Seems I am fortunate that I did not get this mask. And I agree with both those who say yea and nay to retroactive. I agree most with those saying it was the wrong way to fix it. It should have kept some usefullness, while restricting the imbalance issues.

I wonder what would be the problem of keeping the clikky effect unlimited (only usefull thing about it) yet modifying it to work like the spell and have a recast regen time? possibly this is not possible with clikable items in the coding /shrug it should be. That would be the fix here... keep the freed up slot if wearing the mask, still give unlimited FD, limit its speed of cast if that is the only problem.

Playing a monk, we have an aa ability that reduces our FD recharge timer. Max cuts it in half, i believe. That is still a bit of time getting beat on. I only mention that as point of reference as to what may have been prob with this. From what I see, it gave ability to quick clik till success on FD. Guessing every 1.5 secs. That is pretty snazzy.

But leaving it a FD casting class only item AND dropping it from unlimited to the (disgustingly) laughable 5 charges.... not a good solution.

If dropping it to 5 charges, make it a bit harder to get and open it up to more classes, not all, but more. And when used up... those who found use for it can work their butts off to request it.

Totally late for discussion but agree... bad move on the result of this item.

Yes, they did this by implementing a reuse time on the player, not the item. Technically the item doesn't have a reuse time, the player does (destroy your mod rod and get another one and you'll see what I mean).

However - they could have done it with this item as well, had that coding been in place when they nerfed it (I don't really know when that was).

They now have the ability to put a recast on the item itself. They should change it to either mod rod style or to having a timer put on the player.

either that or give necros an item like SK's kunark greaves to cast right after a failed FD (when I need FD up the most)

the fastest way to raise faction with the coteries in TM is to kill the coteries in Maiden, this raises faction both with Katta and with Nathan Illumious.. that's why i am amiable in katta and in natans castle

Keep your comments regarding other peoples opinions on an item to yourself. Personally no one cares what you think or don't think about AMen. Most people posting here are intelligent enough to read a post and determine if the information is valuable or not.

You found the item useful...Great. However follow your own advise and quit whining about what people post here. Fact is this board is for peoples opinions on the item and EQ both good and bad.

And as far as attitude regarding concerns and people I think you should work on your own first before you try and educate the people here on what is acceptable and what is not.

This mask is a piece of crap. This is one of three instances in 2 1/2 years of playing EQ that has REALLY got me hot. (one other being having a 56 res cast on me, no xp back and GM told me "tough luck"). This is horrible customer service, as usual. POINT: the people who already had the mask should get to keep it, period. There is absolutely no excuse for me logging out with an item in my inventory and logging back in with a completely different item. Did someone rifle through my backpack while I was asleep?
They should change the future masks, or make the blood no-drop and more rare.... but taking my mask that I have ALREADY earned is BS. I could be spending my valuable time doing anything, but I chose to spend it playing their game, and all my efforts doing this quest were stolen from me. VERY disappointing. Also... Mathadon, you are a complete moron.

Well, I cannot claim I worked terribly hard for this quest unlike many other people. I visited the coterie in Tenebrous shortly after Luclin came out, and learned about the quest before it hit the websites. Got 4 akhevan bloods from a vendor, plain dumb luck, because their value wasn't known at the time.

Nonetheless, the changing/nerfing/fixing (or whatever you wish to call it) really angers me. That mask was *outstanding* for me as a necro. I'd have worn it if there were no stats on it, simply because of the unlimited effect. It not only freed a spell slot that was always taken, plus saved mana, but that mask saved my skin many, many times. It changed my playing style, allowing me to break aggro more often, and escape getting pummelled to death on many occasions.

I agree with most of the other posts...5 clickable charges isn't worth the time and effort of the quest. And without that unlimited effect, we're not going to wear it with those stats. While I'm sure aquiring akhevan blood is a cakewalk for some players in Maiden's Eye, that's not the case for the typical necro/shadowknight. I felt the difficulty of the quest, combined with the faction and class requirements, was a good match. But even if Verant disagreed, why not just make the quest harder? Or give it 20 initial charges that can be refilled? 5 charges wouldn't last me through a single hunting session...I get into serious trouble much more often than 5 times per day. The only answer I can imagine is that nerfing it was the quick and easy solution. And they simply didn't care to take the time and thought to resolve this properly.

Speaking of which, what was the problem? I can't imagine it was just monks complaining. And if they were, why??? If I was playing a monk, I'd be ecstatic that my necro and shadowknight group members could survive better because of it. If your group members are stronger and better because of an item, then that means *your* chances of surviving a group fight are better too Mr. Monk. And it's not like monks were in danger of losing their status as Best Pullers. As a necro, I certainly didn't rush out and pull for my group because of this mask. We know our roles.

