading)
/sit off (or /sit works now, maybe /stand as well)

You'll notice on STAND I did not include forage or (un)hide abilities. You could add either, but personally I did not do so for these reasons: A) When I stand I may not want to appear, or I will by default when I move or cast a spell. 2)[hehe] I chose not to forage after I stand because when i stand it is to either cast or move and I don't want to mess with litte veggies on my pointer, purely personal preference.

Now I find this works well for classes that tend to sit and stand a lot (e.g. to meditate),;however, on my non meditating classed characters I need to try a diferent set up for sense heading. I have tried doing a hotkey that does it 5x per click, but don't remember/can't find the syntax to put 2 commands on one line of code for the hotkeys. Any help here would be appreciated. Or, alternatively, and ideally, sense heading would be bound to movement keys. This is another area I could use some help in.

Thanks--

Nice post btw, but just want to add one more thing that I have done. I create a "Forage" button that is macroed to do a pause after the forage then to /autoinventory. This puts the foraged item (if any) into inventory and lets you concentrate on what you're doing. The forage fails if you have autoattack on, but otherwise the stuff gets put into nice, neat stacks, and you never have to stop what you're doing.

There is a downside, however, that does not seem to happen real frequently, but can be dangerous. If your timing is unlucky and you are looting a mob or you select an item in your inventory BETWEEN the forage and the /autoinventory command you can get hung up. I have had this happen only a very few times, but Murphy's law being what it is, it can be embarrassing (leave me alone all you spelling cops). On two occasions I have had to camp out and log back in to clear it, but try it when you are just running around and see how you like it. I take it down on raids and when I'm in a fairly dangerous area, but it's really simplified my life.

One more thing: Tufts of Dire Wolf. I forage for these all the time since they can be used to make the weightless bags that sell for around 6k. They are highly sought after if you know someone who is a grandmaster tailor. Also takes 3 blue diamonds, but you can often find them for sale on a vendor for reasonable price.

Funny story: I was saving up my Tufts and dropping them off on my bazaar bot and wanted to be able to pick them up with any alt, so I put them in trader mode but priced them at 250 pp each. I figured no one would ever want to buy any at that price. I had accumulated 4 stacks and an extra 8 and had them on my bot. Someone came along and bought them all. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but since they really are a "renewable" resource, I ended up laughing. I hope the player got good use out of them, because he paid dearly. So now, I need to go back and do more foraging...Oh well, I can cry at the bank.

PS Sorry about the run on sentences...glad my old English teacher isn't looking over my shoulder.

If anyone wants to boost thier foraging skill just bind the forage hot key to your forward key and hey presto everytime you have forage up and you move forward you well er forage cant remember how to do it of the top of my head but it works. It can be a bit annoying with foraged items popping up when ya least expect em but do this as soon as you can forage and your skill could shoot up to 100 in about five levels or so

On the topic of binding forage (or sense heading or whatever) to a certain key:

A while ago I read a post suggesting the same thing for Sense Heading. It occured to me, however, that whether I am running across a zone or fighting a bunch of mobs, I end up hitting the left and right keys much more often than the forward key. So what I do to practice sense heading, which would work for foraging also, is bind the keys so that one hotkey (sense heading in my case) is bound to both left and right. Skill has gone up much quicker than it did when it was just bound to the forward key.

I haven't bound Forage to the left and right keys, because I don't want to have foraged items popping up unless I actually meant to forage. But it's obviously your choice.

Another thing I have done which is similar:
I recently started a ranger, and I wanted to max out the tracking skill quickly. So I bound Track to the left and right keys also, as well as sense heading. I arranged my tracking window so that it was fairly small, and in the corner of the screen where it was usable but not in the way. Now whenever I play the ranger, the track window is always up, and every time I turn left or right the tracking info is refreshed. This way, I am constantly practicing the skill, and I always have an accurate list of the nearby mobs.

Also I believe that it is easier now with the new UI to bind keys.. cant remember the details well enough to explain it here, but it's fairly easy to figure out.
RE: the point of this item
# Jun 18 2002 at 4:09 PM Rating: Excellent
You can also use the doability command to bind sense heading and forage together. Make a hotbutton with it and everytime you need to know your heading, you forage too.

You bind em by making a hotbutton and /doability plus number for sense heading, then another doability plus number for forage. I think the number range for skills listed under abilities is 1 through 6, numbered the same way hotbuttons are. Numbers 8 through 0 (which is 10) are your combat skills, not including melee attack and range attack.

I bind track, sense heading, and put some water and food in my inventory slots, then make macros and bind them to UP as well. That way I won't eat my misty thicket picnics or qeynos teas. Hehe. It works well for me. Everytime I move I forage, sense heading, track, and eat food and water.
