NOT No Drop
# Sep 04 2002 at 8:38 PM Rating: Excellent
A couple people have posted that since the last patch this item is no drop. Well, as of September 4, 2002, this item is droppable, just got mine 20 minutes ago. Nice item too. I agree with the other poster -- if it says No Drop then it's because you have a No Drop item in it.
Now No Drop
# Aug 16 2002 at 11:40 AM Rating: Default
I did this qust last nite witha ranger friend of mine who has done it a few times before. As of the last patch this item is now NO DROP. Great pack as it holds large items like Strength of Grodan etc, and the weight reduction is amazing for a 10 slot pack. I'm one who likes to carry around an array of weapons and armor for different situations. My Ranger friend was very disaapointed that they had made them no drop now though. Was a good income for him before last patch. Peeps that don't like to take the time to quest paid well for this great bag. Guess they'll have to check into doing the quest now though hehehe. For the benefits this bag gives it's definitely worth the 2-3 hours it takes to get it done.

I have done this quest 8 times now but finally solod the runner for the last two @ lvl 40.

He cant be snared or rooted (neither can the Darkwing bats there!) so I thought it'd be impossible to do alone.. and trying to kite without snare developed into mucho adds..

Anyway.. I just stood toe to toe and nuked him while praying that I could channel past his hits.
Fury of Air is a fast cast plus I have focus spell haste II from my tunic and he went down before I lost 2 bubs of health. /grins

My agility being 114 might have helped avoid the hits a bit as well ...( not that its THAT high but every bit helps)

Another tip fr you Druids:
Lessor Succor will save you alot of time. Right after you Kill the runner use succor and you'll wind up at the katta zone:)

You need 4 components to get this pack made, and 3 of 4 can be done by a 20 level IF you know what your doing.

1) Get to Shadeweavers thicket and do one of 2 things - farm lesser shades (Lvl 5-8) and Xakra worms (Lvl 2 with 16HP exactly), or if many people are active, offer 5 - 10 pp per stack of shadeling silk. I you don't get sold any, well, break out the dagger 8)

2) Make shade silk thread by combining 2 shadeling silks in a sewing kit - make at least 4 threads.

3) Make a shade silk cord, by combining 3 shade silk threads.

4) Aquire 1 Perfect Owlbear pelt - they are ultra rare drops(1 in 500?) in Paludal Caverns, Rare (1 in 25-35 approx) in Hollowshade Moor, and Rare in Grimling Forest. Going rate for one is 100pp plus per pelt on my server.

***Oddly enough, the pelts seem more common as drops off Owlbear Cubs, followed closely by Owlbear Grapplers in HollowShade Moor - WARNING - Grimy(PC), Grapplers, Razorbeak, Fleshrenders, and others (HSM and GF) proc a 65 dam attack, as well as hitting very fast and hard - Some cubs do up to 45 damage max, with Fleshrenders peaking over 90 damage per hit. Do not triffle with them - While they have a small aggro radius, it expands once angered, and they are social. Kill them fast.***

The above CAN be accomplished by a level 20 or even lower without help. The following requires at least a 35 level who is VERY good, and being 39 will certainly help. Also, determine if you are KOS to Katta by conning the guards at the Katta zone - If you are, have someone else do the next part.

5) Go from Hollowshade Moor into Grimling Forest and follow the road near the fort - You will need invis or camo, or other invis ability - Stay FAR AWAY FROM the Sonic Wolves, Battlehounds, etc - They can detect invis and have a moderate aggro range, and hit as badly as owlbears, but more often, as they are faster yet. One Sonic Battlehound ALWAYS patrols the road - You have been warned. Invis is a must to pass the grimlings in the village that guards the road, and have a high ratio of casters among them. When you zone into Tenebrous Mountains, there are two rocks - get on the second rock, face the opposite wall and get ready for a long camp - The Grimling Runner will spawn in front of you at 90 minute intervals - Note on your watch what time that is and kill him. Take the Runners Pouch (Lore, No Drop) and go into Katta. When you exit the zone into to city, ahead and to the right is a big hedge, circling a HUGE building - Go straight aheadabout halfway along the hedge, and turn towards the building. Head to the outside edge of a door and click to open, head inside, take first left, into hallway, and halfway down, left again, then left to first door. Inside is Rallic Aristos. Just give him the Runners Pouch. You now have a Rallic Pack Pattern (Lore).

