This weapon is a piece of crap. I looted it yesterday off some banshee lookin mob on the second floor, forgot the name but it wasnt a regular banshee you find on the first floor of hate. If it had an instrument effect ,it would be good. But 11/25 for something that drops in a plane with no effect or stats or known uses in any quests is just plain rediculous.VI needs to update some of these plane drops, the risk/reward ratio is just too high for alot of the crappy drops. As far as it being a light source, big deal, theres other light sources that are way easier to obtain.
-if it's a lightsource then putting it in your range slot means you can see. -bards can't use bows and mine hasn't thrown a throwing weapon since I got bellows at 12 or 13 or whatever so range isn't even hotkeyed for me. (at 51 I use a chant of some sort or chains to pull) -NODROP means you can't place the item on the ground or trade it with someone, throwing a weapon does neither, it just has a chance to hit the target and the weapon you have thrown disappears -some very strange stuff is range slot equippable like a kerran toy or the pottery dolls for clerics and such or the necklace that magicians summon so a piercing weapon that is range slot equipable isn't that odd. -many piercing weapons in game have a range listed and can be range slot equipped, many of these are more valued for their stat boosts than for their use as a weapon, the runed bone fork and dragoon dirk are good examples of these. -I'm not sure if the people below were suggesting that you can increase the melee range of your main weapons by having this in range slot or that you could throw it but the former simply is not true and the latter would be a waste. -11/25 piercing weapon that you don't have to spend a fortune on or roll against some guy twinking his level 5 bard so if nothing else keep it around to keep your piercing skill up.
And just an incidental FYI for those who don't pay attention to the stuff they loot-- Lots of weapons of ALL types that are not listed as Throwing skill weapons do have a Range and will allow you to put them in the Range slot (mostly stuff from the original game, when the options were fewer, the game engine was simpler, and the programming had a lot of "lazy" shortcuts....
Kinda funny to stick a Splintering Club in Range and then "Play Fetch" with the next Orc you're after "Whish!..... BONK!" PO'd Orc on its way :)
(Over 3 years, ya get bored and do silly stuff sometimes, lol)
It's a no drop item. But you will throw it out when you press range weapon without any warning (although no-drop warning is ON). Yes, I tried... Luckily, I petitioned and got it back at last. =)
One of the benefits NOT listed aboev is that Dawnchaser is that it can be used as a light source. It's amazing, I go into Seblis with this is my range slot and i see fine. I change over to anything else and it gets MUCH darker.
When Bards are Kiting something this spear allows them to attack while they kite. Run around and play dot songs. But with This they can also attack the enemy. This is a great item for a bard.

Actually yes you do throw something if it's in your ranged slot (excluding bows) i tried it out...i had a drgoon dirk in my range slot and throwing daggers in my ammo. i tried to throw a throwing dagger and lost my dragoon dirk :(

That means this item CAN NOT BE THROWN. Hence sence it can be equiped in the range slot that does NOT mean it is going to be thrown. It just means you can equip and use it from there. NO DROP items CAN NOT be thrown.
