Just finished this quest in about 2 hours with my 13 'zerker. Poached hides were harder to find than the blood drops, but the Loda Kai poachers spawn fairly quickly around the cave area and in the cave itself. I've only seen the blood drop off the Loda Kai traders and only in the cave. Making the cape wasn't a big problem; got it on the first try with absolutely no tailoring skill.
almost ouch
# Oct 15 2005 at 11:07 PM Rating: Decent
It took me a long time to collect the poached hides until I felt ready to try the Loda Kai cave with the traders in it. In one night I had enough to make 3 shrouds and had a stack of 12 drops of Loda Kai blood (3 needed for quest).

Heeding the warnings about failures, I went to abysmal sea and skilled up my tailoring (for free via quest) to 54. I failed my first try at the combine... I was happy when it worked the second time.
walkthrough

Buy a large sewign kit and 5 stacks of any pattern from Tiamon Aroo in the thicket (if you dont have money help shainai a few times). Go to the poacher's cave. Every time a ruined cat pelt drops, combine it with a pattern. If a poached hide drops save it. You will need atleast 12. If a drop of blood drops (from traders only) save it. If you find any more than 3 bloods destroy them, or save them to help a friend. You should save every poached hide you get, incase you fail. Stay until you run out of patterns or tattered armor becomes trivial. Track down Sentry Ferin. Get as many hero shrouds as you can. Give 1 shroud to Kojinn Kaa. Slaughter Xakra silk worms and collect at least 2 shadeling silks. combine them to make a thread. combine 2 Hero shrouds, the pattern kojinn kaa gave you, and the thread. If you don't fail the combine you will get a Champion's cape. If you do, try again (this is where extra poached hides comes in handy). Assuming you succeed, take the champions cape and 3 drops of blood (unstacked) to priestess bast. Congratulations, you now have a very warm, very magical cape!
Trivial for Cloak...
# Mar 18 2004 at 12:25 AM Rating: Decent
Does anyone have a clue at what level the Cloak trivializes? I've a 58 in tailoring and have failed TWICE now to make the damn cloak and everyone else is saying they make them at 30 or so. And is there any data on the Champion's Cloak itself? Has nobody thought to compile the most important data about it (like when it becomes trivial) and post it?
items and who drops them
# Mar 09 2003 at 5:59 AM Rating: Excellent
best place to get the items you need are the Loda Kai tunnel.

Drops of Loda Kai blood drop from the Traders and the poached hides from the Poachers. Evil chars need to kill alot of Loda Kai to get to amiable, so save all the hides and blood drops you find for later when they like you more. good chars of course have it much easier.
drops of blood, and gor taku faction

I've been killing loda kai at the camp near crossroads for 3 lvls now with a currently-lvl 12 vah shir bard (named Jharin: take that, name police!). I have two questions: first, do drops of blood drop at the camp, or only in the cave? I've not yet seen one and am a bit too low to solo inside the cave yet; and second, has anyone actually noticed that their /con to the gor taku has gone down JUST from killing lodakai? mine has been dubious the entire time, leading me to think that either the faction hit with gor taku for killing lodakai is miniscule, or that it is a bogus faction message

at lvl 10 you should be able to clear that whole room by your self if your a bard, all you hav to do is kite them all out of there pull them all out side and kite. CoD, Hymm, Selo, Belo

While I was doing this quest, I found the blood droppping only in the cave. I was keeping an eye out for it at the camp, but didn't come across any.

As for the Gor Taku faction, I believe it's a small hit. At one point I was apprehensive to them from killing Shak Dratha for silks, and after quite a bit of the camp I was back down to dubious.
Well worth it

Lovely little quest if you want to put the time into it. Started it about level 9 or 10 I think. Poachers are fairly easy to find around the LK camp. The hardest item to find in my opinion is the blood. I had a higher level chanter get me some while he was clearing out the tunnel nearby. Paid him a couple plat I had on me for his services (note: be kind to others and they will be kind in return /smile) and easily combined everything without failing at all. Total game time I spent on it was....probably 1-2 hours solo. Definitely easier and faster if you have a partner or two.

How do i increase my tailoring skill? i have made atleast 20 tunics and not gained one point, i also put in enough points so my tailoring started at 20
Easy quest. Big reward!

This quest is a steal. I just did this quest with my 29 cat beastlord and at that level the loda kai are the equivilent of fire beetles to kill. That and just waiting for skins and blood to drop is about the toughest part of this. Make sure you make 3 shrouds. One for you to wear at the end and two to make the blessed cape. A easy quest that gives you 2 very good items IMHO.