6) In sewing kit, combine Shade silk thread, Shade silk cord, Perfect Owlbear pelt, and the Rallic Pack pattern - TADA! Rallic Pack.

So my enchanter has made about 12 of these so far for guild and friends - I have never had a failure with a 27 Tailoring skill. Already trivial to me as well. The hardest part really for me has been owlbears - The Hollowshade War is a very bugged quest that is almost never reset properly, because the Leader mobs never spawn, except for Owlbears - Which really blows, because they are never up for a reasonable amount of time.

I started soloing the runner at level 37, and with a pet set with Rune 3 and haste, tash and slowing the runner, and I usually come out nearly unscathed. I've seen pairs of 32's take him also. He is immune to snare, root, darkness, and any spell that affects his movement. He can be mezzed though. Enjoy your new Rallic Packs people - I know I love mine.

the runner can be soloedat LEVEL 32 if you are a BARD. i did this today all you have to do is take out your drum and twist selos with fufil's curtailing chant and run in circles inside the tunnel thing at zone so that you do not get hit. it will take a while to kill him but once hes down to 20% life he will start to run, once that happens just beat the living #%@! out of him. I hope this helps any bards out there.

Yeah, it will be no drop if you have an item inside of it that's no drop. I got tripped up by that too and was spamming guild chat asking why my bag was no drop. Sure enough I had a no drop item inside =). Just check your bag.

Owlbear Hunting grounds
# Jul 15 2002 at 1:58 AM Rating: Decent
I read this thread completely, and notice that multiple times it was asked where to find the owlbears if the faction wars are in effect. Noone seemed to mentioned looking in Grimling Forest. I went there immediately, its one zone away, and got two of the Perfect pelts off of Owlbear cubs that run randomly through the zone. Saved me some time too as it is the zone away from the runner himself. I also noticed that noone seemed to ever be in the zone, so easy pickings if you have tracking. Look on EQATLAS folks, they list the monsters in the zones, and there are a couple of zones with the Owlbears - so dont feel so limited if the faction wars are in progress.

Probably because this quest is sooo easy to do. I did it in about 2 hours, solo, as a lvl 40 ranger.

The hardest part was getting the owlbear pelt, just because it isn't a common drop. Getting the runner is a joke. He spawns just inside the Tenebrous/GF zone, with about a 90 minute spawn. Just sit there until he pops and aggros on you.

Large Wood Spider Tarsus
# May 26 2002 at 12:43 AM Rating: Default
I am looking for any information on no drop items
1) large wood spider tarsus
2) larger wood spider tibia
3) large fruit bat wing
4) large yellow jacket sternite

They all drop in Misty Thicket, but I can find no information on EQ or this site regarding these items.

Thanks
RE: Large Wood Spider Tarsus
# Jun 04 2002 at 7:11 PM Rating: Default
You have to kill the giant spiders in MT to get the Tarsus and Tibia. They are random drops off of those spiders. The Large Fruit Bat Wing drops off of the fruit bats, also a rare random drop. The yellow jacket sternite drops off of the large wasp/bee/yellowjackets. I have looted one of each of these, but never knew what they were for. Everything is random and rare. Best is to start off at entrance to Runnyeye and kill all larger spiders and yellowjackets that you can see. Then go off to the right, near the goblin camp that drops the Crude Ore, and you'll see a lot of fruit bats in the area. Kill them all!

Good luck.

I got three pelts in about 30 minutes, and this is how i did it.As a druid, all i had to do was charm the biggest owlbeear, and have it kill all the other ones.Snare and Terrorize animal the owlbear its killing.Since these guys hit like giants, they rip through their fellow owlbears pretty quick. Also i didn't even have to go to the cave, because they were crawling all over the hillside. So if you can charm and fear, this is a easy way to massacre the ugly brutes and get yourself some pelts. :)

Pelts
# Apr 27 2002 at 11:28 AM Rating: Decent
I spent about four hours in the owlbear caves this week, and got six pelts (four were for guildies). You have to kill everything in sight, and you have to kill a lot of owlbears per pelt. The drops I got were all in the very back of the cave, where one of the named owlbears spawn.

