The only reason I could possibly see spending a bunch of platinum on this overpriced vendor plate would be if it was in some unique color. With dyes available for many colors of fine plate, even then this really isn't a useful item. By the time a player has enough money to afford any piece of vendor plate, he has learned enough about the game to know that he doesn't need to spend so much for this level of AC.

I don't know what crack you all are on, but this crap is 2k. Did they change it, or did you all explode into whines when you looked at false price on this page? If it's because of your whining that they changed it, bite me. No one ever sells FP on my server and when they do its more expensive than my class gear which is hella better. This stuff seemed pretty easy to get, for a reasonable price (till I got there and it was 2k for bp 1kish for rest). Oh well.

the 180pp price is false. I went to Katta Castle and the vendor wanted like 2k for the BP.

Why even put plate armor on vendors because no one is going to pay 2k for a BP you can buy from a player for like 100-200pp.

This only kills the market for MEDIUM FS plate. Note that dwarfs, halflings, gnomes, ogres and trolls cannot wear.

I wouldn't call the complaints whining. To get to the point where one can make fine plate takes many hours, and thousands of platinum as an investment. It shouldn't be too much to expect that after all that expense and effort, a tradesman should be able to turn a reasonable profit.

A 180 plat price on this item is ridiculous, especially when you consider that vendor-sold plate armor with no bonuses sells for something on the order of 800 platinum in the "old world". This breastplate should cost something like 1000 platinum, at least, considering it's a vendor item.

The problem is, Verant did a lousy job on game economics. So, they make trades a money sink. If you want to become a so-called "grandmaster" in a useful skill, they suck the money from you, and make it impossible for you to recoup the investment.

The fact of the matter is, if you take raw materials, and use your skill to make a better product, selling that product should net you more money from a vendor than selling the raw materials. Maybe not a lot more, but it should still be more. Either that, or the vendor's equivalent products should be costly enough that the tradesman can have a market for his wares.

In theory, EQ is a rich game that allows a player to advance their abilities in a number of ways: combat, quests, trades, knowledge. In fact, the only way to progress in the game is via camping, killing, and looting.

You don't have to acquire any knowledge in-game, you can learn everything online, and the fact that your character never learned the information doesn't matter. You can learn 20-odd languages, but it doesn't do you any good, as they aren't used 99 percent of the time. You can become a grandmaster at a trade, but you'll never make any money at it.

Does this mean I hate the game? NO! I've been playing for over a year and a half! I've got a half-dozen characters that I rotate through, and I'm hard-pressed to tell you which is my favorite. But that's no reason to stick my head in the sand and not say when there's things that could use fixing.

Players should be rewarded for significant efforts in ANY phase of the game. To do otherwise trivializes their efforts. If that happens, don't be surprised if they complain.

Making Fine Plate is a pain in the ***... and THIS is a slap in the face of any grandmaster smithy ... was that necessary?? why?? that really sucks...

Oh, wah... get over it. You'll still have your market for FS armor for those that aren't willing to travel to get this stuff.

Short-sighted people... they never cease to amaze me...
vs fine steel
# Dec 08 2001 at 6:16 PM Rating: Default
Well... I think Verant was realizing that the crafting of fine steel bombed somewhat... people still haven't figured out how to make velious smith stuff, and when you think about it a set of this stuff for less than 1k ain't bad for a new character. Yes there's other stuff out there for comparible price that has stats too... but not always easy to find.

You have a great point. However, FS plate wasn't really put in because there was a lack of good armor. It was put in to allow smiths to advance their skills.
While this is pretty nice armor for the price, I'd recommend making this no-drop. Getting to Katta isn't all that easy for newbies, and it really does hurt the FS plate market.

Kind of disgusting when a steel plate breastplate sold in all old norrath cities still sell for 600+ plat.

FS plate WAS put in to fill a gap in the armors. At the time it came out some of the pieces were really compettitive (mask, neck, cloak). After all it was put in several months before SoV was released.

The trend that people use FS only to skill up, has come about after quest requireing high smithing were introduces, and after the gem requirement for enchanting was removed.

There is no Velious smithed armor, at least that is the information given by the head tradeskil programmer at VI.

This does kill FS, at least unless FS gets reevaluated.
Image is everything

Not everybody wants cheapest.. some of us spend thousands upon thousands for a certain look.. and depending on what this looks like when worn.. maybe the customizable colors of fine steel are more appealing to others..
Fine Steel?
# Dec 08 2001 at 3:17 AM Rating: Decent
Just wondering, why would someone buy crafted Fine Steel armor when they can get this cheaper?

Because not everyone plays this game and buys their gear based on stats alone. There are some people out there that would rather look cool than have an extra +2 SV whatever. Fine Plate is customizable, graphi wise, and this is a big selling point.