The reason for nerfing the mask eludes me still, and I can only determine it's the "quick and easy" fix for someone's paranoia or insecurity. Whatever the reason, the solution was ignorant and poor. The players who worked hard for this, and even those who didn't, are upset. Nothing was gained by it whatsoever, in my opinion. Except maybe more shadowknights and necros auctioning in North Freeport for new masks to wear.

Horrible act Verant! They plenty of good solution and they chose the worst. THey could have implemented a second part to the quest to make the item without charge. They could have make the blood no drop. They could have change the quest for something harder. I personnely complained on the EQ forum how i was disappointed. Now, first the mask is COMPLETLY useless, secondly noone will do the quest again. and third verant destryed his faction with me. I didn't do quest before and i think i definitly will not do one now!!!

I found the 'quest' for the mask to be so amazingly easy. I killed some 4 arm guys in Maidens and got 4 blood, took about 2 days. Went to the quest guy and got the pouch, combine, turn in and got my mask. After using it for about 2 minutes I was positive the mask would be nerfed.

SK's were not meant to be better at Feign than monks are. Sure, the mask has a 1.5 second cast time, but ask any high level SK and they will tell you that interrupts are not what get them killed, it's the 14 second recast timer.

People complaining about how hard the quest was for the item are full of it. This item was easily more useful than ANY item in game for an SK.

I couldn't agree more with the previous poster. Retroactive means they actually penalize the players that took the time and put forth the effort (lost faction, plat, etc) to do this quest. When they realize they made the quest too easy, they RETROACTIVELY make the item useless??? Punishing players for their own design flaws was something I thought Verant would stop doing at some point. Guess I was wrong.

Bad move Verant...I was playing 3-4 hours a night and I literally haven't logged back on (or had the notion to do so) since the patch.

It's things like this (the nerfing and then the insulting comment about it being 'designed' to have 5 charges) that make me reevaluate coming back to EQ.

However, there is a flip side to this. If the did not change the old masks, then only those that rush to be the first get the rewards. In my opinion that is much worse. Imagine that you were too low to get the mask yet, that means b/c you didn't level as fast, or have good enough friends, or started to late that you can't have access to the same stuff. Thats not exactly fair.

In my opnion whenever they change an item, it should be retroactive. All the old insta-cast circlet of shadows should have a cast time, etc... It keeps the game consistant.

Poeple that are hurt by events don't usually see those events clearly at first.

Those who took advantage of the AAXP/experience/loot issues were in danger if being banned. Therefore, yes they were lucky, for they could have lost a lot more than loot or exprience or AA points.

Rocktitan's comparison of AA points or experience to an item that which can never be found again is invalid. Experience and AA points can still be gained with time, even if those who didn't take advantage of the AA/xp bugs have to spend extra time doing it. A prenerf item staying in it's prenerf condition even after a nerf is something that can never be found again by anyone. Therefore, you are comparing something that can be made equal with time to something that cannot.

Things in this game were designed to take time. If you didn't have to strive to get somewhere in the game, then it wouldn't be worth playing. That is why it's supposedly bannable to take advantage of bugs, although this apparently isn't enforced much.

All that being said, this is still Verant's fault. It should have been obvious to them that this item was too powerful for it's placement. If they would have made it with 5 charges in the first place, none of this discussion would be taking place. Everyone would just say "Another useless item..." and go on.

I can't imagine how you think retroactive is the way to go for ALL dynamic changes (nerfs). I mean, no reward for the people that get there first or that risk it all to explore certain zones just doesnt make sense. In this case, there were serious repercussions from doig this quest. It wasn't ALL that difficult, true...but faction was an issue and alot of people trashed Katta faction (especially ones that ruined coterie faction and had to make it up) to get this item.

2 things could have easily been done to 'balance' this item.

1. Make the blood a more rare drop and tag it 'no-drop'

2. Make the quest only doable for those with VERY high faction with the coterie, like maybe even ally.

Again, Verant took the easy way out and punished players for thei own design flaws. I, for one, have not gotten the bad taste out of my mouth yet and haven't logged since the patch. I worked my butt off for a week to get the blood for that quest and then it was nerfed. Talk about an empty feeling and a waste of my time (which I value very high).

If we applied that reasoning, then Verant would have to retroactively scale back all the experience people recieved for Alternative Advancement before they nerfed that.

Not to mention all the excessive loot drops in Fungus Grove, or the Crazy experience issue with the Grey.

If we retroactively scaled back everything so people could have equal footing as you say...you wouldn't even have a playable game.

I think your tune would change if one day you logged on and found that you were level 59 instead of 60...for the sake of equal footing. Or that your Epic was put in incomplete status and didnt work until you did this or that...so that others could have equal footing with you.

Or that no one should be able to kill the 4th warder and wake up the sleeper - as we know that loot will never drop again and no one but those questers will have it.

