Well, doesn't seem I'll be getting my updated walkthrough added here. Guess it wasn't that good. :) Anyhow, for those who want to work on it for a taste of the old world:

Screen shots, faction hits, dialogs, etc, all here. Hope it helps.

Burning Rapier
# Jun 20 2004 at 4:49 PM Rating: Decent
I completed this quest today and I am very proud to say that I didn't buy anything from any players. I did this quest the way it was meant to be done. I enlisted the help of higher level players and as a group we went after the harder drop items. They were actually happy to lend a hand in doing a "old school" quest.

This brings a smile to my face now when I stand at a Wayfarer camp with my rapier on fire. I get so many inspects and requests for a link. I even get the occasional Kudos when I tell people I quested it.

Dream on man, I did this quest just because I thought it had a nice burning particle effect as the name might imply but NO!!

Lousy graphics and near worthless stats.

There is absolutely NO status with having this item.

If it DID have the particle effects then when equiped at least you might get some sense of pride when peeps ask what that is but as it is, it is just another of those Old World waste of time quest's.

IMHO.

Finished quest today, took 4 hours. The blackburrow zone destruction took another 4 hours.

This rapier never did have a burning graphic and it doesn't now. It does proc Ignite, so that's as close as you can get.

Just an update. I just completed the quest and there has not been a particle effect added to it. My guess is they haven't really completed the quest and are making it up.

I can also say that there is NO particle effect to this weapon. I completed this quest last night with my rogue. It was just a fun thing for me to do as my rogue has much better weapons, and I figured one day I may do the GM quest with it eventually.

It's just a very plain appearing weapon. Nothing special about its appearance.

Level 25
# Mar 19 2004 at 12:02 PM Rating: Decent
This quest can actually be done below level 30 if you want to bother to take the time. Most of the drinks are buyable, so that's a piece of cake. Had a shaman friend help me in OOT to get the bottle (he casted levitate and enduring breath) so that was easy, too. Went into MM at level 25 to get the Blood Spirits and a charitable high level monk let me come in and loot it off the hemo. The skins aren't too hard to come by these days with the bazaar up and running. After that, you're just spending money. This is more a status item than a real valuable weapon these days just because of the low damage. Still, because of level specifics, this one should be in your off-hand in your 30s just because of the added perk of having that proc. I was pretty dang proud when I finished this one up.

In addition to being a status item, it's used in the Rogue Vein Rot (And master Sketch) quest. So, for the rare few rogues who practise poisoning, this is a worthwhile quest.

Blackburrow Gnoll Skins
# Dec 11 2002 at 2:16 PM Rating: Default
I decided to start this quest the other day while I was in Sol A with a guildie. After we got done, I decided that the Blackburrow Skin drops (being described as the longest and most tedious part) would be a good place to start. It took three nights, approximately 3-4 hours per night to collect all the components. The cask I traded to a shaman for a Large Tailored Bag full of Studded Collars and Cracked Staves. The first skin I bought for 25pp at the Bazaar. The rest I was given by two duos (both P-Levelers and their charge) who were XP grinding in the GR and Commander area. One skin dropped from an Elite in the Green Room, the other two (perhaps not so surprisingly) dropped from Lord Elgnub. He spawned twice in about an hour's window, and he had the skin both time.

From there - on my way out - I popped the two Pups near the entrance, scored one scalp. Dinged a second one in Q-Hills, and got a match. Clicked the pop-up book to the PoK, checked the barb brewing vendor inside the tradeskill plaza, ch-ching - two Ol' Tujims. Presto!

This is not a quest for the casual gamer. I am lucky if I can play 10 hrs a week. The worst part was Blackburrow. I must have spent 40 hours doing this quest - 30 of it farming BB Skins and the Cask. I am a level 47 rogue so I did it for the pure experience of doing it - not because I needed it (I heard that one of the advanced poisoning quests requires turning in your BR but that's 10 levels away for me, at least).

