I had gathered up all the parts and of course they had sat in my bank for almost a year maybe more. Anyways decied to do the turn in of the sealed box of skulls so I got a couple of my buddies and turned in the box the NPC said all the right stuff however the mobs did not spawn, so I filled out a bug report and had a GM return my stuff a couple days later then tried it again... same thing happened, no mobs spawned reported it again and had my stuff returned and the GM said that noone else had reported a problem and if I did it again I wouldn't have my stuff returned. So beware I have no idea if the quest is fixed.
It's been a long time since I've done this, but I didn't want to lose faction w/ the little alien-looking PHs for the skels. So (w/ my druid) I rooted and dotted the little aliens - and then ran like heck for the zone down the hill. While zoning the DoTs killed the PH, and I took no faction hit. I left a few bat bodies around to "prove" it actually was my camp to anyone who came upon the spot while I was running around. Anyway, I finally got all the skulls. Oh, the little aliens were green to me - didn't lose any exp.
Just got my shield last night and here is my 2cp....
There are 3 spots which I have succesfully gotten skulls...2 of them are areound the castle, north and south of the castle(sorry, will get exact loc later), and the other is right at the cave entrance for zone in from Grimmling mountains, have gotten multilple spawns for the skull there. I have never seen any spawn near the castle or wall or in anything near katta castle.
All other drops were fairly easy for my 55th lvl dru even soloed the Burning Priest(he did get me down to 39% life farly quick, but I think he ran out of mana, he never CHed himself[second note about burning priest: I camped him every half hour, had a cooking timer on my desk and when I killed his ph, I camped set the timer for 25 mins{had to have time to med back to fom} and went and watched tv =). did it about 7 or 8 times before I got him to spawn) and that was my worst drop, eveything else was childs play. Took 65th lvl players, a pally, a shadowknight, and a shammy, a 54th lvl necro, and I(55th dru)..was like taking candy from a baby...also FYI...Dark Elves and Trolls are KOS in Katta Castle...lol
ive been going to tennebrous to farm acrylia but ive spent quite a bit of time doing the runner and made quite a bit of plat from selling rallic packs. anyways.....ive managed to gather 7 skulls so far and most of my kills have been to the right coming out of the tunnel from grimling forest zone in. granted im a ranger and can track from the grimling zone in to the katta zone so its fairly easy to see one when its up.
by the way im making a small fortune farming this zone between the acrylia which im using for my tailoring the windstones sell for 200 pp each on MM in the bazaar and im the cheapest price so mine sell first and i occasionally find them along with acrylia on the venders in katta when i go to sell all the runes and other gems i get. if im alone in the mines i just keep clearing both and keep looking for roaming cral ligis or whatever else may be close enough to nail. ive sold over 50 windstones (200pp each)and maybe 20 essence of wind (100pp each)and financed my tailoring from 165 to 188 and still managed to add to my bank account about 8k. its an out of the way zone with alot of farming potential with not alot of people like, oh say, rathe mnts. :)
By gleaning a bit of info from several posts, I was able to find at least one of the Tormented's PH's is a Grol Baku Soldier. The little bugger in question spawns West of the Vamp Castle in the NW corner of the zone.
At about location 1422(pos), 1260(neg) there's a little dip in the mountain. He loves to spawn or roam there (I find that most of the aliens like to get stuck there, in fact.) Don't bother with the named aliens (like the hero or earthcaller) as I find they are almost all on a named cycle so that players can do the armor quests.
There may be a second PH -- the other soldier that roams here -- but I'm just not sure about him. Try those two PH's and ignore the bats and wolves and you'll be able to focus on the true PH's.
Great Quest. I did this with a 51 chanter and a 51 ranger (then gave it to my 58 cleric).
Tormented skellies - about 3-4 hours. Rangers have the natural advantage of finding these guys and most of the time I got them when running through the zone. Amulet from Burning Priest - 1 hour. He happened to be up while I was hunting in this zone so we and killed him. Was a REALLY TOUGH battle. Put slow, cripple, and weaken then continually cast berzerker strength on my ranger. When he was low on health I mezed him and the ranger healed himself. Repeated this a couple of times. When the ranger was oom, I kept this guy mezed while my ranger medded. This fight did take about an hour. This was by far the hardest fight I've ever won. Thought Leach Brain - 4 hours. Boring camp Charcoal in ME - had to use cleric/ranger. Took about 2 hours. Lots of trains :( As for the rest of the fights, I brought my guild. Cake fights when you've got level 65's with ya :)
Great Quest. I solod this as a 55 Shaman up until the last 3 battles (Skellys in Kalla and the 2 Grimling Forest battles).