More power to them...so what! I am thankful that they got to the sleeper first. I am happy that those that benefited from the AA experience were the lucky ones.

It's another story to see people get hurt by bad business practices.

I'm not bothered by the fact that I didn't get my AA going like i should have when everyone was leveling like crazy. But, then again I put no time in it. Thats a lot less painful than retroactively nerfing everyone who did put time in it so that they would be on equal footing.

The game looses its appeal when people trump "balancing" this or that...over game support, customer service, and integrity. The issue isn't about balance, because that in my mind is a stupid argument to begin with. It's about the integrity of Verant, and its practices.

I don't want to see Verant or EQ fail, I wish it to succeed because I invested so much of my time in it. However, from a business standpoint, their decisions have serious negative impacts which so many realize, and so many up and coming MMORPHS are going to answer.

It all comes down to making customers happy and the dollar the customer provides for them to do it.

I am not going to bust a gut to get this item. I was going to do the quest in the hopes of getting gem slot freed up but now there is no point in doing it at all. Now if they made it rechargable then that would be okayish but 5 charges max is crazzy. I have been to some zones where the most you will get is a pelt off a hopper and yet the place is filled with level 25 to 30 mobs, and when I went it was empty.
Some of the things Verant have done to the expansion is silly and needs to be looked at badly and sorted out, as there are going to be alot of competition coming up this year and next year in the Online RPG's genre.

Coterie Mask of the Dead. They simply should not make this retroactive. Most people saying they are ok with this nerf are the ones who did not put up their time and effort doing the quest. I think this was a huge mishap on Verant's part, as I personally know 13 accounts who quit EQ over this act. People get upset when they put their time and effort into a quest, and later have it taken back(which is what they did by making it useless).

This is another big hit with typical poor management looking for a solution to a percieved problem by hurting those who took the effort to pay and play the quest.

It is these retroactive changes that hurt the worst. It wasn't the players problem, it was Verants problem - but they chose to hurt those players who did the quest. The reaction by Verant was not thought out, and was clearly an over reaction - the item was fine(even if it wasn't .. to make it retroactive to the efforts of players was wrong).

Verant needs to find better solutions to dealing with THEIR mishaps(I do not believe the garbage about it being their original intent of 5 charges. No idiot would even believe that - as the change makes it an insult to players to even do the quest). They could have chosen to make it no longer questable, or increased the difficulty of the quest(I don't see a problem with the item really).

Verants mistake is they see the things as NOW...looking for the immediate effects...Lets ***** over those who already did the quest because the impact is small. Their error is that the impact isn't small it's huge, and they and their friends here about it...then their friends...Verant's integrity is hurt and that is permanent. People can only be whipped so many times before they have to give up like a battered spouse finally gives up.

So many other MMORPHS are coming out soon - Never Winter Nights, World of Warcraft, Horizons, Dungeon Siege, Shadowbane, and a myriad of others. The effect of Verant's action will be felt later, not so much now, and it is this lack of reasoning that will hurt Verant in the long run.

I have played the game since its inception, and one thing is certain. Verants Customer Service is the worst monkey on their back. This customer service translates into how they reason nerfs, and how some changes are blatant losses of their integrity towards player efforts.

People don't like getting hurt, it's a simple fact. And over time its going to kill their player base. Actions that Verant do would be illegal in a real world environment under the concept of promissory estopel.

My hope is Verant would be more wise in their dealings with their player base. They have the market share right now. And its sad to see them do what they are doing to those people who take the efforts to do something to have it told them your time for doing it will be gone, and we in no way will provide you any recourse for that time lost(not to mention frustration).

The game is volitile. You wonder if anything you are doing presently will be in vain. Their is no comfort in any consistency. Verant has bad management, bad implimentations, and bad policys. In all respects Verants actions keep them in Beta.

It is my hope that MMORPH developers can learn from the errors of Verant to provide us a game that is not so harsh on its player base. To focus more on game enjoyment, content, and technology. Less on game balance issues ... Verant only hurts itself when it spends 99% of all its time on this. It stagnates the game progress, content, and just simply fun of the game.


I miss all my friends and RL family who have quit playing EQ. EQ once was a place we could all meet together for fun, and yet be so long distance. For a long time we had a lot of fun. But, over time EQ became a source of contention, and frustration. And it was deemed that no game is worth this.

Man I was really happy with the item I needed to free up a gem slot bad.. Thats what this item did for me the stats - not so great. Now it is useless, totally useless to my 55 necro. Anyone know what other items I could get that will help me free up a gem slot.

If it was say 20 charges and it could be recharged that would be okay

There is no way I would have spent this much time and effort to get this for 5 charges.If it had great stats and 5 charges or the stats it has now and unlimited charges..then yes.As it stands now I am very mad that I put any effort into this at all.I was very happy with the mask when I got it,now it will just sit in my bank and eventually be destroyed.