Getting groups of friends for Solsek A and Mistmoore was no big deal since so many epic pieces drop in those zones for several classes.

This quest is for the patient player. If you want to PL don't waste your time.

I did this quest some time ago with my rogue around level 35 or so. I did it in tandem with another rogue in my guild at the time (I think she was level 34 then). The quest can be a serious pain to complete if you don't have any backup to getting the various peices (most notably, the Mistmoore portions), but with a supportive guild it's an easily attainable item at any point after gaining level 30.

My point though, is that I still carry this little gem around with me, even at level 47. Honestly, I keep it in my off hand most of the time and I will sometimes equip it in my primary hand if I'm in a group where the MA (Main Assist) is lower level than I (it's a lower damage ratio with smaller Back Stabs so that I don't over-taunt the taunter).

So, even though there are far better weapons than this one, unless you have the money to buy something better, or have another character to twink your rogue, this is one of the better items available to us in the 30's.

Please keep in mind that not everyone in the game has a 60th level character to go farm the "ubber" items for them. This quest is still viable.

# Oct 03 2003 at 12:22 PM Rating: Default
to avoid over-taunting in groups, simply turn off auto attack, hide, then switch auto attack back on.

This technique is called evasion, and I am suprised about how many relatively high rogues do not know about it. (my rogue alt only being lvl 28!)

just thought this might help any rogues breezing though

Ok, this is what I have found out by being a rogue. We LIVE for Backstab right? Ok, that said, why the hell would you want a low damage wpn in either hand? The higher the damage of a piercer the more BS damage. Also, the delay of an offhand weapon is negated. Its better to get a very high damage weapon in BOTH hands if you really want to do some damage as a Rogue.../petition Why do almost all the quests in this game SUCK for your level? Grrrr.. 8P
RE: Are you all Warriors?
# Apr 28 2002 at 9:26 PM Rating: Decent
hey bud you might be right... but youre a lil whiney bi*ch... This quest was made "Back In The Day" Every rogue (before kunark) did this quest.. now its second-rate and you can buy better... (back in the day when selling dragon loot would get you shunned) If youre starting out and dont have a connection this is a great quest to get you a decent weapon... What did you expect? somthing comparable to epic or mrylokars dagger of blood? Get over it if you think like this this the game will never meet your expectations.
RE: Are you all Warriors?
# Feb 04 2003 at 4:57 AM Rating: Default
I agree with Blankz. Too many people expect you to be able to equip with Godlike weaponry by the time you're level 6. The sole reason for playing any class should be the challenge, and completing every class specific quest including your epic should be your long term goal imho. Until you've quite literally "been there, done that, got the T-shirt" how can you possibly say that you've really played a class.

Personally , I'd like to see all magic items made level specific and no-drop. That would see the end of all twinks, make people really work for their items, encourage even more grouped / raid questing and perhaps most importantly....make smithing a truly GREAT skill to learn again.

I still remember those days when I used to look at banded and plate armor and start drooling.

Down with Bazaar !!!!

To be honest if you kill some spiderlings and sell the silks for 1pp each you can buy a gimling mining pick for about 20pp (1 stack of silks). Its 12/29, which is better than this when you take into consideration the BS.
RE: Are you all Warriors?
# Feb 18 2003 at 3:15 PM Rating: Default
If you mean the Sturdy Grimling Mining Pick, it's not a magic weapon, so the mobs you can use it against are pretty limited. Heck, you can't even hit the Grimlings with it. Or at least not the ones I tried. I picked one of these up off a dead Grimling and then used it in my primary slot for the next fight. The target grimling was immune. Dropped it and ignored them from then on, except as sellable loot.

I've already got a crystalline spider fang, a very nice primary weapon for my level 37 rogue. But I'm still considering starting the Burning Rapier quest the next time I get a few days when my other friends won't be online. It's a long way from being the best weapon, sure... but there is just something cool about being able to say "I did this". If nothing else, having the rapier is one more small piece of evidence that I'm an experienced player.