Time for me was--> * Tormented Skellys in Teneb... 13hours * Amulet from Burning Priest in Scarlet... 6hours(i got help on this.. would be close soloing i think) * Thought Leach brain ... 4 hours * Charcoal in ME... 3 hours and some exp)
If i did it again i'd bring a 37-43 guild Melee with me so he/she can get PL exp while camping. -Zool 56 Shaman of Povar
If you are a binding class and arent in an urgent hurry to finish the quest I recommend you do the burning priest this way:
Set you bind point just near him. Every now and then just bind to the loc and check if he is up - if he isnt kill PH and gate out. Many players hunt reveanants here and will pull the PH but leave BP alone due his difficulty - sooner or later he will be up when you check in.
As mentioned below when camping the tormented skulls some spawns get stuck in the wall and you can agro them most of the time if you get real close to the wall. For the Grol baku soldiers (place holder) you must be KOS to get them to agro. You can speed up your KOS faction by hunting GB soldiers (etc) in the zone. Conveniently they drop gems and acrylia relatively frequently. keep that acrylia for the bazaar mule or your friendly tailor/smith.
Tormented and other PH (bats) are KOS so no prob with them
This can be a problem and was for me. I Hunted Tro Jeg in SD for drops for a long time, so Grol Baku faction could not possibly get any better =P Here's what i did. I two boxed with my sk, if mob was stuck in wall, I had pet follow sk to wall, the typed '/pet attack a grol baku soldier, presto chango, pet says' attacking a grol baku soldier master!" Then i stepped back and waited for baku to come out and pay his respects to me. No problem :)
Well, my first suggestion would be to start the skull piece of the quest in your upper 30-mid 40's. As a druid, i quad kited wolves until I got my second AE DD, then moved over to quadding Vampyres (good quadding xp until 50-ish). Its alot easier to get these guys in between pulls than it is just camping the tormented vah shir.
The main spawn point in my experience is where the Katta City wall ends near the grimling caves. There is a tree here, which is the most commmon spawn spot I found. If you're quadding, med at entrance to Katta, your track will pick up this Tormented spawn point, so you don't have go to the spawn point between each pull (if your xping).
The quest write up here mentions that occasionally, spawns will get stuck in the wall to the city and cant be pulled. This happened to me 3 times, track would run me into the wall right beside the spawn point I mention above. Well, I got mad the third time and petitioned, but while waiting I discovered a trick. If you keep walking up to the wall (near the tree) and sitting down, eventually you will sit within the mob's aggro range, and he will come charging out of the wall after you. This worked on three separate occasions to get mobs out of the wall.
Can't think of anything else at the minute, best of luck all.
spent 28 hours getting skulls. Did turn in with a full group and kept courier in the hall. Made sure all skells were rooted to keep them from wandering. Killed all in sight and still only got seven skulls back. what now? Start again?
Ok I'm a Dark Elf necro. I'm looking to do this quest I have run across the charcol, leach brains and amulet in my travels and was wandering if I would be KOS with Roshawna Rhorer or not. I'm looking to MQ this shield for my shammy, is this possible???
I don't know if you'd be KOS (you may have to fix faction by killing Seru guards in Marus Seru), but there's no need to MQ for your shammy, as the shield IS DROPPABLE. Just do the quest with your necro, and transfer the shield over. (And your shammy can sell it whenever he gets an upgrade.)
You need 8 skulls and they are droppt from "a tormented Vah Shir".
I would recomend that you read the quest walkthrou. There is described where you camp them, how the look, what the PHs are and everything else you need to know :D
I've Done this quest once for myself and helped out with it on 7 or 8 occassions for friends. So here's my experience. The Skellie camp takes about 12 hours on average. If you're unlucky it can be worse. BP is a random spawn and is the same, I've had him pop in 15 minutes and I've also been there for 5 hours with no sign. He's easy if you just chain stun him. Thought Leeches seem to be the easiest. Just go to Mons Letalis and pull the cave there. We looted 9 in an hour. Toilers are horrible I've spent time in groups just killing these guys for xp and seen 1 charcoal drop in about 20 hours. Best place to kill the courier is the hedged courtyard. I've never seen it go wrong there. Always had 8 pops. The Possessed Grimling and the 2nd Skells are probably the worst fight. Take out the Grimling first and have a couple of folks to distract the Skells. The last mob is easy. He's a shaman and his spells are nasty. I've never seen him land a spell. You folks have missed the obvious. Yes, he's unstunnable but he ain't uninteruptable. Chain stun him and he never gets to cast a spell. After that he's just a weak hitting mob with a lot of hp. He's never caused us a problem. Hope this helps folks.

