I had no problem opening the bones with a pet, familiar, etc. I think you have something else amiss if you are having difficulty.

I can say with 100% certainty that I stood by the bones with all the mobs dead with only one character. That character was a shaman and had his familiar from clicking his Sokokar bridle that came with the current expansion. The familiar was not there, but the buff was as I had done the "/pet get lost" command. Upon trying to open the bones I got the message saying I could not open because there were guards nearby. I immediately clicked off the familiar buff and tried again and could now open the bones.

To confirm what happened, I then tried it with my cleric who had his Circle of Divinity aura up AND the same familiar as the shaman (the buff only, i dismissed the actual model of the familiar.) I could not open the bones even tho there were no mobs nearby (they were all dead) I then clicked off the aura and the familiar and low and behold The bones were now able to be opened and looted.

I would suggest that perhaps the problem then is the sokokar familiar specifically that is causing the problem. I did this myself so I know it is true, it is not hersey. I did find this exact bug reported long ago and appears to be the same thing which we have all seen time and again from Sony when they "fix" stuff old bugs come back so I also believe there is credible evidence that this is the case.

They said previously that there was a problem specific to sokokar familiars and mounts...and I don't recall ever seeing a patch note saying that that was fixed. So perhaps that is the issue.

This is a repost of the text on the actual quest, but wanted to put it here to make sure people dont miss the info.

As of 04Feb2009 this quest is still bugged. BUT....I know the problem! You cannot open Tharoff's Bones IF you have an Aura, Familiar, Pet etc active. CLICK THEM OFF and you can open/loot no prob. After MANY clearings and much forum-diving, i found this bug many months ago and it reared its head again.

As always, SoE re-introduces so many old bugs when the "fix" stuff, and this is no exception. Get your hand bones now before they "fix" it again and then it will be many more months until someone re-figures it out again...