The only thing to be careful of is owlbear defenders, who seem to spawn in a group in front of the entrance to the caves. When the defenders are up, there are five owlbears guarding the entrance. Be careful of these, they are no tougher than the other owlbears, but they summon ... repeatedly. As I was leaving the cave once, I caught aggro from three, and when I tried to run I got chain summoned. I finally had to stand and slug it out. Luckily, they hadn't all aggroed on me, they have a fairly tight aggro radius.

Kind of interesting that Allakhazam has a quest involving the perfect owlbear pelt listed, but the perfect owlbear pelt isn't in its equipment inventory ....

As a Vah Shir Beastlord I see a lot of folks come to Hollowshade Moor to farm owlbear pelts who haven't a clue what they are doing. With the war scripts now active in the Moor, those of you who go with a scorched earth policy when hunting owlbears usually trigger the war script. When you kill every owlbear in sight, including the owlbear defenders outside the cave, you allow the grimling or sonic wolf invaders to defeat the owlbears. When this happens, poof, no more owlbears until the war script is completed and the zone is reset. This usually results in the moor being stuck in a mid-war state because the person who triggered it either didn't know what he/she was doing in the first place, doesn't have the capability to complete the war script, or just doesn't care. Since this zone, and the owlbears in particular, are essential to many of the Vah Shir quests, you tend to leave the young Vah Shir in a lurch. A simple way to prevent this from happening is to not kill the owlbear defenders when they spawn in response to a threat from the grimlings or sonic wolves, at least not until after they have beaten off the threat.

My 2cp's worth...

Been camping where the Owlbears moved to in Hollowshade (the grimling camps on sandbars)..and killed 24 owlbears and no perfect pelts. Used to be one out of 12..arrgh.

I dont seem to remember a particular TYPE of owlbear dropping the pelt..does ANYONE have any clue?

P.S. Now the smudge stick is gone...or has new spawn loc..so it should go astronomical now. (The Nameless server has STRANGE logic on prices...expecting to buy low even when quest is nerfed, but chargin astronomically more than what something is worth at the HINT of a nerf)

Yo runin ole pal the grimling chief dropped the smudge stck the other day.

btw the secret to escaping those fast little F^* after u loot the chief is to be leved and sowed and run off a steep hill, they will have to run down the hill as you run straight out and cover more distance which then gives you time to gate.

Me and my mate were camping grimling chief the other day and he dropped smudging stick, staff of living sand (which im selling )and the mortar and pestle thing oh and lotsa runes and acrylia blocks/bricks(which one guy in EC was buying for 50pp each) this was on the Seventh Hammer so I don't think the smudging stick has been moved more the dop rate has been lowered on the chief. Perfect Owlbear Pelts
# Apr 04 2002 at 1:52 PM Rating: Decent
I got one of these within about 10 kills in the cave with fleshrenders.

The second time I tried was right after I helped some vah shir kill the grimling prince and company who had taken over the fort in hollowshade. I spent about 3-4 hrs killing every kind of owlbear in and outside the cave. Got lots of "damange owlbear pelts" and "owlbear pelts", but no perfect one. Some vah shir I had helped earlier to clear the fort took pity on me and gave me one.

Moral or the story? It seems that after the owlbears repop after an "npc grimling vs. owlbear" war, that the owlbears are damned stingy with the perfect pelts.

It was quiet in the zone, Hollowshade Moor, 33 Ranger starts tracking for blue. Gorehorn hits for 88, jees stop track and run to kitty zone. Mend up and track again, gorehorn is gone. Tracking owlbear. Run pass outpost then left over the hill to see the valley swarming with owlbear. Can figuer this since I camped area with a 15th level Beastlord at a time when the zone first opened up and had no luck with owlbear sightings. I think they fixed the zone. Owlbear every where. wow. March 2002 is in like a lion for sure. Cant wait till April 2002 to see more improvments, like Grimling Forest hehe.
Went next night to see track filled with grimlings.

Tailoring Skill for Rallic Pack
# Mar 25 2002 at 3:41 PM Rating: Decent
Hi all,

I just did the quest last night. I'm a level 44 monk and my tailoring skill was at 10 when I started combining shadeling silks.

I combined all silks into threads, then three threads into a cord, with no failures with a Tailoring skill of 10.

I did the quest twice last night and was able to make the Rallic Pack with no failures.

Misc. Notes: The perfect owlbear pelts are not lore items, they are stackable pelts. They drop from the owlbear fleshrenders in the northeast area of Hollowshade--in the owlbear caves.