This quest takes FOREVER and then a couple days more. Took over 12 hours of camping to get 8 skulls and that was only the beginning of hell on Norrath. If someone does this quest and sell this shield should be worth at least 40k simply because you not only buying a great shield but buying someones days logged on getting these items. BURNING PRIEST took 26 1/2 hour straight to finally see him pop. Brain about 2 hours and Charcoal in about 5 hours.
It seems to average around 30k on Tunare. The BP also gave me the most fits when we were doing it for my wifes shammy. We camped that SOB for 5 days STRAIGHT. not a single pop while we were there. at least 30 hours total camp. I died probably about 5 times there due to adds (we were pulling Revs for sun legs and other drops at the same time). Course it's all luck. Had him spawn in 2 hours when I did it for my cleric. Some peeps said you have better luck if you keep all the rev's clear. Didn't see that to be true in my cases. Have worked on 4 of the shields now ;)

I went to camp the tormented Vah Shir. I have listened to stories that this makes the AC camp in OOT seem fun. I get to the camp as a guy is leaveing said he had been there for two hours, and no skulls. Well, I Kill the PH first kill, second kill get my first skull =). Sucks to be him Im thinking. At this rate I will have all 8 in a few hours. Eight hours later I still had only 1 skull. is this normal or am I just unlucky. One skull in ten hours, if you add the guy before me?? At this rate I should camp the AC and sell the multi-quest rights, and buy the shield.
In my experiences its been completely random....i have 6 right now and heres the order i got em. 20 minutes - one spawn. 3 hours later - spawn, 10 minutes later one spawn (logged for a few hours, then logged back on) second kill - spawn. Log for the day, then log back on the nexts. Wait 4 hours, then 2 spawns in a row. /shrug, yeah looks random to me, and from some of the stories i heard, seems im pretty lucky
After you get the Box and Letter to turn into Spiritist Roleko, be sure to keep all 3 skeletons and grimling in close range. Wife and I did this part and both times we had a skeleton despawn or fall underneath the zone ground.
It may just be our bad luck but just keep this in mind when doing this quest.
I just read all the posts and I am amazed... The only hard part in this quest so far was the Flamed Charcoal.. took forever to drop. The brains dropped (2 of them) within of 15 minutes of going into the cave, and burning priest spawned in 2 hours. Got 6 skulls in 3 hours... Our team consists of 51 SHA & BST... that's it for camping the needed pieces. I wouldn't recommend such small party for the actual fights ;)
Good luck to ya all.

it took me 20 hours to get all the skulls i needed for this quest. Haven't gone after the brain yet that's tomarrow. hope i have luck like the guy on top for the rest of my quest
You seem to have had luck on your side by the sounds of it. I spent a total of 8 hours for my skulls and 20 hours at the Burning Priest. I have yet to try and get the other two items.

Today i was told that the quest for this item had been nerfed!! Is this true or just a dumb rumor to jack up the value... If some one could confirm this that would be awesome. Thanks
Not nerfed, I just completed it last night. Is a long quest though so well worth what the current going price is. I personally would never part with mine!!

Posted:Jun 29 2002 at 12:25 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I don't get it though......how come it has a cha+ ? but a bard isn't listed....i mean Cha only really effects yer saling, and how ppl think of ya in some ways. eitherway the only class effected by it is a bard... it should be str......would be good fer any class then..as far as a warrior they wouldn't ever use it. Its fer speed killing. If this had stre it would be perfect fer clr/pal/shd
some shammy spells seem to have the mobs resists based off of char .. at least so it appears... same mob with char buffed up and root and slow took over and over .... buff went and every damned one was resisted so in my own personel experience's char is for more than just selling
Took me a moment to work out why StrangeFire posted that comment. He was replying to another post that people rated down to Aweful, and the old filters kicked in.
Be prepared for a long quest if you're after this shield. My druid did this quest and it took him almost 2 weeks of full on questing to see it through. Lets see, 14-18 hours of camping for the eight skulls (extremely boring), 12 hours of camping for the burning priest, 4 hours for the brain, and probably over 20+ hours of killing toilers for the blackflame charcoal.
In the end it was well worth it. This shield is pimp :)