Everyone is right. This quest was fairly easy. Only problem was getting thru Paludal Caverns. Myself (25 Shm) and a 25 Wiz were buffed by a 60 Cleric, and still almost died in those stupid caverns.

Anyway, I was indifferent to the Priestess when I arrived (she would not talk to me), so I camped the Loda Kai tunnel. Must've killed at least 100 Loda Kai, but I was collecting hides (they stack) and blood as I was killing. I was finally able to get her to talk to me. Hit the tailoring the first time (Tailoring skill of 38), and even had an extra shroud for my shoulders.

A level 25 wizard who doesn't know that you can get through Paludal Caverns easily by using the level 18 'Lesser Evacuate' spell??

Wow!!!!!!

Takes you right to the zone to Shadeweavers Thicket......

Lots of shortcuts using that spell, like getting to Qeynos Hills quickly instead of running all the way across WK. Kinda makes up for not getting port location in Surefall Glade..... But not quite.... I haven't used the WK evac yet, but was told that it works. I've used the Paludal shortcut many times....

It takes about 3-5 hours to do this quest depending on if you have to share the cave and if the lodai kai are droping pelts, I had a skill of 35 and I did this in the frist try. no contest I was just a pain in the @$$ to get the faction as a Iksar beastlord, but its all worth it in the end :)

I started this quest un aware of the race lmitations. Is there anywhere in the process where the result isn't no drop?
RE: No Drop
# Jun 24 2002 at 4:48 PM Rating: Decent
No, sorry. The only component that isn't no drop is the silk thread, which really has no bearing on the quest. All the turn-ins are no drop and there is no point to multiquest this.

Not so!

This can too be MQ'd, I just did it today with my Monk and Shamen. Have one person make the cape then when you go to turn it in, one person hands in the cape and the other hands in the blood. Viola, MQ'd :)

Had to do this as I originally collected the pelts unaware what quest they went to so had 12 pelts on the monk and 12 on the Shamen, and when I found the quest for them, the shamen failed the robe combine but the monk didn't... after a little MQing fun, my shamen has a decent for her level(18) cloak :)

I just finished this quest series tonight with my little Jharin recruit. Some useful info...

Both of the cloaks (Champion's Cape, and Blessed Champion's Cape), as well as the Hero's Shroud, are useable by the following: WAR/ROG/SHM/BRD/BST - VAH/OGR/TRL/IKS/BAR

Apparently, they've modified these items to include all races that can be beastlords. This is good news for you shaman out there, since this is an excellent cloak for a priest, with various different uses at various different levels.

Also, I have been able to confirm the faction modifier on the Blessed Champion's Cloak. As previously suggested, I held the Blessed Champion's Cloak on my mouse cursor, fired up Lisa's Cataloging Libretto (waste of platinum, indeed. buy this song!), and voila!

"This item modifies faction with Guardians of Shar Vahl"

So there you have it. All in all, an excellent quest, with an excellent reward, that will remain useful for quite some time.

My Iksar Beastlord was indiff to Sentry Ferin, and received the venerated cask upon saying the trigger phrase. Default CHA, only had the festive doll equipped.

I fully intend to complete this quest with my Iksar Shaman. While the faction modifier probably won't do much of anything at all for Vah Shir, since most start out allied with the Guardians to begin with, all other races (as far as I can tell) start out with the Guardians indifferent to them. Perhaps I can gauge the faction adjustment from this item when equipped on a character that started out with indifferent faction. However, I'm pretty sure that the Sentry who gives you the original quest for the hero's shroud will *not* give you the cask until you have amiable faction or better. As I recall, he would not give the cask to my necromancer (another iksar, imagine that) with indifferent faction. I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow night, and go find out first-hand.

Addendum: I have completed this quest with my Iksar shaman. The Guardians of Shar Vahl were indifferent to him to start, and Sentry Jerin would *not* speak to him or give him the cask with indifferent faction. I figured I could use a few more poached hides for an extra shoulderpiece, so I went back down into the Loda Kai cavern and killed some more poachers and traders. After getting a stack of 18 poached hides, I went back out to find Sentry Jarin, and he was now amiable to me. With amiable faction, he would respond to my hails, and gave me the cask for the poached hides. I turned in all 18 hides, to receive three hero's shrouds. Unfortunately, on my first attempt to make the mundane Champion's Cloak, I failed (tailoring skill 26, 180 wisdom, 126 dexterity). So I ran back to the cavern and zealously attacked every Loda Kai in the area, and soon collected 6 more poached hides, to get another hero's shroud. Once again, I attempted to tailor the Champion's Cape... and succeeded. Before tailoring the cape, my Guardian faction was amiable. After tailoring the cape, my faction was still amiable. After seeing the priestess, and having the cape blessed, my faction was also still amiable. If the faction items are actually working (with all of the current Luclin issues, who can really tell), the Blessed Champion's Cape doesn't seem to do much to adjust faction with the Guardians of Shar Vahl.

