Vampiric Embrace adds a 19pt Lifetap proc to your weapon. It's a Shadowknight spell. I always have it up, as it seems to proc fairly often with +/- 100 Dex. Usually 1-2 times per fight, but sometimes as many as 4.
Vampiric Embrace damage/heal amount is relative to level. At level 22 (when sk's get the spell) the proc is 12pt dam/heal it goes up one point every level. Proc is completely random, although the common consensus with the SK community is that it doesn't proc nearly as much as one would like (to find useful). Personally, i wish verant would stop giving SK/necro spells to warriors (like that shadow step one (gauntlets?)). The thing that makes SKs unique is their spells. That's the reason we cant dual wield, crit hit (without AA points), have massive warrior hp, etc.. and to see VI just hand out spells like santa claus to warriors is a little unnerving.
well.. i've rambled for too long
EDIT: actually, i was a little wrong about the proc. the vampiric emprace spell that shadow knights get caps out at 25 dam/heal (level 38 i believe)and when it procs it says "You begin casting VampiricEmbraceShadow...".
the vampiric embrace spell that necros get doesnt cap out (at lvl 60 it is 72 dam/heal), and when it procs i think it says "You begin casting VampiricEmbraceNecro..."
these gauntlets for warrirors proc the NECRO version, but for shadow knights proc the SHADOW KNIGHT version. i sincerely hope this was an innocent blunder on verants part, and i also hope that this issue will be addressed immedieatly.
I thought I would point out that these gauntlets probably don't drop off of Santa Claus, but rather drop on one of the level 40-50ish vampyres. Big difference there, I think, especially when you consider that the named vampyres are usually surrounded by several other Coterie, and that every single vampyre out here can proc a 200pt lifetap in melee. The winged vampyres are all casters, and are completely immune to root or snare effects, so if you're a warrior and you can actually get a pair of these gauntlets in combat, you've earned the right to cast this spell. If you're just a super twinkie that bought these for a few thousand plat or took some level 60 friends to farm for them, well, the effect probably won't work until level 50 or something anyway, so haw haw. If these are a quest reward, you'll probably need a shadow knight or necromancer to do the quest, since the Coterie seems to absolutely despise everyone else.
All in all, a very nice looking pair of gauntlets.
First off, these vamps arent really too rough, seeing as how Shadowknights (notice I said Shadowknights) can wear these gaunts, and it appears that they can "fear kite" these vamps (wow) The whole idea of Warriors getting right-click gear from different classes is rather cruddy, they are already the best dmg soaker, 2nd best up-front melee, and have about 10 discs that fit every stable desire. I feel if Warriors can get Shadowknight spells, and others from their Cobalt gear, maybe I (sk) can possibly get a self heal? Or at least maybe we can have a haste spell (49pal), or heck, even a decent DoT for the ubber levels. It seems Verant is loving to claim Sk's are "too powerful" because we can fear kite, although maybe we should at least get a spell thats different than we already have (Vampiric Embrace and Scream of Hate). jmho though =)
This is certainly not the first item to allow a spell from one class to be used by another. My cleric has a Larrikan's mask, which allows him to cast superior camo (has charges, but can be recharged). He also has Jboots which allow him to cast the equivalent of a low level SOW. Melee classes have long been able to get the Polished Granite Tomahawk, which procs Berserker Strength, an Enchanter Spell. Now there is even a potion that lets anyone cast a clarity like spell on themselves. Further, the Luclin stones allow people to port between the main wizard spires, using the two step method of porting to Luclin, and then back to a different spire. Anyway, this isn't going to suddenly make Warriors an unbalanced class, or make Shadowknights obsolete.
BTW, you can get self heal. The fungi tunic's regen allows any non-healer class to heal between fights, and a few items have at least limited heals on them (e.g. stein of maggok, heal potions) for emergencies.
oh yeah, i agree with most of what you are saying, BUT its not the effect that urks me, its the principle. warriors should have as little to do with magic as possible. the entire base of that class is melee and defence. this should come through weapons and armor, not clickable effects. this effects isnt going to unbalance much of anything; like i said, it doesnt proc much. however, verant knows that some lines shouldnt be crossed (like the hasty nerfing of the rod of annihalation), and i hope that they realize that procs for warriors (even the ones on the cobalt) are a little out of line.
take this all with a grain of sand tho, its just my opinion, which everyone has a right to, and im glad that you are voicing yours.
(a little off topic, i dislike the effect of the fungi tunic. too many monk twinks with fungis imo =D)
Tell you what. You start a warrior. Level him to 60+. Try to tank in high end zones using no magic. Oh yea, and from what you are saying, not even buffs.
You will not hold aggro, your group will die fast.
Now put an SK up against the same MoBs. He will hold aggro with absolutely no problems. 99% of the time he will tank just as well, if not better because nobody has to worry about pulling aggro off him.
I don't even want to hear a Pally or SK complain about Warriors ever. Period. Warriors are hurting badly right now. The majority of Paladins and Shadow Knights have the same or higher AC and HPs as I do and I'm not a bad equipped Warrior. Add to that the fact that I have to struggle to hold aggro where SKs literally get spells that move them up the aggro list a ton at a time and Paladins can simply stun thier way up the aggro chain and Warriors are a second rate Tank, at best. The only time Warriors should ever be used as main tanks are when Defensive is a must. Other than that, they are the last one you want trying to hold aggro.
Bottom line is if I could start all over again, I'd pick an SK over a Warrior any day of the week. They are by far the best tanks in the game and a sorely underplayed class.
It sounds to me like you are not very high level yet. Once upon a time, I could tank very well with no magic gear (which is good since I wasn't a twink). Eventually you will realize that Warriors need all the effects they can get if you want them tanking at all. Without my Frosty and Snowchipper/BBoT procing, theres no way a MoB would even stop to spit on me. Without my haste items, I'd be screwed as well.
Also, who gives a crap if people are twinking alts with Fungi Tunics? No matter what argument you try to make, it will never effect you in any way.
Have you ever actually killed one of these vampyres, from the crypt, using darkness and fear, while solo, whithout getting any additional monsters during the fight, and ending up with a pair of these gauntlets in your inventory for the effort?
Can paladins make themselves invisible? Can a warrior or a paladin feign death? Would you trade either of these abilities for a self-heal or a better DoT spell?
I thought it was pretty clear that my post was full of conjecture, begging for response and correction, not someone to call me an idiot and throw out more conjecture to back it up.
its vampIre, not youre fancy olde englishe version "vampyre" lol :)
And anyway stop rating your own posts because i doubt many people rated your post very highly due to its overflowing "conjecture" level and due to the cocky attitude directed at people offering constructive criticism.
Actually, it IS VampYre... Just ask any citizen of Katta Castellum. (This is the part where most people would add something like "Research before you post!" or something cocky like that, but... Nah)