Lesser Shadelings in Shadeweaver's Thicket drop plenty of shadeling silk. There's a place where many of them spawn in the zone at pos 1800 neg 1800.

Remember to make FOUR (4) Shadeling Silk Threads. Then place three of them, unstacked, in your sewing kit to make the Shadeling Cord.

Luck,

Z.

That would be hard, you'd need to run him around some. and adds in this zone are nutty. Your best bet would be to pull him into the cavezone to Grimling forest, and kill him next to the zone. It is incredibally iffy at best.
He's not easy, and i'd imagine he's gonna be harder for you to hit than me

Rallic

OK, here's the Rallic pack Quest. I've done it twice now, coz after a 23hr straight run, in a momnet of delerium i destroyed my Rallic pack instead of my CP, LOL!! (it hurt). First time: I go to hallowshade, (get bound in kitty city) (ranger ~40th) The first thing on my list is a Perfect owlbear pelt, i figure ill hit the caves and eventually get one. I walk out of the kitty city, and i see an owlbear, kill it...perfect pelt LOL luck. So head over to shadoweaver's thicket to kill some Xakra silkworms for shadeling silks. I need 8 silks total. 2 silks makes one thread, 3 threads makes one chord. You need one chord and one thread (8silks). Xakra's are easy and everywhere, this is a newbie zone. Tracking is a plus, but not necessary. I suggest you bring a LARGE SEWING kit with you, in case you fail either the threads or chord, you are right there to make them again. After you have the thread, chord, and pelt head to Tenebrous Mts (nasty place). When you zone in cut left along the south wall, and travel west. You will eventually come to the first of the grimling mines. OK the first time i did this quest, the runner was up right away. He practically walked over to the zone for me). He was a little tough, no problem tho for a 40th wood-elf ranger of Tunare) Not especially fast for a "runner". Got the pouch (always drops), and went west to the Katta Castellum zone, where Rallic resides. I turned the pouch into rallic, i got the pattern and some xp. OK, before i started this quest i had never tailored anything, i went and trained 17 points in tailoring at my guild. ( Rallic pack appears to be 17 trivial(ammendment3/29/02: Rallic is trivial at 0, i dont think it is failable, BUT the silk chords are trivial over 23 (what im at) so get it up over 20, it sucks failing chords), i have made 3 now no failures, on my server they aren't no drop pattern or packs) So now i have everything... I combine the pattern, perfect owlbear pelt, shadesilk thread, shadesilk chord...voila Rallic pack.

OK, the second time i did it, will be of more use to people, coz it involved camping things. The first quest i did in under 2 hours and was EXTREMELY lucky to have everything waiting for me). First a friend of mine and I went to the owlbear caves to look for perfect owlbear pelts. I was curious as to how long it would take, coz i got sooo lucky getting one on my first kill before i thought. We cleared the entire cave, and cleared the two main room 2 times each, wanted a named owlbear to pop, which he did. In that time we got 4 perfect owlbear pelts, maybe 2 hours tops. So not too bad to get) BUT, i was 43 at this point and they were green to me, still hitting for up to 88! OK we then moved on to Xakra silk worms again, other people were hunting them so they were sparser this time. For about 30 mins not one Xakra popped ( ihad failed three chords in a row (18silks total ouch!!) so i had to stay a bit). I started thinking they had PH's so i killed EVERYTHING. Still none popped. Then all of a sudden i was tracking like 6 then 8 then 10. They just have a cycle. So if they arent there wait, or go to another part o fthe quest and come back.
Finally back to Tenbrous Mts, for that runner. Will i be so lucky to see him when i zone in again...nay. So my friends and I (43 druid, 41 sexy cleric) head over to the grimling mines to camp some orefinders knowing how sought after acrylia is. We campd these beasts for about 2 hours, in that time the runner popped twice, he pops outside and to the right of the cave, and then walks towards the mouth of the cave, killed him there twice. Grabbed the pouch, went to Katta got the pattern and made apack for both me and my druid friend) WOOHOO i can carry loot again!!! This is all you need to know)

There seems to be some sort of war going on between the bears and the sonic wolves. Spent a few hours trying to get a perfect pelt, and saw three sonic wolves attack the "owlbear defenders" (owlbears that summon, if you can believe that), while a squad of bears walked out single-file to the sonic wolf caves and attacked the wolves. Spawn rate on bears dropped to slooow, and didn't get any type of pelt from any of em.