Well, I got the bottle (and got better at using locs!), got my bard to buy all the buyable drinks, managed to get the bloodspirits incredibly easily. Went into Mistymoore, loitered a bit, had another rogue tell me I'm too young for the quest which ticked me off more than waiting around for someone to kill the hemo. Wandered up to the garden, shot nasty looks at the hemo enologist, a nice barb boy came and killed the hemo, looted her, forgot hide went off, died, reved, left. All in all, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm OMW to the Temple to wander around looking for the CQ CX. Three questions: I just saw a pic of the inventory discription of this saying the delay was 23... it's 20, right? What's this bad mammajamma look like? and will hide come off when i try to pickpocket the oil stout?

Well all...

I'm brand new to the game (been playing for four days) and happened to be in Blackburrow at level seven with a few other low level newbies. My character was not twinked or buffed, just trying to gain experience at the spawn point... a Master Brewer came along and my partner (level seven) and I killed him and I looted a Blackburrow Cask. Not knowing what it was, I checked on a few prices with merchants and nearly sold it for a few gold, but thought twice and jumped online to find out what it was before I sold it, hehe, thank goodness... as a rogue myself, methinks I will find this handy later. And to think if I had sold it, not only would it have been a pain in the **** to find later, but I would have lost out on about 100 pp. Life is funny...

Almost done

Well - Im on the final leg of this quest. The hardest part - Blood Spirits - Mistmore is a deadly place. Each time through Faydwer I stop by to see if there are any raids going on. Last night it was busy - I OOC'd Bedi McMarrin Corpse dragging service and helped some folks out dragging their corpses after their party got wiped out. The Karma gods took favor with me and a high level party killed the Hemo Entologist - actually cleared the courtyard - everything was Red there to a level 30 Rogue - gotta love Sneak/Hide - Got my Gem of Stamina - Picked the lock and got the Gem Case - Off to Sol A for Nora Sparkle - Kill Lava Basaliks and Fire Drakes in Lavastorm for Poison Making drops while I'm there.

I think I will now be set as far as gear until Planar armor or I can afford Haze Panther - semi-set of Ravenscale except Bracers (Scavaging and Hero Bracers are better) and gloves - Iskar Scale now fit Barb Rogues. I can focus on leveling in earnest.

# Nov 25 2001 at 1:56 AM Rating: Default
For all you cheapskates out there...yes you have to buy the sapphire...Noresa Sparkle is impossible to pick pocket. Have a skill of 141 pick pocket and gave it a try for about an hour, I didn't get a dime outta that stingy broad. She is green at level 30 so i considered killing her, but i don't know if she would drop the sapphire or if i'd be taking a meaningless faction hit. Any one want to try killing for me?
As far as being better than the serrated bone dirk, i think it will be...i've had the SBD proc about 6 times in one battle, and mobs tend to resist...with a better delay and the agi and dex buffs on it, should be a good secondary weapon. Currently have 145agi 150dex...think i can get 10 procs in one battle??

just finished the quest and i must say it is quite a doozy, completed it at lvl 35.

the first thing i di after studying the quest was start with the skins and the cask, i took my necro there and killed the green room elites and the elites around the corner from them for about 3 hours 2 skins /sigh went back there later in the week when my druid was in the area (farming another fishbone earring for the guild) droped into bb auctioned buying bb cask 100pp 2 tells :) auctioned buying skins bought 1 for 50pp and on my way down i found a single elite gnoll in my way to the green room, 1 nuke and i had another skin :) at this point i almost wet myself then relized i know had to make some tjs brew, 20 points into brewing some quick practice to lvl 50 brewing, and then started trying tjs brew, 4 tries later success

ok with that done i started porting all around grabbing all the drinks from around the world, got the oblong bottle no problem, dmf grab and port out of there.