Think its funny how people were paying 500pp per blood vile only to have the mask retroactivley changed. I am glad I didnt bust my hump to get the blood. I think that if they would have made the blood no drop this mask could have had unlimited charges.

Nerf I think. Given the difficulty of obtaining this item, and the fact that it still has a cast time, AND the fact that it's usable only by classes that get this spell, plus stats that would be mediocre 20 levels prior to the capacity to get this mask (it does have to be equipped to be used)... The usability of this item has been reduced to essentially a novelty.

I guess it was never intended to be more useful than that, so I can't really complain that much, as I wouldn't have complained if it had always had charges, but previously it was a /good/ item and now... it's not.

It cant be that hard. So it has charges so what, collect a stack of the bloods and when the item is expended destroy it and get a new one! its not that hard. its still a useful item, albeit just a bit more annoying to deal with.

Can't be that hard? Maiden's Eye is not a playground for newbies. It's a level 50+ zone.

When the item is expended, get a new one? The item will be expended in less than 20 minutes for many Shadow Knights. If you're in a situation where you need to feign, often times you'll need to feign more than once. 5 charges would likely be used up during the course of one pull attempt.

The stats are meager at best, but for most characters over level 50 this mask is junk. The only single perk that this item used to have was that it would free up a spell gem. That perk no longer exists, so there is no longer a reason to even bother getting one of these masks. It's not even worth getting for the 5 charges; you have to equip the mask to activate the effect, and since nobody will actually be wearing it due to the poor stats, it would be far too much trouble to use in those life-or-death situations. You would be murdered before you could even think about digging through a bag, putting on the mask, and clicking it to activate the effect.

I haven't seen any posts regarding the level to activate the effect, but it's a very safe bet that the level to activate was 50 or higher. I would be against letting people twink with an item like that. However, I feel that the pre-nerf mask was a very nice reward for 50+ shadow knights and necromancers. Now it is not even worth the time to talk to the NPC about the quest.

One way to slightly placate the people who already have the mask might be to allow the Quest Giver to re-charge the mask if handed back in with another drop of blood... that way it's still useful for people on an occasional use basis, but doesn't make it a "must-have" item.

I submitted this quest about a week after Luclin was released... not sure why they didnt use what I sent in, but here it goes

You recieve a "empty Bloodskin" Lore Item, No Drop. Large container, capacity 4. Also has a combine button.
You need 4 viels of Akheva Blood. They drop in Maidens Eye, and Akheva ruines. They are not no drop
Put the 4 viels in the container, and hit combine. Return to Renaldok Masric, and give it to him

Renaldok Masric says 'Well done, for a mortal you have served us well.
Your faction standing with Coterie of the Eternal Night got better.
Your faction standing with Validus Custodus got worse.
Your faction standing with Nathyn Illuminious got worse.
Your faction standing with Valdanov Zevfeer got better.
You gain experience!!

The NPC who gives you the quest is named Renaldok Masric. He is a winged vampie that I encounterd on the ramp leading to the second floor.

One should probably also mention that Renaldok likes to step into the shadows and disappear, so be sure to have deadeye or some other see-invis handy...

When I use the normal spell you get casting time and then have to wait for the spell to reset then cast again.I figure I am getting 6 extra trys to cast FD in the amount of time I used to get 2.Simply because of the reset time.Thats 6 EXTRA,so 8 instead of 2.I might be a little off,but hey who cares cause this mask ROCKS!

great mask if you do alot of pulling for your group or guild...instant recast on fails and more importantly when casters break a good FD...stats are pretty lame but just switch to a better mask when not pulling...or wear full time to save a spell slot...easy quest for sure worth the time involved....if you wrecked faction its easy to fix, just kill Katta guards (not the ones in Twilight) or the NPC named Jonas in Ten Mts.

Ok...so what level is it able to be used?

Blood droppable....usable at level 1....my Sk 12 is there...~smirk~

I finished this quest yesterday with my SK. He is currently lvl 23. He can't use the effect yet.

I am assuming that the mask won't work until lvl 30 when you get the FD spell. Hopefully, my assumption will prove correct, as I can't wait to start using this mask.

ok so i messed up.. i helped my group kill one lil coterie once and i went from dubious to threatingly... now how would i go about gaining a lil faction with them does anyone have a clue on coterie faction boosting npc's? Please post here with some info hehe just got my 4 akheva blood now just gotta get the coterie's to like me. Also ya think if the quest npc you have to turn in to is an undead if thats the case could i just charm him and do the turn in?

it seems an excellent item. saves a spell slot for necros and sks sks if they had BE legs (long fd cast time though) can switch the slots. Masks arent rly that rgeat at high level. have abut 4 diff ones this looks like a very nice one. the mana and the spell slot opener is the can be used the most
