Skill Bonuses
# Feb 09 2002 at 3:07 PM Rating: Decent
According to official word from VI (although they have been known to be very wrong about their own game....) here's how skill caps work: It adds the listed percentage to the value of the skill, including going over skill caps, *BUT* no skill can go over 252 EVER, even with skill bonuses. Apparently that's hard-coded into the game math. So a druid or ranger with 200 forage and this item would have an effective forage of 220, so yes it will help with epic quests. On the other hand, if (as Fyrewalker, below) you have a 50+ druid with maxed meditate (which is for a 50+ druid, iirc, 252), then a Skill Bonus to meditate will indeed have no effect at all.

Hope this helps someone.

Almost right, just one little thing. Max skill cap is 255. This is a limit because the data type used has 8 bits. This means it can store 2^8th values, or 256, and 0 is one of them. So, the highest they can go is 255. If they let you skill up once more... you'd be down to 0.

Actually, he's entirely right; you're the one that's wrong.

EQ has always treated skill values 253-255 as status conditions, corresponding to "this class/race combo can't learn skill ever", "can't learn skill at this level", and "can learn skill once trained".

No skill in EQ can go over 252, as the original poster said. Stats can go up to 255 (since there's no need for any status bits with stats).

well duh.. Bards! Us bards get jacked for forage skill, so this 10% is going to be a godly asset for those of us who actually try to forage things on occasion only to get message after message of 'hahaah you failed' :P 10% more is 10% than we had before!

How can you be sure this wont have an effect? The med item you are talking about has only 4% med. This would be incredibly hard to test for. What test procedure did you use?

I don't need this for the foraging bonus, and I don't need it because I have no weapons, I'm just gonna do this quest because quests are FUN. Who cares if the reward sucks, wearing whatever you earned is just cool. I'm gonna do this quest tomorrow when I get bored.

I've done 3 SoL quests already, and out of them I've gotten a new 1hs, a new quiver, and a new earring that blows cougar claw away, and I wear them with pride, because I earned them myself. So when you're sitting in EC or whatever, and you're bored, just slap on a crappy quest won item, so people will inspect you in awe, wondering where you got all that no-drop stuff. :)

Doesn't matter

Ok guys, lets stop the rumor mill. This will NOT help MOST of the epic-questing druids and rangers because of two things:

1) Most of them are lvl 50+ and have 200 Foraging already

AND

2) If your skill is at its max. cap, skill modifiers have NO effect. I've tested this with the meditation enhancing items in Luclin with my lvl 57 druid who has capped his Med skill.

Sorry to dissappoint ya.

A caster at that level has a high enough med skill that it has hit the absolute skill cap (252). On the other hand, you certainly can add 10% to a 200 forage and get 220!

1) "Testing" like that is doubtful at best, even if you aren't lying (not saying you are, there).

2) IF what you say is true, and they don't apply the class-cap along with the bonus, then a person with a skill bonus item and 1 short of their class-cap has a better skill level than someone who has reached the cap.

3) IF what you say is true, and the class-cap does apply along with bonus items, then it is equally as dumb as *2* since all skill bonus items I have seen are so hard to get, people who have them have already reached their caps, or will in a couple of seconds if they just dinged.

4) Of the two dumb choices (*2* or *3*) that I present, I would put neither past Verant. I'm not bashing Verant; it's just that some of the stuff they've done makes me go "nwah!?" EQ still rules, though.

Druids and Rangers need to forage for there epic. I guess they would get less fails with 220skill than with 200. Prob not a huge difference but the quest looks easy too :)
RE: epic

At a skill of 200, Forage NEVER fails, the only result from a higher skill would be an increase in rare forages. The druid/ranger epic forages are easy enough to come by, but I see this being quite usefull when looking in Skyshrine or other zones for Drake Eggs and the like.

Actually, I've had a foraging ability of 200 for quite some time now and foraging can still fail, even with a 200 ability.

It doesn't happen very often though...

That's quite surprising. My last foraging failure was on "Thu Oct 11 22:42:55 2001". My skill level at the time was 199. In 351MB of log files since I hit 200, I have never once failed to forage up something, and I am a habitual forager. The button is *always* on my hotkey pad, and I press it whenever I see it up.

I can say with quite a bit of confidence that at 200 skill, you absolutely *cannot* fail to forage something up.
huh?
# Jan 10 2002 at 10:27 PM Rating: Decent
I gotta agree why would anyone want/need to forage better.

You hook it up with a hotkey that goes off when you move (use "user defined 1-10) and then it goes up quite nicley...same with sense heading.

Also my forage is now 130 something and i get food and unique items just fine. Maybe you can forage some better stuff now but from what i know of the game this item is just pretty crappy.

# Feb 25 2002 at 2:42 PM Rating: Decent
in case anyone else is curious about Simas' comment re: setting up a hotkey to go off when you move, i found the information below in a post under The Button Girl quest by a fellow named Agonizer: "set your Sense Heading as the lower right hotkey. After that go into your Options, Keyboard, then at "User Defined 6" press the up cursor button this will change the 6 to say UP. Now everytime you move forward you are attempting to use Sense Heading". Haven't tried it yet but i'm guessing it works as he describes. Thanks Agonizer for the info!
You miss the point

I think your missing the point with this weapon. It's not necessarally for constant use. the dam/delay shows that. it's not magic, it doesn't have any stats. It's for fun. Ya take it and show it off to your friends.

I think it's a fitting reward, for a quest that requires the skill.
(And as far as why would someone want a bonus to forage? At 210 pick lock skill, I still wanted those +2% picklock gloves from Maiden's Eye)

Could you explain in more detail how to hook up the hotkeys as you mentioned? I would greatly appreciate the info
Kinda makes me wonder
# Jan 10 2002 at 9:47 PM Rating: Decent
The current skill cap on forage for Druids, and I believe Rangers as well, is 200. An item like this makes me wonder if there might be a quest out there with the release of Luclin that requires something foraged, but you need a skill of over 200 to forage it. Otherwise, there really is no point to an item like this that increases the forage skill that I can see. Maybe parts of the Druid or Ranger Twilight armor quests are foraged at 200+. It would kinda make sense, but from what I've seen of the Twilight quests that have been solved, its nothing really special so far. At least nothing special enough to need a 200+ forage skill. Anyone else think this makes any sense? Or am I just over-analyzing this? :P

Yes the Cap is 200 for Both rangers and druids

Not sure about the Quest.

Yes there is a Point that Every one Posting here has looked over.. Foraging for Items that Are rare..Examples

Oak Bark in Kith (rare)
Cinamon Sticks in GFay (really rare)
Morning Dew GFay (rare)
Eggs in any Zone (uncommon)

Etc...

There are Many Uses for this Sword and They Generally have to do with Trade skills, and if i wanna get Some Cinny stix for my Baking skill i would rather have a 220 skill than a 200 Skill.

Just wanted to shed some light on this Obviously Mistaken Thread..This item is NOT useless, you just may not have a use for it.