ok now the part i didnt relize was so hard... the blood, what a pain in the neck.... got a 53 necro (kunin, my boy with ALL the hookups) 52 druid and a couple friends from kabald.

the oil and the sparkle purse, easy all that took was 100pp woke up at 3 am /w all warrior 60, was one in lavastorm 100pp later we marched in got the oil and the purse and marched out, and which point he gave me my 100pp back, what a guy.

after that went to the temple got the note
went to dagnors got the axe
went to highpass got the box
inserted drinks and combined at the same trip ( i hate going to highpass) got that gem
went to wc turned in sparkle purse, bought gem, turned in gem to toxdill
went to get gem case
went to bubar in ec tunnel
went to the orc in sro.

i had to do alot of reading on this quest to extract those simple steps, makes life easier
i recomend you do them in this order or maybe put the oil and the sparkle purse first.
good luck fellow rogues

Well just finished the quest. everyones posts helped alot. The Hemo enologist is a pain in the neck he has friends and they like to beat you down for sport. I had a 58 rogue and a 54 Druid help me. they made it look easy lol. Well the blackburrow part i was there 18 hours went form kos in queynos to amialby. The hard to get skins i walked out with 26 of them. The cask i had buy from a lowbie passing through (thank goodness). The cask is a rare drop i wacked the brewer 9 times never dropped it. The skins are rare but you have time to spare waiting on brewer so you plow evrything that moves and help the newbies and every one they loot they will give to you out of thanks. Remember pelts are not skins FYI you need the skins. At level 45 the zone is a joke people pulled trains to me instead of the zone it was a short run and heck something to do. Sol A might get nasty but i went down with 41 sk 45 shaman 46 enchanter 51 wizard and me 45 rogue. We had a blast plowed everything in are path never stopping to med even. but at a lower level you might need help. (and the mechanical gnmes are a blast to abuse) We wacked the model Cx figured why waste time pick pocketing more fun to kill him, had it on him so we were set. And yes teh gobbos can see through hide invis and camo FYI, so be ready for a fight at all times. I love the weapon, I run a high dex and that sucker in a good fight will proc 2-5 times that get the attention of the mob fast so be ready to evade lol. Well attacked level 49 mobs and they havn't resisted a proc yet so it can be a long used weapon. Well my experience with cask sucked but may have been a fluke with it never dropping. Thanks all for your helpful posts : ). Also if your on quellious i have a few full sets of the non nodrop beers and a few skins left. So if ya catch me i might be able to load ya up and save you some leg work. WOOT got yo love procs.......................
Skins

38 posts
I helped a rogue guildmate this past weekend get 4 skins. We did it in about 2 hours, maybe 3. One skin was given to me by a lizard monk who wasnt ready to start his sash quests because of factioin issues. The other 3 were dropped off of Elite's, the Gnoll High Shaman, and the Commander.

The best place to look for these are in the "green room". It has 5 spawns in it and all are either shaman, elites, High Shaman, an occasional commander, and named gnolls. These are the only things that I have seen that drop skins. The room is on a 6 minute respawn if I remember correctly. Once you clear that room, go out and run to the left to the little ramp up to the left and you will see anothe room that has 4 spawns in it. One is a guardsman, and the other 3 are an Elite, a commander and either an elite, commander, or splitpaw. Between the 2 rooms you should be able to collect the skins in a matter of a few hours.

As to the location I have seen on the brewer, I am a Ranger and have a druid. Both are wearing a cloak of the Jaggedpine, which took me 3 casks each to acquire. Flame me if you want, but I wear it with pride. The brewer and master brewer both spawn at the same spot just as you come down the ramp past the main bridge. You have to turn left at the big rock and sit there until the guardsman or the brewer spawns. They are on 18 minutes almost to the second. It took me a long time to get those casks. I even almost gave up on the first cloak and traded 2 casks to another fellow who already had 1, when I was running through the zone and saw the bear up top. I went to the spot and there he was with the cask. So I started all over again.