My guess is it's more akin to a directed charima boost to a certain group then a faction alteration. Same with the amulet of the haven.
Wanna know Faction mod?
# Jan 04 2002 at 9:30 PM Rating: Decent
Easy, cast Identify on it. I had the necklace from Shadow Haven, says same thing on it "this item has a faction modifier". I cast ID on it just for the hell of it and it displayed what faction hit it gave. So find a caster who can ID or buy a silvery mask.

Turaylon is correct in stating that this is nice for the level you can get it, though any level 8 wanting to take on the Loda Kai Traders would be strongly encouraged to wait several levels and go in with a partner against them or else get together a decently balanced, full group instead of trying to solo them.

To get the Poached Hides for the Hero's Shrouds (you need two Hero's Shrouds for this, three if you want to continue to wear one in the shoulders slot, too), a couple of good 10+ Beastlords with pets, or just about any combination of 4-6 good level 8-9's, can easily take down the Loda Kai Poachers (highest was BTM at 14 and easily soloed with a pet). They wander an area bounded by the Skeletal Brigand Camp, Loda Kai Poachers Cave, Gor Taku Camp, and the hillside overlooking the Crossroads.

Now, if only he were to modify that "useless around 20+" to "you can get better after 30+" I would be solidly in his corner.

The Blessed Champion’s Cape (AC+8, STR+2, WIS+3, CHA+2, SVCold+10, WGT+5.00) is twice as heavy, but arguably better than a Mammoth Hide Cloak ( AC+7, WIS+4, SVCold+5, WGT+2.50) for my Beastlord, AND I can obtain this 15 to 20 levels earlier than the MHC.

At these lower levels, especially since my pet's tanking effectiveness against MOBs is incrementally diminished between the last level of pet spell buff and the next, making it necessary for me to step in and tank a bit, I would want that extra +1AC, and +2STR gained with this more than the lost +1WIS.

All in all, not too shabby an item for a little running around between several different quest NPCs, a little Tailoring skill, and the level of the mobs you have to take down for the Poached Hides and the Loda Kai Blood.

Rest assured, there are much better back slot items than either of these later on in the game, too. If you have the coin, you can get better tailored than this. If you can get into the right groups in the right places to fight and kill the right mobs, you can get drops better than this. Until such time as you do, Tulayron is absolutely right – this will do nicely until you can upgrade.

This thing is really really great for a level 8 obtainable quest. It seems to me that VI decided they didn't have enough decent quests for young players and put a bunch in Luclin.

A level 8 can in no way solo this, if that is what you are thinking. My BL is 14, and they are blue to him, though fairly easy blues. If they can't be fought single in the caves (I have only fought them outside), even at 14 I don't think it can be soloed. A group of eights may be able to do it though.
RE: Wow
# Dec 28 2001 at 10:01 AM Rating: Excellent
Attainable at level 8 doesn't mean you have to solo it. Anyone in a group that hunts these can pick up what they need with patience just like most other things, I could in no way get Kael armor drops solo, yet in groups I was able to attain them. So I would have to agree with you, and people should be more wary about attainable levels. We don't want to see, "Hey that said attainable at level 45, my Druid is 45... Why did it own me???? Damn you all to hell!!!" LOL.

If you ask me the faction modifier on this is pretty worthless, by the time you kill enough poachers to do this quest you should already be ally with guardians of shar vhal, I have just done the part to get the shoulders so far, and am now ally to Guardians
And by the way there is another kind as illustrated below, Half Elf follower of Karana

Seems to me that since it is VAH only, it will modify a Shar Vahl faction. Most likely Guardians of Shar Vahl like it says above. Makes sense since that it would modify the same faction you are raising while questing.
RE: Modifier
# Jan 02 2002 at 12:34 AM Rating: Good
Before wearing this cloak was pretty much able to kill both sides of the aliens and maintain a crude balance. Once donning it all Gor Taku are scowling, ready to attack. Not positive but fairly sure this is the faction modifier.
RE: Modifier
# Feb 07 2002 at 12:27 PM Rating: Decent
My guess is that the Gor Taku faction directly opposes the Vah Shir faction. Of course if the cloak modifies the Vah Shir faction, the Gor Taku would not like you some much.
RE: Modifier
# Jan 07 2002 at 5:35 AM Rating: Good
Are you sure? more likely you just had to kill a LOT of Loda Kai to get the poached hides and blood, and killing Loda Kai gives negative faction with Gor Taku.