A note about the bear, if he is up top then it is a good bet that the next spawn will be a brewer. Just a bit of FYI.

Good luck, and good hunting.

Myth's bout the cask !
# Aug 05 2001 at 9:44 AM Rating: Default
Okay I've been camping the cask and BB skins for the past week (on and off). A lvl 56 rogue friend of mine was telling me that the cask isn't the rare drop...its the skins that are a pain. Well i found out from experience that this is true. The brewer isn't a trigged spawn..he has a place holder. I just sat under the elite ledge and wait for the spawn. The brewer or his PH(a gnoll guardsman i think) will spawn close to the barrels. Seems to be on a timed spawn of about an hour.(unless he spawns twice in an hour and i've been missing him) I killed 2 brewers and one master brewer(which dropped the cask). So the whole week i've been campin him i've had 3 skin drops and was only able to purchase one skin. I didn't however figure out the his spawn until later in the week. So understand...the cask isn't the problem...the skins are.

Hops,Barely, yeast, malt, cask and is trival at 135.

I put one point into brewing and came up with two batches(you get 2 per sucessful try) after 25 trys. Got my first batch after only 10 trys.

hope this helps!
Getting the cask
# Jun 30 2001 at 4:26 AM Rating: Default
I started camping about 1am, stayed there til 5am, 1 brewer, no cask... Killed time by helping newbies and tryin to get bb skins, when the elites werent camped...THIS is the most difficult part of the quest. Fighting mobs is nothing compared to the repeated disappointment of a guard spawning instead of a brewer. It is worth it, though. The proc, combined with the extremely low delay makes this weapon equivalent to a trakasaur tooth. (except for bs, of course) The battle for the items dropped from the difficult mobs will be quite pleasant, once i've actually gotten the cask.
RE: Getting the cask
# Jul 01 2001 at 5:59 AM Rating: Default
Ok, this is a followup to my first post. I logged on at about 12am. Not long after I got there, my friend, an Iksar Shaman I met the prev night who was doin AE spells for faction, informed me that he thinks the brewers are a triggered spawn, because he'd seen many more of them when more people were in bb. He then informs me that he killed a few brewers and looted 1 cask. After a little negotiating, I trade him a Shralok Pack and 20pp for the cask. I then head to the bank in Qeynos, because I am seriously encumbered. Just before I leave the zone he gives me a tell. "Master Brewer is up". I tell him to keep it there for me. He says too late someone is gettin it now. I got there and a couple of peeps were killin it. The guy looted a cask. Tells me that he needs it cuz he's unable to brew in towns, cuz he's an Iksar too. I couldnt have bought it anyway, I was nearly broke then. Regardless, though, THAT SUCKS! I gave up a great backpack and 20pp, but all I had to do to get a cask was camp there for about 15-20 minutes after I came on. Went back to bb after banking. Killed elites, got murdered in a duel, killed more elites, finally bought 2 skins for 15pp each at about 4am. So, as far as the quest time goes, it's gonna be about 12 hours max it would seem, since I only have to get the looted items now. My guild has willing participants, so that's no prob. Also, I haven't read all the previous posts yet on this, but could someone point me to a post that mentions the Brewer being a triggered spawn, or provide everyone with some new info on this, because I got about 12 guards in a row with no brewer last night, and they pop like crazy during the day. Anyhoo, just sharing my experience gettin this kikkass weapon. I'll prolly follow up again after I get the BR tommorrow night/morning.

i'm startin' it now at 18, and i figure i'll probably complete it in my late twenties. i'm plannin' to gather the various bits and pieces as i wander the world and bankin' them. many of these items are easily obtainable before level 30, so why wait? even at 11, you should be able to pick up the "bought" items.

Those lvl 20 people aren't doing the quest, they're having they're friends do it for them. At lvl 30 I've had to buy my way through a couple parts (paying higher lvl peops to take out a couple mobs). That's the truth.
